"I think he's waking up."
"About time he did."
Danny could hear murmurs from his team members, mainly Tani and Lou whom he would consider the louder members of the team. He opened his eyes and was immediately greeted with the faces of his team members.
"Finally decided to join us, sleeping beauty?" Lou exclaimed.
Tani and Junior chuckled behind him. Steve was there too but he barely gave a reaction aside from a forced smile. Danny scanned his surroundings, perplexed to find himself in his own hospital bed.
"What happened? I was with Grace. How did I get here?" The last thing Danny remembered was sleeping next to his daughter, waiting for her to awaken.
"Yeah you were. And you gave her the hell of a scare. She tried to wake you up but you were passed out next to her," Lou chastised. "I'd be surprised if you didn't pass out from all your little excursions. Thankfully it's nothing serious. But you've been asleep for the past, let me see, 19 hours."
"What?" It definitely didn't feel like he had been asleep that long. In fact he still felt extremely tired and all he wanted to do was to go back to sleep.
"Yeah, what?" Lou replied. "Your daughter has been asking for you, wanting to come see you but we managed to convince her you're okay. The two of you are so similar it scares me sometimes." Lou shivered dramatically, earning laughs from the others. "And before you ask, no, you can't leave this room to go see her yet. The doctor has warned us all to keep you in bed."
"Wait, if all of you are here, Grace is all alone?" Danny panicked.
"Oh god, Danny. Can you stop worrying for a second?" Tani voiced out in frustration. "Of course we wouldn't leave her alone."
"Yeah, we asked for her to be transferred to a shared room with Rachel," Junior continued.
"I.. I'm sorry. It's just after what happened.." Danny paused. "I guess I can't be too careful."
Tani bit her lip, "Sorry, Danny." She hadn't stopped to think that all the events that happened were putting Danny on high alert. "But you know you can rely on us. We'll always have your back."
Danny smiled, "Yeah I know that. Thank you, guys. For having my back and for looking out for Rachel and Grace."
"Come on, man. Of course we would." Lou chimed in.
Danny eyed Steve who was all too silent during the exchange.
"So Danny, are you done playing McGarrett or is there more we should be prepared for." Tani asked, half serious. "Cos you know a little heads up would be nice."
"No.. I'm done. I feel like I'm 90. How do you do this all the time?" Danny directed his question to Steve in an attempt to include him in the conversation.
"Endurance training. You'll get there." Steve smirked.
"Don't encourage him. Please. One McGarrett is more than enough. I don't think I can handle all that stress," Lou interjected.
"Don't worry, I'm not at all interested in being another him," Danny reassured, pointing at Steve.
"Thank god!" Tani sighed.
...
"Look who's here!" Tani called out as she pushed Grace's wheelchair into Danny's room.
"Grace!" Danny's face instantly lighted up when he spotted his daughter and he immediately sat up on his bed. "Hey are you sure she's okay to be out of bed like this?"
Tani rolled her eyes, "Look who's talking... Of course she is. She's a model patient, unlike someone I know. We asked her doctor."
Danny ignored Tani and directed his attention to Grace. "Danno, how're you feeling?" Grace's brows were furrowed.
"Hey, I'm okay. I'm sorry I worried you," Danny smiled at her.
"I'm gonna leave you two for a bit. Grace, I'll come back in a while to take you back to your room okay?" Tani interrupted.
"Thanks, Tani." Grace smiled.
"Grace? Are you okay?" Danny asked softly.
She nodded, "Yes, Danno. You can stop worrying about me."
"You know that's never going to happen," Danny paused, his face hardening. Grace knew immediately what was coming. "Grace, I.."
"Please, Dad. Don't. I know what you're going to say. Don't say it." Grace cut him off.
Danny smiled at his daughter and raised his eyebrows, "What am I going to say?"
"That you're sorry, that this shouldn't have happened, that it's your fault blah blah..." Grace started but then her face turned serious as she reached out to hold Danny's hand. "Danno, I was scared. The entire time they had me, I was scared. Very scared. I thought he killed mom and I thought I was going to be next, that they'd kill me too."
"Grace, I put you through that. I'm sorry," Danny was heartbroken, seeing his daughter's display of emotions.
"No, Dad, you didn't put me through this. That man did. And you know something, dad? You got me through it. You were the reason I held on. I never had a doubt in my mind, not for one second, that you were going to come. That you were coming to save me, like you always do. You've always kept me safe and protected me. I knew.. I just knew you were going to do it again. And you did, like always."
"I'm not Superman, Grace. I can't do it all the time. And I thought I was too late this time. I can't lose you Grace."
Grace placed her hand on Danny's cheek, "Well, you're my Superman and you're never too late for me.."
Danny blinked back the tears in his eyes and with a shaky voice said, "You still have one of those special hugs? I could really use one right now."
Grace gave Danny a tearful smile and got up to envelope him in a hug. "I love you, Danno. A lot. And I'm glad you're okay."
"I'm glad you're okay too," Danny sighed. "I love you so much, monkey."
...
"So?" Danny asked when everyone had left and only Steve was left in his hospital room. Steve was still too quite and Danny wasn't liking it.
"What?"
"What's wrong?" Danny asked.
"Nothing." Steve wasn't lying. Nothing was wrong. Everything had resolved nicely. Emilio had failed terribly at his plans, thankfully, and everyone was fine. Rachel, Grace and Danny were all recovering and Emilio behind bars. Nothing was wrong. The night that had gone terribly wrong had somehow resolved nicely.
"You can fool everyone, Steve, but not me. Spit it out." Danny forced.
Steve shook his head and took a deep breath. "Were you really going to do it?"
"Do what?" Danny was confused. "What are you talking about?" Danny asked again when Steve didn't answer.
"The car. Were you really going to drive it off the cliff?"
Danny froze. "How.."
"That scumbag, he told me everything." Steve shook his head. "So were you?"
"I wasn't thinking." Danny confessed. "I couldn't think."
"Danny.." Steve's fear was confirmed. Irrationally, he had hoped that Danny wasn't really going to do it. That he had done it just to get Emilio to talk. But deep down he knew Danny too well.
"I guess in that moment I believed him and I thought Grace was really gone. And I couldn't think of anything else. I didn't want to see her body, I didn't want to know what he did to her." Danny paused. "I'm sorry.. I just didn't know how to continue living if I lost her."
"Danny, you know you still have Charlie to think about."
"I told you I wasn't thinking. I know it was stupid. I shouldn't have let him get to me that way. It's just.. you know how important Grace is in my life. I was so damn afraid that I couldn't save her. That I lost her, because of my own actions."
"Well you didn't. You saved her, buddy."
"I almost couldn't."
"But you did.. Everything is okay now and Reyes is not getting out of this." Steve waited for a response from Danny but when he didn't give one, Steve continued, "Please. Don't ever do that again."
"Okay."
An uncomfortable silence hung in the air for several minutes.
"So I get a free pass?" Steve asked, his face was serious.
"What?" Danny looked confused.
"I mean after all the mess you created that I had to clean up... I would say you out McGarrett-ed me. I mean you assaulted three HPD officers and caused an accident while trying to escape custody? Seriously? Do you even know how much explaining I had to do while you were having your beauty sleep? I say I get a free pass for a month. No complaints. No rants." Steve griped.
"Okay."
"Okay?" Steve was surprised that Danny had agreed so willingly. "Wow, you folded quickly."
"Yeah okay. I appreciate you and what you've done for me. So, okay. Anyway, after all that excitement I'm thinking I'll take a break for a month, you can do whatever you like while I'm on leave." Danny replied.
"Come on that's cheating."
"Yeah, maybe it is but I don't care. Take it or leave it," Danny yawned.
"Okay, you could just say it if you were bored of me already." Steve smiled as he got up from his chair. "Go to sleep. I'll be back tomorrow. Try not to cause any trouble in the meantime."
"You're saying that to me?" Danny quipped.
Steve nodded, smiling at his friend, "I love you buddy."
"Love you, too, you big goof."
