Chapter 1: Nerves before the wedding
Wes's heart was beating very fast when he heard the music change, and his eyes, along with those of the others, flew to the end of the path that led to the makeshift altar. Two figures appeared there, walking slowly arm in arm.
The expression on the face of the woman walking next to the man escorting her was all that mattered to Wes, and she looked at him with the most radiant smile she had ever seen. In fact, even though he had thought it was impossible, considering all the reasons why they shouldn't be together, but that didn't matter today, what mattered was that the two of them were going to stay together for the rest of their lives.
That thought made her heart beat faster, and she fought the urge to pinch herself.
"This really is happening." he thought, "I'm here, she's here, we're both here, and we're getting married!"
But there was Jen, walking towards him, looking so incredibly beautiful in her white dress, and her hair tied back, and the most beautiful smile on her face, and ...
Suddenly the sky turned gray, but something was beginning to form in the sky; it was a whirlwind. His smile was replaced by a look of confusion, and the confusion was quickly followed by fear when he saw Jen float upward, swept up in the whirlwind.
Wes tried to catch up with Jen, but the ride suddenly seemed impossibly long. "Why was everyone sitting there watching? Why did nobody do anything?"
After what seemed like an eternity, he finally managed to get under the whirlwind, but Jen was almost out of reach now. He jumped desperately towards her and managed to grab her outstretched fingers, only to feel them slide down his hand as she was dragged through the hole that had appeared in the sky.
And all Wes could do when he fell to the ground and saw her disappear was scream. "Jen! No!"
Wes woke with a start. With a long-suffering sigh, still panting and sweating, he managed to murmur, "Jen ... whirlwind of time ...?"
Wes took a deep breath and tried to calm down. "It was just a nightmare ..." But it felt so real. Like that time he had a nightmare where a whirlwind of time appeared in the sky, taking Katie, Lucas, Trip and Jen.
He turned to see the time on his alarm clock: 3:10 am. He picked up the phone from its base, but before dialing a number, he simply looked at the phone. "It really shouldn't bother her, especially not tonight ..."
Then the phone rang in his hands, Wes took a deep breath and looked at the caller ID: Jen.
"Why should she be calling at this time?" he thought.
Finally he picked up the phone, pressed the call button, and held it to his ear. "Jen?"
"Wes!" she said, sounding surprised that he had finally responded. "I was starting to worry, I had a nightmare where I ended up marrying Alex instead of you."
"Jen, that is terrifying."
"Well," she said, in a calmer voice. "However, you don't seem to have woken up."
"Yes, well," he admitted, rubbing the back of his neck. "Actually, I was thinking of calling you too."
"Then why are you awake at this hour and why were you going to call me?" she asked.
"Why are you awake and called me first?" he answered.
"I asked you first."
"But I asked you later."
They both held their breath for a moment, waiting for the other to give in, before giving up and saying simultaneously, "I had a nightmare."
"About what!" They said together again.
"What was your nightmare about?" Jen said this time
Wes thought about returning the question, but the truth was, he really wanted to talk to her about it. He leaned back against the pillow and sighed. "It actually started very well. It was about ..."
"Wedding?" Jen finished for him.
"Yes!" Wes said. "And I was standing in front, waiting for you ..."
"... and I was walking towards you ..."
"You looked so beautiful."
"And you looked so handsome."
"And you had the biggest smile on your face," they both said together.
The memory brought a smile to Wes's face, but it quickly faded. "But then," he continued, "the sky darkened ..."
There was a pause at the other end of the phone before Jen laughed. "Okay, unless your dream didn't end up marrying someone else who looked like me."
"Yes, well, a whirlwind of time formed in the sky, and it started sucking you towards it." She tried to swallow the memory of that feeling of helplessness, and the fact that it didn't just originate with her dream. "Is that a sign that we should not be together?" He said quietly.
"I think it's the nerves for what's going to happen tomorrow, and that's why our subconscious created those nightmares"
"Oh," Wes said, feeling somewhat relieved. But something was still stirring in the back of his mind. "So are you nervous?"
Jen moved quickly to calm the insecurity that had infiltrated her voice. "Maybe." She sighed.
Wes relaxed again. "I guess I do too, Jen."
"So what do you think will happen tomorrow, and the next day, and the next?" she asked.
"Well, I don't know," he admitted. "But I know who I will hold in the future. And that is enough for me."
"That could be the most curiously romantic thing you have ever said to me."
"Well, that's because I love you, Jen."
"What did I do to deserve you, Wes?" She laughed.
"I don't know, Jen, but that doesn't matter." Wes said in a reassuring tone. "I still don't know what's going to happen in the future, but as long as we're together, I don't have to worry."
"You know, I feel much better. I'm glad we talked."
"So no one will think we broke the rule of not seeing the bride before the wedding," said Wes, "that's the other reason I hesitated to call you."
Jen sighed "I miss you, you know." Although they had seen each other 3 days ago, that seemed like an eternity. "However, we will see each other soon."
"Yeah," said Wes, thinking of the beginning of his dream.
Wes turned to see the alarm clock, which now read 3:27 in the morning. Sigh. "I think we should try to sleep now."
"Yeah," she agreed, but he could hear the same reluctance in her voice that she felt in her heart. "I don't want to have dark circles on our wedding day."
Wes chuckled. "No, neither do I. Although you would still look beautiful anyway."
"Whatever you say, Wesley, so good night."
"Yes, good night, Jen. I love you."
"I love you too," Jen answered before hanging up.
Wes dropped his phone on its base and then lay back on the bed, arms folded behind his head and a satisfied smile on his face. "This is what I call: Sweet dreams." he told himself before falling asleep.
