This fanfiction is not yet finished. Also, this is one of my first fanfictions, so please go easy on me. Though if you'd like to say if something needs more work, please do. This takes place somewhere when Yato and Yukine are staying with Kofuku and Daikoku, after Yukine started acting a little better.
Yukine and Hiyori walked down the sidewalk, the streets as busy and bustling as ever. The sun was high in the clear blue sky, but there was still a cold chill to the breeze. Hiyori had earlier suggested they go for a walk, what with Yukine being cramped inside, focused on his schoolwork. Yato was wherever he was, and the two couldn't figure out whether or not he was following them.
"So, you were having trouble with the geometry?" Hiyori asked, turning her head to look at Yukine. "Yeah, it really sucks." He muttered with a frustrated sigh. "I had trouble with it too, at first. But don't get frustrated. Just take a deep breath, and look at it a bit closer. If you need help, I'm always here." Hiyori said, smiling. Yukine paused for a second before he nodded. "Yeah, okay."
"Stop! Thief!" A voice rang out loudly from in front of Hiyori and Yukine. They both turned to look, and saw a woman a few buildings away. She was yelling at a girl who was racing away from her, who had a large patterned purse in her grip.
"She's heading straight for us." Yukine remarked, eyes wide. "Well, then, we have to stop her!" Hiyori replied simply, readying herself. The girl seemed to notice Hiyori's intentions at the last second, and quickly dodged her, almost barreling straight into Yukine, who yelped in surprise. "Grab her!" Hiyori yelled.
Yukine reached out to grab the girl, when she neatly dodged him, and ran past. Yukine turned and watched the girl run for a moment, before he felt Hiyori grab his wrist. "Come on! We can't let her get away!" Hiyori ran forward, and Yukine stumbled behind as she pulled him with her. "Hey!" He shouted, tugging his arm from her grip, and sped beside her.
The girl had a far lead, but Hiyori showed no intentions of giving up. Yukine, having no choice, continued alongside Hiyori.
The girl ahead turned suddenly into an alleyway. Hiyori skidded to a stop at the opening, and Yukine barely saved himself from crashing into her. "Why did you stop?" Yukine demanded. "Sh!" Hiyori hushed him, and continued to stare into the alleyway. Frowning, Yukine did the same.
The girl had slowed to a walk, and was nearing a dumpster. The alley itself was a dark, mess of shadows and trash cans. The girl walked to the side of the dumpster, and was looking at something there, before she sat down. Yukine and Hiyori could see her better now. The girl seemed to have very pale blond hair, and was wearing a stained grey hoodie. She looked to be around their age.
"I couldn't find any food, but I got some money." The girl said, her voice quiet. Yukine frowned, but stayed silent as another voice replied. "It's okay, Kasi." Yukine's eyes widened. The voice sounded like it belonged to a little boy.
Suddenly, a dark haired little boy stood up from behind the dumpster and ran over to the girl, flinging himself into her arms. The girl sighed as she embraced him. "You were gone for a long time. I thought you were in trouble." The little boy said. "I know, I'm sorry Ren." The girl said as she pulled away from him, hands still on his shoulders. "But it's getting colder. You know what that means. We've gotta find a place to stay, so we don't have to go to Uncle Hayato." The little boy, Ren, nodded sadly.
"Hiyori." Yukine said softly. "You don't think they're homeless, do you?" Hiyori looked at Yukine, a sad look on her face, before she looked back at the two in the alley. The girl had stood up, and was going through the woman's purse.
"Hey!" Hiyori called out. The girl's head snapped up to look at them. Ren quickly ran behind her, gripping her legs. Hiyori walked forward, Yukine close on her heels. "If you're hungry, we can offer you guys dinner." Hiyori offered.
The girl blinked, frowning. "For what price?" Hiyori stopped in front of the girl. "There is no price. We're just inviting you for dinner." The girl narrowed her eyes at Hiyori, who continued. "But you'll have to give that woman her purse back." The girl opened her mouth to argue, when Ren tugged at her shirt. "Kasi? Did you… did you steal that money?" He looked up at her with big brown eyes, a confused frown on his face. The girl paused, looking down at Ren, her gaze softening. Sighing, she looked back to Hiyori and Yukine.
"Fine. Here." The girl muttered, tossing the purse at Hiyori. Hiyori quickly caught it, nodding. "Thank you. As soon as we return the purse, we'll get you guys dinner." The girl didn't say anything, looking at the ground with a sour expression. Ren, however, was beyond pleased. "Thank you!"
As the four made their way out of the alley, Yukine was watching the girl with a frown, remembering his own attempts at stealing. The girl had a hold of Ren's hand, and walked with her head down, but was watching every move Hiyori made with a suspicious eye. Hiyori noticed the girl's tense posture. "Hey, I didn't catch your name." Hiyori said. The girl narrowed her eyes. "Oh, but didn't this young man here call you Kasi?" Hiyori added thoughtfully. The girl snapped her head up, glaring at Hiyori. "My name's Kasumi. Don't get it wrong."
Ren smiled at Hiyori. "Don't mind Kasi. My name is Ren! What's yours?" Hiyori smiled back. "My name is Hiyori, and this is Yukine." Kasumi looked to where Yukine was standing, an odd expression on her face. "So, what, you're just this girl's shadow or something? Just let her do the talking?" Yukine frowned, taken back. "It's not like that." He muttered.
Hiyori frowned, asking, "You can see him?" Kasumi raised an eyebrow. "Don't look so surprised." Ren looked up at Yukine, smiling. "Nice to meet you." Yukine's eyes widened. "So can you see phantoms too?" Hiyori asked, just as mystified. "Phantoms?" Kasumi asked, brushing her hair from her eyes. "What are you talking about?"
"They're kind of like... monsters?" Hiyori suggested.
"There are really big scary monsters!" Ren said, swiping the air as if he had claws. "And they try to eat people, like this!" Ren picked up a twig from the ground, and pretended to roar loudly before he began chewing on the stick. "Get that out of your mouth!" Kasumi exclaimed, snatching the twig from him. Hiyori and Yukine exchanged a glance. Hiyori bent down so she was eye level to Ren. "What do the monsters look like?" Kasumi opened her mouth to say something, but Ren quickly said, "They're big, and sometimes small, and they look like froggies sometimes, and they try to eat me, but then Kasi has to pow pow them, and-" Kasumi grabbed Ren's arm. "And it was all just a funny story I made up to entertain little Ren here." She interrupted. Hiyori looked at Kasumi, who's hard, dark grey eyes dared her to say otherwise.
Hiyori was silent for a moment before she stood up. "Okay, well, let's get this purse to its owner." She said as she turned around and began walking again. The other three followed her. Yukine, who kept giving Kasumi strange side glances, was deep in thought. Kasumi ignored him, taking hold of Ren's hand again.
Who are these kids?
