THIRTY-ONE

Note: Finally found time to update.

"So you're saying. If I do this…" Nigel swallowed. "This trial will end, and I will be cleared of the charges against me."

The council members looked at one another and whispered until one of them spoke.

"You will be the one to order the attack on Earth."

Numbuh 1 gasped loudly. In shock by the fact that the only way to prove his loyalty is to give the order to launch a strike on Earth. He had heard about this before. A member was specifically chosen by the council to attack the targeted planet. Using a scanner they would input their genetic material into a scanner. The scanner would then send coordinates to all GKND operatives letting them know which planet to eradicate. So what was the scanner for exactly?

It needs genetic material from the planet's main organism. In this case, human DNA. Numbuh 1's DNA. There had been countless operatives that basically sent the signal to get rid of their own home planets. Nigel looked at Numbuh 9L. She looked like she had tears in her eyes. "This happened to her," Nigel thought.

"And that is how I prove my loyalty?"

The council members all said the word yes in unison.

"It's time Nigel," Numbuh 74.239 said sadly and pushed a button.

An image of a swirling blue and green marble appeared on the big monitor in front of Numbuh 1. This was a live satellite image of Earth.

Nigel looked down at his feet. This will launch the strike and may ultimately cause the destruction of the entire planet. How he wished to himself that he didn't have to go through with this...but he knew that the Numbuh 74.239 was right. The planet is infested and must be terminated.

"You understand Nigel Uno. Before you give the order, you must first give us a full report on the planet we are targeting." The council said in unison.

As if things weren't bad enough, now Numbuh 1 had to describe in detail his home planet. But the council didn't care. They were just playing with him. While he wanted to talk about how great Earth was. Backyard barbeques, beautiful scenery, spending time with friends, going on missions…, but he knew he just had to state the facts logically.

"Earth. A Class G planet," he began. "The only one in its locality capable of sustaining carbon-based life due to its abundance of water and atmosphere. Home to over 8.7 million lifeforms. The planet's dominant species is human...of which there are approximately 7 billion. Of that number, more than three-quarters are over the age of thirteen...in other words...adults," Nigel said, adding a dark emphasis to the word adults. He knew the statistics of Earth backwards and forwards. In fact, he had been checking on the numbers ever since he had left.

Nigel then gave a quick salute to the council members. A small panel rose up out of the floor. It was round with a small opening in the middle for genetic deposits. In a swift motion, he stuck his finger in his nose and pulled out some genetic material. He was ready. Ready to get this over with. Ready to end it all.

He was about to place the genetic material into the panel but was interrupted.

"No!" A familiar voice called. "My family is there...your family! Our friends!"

"It's ruled by adults. Infested. Too far gone." Nigel responded trying to make Chad understand.

"What about Sector V? Hoagie, Kuki, Wallaby, and Abigail!" Chad responded in anger. "Abby would never let you do this…" He ended the sentence with a softer tone.

Before Numbuh 1 could respond, one of the council members spoke up.

"There! Do we need more proof of where this one's allegiance lies?"

"This human is not a galactic level operative!"

"There are no human galactic level operatives!" Another said with an electronic voice.

"Uh… actually that's not true." Numbuh 74.239 interrupted. Suddenly, Numbuh 74.239's monitor began acting up. "Ugh! Who was running your tech department while I was on Earth. Numbuh moron!"

"Who are you calling moron! You've been on Earth so long you reek of adult! Just like that one!"

Pretty soon everyone was talking all at once. It sounded like a mismatch of various electronic voices that you couldn't tell what anyone was saying or who was saying what. Monitors began lighting up all over the place, brightening up the otherwise darkened room.

"The decision does not come lightly. The decision is-" They said in unison before they were interrupted once more.

"Don't do it Nigel! This isn't what the kids next door is about!" Chad yelled this even louder. The council had had enough. The light overhead Chad was turned out leaving just the council, Numbuh 1, and the image of Earth still beaming.

"The decision is Nigel Uno's." They said in unison. With that, the word "Uno" echoed throughout the chamber.

Numbuh 1 looked down at the scanner once more. The arrows directed toward the placement of the genetic deposit. He then looked at the image of Earth. How beautiful it looked! But also how sad. He knew that the planet had become infested long ago, and now he had to say goodbye. When he placed his hand against his brow for another salute, a small tear rolled down his cheek. Numbuh 74.239 was right. It was time.

"Galactic Kids Next Door Rules!" He cried out and placed his booger into the scanner.
