Title: Nightmare
A/N: This is a trigger warning, there's hint of rape in this and some PTSD. Just wanted to give you a warning. Read at your own risk!
It was a blustery winter day in Chicago, and the team had a rough day. They were in the middle of a case, when one of their own went missing while tracking down a lead. Voight had switched up the partners to change things up for once, Halstead and Burgess were paired together, Atwater and Upton were paired together, leaving Ruzek and Rojas together. Halstead and Burgess were looking for leads at one location their suspect had previously visited, while Ruzek and Rojas were at the district, digging into financials and the background of their suspect. They knew exactly who they were looking for, he was currently in the wind though. Voight gave Atwater and Upton the task to visit his last known location and canvas scene again.
Atwater and Upton pulled up to the scene, to find the door of the vacant house open again. They looked around the house to see nothing really out of place, no unusual vehicles around the area. Immediately they drew their weapons, there was no time to call for backup. Kevin took the back of the house while Hailey took the front. The blonde detective carefully walked up the steps and peered open the door. Walking in on a crime in progress never really scared her, no matter how dangerous the criminal could be. She walked into the house a little further, when she felt a presence behind her. Before she knew it, she had a bag over her head, gun to her back and was being dragged out of the house. She somehow dropped her star and holstered her gun. She wasn't going to put up a fight unlike she usually would, she knew her team would find her wherever the kidnapper was taking her.
—
Atwater cleared the rest of the house, thinking he was going to meet Hailey at some point.
"Hailey? You upstairs?" He called, thinking maybe she cleared the upstairs. When he heard nothing in return, he started to panic. He searched around the front room Hailey was presumably last in. He found her badge on the floor and dialed Voight's number.
"Hey Sarge, Hailey and I are at the last known, we cleared the place, but Hailey's gone. I think she's been abducted. Our suspect must've been here." Kevin said in a calm tone, which he was surprised by.
—
The team rolled up to the scene, and immediately the rest of Intelligence gathered at the front of the house. Kevin briefed everyone on what went down.
"Hailey and I rolled up, we saw the front door was open, we looked around the area and saw nothing suspicious. We had our guns drawn, I took the back of the house, she took the front. I cleared the kitchen, and never heard her clear anything. I walked in the living room to see where she was when she wasn't down here, I went upstairs thinking maybe she went up there. She wasn't there, I came back down and found her badge on the floor. Our suspect must've been here and waiting or something."
Everyone remained quiet as Voight rattled off orders. Kevin was half listening, thinking about what he could've done differently. He was supposed to be watching out for Hailey, how could he let this happen to her. Everyone dispersed after Voight gave his orders, and Adam stood by Kevin's side.
"It should've been me. I should've taken the front." Kevin said softly.
"It's not your fault. It could happen to anyone, this isn't on you man." Adam said, placing a reassuring hand on his friend's shoulder. Kevin nodded and they parted ways to do what they were told.
—
Hailey woke up to find herself on a bed, in restraints. She panicked for a minute, not sure what was happening. Her head felt heavy, she was definitely drugged with something, she realized she had no control of her hands, they were handcuffed to the headboard behind her. She tried to move her lips to no avail, of course the kidnapper put duct tape over her mouth, why wouldn't he? She looked down and was relieved to see she was still wearing clothes, but her police vest, and holster was gone. What was going on? So many thoughts ran through her head, she saw the kidnapper and suspect at the foot of the bed pacing back and forth grinning at her. She let out muffled screams as her abductor started inching closer to the bed. If Hailey wasn't freaking out before, she was now. More so having flashbacks to what happened a few years ago to her.
—
The team is back at the district, trying to find anything new to lead them to the suspect. Clearly, he had another location where that was, was beyond them at this point. Jay was walking out of the locker room, he had been pretty quiet since Hailey went missing but everyone knew how upset this made him. Hailey and Jay had been dating for a little while now, and it had been obvious to everyone in the unit, even Voight that they liked each other. They finally took the chance and decided to date, only to have this happened. Jay was worried about his partner and girlfriend, but knew she could handle herself, she was strong and she had proved that time and time again. Jay was stopped in his tracks by Kevin in the hallway.
"Jay, listen man. I'm sorry, I should've taken the front. I should've had Hailey's back." Kevin was still beating himself up over this, Jay could see how bad he felt for this.
"Kev, you didn't know any of this was going to happen. There's no way you could've seen any of this coming. Hailey's strong, she can take care of herself until we get to her. We'll get a lead soon." Jay said, reminding himself not to get upset. Everyone was surprised at how calm Jay was through all of this. But really, Jay knew he couldn't let his feelings overcome him and take over, otherwise Voight would take him off of the case and Jay wanted to be there when they found Hailey. Jay and Kevin shared a brotherly hug and walked back to the bullpen.
"Do we have anything new?" Voight said as everyone gathered around the whiteboard, sharing their new findings. Jay was listening somewhat, zoning out the rest. He had one leg on Hailey's desk, usually she would be sitting in the chair or on the desk right next to him, but right now she was God knows where, probably fighting for her life.
He was pulled out of his thoughts when he heard his phone ring. It was set to vibrate, but whenever Hailey called him it was supposed to ring. He looked down at the screen to see Hailey's picture and her name flash across the screen. Everyone in the room stopped as Jay answered with a confused look.
"Hails?" Jay had the phone on speaker phone, when he heard muffled screams, those were definitely Hailey's, they had to be because she wasn't on the other end of that phone. "Hailey!" Voight signaled for Ruzek to ping the phone call. This was how they were going to find Hailey's location.
"I've got your little detective here, and she's struggling. I might just have to put a stop to that pretty soon."
"What do you want Daniels?" Jay said through gritted teeth, if anything happened to his partner, he'd never let this guy see the light of day again.
"I want full immunity and protection. But I want to have some fun first, and I might just do that with your detective." With that the line went dead and Jay threw his phone.
"I've got an address, 2145 S. Archer Ave. We've gotta roll." Adam said, practically jumping out of his seat.
"Let's go." Voight said as they grabbed their coats and practically ran out of the district. No words were said between Kim and Jay, she drove the vehicle knowing he wouldn't be able to drive. They had just pulled out of the district when his phone rang again.
—
Hailey kept pulling at her restraints, wishing these weren't police grade handcuffs. Her abductor kept pacing back and forth in front of the bed. She had just heard Jay's voice on the phone and wished he was here right now. They knew their suspect wasn't good, he was a criminal after all, he had raped and killed many women in the Chicagoland area, but was really capable and had the balls of doing that to a Chicago detective.
"Let's have a little fun before I get rid of you shall we?" He unbuckled and unbuttoned his pants, crawling onto the bed, to get closer to Hailey. She tried to kick him, but he had placed his legs over hers. He pushed her shirt up and gripped onto her body. She felt her eyes getting watery, she knew what was coming. Where was the team to save her?
She felt Daniels' lips against her neck and yanked at the restraints again. He moved his hands down to her jeans and flicked the button. This was really happening. She wanted to block it out so badly. She felt the cold air hitting her skin and looked down to find her skinny jeans down to her calves. Daniels was sitting up, Hailey could guess what was going to happen next, she had been through this before and she didn't want to be reminded of it. She screwed her eyes shut, she didn't want to watch what was going to happen next.
"Wait, before I have my way with you, let's call your little boyfriend and let him listen in on this." Daniels said with a Cheshire Cat grin spread across his face. One thought ran through Hailey's mind, she didn't want Jay to hear this, Daniels could do anything he wanted to her, but she didn't want Jay to hear this.
—
Jay and Kim were so close to the location, nothing was said in the car and Jay was in his own world. A loud noise rang out through the car, it was 'Hailey' calling Jay's phone again.
"Hello." Jay answered.
"Right before I put a bullet in your partner's head, I figured I would include you in on the fun we're going to have." Daniels says, and Jay just listens. He hears Hailey's muffled screams and what sounds like handcuffs clanking against a piece of wood. He needed Kim to step on the gas. He heard the bed creak as he assumed Hailey was being tortured. He heard Daniels grunt and knew it couldn't be good.
—
Hailey heard Jay's voice on the other end of the phone and let a few tears slip, that was going to be the last time she heard his voice wasn't it. She looked at Daniels who was grinning and sitting opposite of her, teasing her and pushing her undergarments aside. She wanted this to be over.
It had felt like hours since she just heard Jay's voice, but it had only been a few minutes. She tried to take her mind elsewhere, her eyes were clamped shut and her head was turned to the side. She wanted to think about anything else right now. What felt like hours, was only minutes. Hailey just wanted this to be over. She felt Daniels weight over her as she wanted to fight but didn't have the energy to.
Suddenly, she heard loud noises downstairs and her ears perked up. She heard the team clear the downstairs area, and she started screaming through the tape.
"Hailey, Hails!" Jay's voice rang out as she heard feet bound up the steps and tried to work up the strength in her legs, with no luck. Daniels was still putting weight on her legs. She let out another scream and opened her eyes to see Jay and Ruzek in the bedroom. Thank god it was them, she didn't want the rest of her team to see her like this.
Jay pulled Daniels off of Hailey and Ruzek apprehended him, once Jay saw Ruzek had Daniels and walked him out of the room, he went over to Hailey and uncuffed her and took the tape off of her mouth.
"Hailey, are you hurt? Where does it hurt babe?"
"My stomach." Hailey cried but also pointed to her pelvic area. Jay found a blanket and draped it over her legs. He figured she'd be sensitive to the touch down there and didn't want to put her through anymore pain. He picked her up bridal style and carried her out of the house. The rest of the team practically ran over when they saw Hailey in Jay's arms, but realized they needed stay back. While Hailey was being checked out by the paramedics, Jay walked over to Voight.
"How is she?"
"Traumatized, they're going to take her to Med for a rape kit. It seems like maybe he tried something, but they're not sure. I'm going to ride with her, they want to check her vitals and make sure she's okay." Jay said as Voight nodded. The rest of the team would finish up at the scene and then meet Jay and Hailey at the hospital.
Hailey and Jay had left the scene in the ambulance. The detectives remained quiet in the ambulance, just holding hands. They felt the ambulance come to a stop once and for all. The doors opened and Hailey stood up. There was nothing inhibiting her from walking, and she certainly wasn't going to be wheeled into the ED on a gurney. She was met with a nurse waiting for her. They escorted her to an empty ED bay, gave her a hospital gown to change into and had her sit down on the bed.
Jay took her clothes and stood next to her bed. The nurse came in to administer the rape kit, she kindly asked Jay to step outside, and Jay's eyes met Hailey's.
"Jay, I'll be fine. I'm safe now." He didn't want to leave her side again. Jay nodded silently and stepped out. He saw Will walking around the ED.
"Hey Jay, what's up?"
"Um, Hailey was kidnapped, they're doing a rape kit on her now."
"Jay, I'm so sorry. Is she okay?"
"Uh, she will be over time." Jay nodded and patted Will's shoulder. "I gotta go meet with the team, they're just outside."
Jay walked out to the waiting area to see the rest of the team minus Atwater, who was presumably back at the district with Daniels and Platt booking him.
"Hailey's okay, they're just doing a rape kit now."
"That's good to hear, that she's okay." Voight said, nodding at the rest of the team. "Listen, when they discharge her, you two can take the rest of the day off. Take her home and have her rest."
Jay nodded at that order from Voight, that's all he wanted right now. The team left the hospital and headed back to the district, while Jay walked in to see Hailey.
"Good news, when you get released we can go home and chill. Voight let us have the rest of the day off."
"Good, because I wouldn't want to go back to work." Hailey said, chuckling for the first time all day. They spend another hour or two at the hospital, and get the results of the test. Hailey just had bruising on her pelvic bone and stomach.
—
The couple had gotten back home a few hours ago. Jay gave her the choice of going back to her apartment or his, and she decided on his apartment opting for privacy. It wasn't that she didn't love Vanessa, she did, but she just wanted some time with Jay and to just relax with him.
Jay had made them some dinner, while Hailey had taken a hot bath. She changed into her favorite flannel of Jay's that he had 'stolen' and a pair of leggings. She sat down on the couch with Jay and ate dinner while watching another episode of "The Office" on Netflix. They were in the middle of binging a drama on Netflix, but after the day they had, Hailey just wanted something comedic to watch. After a few hours of watching "The Office", Jay had noticed Hailey was fast asleep on his shoulder, he decided to turn off the show and carry her to bed. She needed a good nights rest.
—
Jay woke up at 3AM to someone kicking him and then felt a jab to his stomach. He knew what was happening. Hailey was having a nightmare, he figured this would happen given the events of the day. He came out of his slumber completely when he heard Hailey whimpering and talking in her sleep.
"No, please don't. No." Hailey said as she started crying. He figured this nightmare wasn't just from today because she had tape over her mouth. He knew about her past, he knew she was raped long ago, not by Booth though. By someone long before Booth. He gently woke her up, knowing that if he let her go through this nightmare anymore it wouldn't be good. Usually it was him having nightmares, but tonight it was Hailey, understandably so too.
"Hailey. Hails, it's okay baby I'm here. I've got you." He said softly pulling Hailey into his chest. She kept thrashing in her sleep. Jay ran his hand over her forehead to feel sweat, and pulled her hair away from her head. "Shh Hails, it's okay. It's not real."
Hailey stopped thrashing in her sleep and suddenly her breathing evened back out. He leaned back against the headboard and rubbed her back. She nestled her head into his chest and rubbed her hand over his torso, humming in her sleep. He stayed up for the next few hours listening to her breathe and watching her sleep. She looked so peaceful and innocent asleep in his arms. He couldn't imagine the pain and trauma she had experienced in the past. He couldn't even put himself in her shoes and think about what she had went through. He hoped that they could put this rough day behind them and move forward, however he knew that would be difficult given their jobs and her past. He wouldn't ever leave her though, he'd help her through more of these nightmares, just like she helped him through his.
A/N: Let me just go hide now. I didn't mean for this to get so dark, I really just wanted to showcase the nightmare part and domestic Upstead. But it spiraled into something else. Hailey wasn't raped by Booth, we all know that, but I decided to add another experience from her past, where she did get raped and has some trauma from it.
