Hey, everybody. Back with another chapter.
So, this one will cover the rest of the team before heading to the Capitol. It'll draw a lot more from the book than the movie, but will still be a fair bit different.
Let's get to it.
Chapter 15- A New Threat
I walk behind Gale into Command. The rest of the team, including Johanna, follow us in. None of us know exactly why we're here, except that Robert called for us all, and that it has to do with the impending attack on the Capitol.
As we enter, we see only Robert, Plutarch, and Coin waiting for us. As we walk in, Robert says, "Welcome, Avengers. Please. Have a seat."
We all take our seats around the table, wondering what this could be about. Once we're all seated, Coin speaks up.
"I am grateful to all of you for your efforts on behalf of the rebellion," she says. She then looks at me and says, "And especially to the Mockingjay. Now, I had intended to order you to remain here for the invasion, Miss Everdeen, and fly you out for the surrender. You've worked hard on our behalf, and I think you've well earned a rest. However, as it turns out, the situation has become more complicated."
I felt anger rising in me as Coin said she intended to keep me here. But, as she finishes, I feel concern replace it.
"What do you mean?" I ask.
Robert now leans forward. "We have a very highly placed agent inside the Capitol. I cannot say the person's name for security reasons. However, I will say that this person is among the inner circle. And, just a day ago, they contacted me through a secure transmission line. It turns out that President Snow has been getting ready for the Avengers. I'm not yet sure if he knew about the Avengers before our propo aired, or if he's just moved quickly. But, what we do know is that Snow has begun creating and training a team of supervillains to counter the Avengers," he says.
All of us are quiet for several moments before Gale says, "Are you kidding me?"
"No. I am not. Our contact even provided me with photos and footage to prove his claims. As of the moment, this team is comprised of 10 individuals. Apparently, among those who know of them, they're known as the Cabal. Some of them are essentially recreations of villains faced by the original Avengers, while some are completely new. In any case, they are all highly dangerous, and will pose a significant threat to the invasion if the Avengers are not there," Robert says.
Again, we're all quiet before Finnick asks, "So, what are we dealing with?"
Robert stands up and faces a display screen behind him, holding up a remote. He presses a remote, and images and footage of a man wearing some kind of suit that has a glowing whip of energy extending from each arm.
"This is Whiplash. The original Whiplash was an enemy of my ancestor, Tony Stark, who used the same arc reactor technology that powers the Iron Man suit to power his two energy whips, which can successfully cut through almost anything, and can even damage the Iron Man suit. I'm not yet sure if Snow's Whiplash's suit and whips are powered by an arc reactor, but they seem to have similar capabilities to that of the original Whiplash."
Robert presses a button on the remote, and another image comes up of some kind of beast that looks a little similar to the Hulk. A shiver runs down many of our spines.
"This is the Abomination, one of the arch enemies of the Hulk. The original Abomination was created when a man named Emil Blonsky attempted to gain the powers of the Hulk. However, the process didn't fully work, and instead turned him into the Abomination. While the Abomination is strong, and can be stronger than the Hulk depending on how angry the Hulk is, his strength does not increase with his anger like the Hulk's does. He also cannot return to human form. It seems that President Snow figured out how replicate the process, and has now created his own Abomination."
Robert hits the button again, changing the slides to images of a man dressed in some kind of suit, and with four massive mechanical limbs attached to his back.
"This is Doctor Octopus. The original Doctor Octopus was an enemy of Spider Man. He has no special powers himself, but the limbs that are attached his back are incredibly powerful, very difficult to damage, and give him the ability to perform many difficult tasks. They are also somewhat sentient, in that they can attack targets independently, and without even being prompted by Doctor Octopus. I have no doubt in my mind that the mechanical limbs of Snow's Doctor Octopus will be even more advanced."
Robert shifts the screen again, now revealing a man in some kind of large suit of red armor.
"This is the Crimson Dynamo. He seems to be Snow's attempt to create a villain capable of standing up to the Iron Man suit. The Crimson Dynamo armor is not as sleek as Gale's suit, nor is it as nimble or agile. It is also not quite as tough as the Iron Man suit. However, it is highly weaponized, so it is still highly dangerous."
Robert shifts the screen again. Now, a man dressed in heavy combat gear and body armor, with a mask painted white to resemble a skull.
"This is Crossbones. The original Crossbones was an enemy of Captain America. Originally, he was a commando soldier of HYDRA. However, at some point, he became a mercenary and forged the identity of Crossbones. He wore a heavy suit and body armor, and was incredibly skilled with any weapon and at hand to hand combat, even capable of holding his own for a while against Captain America. The evidence shows that Crossbones was the first of the Cabal, and has been training for a while."
He shifts the screen again, and an image of a man wreathed in lightning appears.
"This is Electro. He was subjected to experiments that enable him to discharge powerful bolts of electricity from his body, as well as to absorb electricity to power himself up. He will be highly dangerous."
He shifts the screen again, and images and footage come up of a man dressed in a black suit and hood, with a skull and crossbones on his chest, and wielding a massive scythe on one arm.
"This is the Grim Reaper. He was a very strong man and excellent fighter before he was turned into the Grim Reaper. While he has no power, his scythe possesses many powers. It can spin at incredible speeds, cut through most things, discharge electromagnetic blasts or gas pellets, shock anything it touches, and even has guns fitted inside this part here that attaches to his arm. While he is extremely dangerous, if you can manage to destroy the scythe or remove it from his arm, he'll be virtually defenseless."
He shifts the screen again, and a man in some kind of exosuit with frost around his hands appears.
"This is Blizzard. Now, Blizzard has no powers. Instead, he uses that suit to project blasts of ice at his opponents. The suit is based on technology that the Capitol has been working on for years. The temperatures of the ice produced by the suit can get around 100 degrees below zero. If that ice touches bare skin, it can cause irrepairable frostbite in just a few seconds."
Robert shifts the screen again, and an image of a very feral looking man comes up. He almost looks half animal.
"This is Sabretooth. The original Sabretooth was the archenemy of Wolverine. He was a mutant who had a healing power, though not as effective as Wolverine's. He also developed claws and fangs and other animalistic features. These, as well as his ferocity and complete lack of humanity, gave him the nickname Sabretooth. Snow seems to have figured out how to replicate the mutation. From the footage we've seen, this Sabretooth seems just as inhumane and savage as the original Sabretooth," he says.
He then shifts the screen again, and an image of a man dressed in some kind of blue combat suit, with white gloves and boots, a white hood, an orange cape, and a skull mask. He's carrying a shield that's colored with a white outer ring and blue interior, with an orange T painted in the middle of the blue. He's armed with a sword, knives, pistols, and a bow and arrow.
"This is Taskmaster. The original Taskmaster was a complicated individual who came into conflict with many people, but most notably the original Black Widow. He was enhanced by a serum that not only enhanced his strength and reflexes, but also gave him the unique ability that became known as photographic reflexes. This enabled him to perfectly replicate any physical action he saw. This could be used from anything perfectly learning a piano piece after seeing it played to a far more dangerous ability of being capable of perfectly copying someone's fighting style. It was this that made him so dangerous, as he could perfectly replicate his opponent's fighting style, or even copy a fighting style he had previously seen that he knew his opponents would be weak to. The serum had several small drawbacks, but it turned Taskmaster into a deadly opponent. Snow has managed to recreate the serum and create a new Taskmaster."
Robert looks at all of us as he slowly sets the remote down. "These are the 10 people you will have to fight in The Capitol. It is imperative that you all train extensively over the next week and a half. In ten days, you will be sent to the Capitol to aid our troops and bring down the Cabal. You must prepare to face them," he says.
We're all quiet for several moments. Then, I say, "Then we'll prepare. Whatever it takes to stop Snow."
(Some time later)
I duck to avoid a repulsor blast from Gale, then fire an explosive arrow at him, knocking him back.
We've been training for several hours since we met with Robert, Coin, and Plutarch. And I can definitely say we've never trained so intensively. It's also the first time we've trained as an entire team, and the first time we've seen Johanna as She-Hulk. I will say, Robert had the right idea asking her. She seems like she was born for it.
Gale fires another repulsor blast at me, but I duck and roll to avoid. Flint then leaps out of nowhere and tackles Gale out of the sky.
As I watch Gale and Flint exchange blows, I smile. Try as they might, Snow and his Cabal cannot stop us.
And, I'll go ahead and end there. Hope you liked this chapter.
So, Snow's Cabal has ten members. I won't be doing the battles individually. With one or two, I might, but for the most part, the Cabal will be facing the New Avengers in either pairs or trios.
Next chapter will be up soon. Until it is, please leave a review, and stay tuned!
