Hey, everybody. Back with another chapter.
Let's get to it.
Chapter 13- District 2
I slowly make my way towards the bay that looks into Peeta's room. I've been recovering over the last week or so. I'm finally regaining my voice, and my first request was to speak to Peeta. Plutarch said I wasn't allowed to yet, but they will let me watch as they try and see how Peeta reacts to someone he knows from home.
I haven't had a ton of visitors over the last week. Surprisingly, my most frequent visitor has been Vision. I surprisingly like having Vision around. Maybe its because of how much he's able to share with me about the old world before the disasters that tore the world apart. Maybe its his innocent personality. Maybe it's the fact that he's one of the ones that's been sent into Peeta's room, and apparently Peeta has reacted well to meeting and talking with Vision. But, for whatever reason, I like having him around.
That's partly why he's floating along behind me and Plutarch right now. And just to make sure nobody bothers me.
As we enter the room, I see Haymitch waiting for us. I walk up to the window and see Peeta still lying on his bed, strapped down.
"Send her in," Plutarch says. There's a loud beeping, and a moment later, the door into the room opens and Prim walks in.
"Peeta?" she asks to get his attention.
"Prim," he says in surprise.
"She's too close," Haymitch says, but Plutarch raises a hand.
"How are you?" Prim asks.
"How did you get here?" Peeta asks.
"We live in District 13 now. It's a real place. The stories are true. You were rescued," Prim says to Peeta.
Peeta looks down, then says, "My family hasn't come to see me." That statement makes my heart drop for several reasons. He then adds, "There was an attack on 12."
"Yes," Prim confirms.
"My family?" Peeta asks.
"The bakery didn't survive," Prim responds with emotion in her voice.
Peeta looks away from her, clearly trying to contain his emotions. At first, his expression is one of sadness. Then, it hardens, and he says, "It's because of Katniss. It was because of Katniss."
"It wasn't because of her," Prim says.
"Did she tell you to say that?" Peeta demands.
"She didn't tell me anything," Prim says, trying to calm Peeta down.
"She's a liar, Prim. It's a trick," Peeta says.
"Peeta, what you're saying isn't real," Prim says.
Peeta looks at Prim with a look of realization. "She sent you here to talk to me. She knows you're here now," he says.
"It's okay," Prim tries to say.
But Peeta cuts her off, his voice getting progressively louder as he shouts, "You can't trust her. She's a monster! She's a mutt the Capitol created to destroy us!"
"Get her out of there," Haymitch says as Peeta begins screaming to Prim that she has to kill me. I just look on in horror at he continues screaming.
"Katniss, this is just a conditioned response. It's not him," Plutarch says, trying to reassure me.
"No. It's not him," I manage to say after a few moments as Robert steps into the room to take Prim out. I then turn and walk slowly out.
As I make my way out, Cressida walks up to me. "Hey. How are you feeling?" she asks.
"I have no idea," I say in a very hoarse voice.
Cressida nods. Then, she says, "Well, hopefully you'll be up to getting back into training soon. I want to start training with my new team leader."
"Huh?" I say, not sure what she means.
Cressida smiles, then stretches out her arm towards a wall and makes a sign with her hand, pulling her middle and ring fingers in while extending the others. To my surprise, a jet of webbing shoots out and attaches to the wall.
I look at it, then look at Cressida, a smile growing on my face. "Well. I guess…welcome to the Avengers, Spider Woman," I say.
Cressida smiles back. "I've been working with Robert. He's been training me on how to use my suit. But I can't wait to start training with the rest of the team," she says.
"And we'll be excited to start training with you," I say. I pause for a moment, then say, "Excuse me. I need to go meet with Coin." Cressida nods, and I walk off towards Command.
As I enter Command, I see Coin meeting with several advisors. When she sees me walking in, she excuses her advisors.
I walk over and sit down across from her. She looks at me and says, "I'm glad you're feeling better."
The two of us look at each other for several moments before I say, "Snow has to pay for what he's done. I wanna help the rebels in any way I can."
"It's hard to see Peeta this way," Coin says in an understanding tone.
"That's not Peeta," I say. The only thing that is keeping me calm about what I saw is convincing myself that that is not the boy I love. Wait, love? Do I love Peeta? I mentally shake my head. I can't afford to think about that right now.
"Send me to the Capitol. I'll do anything," I say.
"I can't," she says, but pauses as she's getting that second word out. She watches me for a few moment, then says, "I can't send you there. We can't get into The Capitol until we control District 2."
"Then send me to 2. You want me to fire up our troops? Call out to the loyalists? Finally show them the New Avengers? You've seen what I can do," I say.
Coin slowly nods. "Yes, I have," she says.
(Some time later)
I slowly make my way through the corridors of 13, following close behind Robert and Vision. They told me that they have someone they need to introduce to me before we head out to District 2.
"So, who are you introducing me to?" I ask.
"Well, when we get to 2, you'll be shooting a propo to finally introduce Panem to the New Avengers. Given that, I think it's finally time to introduce you to the one member of the New Avengers you haven't met yet," Robert says.
Only a few moments later, Robert throws open a set of doors, and we walk in. As we do, I stop short.
In the middle of the room, a group of about a dozen men wearing 13's combat uniforms are fighting hand to hand with a man dressed in some kind of black suit. As he turns to attack one of the men, I see his helmet, which looks catlike.
I watch in amazement as this black clad man fights off the 12 men around him, knocking them down with very nimble blows, twisting and flipping around them to avoid their blows, moving in a very cat like manner. The men of 13 don't even get the chance to lay a finger on him. In a matter of moments he's knocked them all down.
He stands there for a moment, then turns around. I finally get a good look at him. A tight fitting black suit that looks like it's partially inlaid with metal. A necklace of metal claws rests around his neck and shoulders. The mask, which I now get a better view of, is extremely cat like in shape and appearance, although with no mouth, and with white lenses over the eyes. I see what look like grooves along the suit glowing slightly purple. And, as I watch, the mask seems to disappear, revealing the face of a black skinned young man, who looks to be in his early 20s.
He slowly walks towards me. As he gets close, he stops, then starts looking me over. He slowly smiles and says, "The Mockingjay. A pleasure to meet you."
"Who are you?" I ask.
"Katniss, I'd like to introduce you to Flint. The Black Panther," he says.
I look at him in slight surprise. "You're the Black Panther," I say, more of a statement than a fact.
Flint smiles. "Yes. I am," he says. He pauses for a moment, then says, "You know, it is a pleasure to finally meet you. Especially given my brother once let you live."
"Your brother?" I ask.
"Yes. I'm from District 11. And my brother, my younger brother…was Thresh," he says.
I stare at him in surprise. "You're Thresh's brother?" I ask.
"Yeah. I'd left District 11 a little over a year before he got reaped. Apparently, Robert here had his eye on me. He approached me one day in secret and asked me to be the Black Panther. I agreed, and got smuggled out of 11 and was brought to 13. I've been training as the Black Panther ever since. But I saw Thresh's games," he says. He pauses, and then says, "And just so you know, I don't blame you for Thresh dying."
I slowly nod. "Thank you," I say.
Flint smiles. "Now, Mockingjay. Why don't we see how good you are?" he says.
My heart falls a bit, as I know I'm in for a beating.
(Late that night)
I sigh as I settle onto the hovercraft. It's not very comfortable, as I still have bruises from my sparring with Flint. I'm now convinced, besides Vision, FLint's the most dangerous member of the New Avengers.
As we begin to make our journey across Panem towards District 2, Gale comes and sits down next to me. We sit together for a few moments before Gale says, "I saw Peeta today."
"What did you think?" I ask.
"That I'll never have a chance if he doesn't get better. And that there's a chance we won't ever get Captain America," Gale says.
I just nod. Then, I ask, "Have you met Flint yet?"
"Yeah. He seems like a great guy. And his skills, plus that suit of his…he's gonna be a deadly addition to the team," Gale says.
I nod, and we sit in silence for a long time.
(The next morning)
I stand by the ramp, waiting for it to finally lower. As I feel the hovercraft touch down, and the ramp lowers, I make my way down it.
A soldier is waiting for us at the bottom. "I'm Corporal Holmes. Follow me," he says.
He leads our group down several streets until we arrive at the Justice Building. As we reach the building, Robert declares, "Here's perfect."
I know the plan. Robert wanted to film the first Avengers propo as soon as possible after arriving in 2. He shot small action scenes of each of us in uniform in 13, with each of us showing what we could do. Then, he wanted to shoot a few scenes here in 2 to add to the propo.
I move ahead of the rest of the group. I'm wearing my Mockingjay suit, with the bow of my ancestor clutched in one hand.
"Alright, Katniss. I want to shoot the first scene with just you right here in front of the Justice Building. Once we get that, we'll shoot the last scene with the whole team," Robert says.
I nod as I turn around in front of the steps leading up to the Justice Building. I look at my film crew, who is different for this shot, as Caster and Pollux are needed for the shot.
"Alright Katniss. We'll stay right here and start filming. You start talking whenever you're ready. And just say what comes from your heart," Robert says.
I nod, just waiting. I wait for almost a minute, just waiting for the words to come to me. Finally, I open my mouth.
"My name is Katniss Everdeen. I come to all of Panem from here in District 2. But, my goal in speaking to you today is not merely to give you news, or to tell you that I am alive. No, I come with a message. Not just for Panem, but for the entire world."
I pause for a moment, then say, "Centuries ago, before the disasters that brought this world to its knees and caused the disintegration of nations, from which Panem rose, there was an age of peace. And age of heroes. And during this time, Earth's mightiest heroes came together to defend this world from dangers that threatened it. They were known as the Avengers, the greatest and most powerful heroes the world has ever seen."
"As the world fell apart, so did the Avengers. For so long, the world has been without heroes. But now, I come before Panem and all the world to say that the age of heroes has come again, and that the Avengers have risen again!"
Robert smiles brightly at me, and gives me a thumbs up. He then shouts, "Alright. Everyone in position for the last shot."
Everyone gets into position, though at the moment, I'm the only one still in view of the camera. I wait as Robert looks through each of the cameras to make sure they have the right angle, then he gives me the thumbs up.
"To all of fighting for the freedom of Panem, I say now that you have Earth's mightiest heroes fighting on your side. And to all who are fighting for the Capitol, I come with a warning," I say.
Right then, Flint leaps down from the top of the Justice Building, somersaulting as he reaches the ground. He walks up behind me as there's a sound of engines and Pollux flies overhead, letting Finnick go. Finnick hits the ground and somersaults, getting back to his feet. Pollux then land behind me as Castor grows to full size next to him. Cressida then swings in on a rope web, fully decked out in her Spider Woman suit. Then, there's another roar, and Gale flies down, landing with a small crash right next to me, landing with one knee and one fist on the ground. He then stands up beside me.
"The New Avengers have risen. And we will not stop until this land is once again free!" I declare.
Robert looks like all of his dreams have come true. "And cut! Excellent job, everybody!" he shouts.
I turn around to my team. Cressida pulls off her mask as Castor's, Flint's, and Gale's masks retract.
"Good job everybody," I say. And everyone smiles.
(Hours later)
I watch as President Coin comes online through a video call. Lyme, the commander in District 2, had requested she be present by video call for this war council.
"President Coin, I thank you for the reinforcements and for the Mockingjay and her New Avengers. But, I'm not sure if anyone outside of 2 knows what we've been up against," Lyme says. She then points to a hologram before her as she says, "This is the Nut. The Capitol's headquarters of all offensive operations. It's manned by both military personnel and civilians from District 2. As you can see, the fortress lies so far beneath the bedrock, it's untouchable. Yesterday, we attempted to take the northeastern gate. The enemy countered from higher up, and we were forced to pull back. We took heavy losses."
"Could we launch a decoy. Send troops towards one gate, launch a staggered attack on another," one of the other commanders suggests.
"Whose troops do you propose as a decoy, Commander?" Commander Paylor asks.
"We have the Mockingjay. Don't underestimate her. And once we air the Avengers propo, it could sway many to surrender," Coin says.
"You've been underground a long time, Madam Coin. This isn't like the rest of Panem. Support for The Capitol runs deep here," Lyme says.
"Then there is no sacrifice too great. We need to control the arsenal inside that fortress. Even with every district in this alliance, we are outgunned," Coin says.
"I won't commit my people to a ground assault just to pillage weapons," Paylor says.
"Commander Paylor, your people have suffered nore than just about anyone else at the hands of The Capitol," Coin says.
"Which is why I won't condone a mass suicide," Paylor says.
"If we don't take District 2, we won't get into The Capitol," Coin says.
"Would it be enough to disable the fortress instead of taking it?" Gale asks.
"What do you have in mind?" Lyme asks.
"You think of it like a wolf den. You're not gonna fight your way in, so you've got two choices. You trap the wolves inside, or you flush 'em out. If we can't attack straight on, then couldn't we use our hovercraft to strike around it? We'll use the mountains. We'll hit the weak spots in the peaks," Gale explains.
"We could design the bomb targets in sequence using seismic data," Beetee adds.
"Trigger avalanches," Lyme catches on.
"Block all exits, cut off their supples. You make it impossible for them to launch their hovercraft," Gale says.
"Bury them alive," Paylor surmises the end goal.
"We'd forfeit any chance to control the weapons," Coin says.
"Yes, but we'd face a weakened Capitol," Beetee says.
"There's civilians in there. They should be given a chance to surrender. We could use one of the supply tunnels for the evacuees," Boggs says.
"It's a luxury we weren't given when they firebombed 12," Gale says.
"There's gotta be a better way," I say to Gale, horrified that he's actually thinking about this.
"I suggest we try the avalanche. However, I suggest we air the Avengers propo first, to demoralize the people in that mountain. Then, when we bomb the mountain, we leave the train tunnel alone. Civilians can escape into the square, where our armies will be waiting for their surrender," Coin suggests.
"We should have every available medic standing by," Paylor says.
"And if they won't surrender?" Lyme asks.
"Then we will need a compelling voice to persuade them," Coin says, causing everyone to glance at me. I just nod in response.
The council soon adjourns. Some commanders go with Beetee and Gale to prepare the plans for the air strike to disable the Nut. At the same time, I go with Robert, Vision, and the rest of the team to prepare for the airing of the propo.
Cressida and her film crew take about an hour editing the propo before sending it back to 13. Coin replies with a message saying that the propo will air in one hour.
An hour after getting that message, we are all glued around a projector, watching as Snow is broadcasting a message of hope to those still fighting for the Capitol. Suddenly, the messages cut out in static, and is replaced by an image of my mockingjay. Then, it's replaced by me in front of 2's Justice Building.
"My name is Katniss Everdeen. I come to all of Panem from here in District 2. But, my goal in speaking to you today is not merely to give you news, or to tell you that I am alive. No, I come with a message. Not just for Panem, but for the entire world."
"Centuries ago, before the disasters that brought this world to its knees and caused the disintegration of nations, from which Panem rose, there was an age of peace.
It then cuts away from me, and shows clips of each of us. Finnick twirling his trident in his hand. Cressida lowering from the ceiling on a web rope before letting go and flipping right side up. Castor shrinking down, then growing back to normal size. Pollux flying in and landing, his wings retracting into his pack. Flint, originally with his back to the camera, turning around, slightly crouched, and releasing his claws. Gale, in his suit, blasting his repulsors off screen before holding both his hands up so they are facing the camera, other weapons popping out of the suit. Then, at last, me turning to face the camera, drawing an arrow and fitting it to my box. I fire it, and as the arrow flies past the camera, it brings flames behind it that spread across the screen until they consume the screen. As it does, I kind of wish we'd included Vision, but at the same time, I recognize that keeping him secret gives us a huge advantage, as it doesn't give Snow any time to come up with possible counters for him like he'll have for the rest of us.
As the flames die down, it reveals me in front of the Justice Building again. Music begins to build up
"To all of fighting for the freedom of Panem, I say now that you have Earth's mightiest heroes fighting on your side. And to all who are fighting for the Capitol, I come with a warning." It then shows the rest of the team coming into the shot one by one, until all of are standing together. "The New Avengers have risen! And we will not stop until this land is free once again!"
It then cuts away, showing a few more shots of us, mostly just in training, but also showing footage of Gale flying alongside the hovercraft that brought the victors back from the Capitol. It then cuts away, showing an A with one leg longer than the other, inside a circle, as the music gets louder and stronger before the message finally cuts off.
I look around at the rest of the team. "Well. Cressida, you did a brilliant job putting that together," I say.
Cressida grins. "I think it'll do its job quite nicely," she says.
(That night)
I walk into the station where we're hoping that survivors will come. The bombing took place almost an hour ago, with Gale joining in as Iron Man. The two of us had had an argument before he took off about his attitude of not wanting to give anyone the chance to surrender, and we still hadn't spoken since he returned.
As we walk into the station, Boggs says, "Don't worry, Katniss. There'll be survivors."
"Alright, now let's focus on what you're gonna say. Now, Plutarch wrote a speech for you…" Haymitch begins to say.
"I'm not saying that," I say, not even caring to ask what Plutarch wrote.
"Okay, didn't think so," Haymitch says as he throws the card away, "Let's, uh…just remember, you're talking to everybody. Not just the rebels, but The Capitol. The survivors in 2. We want them to lay down their arms. So you might want to experiment with a little sensitivity, warmth."
"Make it quick. You're exposed," Boggs says. I just nod slightly as I move to take my position.
I stare at the train tunnel for a few moments, hoping that survivors will come, then turn around, and see Castor and Pollux ready to start filming me. Cressida gives me a countdown. Once she reaches zero, I take a deep breath, then say, "This is Katniss Everdeen, speaking to all of the loyalists from the ehart of District 2."
Right then, I hear a noise behind me, and a rebel soldier shouts, "Survivors! Inbound!" I turn around and see a train turning the corner towards the station.
Boggs hurries forward and pulls me back, saying, "We gotta get you back." He pulls me back towards the rest of the group as rebels are calling out to each other, telling everybody to get ready.
As I get back to the group, I see Castor has snapped his helmet back into place, as has Flint.
I watch as the train slowly pulls further into the station and finally stops. As soon as people begin to climb down from it, I hear the rebels shouting at the survivors to put their weapons down and to get on the ground.
One man, who looks wounded and is holding a pistol gets off the train and stumbles in our direction. Boggs raises his assault rifle, shouting at the man to drop the gun. He shouts at the man several times before I hear a gunshot in the background, followed by almost everybody ducking down and number of people screaming.
I race towards the man who was stumbling towards us, clearing seeing now that he's hurt, as I shout, "Stop! Stop!" I reach the man, then shout, "He needs help!"
Almost no sooner is the word out of my mouth than the man suddenly straightens up and puts the pistol to chin. Flint, who had been hurrying to follow me, stops and settles into a fighting stance, extending his claws. Boggs points his gun at the man and shouts, "Drop your weapon!"
All of this in the background to me, though. I just stare right into the eyes of the man in front of me. He stares right back into mine as he says, "Give me one reason I shouldn't shoot you right now."
I just look back at him for several moments before I say honestly, "I can't." Of course, the logical thing would be for him to pull the trigger, but he doesn't. He just looks back at me, slightly confused.
I continue to speak. "I guess that's the problem, isn't it? We blew up your mine. You burned my district to the ground. We have every reason to want to kill each other. So if you wanna kill me, do it. Make Snow happy. I'm tired of killing his slaves for him."
"I'm not his slave," the man says, but he doesn't lower the gun.
"I am. That's why I killed Cato. And he killed Thresh. And Thresh killed Clove. It just goes around and around. And who wins? Always Snow. I am done being a piece in his Games," I say, my anger slowly building up in my voice. I pause for a split second, then continue, "District 12, District 2. We have no fight. Except the one The Capitol gave us. Why are you fighting the rebels? You're neighbors. You're family."
This seems to strike a chord in the man, and he finally drops the gun. He and I continue to look each other in the eyes for several seconds before I slowly stand up and face the rest of the people. I look out over all of them before I shout, "These people are not your enemy! We all have one enemy, and that's Snow! He corrupts everyone and everything! He turns the best of us against each other. Stop killing for him! Tonight, turn your weapons to The Capitol. Turn your weapons to Snow!"
Right then, I see someone else in the crowd stand up, aim a gun at me, and fire. All I see is a flash of black as I feel myself yanked back. Then, I hit the ground, and my vision goes black.
And, I'll end there. Hope you didn't mind this being so long.
So, I hope you liked my introduction of the new Black Panther, as well as his identity. I honestly couldn't tell you how I came with the idea of him being Thresh's brother, but somehow I did, and I liked it. I hope you like the concept.
So, just for reference, here's the current roster of the New Avengers so far (by their codenames, not their real names): Mockingjay, Iron Man, Ant-Man, Falcon, Spider Woman, Neptune, Black Panther, and Vision.
Also, quick question. When Peeta finally receives the Super Soldier Serum and Cap's shield, should he be called Captain America, or Captain Panem? Please let me know in reviews.
Next chapter will be up soon. Until then, leave a review please, and stay tuned!
