Hey guys! I was bored, and I just got done replaying Twilight Princess, and it hit me that maybe I should write a fan-fic for one of my favorite Zelda ships! I don't have much to say other than this is just a oneshot. I may write a story of these two later down the line, but I have other stories I'm going to have to work on. So, that may not come sooner. Anywho, let's quit the rambling and start! Hope you enjoy!
Cold. Goddesses was she cold in this forsaken desert in the middle of nowhere. She couldn't see any actual civilization anywhere, but that's to be expected. Who the hell wants to live in a place where you're dying of heatstroke during the day but during the night you're about to die from hypothermia. She hated it here. But she knew they had to traverse the long and winding desert, they had to get the Mirror of Twilight. She needed to save her people.
She looked over at her partner, a boy dressed in a green tunic, with white tights, brown boots, and a green cap that hung down to the bottom of his neck. Link... She couldn't bare to look at him for more than a few moments. His face only brought her pain, pain she had yet to figure out the source of.
Ever since she was attacked, and he and Zelda had saved her, she couldn't look at him in the eyes. Those beautiful, perfect blue eyes. She slapped her dreamy thoughts out of her mind, looking down at the sand.
She hated him. And she loved him at the same time. He cared for everyone, he was nice to everyone, he saved everyone. He puts everyone's burdens on his shoulders, and he bares them with a goddamn smile on his face.
And he never, not once, asks for compensation, or even a thank you. As if it was his obligation or some bullshit like that. She never understood him, she never could understand him. How someone can take so much damage, so much pain, and just... Stand up and not even spitting in the face of his enemy, he smiles.
Maybe she didn't hate him. She hated that she wanted to be him. She should have fought against Zant, she should have done more to help her people. Instead, she fled to the world of light, trying to find someone else to fight her battles, and let her people suffer while she was fine.
She looked at her small hands, clenching them as she gritted her teeth, And when I did find him... I used him and was nothing but awful to him. I deserve to suffer, just like I have made my people. She thought dejectedly, hanging her head.
"Midna," A soft yet strong voice said, shooting her out of her depressing thoughts. She looked at link, and stopped moving, "I think I see a Bulblin camp up ahead. Hop into my shadow and I'll take them out, and we can stay there for the rest of the night. Sound good?" He said, pointing to a piece of land with watch towers and a large fire in the center.
Link was a man of very few words, and every time he spoke his voice always made Midna feel so much safer. She bit her lip, turning away from the boy, "I... I want to help this time Link... You always do all the work... Let me help," She replied weakly, mentally facepalming at her stupidity. She sounded like a lost little girl in the woods. She hated herself sometimes.
Link looked over, a bit of surprise on his face, "Midna, I don't think you should. You could very easily get hurt. Let me handle it, okay? If I get hit, then you can come in. Deal?" He said slowly, turning to Midna, causing her to quickly turn her head away from him.
She always felt so useless. She was useless. She was just there while Link saved the world, while Link saved and helped everyone, never stopping to wind down, to relax. To have any fun. She was just a weight... Nothing more. And even that is generous. "Yeah... Of course..." She mumbled in reply, quickly shifting into his shadow.
Midna watched as he creeped around, his bow in hand as he thought of what was probably a genius plan to kill all of the Bulblins without them even realizing that they were dead. He slowly pulled his bow back, two arrows waiting to be shot from the string. He aimed down, holding his bow sideways he released them. They sped through the air, splitting it like a knife through paper as it whistled straight to two awaiting Bulblins on separate watchtowers. The arrows connected and the Bulblins stumbled a bit, before falling to the ground, presumably dead.
That's when Link rushed the camp, quickly slicing through three unsuspecting enemies who were standing next to the fire. Four more came rushing in from different parts of the camp, closing in on him. Midna for a split second thought she should come out to help him and make sure he wasn't overwhelmed, but, she knew better. He let them come in, and before they attacked he quickly back flipped behind them, allowing them to all collide. They fell to the ground, allowing Link to kill them effortlessly. He put his sword into it's awaiting scabbard and sighed, dusting off his tunic.
Midna quickly shot out from his shadow, turning back to him with a firm smirk. "Nice job! Quick and easy!" She said, stowing away any of her previous dejected attitude. "So! Are we going to set up camp or what?" She said and floated to the fire, turning her back to Link.
Unbeknownst to her, one of the Bulblins slowly stood up behind her, even though it was missing an arm, and had a gash across it's chest, it still managed to raise it's club over it's head, breathing heavily.
Minda looked over her shoulder and yelped, she tried to put her hands out in an attempt to attack, but she didn't have enough time as the club came swinging down straight for her head, she closed her eyes, anticipating the hard thump of wood and crack of her head against the club to ring through her ears before she fell unconscious. But, much to her surprise, she felt no such thing. She instead, felt a warm spray of liquid hit her chest and various parts of her face. She slowly opened her eyes and saw the green monster now standing still, it's club in the air, a shining silver blade sticking out of it's chest, blood painting it's shimmering beauty.
"L-Link..." She stuttered, watching as the blade was pulled out of the already maimed creature, it falling to the ground, dead. "Thank..."
He put his hand up, shaking his head before I could finish, putting his sword back into it's scabbard, "Don't worry about it," he said, a small smile on his face. He knelt down and grabbed a small cloth from his satchel, and grabbing a jar filled with water, dipping the cloth inside and wringing it out. He put the jar down and reached to her face, tilting her face up.
"W-What... Are you doing?" She asked, her face heating up, becoming a light shade of pink. Link and her were... Close... Far too close.
"You have blood on you," He said and took the cloth, wiping the purple liquid off of Midna's face.
Midna wanted to jump back, for multiple reasons. The water was cold, the cloth felt rough, despite Link's best efforts at being gentle, he was... Way too close to her... And... She had blood all over her. "Gross..." She mumbled, holding her arms out in an attempt to keep the rest of her body clean.
Link stopped and handed her the cloth, "Here, I got your face all cleaned up. I'll let you do your chest and whatever else. I'll set up camp."
She took the wet cloth and watched him walk to the fire, grabbing stuff from his satchel and laying it out.
Midna sighed, feeling both relieved, and a bit sad that Link left her, she hated him for the feelings he gave her. She hated herself for allowing herself to feel anything other than hatred, rage, anger. Not these... Feelings of happiness, content, care... She wanted it to go away.
But, no matter how hard she tried to push them away, no matter how much she tried focusing on all of the bad, her mind wandered off and returned back to Link. And all the feelings came flooding back into her heart like a tsunami.
She shook her head, and exhaled, taking the cloth and wiping off the rest of the blood from her body before it dried up. She checked herself after a few moments, making sure she was clean before tossing the rag to the side and walking over to Link, who was complete with setting up the camp.
Two thin blankets were laid out on the ground, with a small pillow accompanying them, along with another blanket neatly folded on top of the other. They were spread about 6 feet apart, and about 8 feet away from the blazing fire. Link was kneeling in front of it, cooking an Ordon Catfish and a Greengill.
Midna slowly walked up to him and sat next to him on the sand. She could float, if she really wanted to. But, she was tired, and if she started dozing off mid-air she could fall and embarrass herself. "Won't you hurry up?" She said, and nudged Link's side, looking up at him, her one showing eye glimmering a brilliant red in the light of the radiant moon above them.
Link nodded without response, turning the fish over to cook the other side. Midna sighed and hugged her legs to her chest, laying her head on her knees, facing away from Link.
She wished Link had talked more, with less nods and shrugs and thumbs up. She never understood his hesitancy with speaking, as if he was afraid that if he spoke wrong, something bad would happen.
She liked his voice, how soft yet stern it was, how comforting it could be.
She liked everything about him.
And she hated it.
She felt a poke to her arm and she looked over, and saw link holding a cooked Greengill fish on a stick a few inches away from her. He held it up to her, and smiled.
Minda smiled back, taking the stick from his hand and looking at the cooked fish, "Uh..." She looked away slightly, "Thank... Thank you," She said, playing with the sand with her bare feet.
"Of course." He quickly replied, taking his own fish and slowly biting into it. Midna watched him for a moment, a bit in shock at how nonchalantly he acknowledged her thanks. She hardly ever thanked anyone, she could probably think of all the times she had if given the time to remember.
She bit into her fish roughly, annoyed at the green clad boy in front of her.
They ate in a comfortable silence, giving Midna time to think about her feelings, albeit unwillingly. She sighed, and let her thoughts creep into her head, slowly, spreading through her brain.
Both good, and bad thoughts. She just wanted a blank mind, that's all she wanted. But, of course, the goddesses wanted her to suffer. They always did.
She threw her stick in the fire and looked over at Link, who was finished with his food, and just stared into the orange fire. The dancing flames bounced in his eyes, flickering in and out. Biting her lip, she clenched her hands on the cool sand, looking down.
"Link..." She muttered, getting the Hero's attention, his head turning to face hers.
"Hmm?" He looked at her, his eyes showing no direct emotion, other than perhaps... Content? His face, there laid a small smile. As if he wasn't sitting in a desert, with dead bodies of green skinned dimwitted bandits surrounding them out of view, as if he wasn't nursing wounds bandaged under his clothes, as if he wasn't sitting next to someone who has used him, and treated him like garbage.
"Why..." She started, shaking slightly, "Why are you so kind to me? Why do you do all of this for me? You don't need me here... We both know that," She continued, feeling tears well in her eyes, "You saved my life, and you have risked yours countless times. Why? For what? For who? Not the stupid, cruel, ugly beast next to you I'm sure..." She felt a tear fall down her cheek, "I've been so cruel... And you've been nothing but nice... You're one of the only people I have ever known who treated me like a friend... And I don't deserve any of it..."
Link listened to her, his smiling falling as he listened to his friend breaking down in front of him.
He stayed quiet for a moment, looking off into the darkness, his eyes searching for nothing, lost in thought.
Finally, he turned his head and smiled at Midna once more, but, unlike his other one, this one carried more with it... A caring undertone came with it, like the one he held when he was with the children from his village. "Midna..." He finally spoke, laying a hand on her shoulder, "Don't you for one second think I could have done any of this without you. If I hadn't had you, then I would either be dead, or wishing for death. And," He sighed, shaking his head, "I understand why you were cruel to me. Your world was taken over by a mad and evil king, everything you knew was destroyed and you were under more stress than most people could even comprehend, let alone feel. You wanted to save your world, and that was your goal. And you would do anything to have done that. So, I never was mean to you because even before I knew the situation of the Twili, I knew something was going on to make you act as hateful and cruel as you were."
He wiped a tear off the face of the shocked imp, "I risked my life for the girl who was helping me, I risked my life for the girl who gave me strength to keep going, I risked my life for the girl who keeps me sane. And I saved the life of a girl I couldn't do without," He said, and caressed her cheek softly.
Midna's mind was racing, she didn't know what to think. Not only was that the single most amount of words she had heard Link speak, ever, it was one of the most powerful things she had ever heard before. It made her heart burst, and she showed it by throwing herself into his arms.
Link accepted the embrace, and rubbed her back softly, "And, you're right I didn't do anything for the stupid, cruel, and ugly beast next to me," He said, making Midna stiffen up, and sadness to once again envelop her. She knew she deserved that title, and she knew he would still think of her any other way. But, it still hurt her, knowing she was still just nothing...
"I just met that Bullbo, like, 40 minutes ago," He said and pointed the boar like creature sleeping a few yards away from their camp, Midna's eyes were now laced with confusion, looking up at the Hero. "I did it for the smart, amazing, cunning, and beautiful girl who happens to be sitting in my lap," He tilted her chin up, and he looked down at her.
Midna's face was burning hot, her whole body was hot, and so was his breath that was hitting her face. "Link..." She whispered.
Link didn't say anymore, and just looked deeply into her eye. He leaned down slowly, and lightly planted a kiss onto Midna's lips.
Shockwaves went through the small imp as she felt lips hit hers for the first time in her life. Her mother, her father, nor and man had ever preformed such an act with her. And... She had just found out how much she needed it.
She returned the kiss, and put a hand on his cheek, enjoying every moment of the warm embrace, and savoring every moment of the sacred kiss.
Link pulled away slowly, holding her hand and smiling like a goofball, "If you can't tell how I feel about you now, then we may have to go to a doctor and get your eyes checked," He said jokingly, rubbing the back of his head.
"Link..." Midna replied after a few moments of silence, "Do... Do you love me?"
He laughed and took his green cap off, "Midna. I've never felt my heart connect with another's on this level my whole life. And, if my assumption is correct, I assume that feeling is love. So, that means that," He kissed her forehead, "I do indeed love you, Midna."
Midna felt more tears in her eyes as she listened to the... No, her hero speak those words. Those three, little, words. "I love you too, Link..." She whispered, laying her head on his midsection.
"Good, now, get some rest, okay?" He said, and looked at the fire, "I'll stay up a little longer."
"Okay..." She said and closed her eyes, her arms wrapped around him, nuzzling him slightly as she felt her world fade away, but took the only thing that mattered into her world of sleep.
Him.
Wow! That was awful! Well, maybe not. But maybe so. That's up to you, I suppose. Anyways, this is just a little oneshot I made to get myself prepped for writing an actual in depth and I dunno, good story. I hope you liked this though! I put a little more effort into it than I thought I would have, but I lacked the want of writing, which is always the most important thing. Anyways, leave a review if you want! Otherwise, have a nice day/night! Thanks for reading! You make my day more than you could ever know :)
