Chapter 12 : Searching Nothing
The sirens are resounding and I don't know why!
Why is this happening!? I thought the Endbringer won't attack until three months!
It is still February 28. I think an Endbringer attacked another city though I don't know when. I didn't have any news about that.
It's almost the end of the month so I think the Endbringer won't attack here now!
Maybe an Endbringer just got delayed for awhile and was just really going to start attacking a city. Though, who is the Endbringer going to attack this city then?
[DENIAL]
Huh? It's not the Endbringers?

Queenie just showed me an image of a lot of Nanomachines exponentially reproducing all over the world. It seems like normal humans can't really see the nanomachines even with their technology.
But everything changes if we included Parahuman shenanigans. Tinkertechs, precogs, postcogs, and other Thinker and Tinker derived abilities can easily see through the Nanomachines. It doesn't matter if they act like normal air, their powers can just easily see that the whole place was covered in Nanomachines.
And even if the Nanomachines can't do anything without any order for them, all Tinkers and Thinkers will jump to the conclusion that the whole world will end. Sentient nanomachines will invade the whole world.
It seems like even Queenie first thought about that when she first encountered a Nanomachine (it seems like when I became Reina, Nanomachines suddenly popped out in her true body or whatever she meant by it). She then learned that the Nanomachines were harmless when she integrated herself to the Nanomachines.
Nanomachines are very harmless. In fact, they are actually good for the body. They turn the body as healthy as possible until the person became old, less prone to diseases, not easily killed, and it seems like Nanomachines have the side effect of putting a mild regenerative factor to any living organisms. It's not really a regenerative factor, it's more of the Nanomachines idly doing their jobs of helping living organisms survive the world.
It seems like the sole purpose of the Nanomachines is to give as many conveniences as possible to all living creatures. Though to give them an order, people needs a corresponding administrative privileges. Also, while their purpose is to make any living beings in a world survive, they won't necessarily help actively.
So if someone was dying, the Nanomachines won't care. It just gave some convenience to the humans but if they wanted more, they should have the enough administrator level first before acquiring more of it's benefits.
And only me as Reina and Miles have that privilege. Any other else can only use the small benefits that the Nanomachines can do.
But of course, the other powers would think that (Nanomachines = Doomsday). I even read at some posts on PHO that it was banned all over the world. Those who can do this are already considered as S-Class Threats and a Kill Order will immediately follow that declaration.

Praise me more, praise me more! It feels like that's what she was telling me.
So I patted her Nano's (Queenie) head while feeling amused by her actions.
Anyway, I should think through this more seriously!
This is seriously bad for me. Queenie predicts that if Thinkers started looking for the culprit, they will immediately find me.
So what should I do?
[SUGGESTION]
"Oh, I see!" I exclaimed in relief after hearing Queenie's suggestion.
Queenie just suggested for me to change forms. She explained to me that when I changed into other forms, another form of energy will start appearing within me. For Sicily, it's Mana. If I turn into Miles and Reina, it will be Nanomachines. Only knowledge and skills were compiled for me when I turned into Ringo Ohoshi and Keine Kanzaki. As for Francette, it seems like she was releasing an energy called Magic and it seems like it was very different than Sicily's Mana. Or so what Queenie said.
Queenie told me that when I changed forms, I can fool other Thinkers into thinking that I am a different person. Just like how the Nanomachines won't be able to recognize me if I didn't register myself to them through Queenie, the Thinkers can't also recognize me if I turned into another form.
If they are looking for someone, they would be looking for Miles and Reina. But only I have that forms and if I changed to another form that was neither them, their Thinker power will go through nowhere.
That was how Queenie explained it to me.
She said something about Parahuman Thinkers not being able to calculate or predict someone that doesn't even exist in this world. Also, it seems like my other forms doesn't exist in any alternate worlds. This makes me essentially a blank slate for them. Or more like, I am an enigma to them because I kept changing into other forms, making them confuse if my previous forms are really existing or not at all.
I am curious how Queenie understood how Parahuman powers works but then I remembered that she was Scion's fan so I think this alien researched as much as possible to have a conversation with Scion?

And just when I did that, a white circular rip in space suddenly appeared in front of me. And from there I saw a woman with a fedora hat peeking her head out of the portal.

Is this person one of the PRT agents? Maybe they are hunting the culprit behind these Nanomachines?

Her gaze finally landed at me. My gaze landed at her gaze. We stared at each other for awhile.
... This is awkward. Maybe I should say something?
Before I could even do that though, the woman quickly vanishes to the portal and just as quickly as it appears, it also vanishes without any trace of it's existence left.
"... Oooookay?"
This day is getting weirder.
"Not there" Contessa said without her expression changing.
"Then, where is the Tinker doing this fiasco?" That was Doctor Mother who asked that.
"They are gone. Can't path them anymore" She replied with a monotone.
"Damn... this is ruining a lot of our plans on Earth Bet" Doctor Mother muttered that under her breath.
[QUERY]
When one of the shards reported to his network, he became slightly curious. So even while feeling depressed, he goes over there to investigate.
And while investigating, he told all the shards in his network to report to him about the mysterious factor spreading in this world.
Now, he was on the skies of the European Seas and was staring at the mass reproducing numbers of the Nanomachines. So he tried asking what it is.
[NANOMACHINES]
The Nanomachines understood Scion's question so they replied to him with the new language that they compiled in their knowledge. The knowledge came from the mysterious administrator that occasionally overrides their control of self whenever it appeared.
Though it took the nanomachines a long time before they finally compiled the language of the Entities, they finally managed to do it. The Nanomachines were just thinking of what to name this new language when Scion suddenly pinged them.
[PURPOSE]

And when Scion asks for their purpose, he was surprised when they tokd him that they are preserving all life.
Though in reality, what the Nanomachines are trying to convey is that they are here to help people survive a bit longer. But it was lost in translatiom when Scion hears it.
The nanomachines are smart but because the language the Entity uses is very advance even in their level so even though they know the language now, they still can't use the language perfectly.
Which of course, being an Entity that doesn't think at all, Scion jumps to the conclusion that these new factor are also looking for the solution to prevent Entropy.
[CYCLE]

Scion asks if they will try and disturb their research all over this world using the native inhabitants of this world and the Nanomachines just told him that they have no interest to what he was going to do.

And finally, after making sure that these new factors are harmless to the Cycle, he asks if they wanted to help him in their research. The Nanomachines agreed.
[EXCHANGE]
Scion asks the new factor to give some sample of them to him so he can study about them. In exchange, he will give some energy, thinking that the new factor also needed some fuel for their journey to look for the Solution.
But the Nanomachines already have a hypothesis about the energy these Entities are using so they rejected him.
[INAPPROPRIATE]
Scion is confused why they rejected his offer. He thinks the offer he is asking is pretty reasonable for them.
But he didn't know that the Nanomachines saw that the powers used by these Parahuman in this continent were very inefficient. It uses too much energy for just a minimal effect over reality.
Nanomachines can achieved this with nothing but themselves. They were made to replaced waste energy after all.
[PROPOSAL]
So they proposed another offer for Scion. This time Scion was eager to accept it.
They will give Scion some of them and in exchange, they wanted to learn more about the Parahumans and anything else in this universe.
[AGREEMENT]
So with that, Scion made an agreement with the Nanomachines.
Then Scion took some of them and put them in his main body to be processed and observed by his many innovation type and observation type shards.
It was just a single microsecond when he got hold of a Nanomachine but he suddenly became shocked in amazement.
The Nanomachines are multiplying in his true body by taking the energies surrounding them and using that to reproduce.
He panicked for a third of a nanoseconds before he notices that the Nanomachines was also acting as his energy. They are acting like a new energy for him!
They are replacing the energies surrounding them and using those to create more Nanomachines. The Nanomachines then repeated this on the other surrounding energies. Other than that, they are idly floating on the air. Even if his harvesting and processing shards took the Nanomachines inside them, the Nanomachines doesn't care and just continue in their work.
When the shards uses the Nanomachines themselves, they are surprisingly more efficient on energy usage. Also, the Nanomachines can release more energy and use it to replicate themselves more.
They are like a perpetual energy.
In fact, the new factor might be the Solution they are looking for.
[SATISFACTION]
Scion was satisfied and was very thankful for the Nanomachines.
He is still loss at the fact that his partner is dead but with this discovery, the goal of his race is becoming closer to his grasp.
[DATA]
Then the Nanomachines nudged him to give them the price for giving him some of their parts.
Nanomachines doesn't care really. They might be asking for information but they are just doing that so when another person with the right administration rights appears, they can use their new knowledge to help them. It was how they are made after all. These weird entity is just someone they have no data of so they wanted to learn more of him so when an administrator appears, they can easily answer him or her.
Thus, the Nanomachines continues on their carefree idling while replicating all over the world. Scion was having a misunderstanding that these Nanomachines are his allies when in truth, they are just curious to him.
With this, another dangerous thing was averted.

First of all... I am scared of publishing this chapter!
This chapter took a lot of rewrites and I am still not satisfied with this chapter.
So I should just rewrite it more you say?
Well, if I didn't publish this for a long time, I will lose all my motivation on writing. I lose motivation everytime I got stuck in a single chapter for a long time.
So yeah, I decided to just be satisfied with this chapter and post it now so I can move on to the next.
Why did I got stuck in this chapter? Because of the interactions of a lot of characters!
I will say this again, I have a faulty knowledge of Worm. My whole knowledge about Worm came from the fanfictions on this site and Spacebattles, along with some quests that I read from the first page up to their last pages.
So the deleted scenes here are : Cauldron's full reaction, Brockton Bay's PRT Base whole reaction, Dragon's reaction, Narwhal's reaction, Coil's reaction (because he got accessed to the PRT files), reaction of some random people, the other factions that I don't even know on other countries, the online conference from all over the North America hosted by Dragon, Armsmaster's reaction, and a lot more.
Yeah, a lot. I don't even know all the factions on Worm. I only know Empire Eighty Eight, Azn Bad Boyz, Archer's Bridge Merchants, Faultline's Crew (Faulty knowledge), Undersiders, BB Protectorate and Wards, Boston Wards (Incomplete knowledge), The Travelers (Faulty Knowledge), Coil's organization, Triumvirate, Cauldron (Faulty Knowledge), Slaugterhouse Nine (Faulty Knowledge), Nilbog (Faulty Knowledge), Accord and his Ambassadors (Incomplete Knowledge), The Teeth (Faulty Knowledge), the Dragonslayers, and the Guild (Incomplete Knowledge). Oh, and Uber & L33t before I forgot.
Yeah... A lot of incomplete and faulty knowledge about those factions that I know. Other than that, I only read of Haven, Adepts, Heartbroken, Gesselschaft, Yangban, and a lot of factions that I don't know. I don't even known character in the Birdcage other than Glaistig Uaine and Teacher.
It wasn't that I am not reading that much. It seems like most fanfictions doesn't used those characters and a lot of those fanfictions are also dropped earlier before they got out of Brockton Bay.
So yeah... I only have a decent knowledge of Brockton Bay out of everything in the whole Worm series. And even with that, I am not confident I know it so much that I won't mess up when I wrote this story.
Of course I am still going to write. It's been so long since I got another drive to write this much again. I don't want to lose my motivation again.
I would love to read the source material but it seems like there are no PDF files for Worm. Wildbow stops people from making Epub or PDF of his stories because of publishing reasons and I think I can understand... still, I don't have an internet everytime so I prefer reading things offline!
... Anyway, sorry for that long rant... I am sorry this chapter was delayed for a lot of time... I hope you have fun in this story...
