In celebration of the possible revival of White Collar!
It's been 6 years; Neal has been doing great in 1st grade and his wife's work was growing. He was happy he had stayed in New York after getting the job offer in Washington. He was in the dining room table eating his breakfast and drinking his coffee while looking at the newspaper. His phone started ringing.
"This is Peter Burke" he said
"Hello Mr. Burke, I'm Cindy" the female voice said on the other line. "I'm June Ellington's granddaughter, we met before" she added.
"Oh yes! I remember, how are you? Is everything ok?" Peter asked as he placed down his coffee cup.
Elizabeth was coming down the stairs with Neal holding her hand getting him ready for breakfast.
"I'm ok, I just wanted to let you know, my grandmother passed away last night. We are going to hold a small gathering and I would like for you to be there. She spoke so much of you after… well Neal left" she said.
Peter nodded "Of course, I would like to be there, June was an amazing woman, and me and my wife will be there" he said.
"I will send you the details, thank you so much Mr. Burke" Cindy said
"Please just, call me Peter" he said "I will see you soon, I am sorry for your loss" he added.
"Thank you" she said and the call ended.
"Honey what happened?" Elizabeth said as she placed Neal on the seat.
"June Ellington" Peter said
"I haven't heard from her in years" El said
"She passed away last night, that was his granddaughter Cindy" he said and sighed. "She would like for us to go to the ceremony"
"Of course," She said
The ceremony was in June's home, the furniture had been moved around and a lot of people were there visiting. Peter and Elizabeth brought young Neal with them and were showing his around. They got Cindy to meet their son and she took to him quickly. She knew why he was named Neal and she looked at Peter for a second. "You know, grams never let anyone go up to his place" she said. "I mean we would go there to reminisce and the view of course" she smiled.
Peter smiled "June would do that, she loved Neal" he said "I feel so bad for not visiting her, but…"
Cindy smiled "She understood" she said
Peter would not tell her that he knew that Neal was alive, after discovering the 701 key and the evidence that Neal set up his demise.
Cindy looked at him "I think you should visit his studio" she said "The door is open" she said as she placed a hand over young Neal's hair.
Elizabeth smiled as she continues to talk to Cindy.
Peter looked up the stairs and decided to do just that. He opened the door to the studio and looked around, everything looked the same, everything looked exactly how Neal would have left it. He took a few steps and looked around; he saw someone standing at the balcony admiring the view. Peter held his breath, the suit, the stance. He looked away for a second, he could swear he is seeing Neal Caffrey there.
"Hello Peter" the man said as he turned around and smiled. Bright blue eyes were looking at the FBI Agent as the younger man walked inside the studio.
"Ne… Neal" Peter said as he looked at his ex-CI. He was fighting the tears that were threatening to appear.
Neal smiled at Peter as he looked at his ex-handler up and down. "You look good" he said.
"And you look very much alive" Peter said with a smile as he closed the gap between them and hugged Neal.
The conman accepted the hug with a smile "I know that you know I was alive" he said
"Yeah well, after that stunt, I was just glad you were safe" Peter said. "And we had a contract, the FBI was going to release you once you brought down the Pink Panthers." He said.
"I… wasn't sure if the FBI was going to keep that" Neal said.
"They probably wanted to find a loophole. But I did file the contract that was signed and sealed by the district attorney." Peter shrugged "I also kept a copy with your things" he added.
"Were you hoping I would come back?" Neal asked.
Peter looked at him in the eyes and nodded "Yeah… I did" he said.
Neal was surprised by how sincere Peter was in that small statement and smiled. "I've been gone for 6 years what have I missed?" he asked as he sat down.
Peter sighed as he sat at the other side of the table. "Diana took a position in DC, she comes by from time to time. Little Theo is already in 2nd Grade, he and Neal are good friends" he added.
Neal looked at Peter with a weird look. "Wait…"
Peter smiled and nodded "Neal Burke, you should meet him, his downstairs" he added.
"Peter I'm… flattered" Neal added.
Peter shook his head "Don't let it get to your head. Besides… it was fitting." he said
Neal smiled "How's Elizabeth?"
"She's good, her business is growing every year. She moved to a bigger office" he added. "Jones is still with us; he's taking charge of the bigger cases" he said. "He got married to a woman he met at one of his cases. She was the assistant to a CEO that was using an offshore account to bankrupt the company and he was planning on leaving the employees with nothing." He added, he was smiling and somehow while looking at Neal he asked, "Are you staying?"
Neal looked at him a little surprised, but nodded a little "Do you want me to?" he asked
Peter could see that Neal was doing great, he did not know what would happen if Neal Caffrey appeared in the picture again. He sure was going to work so the FBI did not get him locked up. He stood up and placed a h and on Neal's shoulder and looked down to him. "I would love for you to stay in our lives" he said.
Neal looked up to Peter and stood up with a sigh. "There's the matter that I died though" he said.
"Oh yeah, I know" Peter nodded "I could try and work something out, but if you come back. Would you like to actually be a consultant for the FBI?" he asked
Neal frowned as he looked at Peter "Are you offering me a job at the White Collar division?" he asked.
"Maybe, if I get Neal Caffrey back from the dead" he said.
"Hon they told me you were here" El's voice was heard from the door as she was guiding little Neal. She looked up and gasped.
"Elizabeth" Neal called to her with a smile. He saw the 6-year-old child holding her hand and looked at Peter for a second.
"Neal!" El said as she went to the man and hugged him.
Peter went and carried little Neal and got close to the hugging pair. "So now you can meet finally" Peter said.
Neal smiled at Elizabeth and his eyes went to the child "And this is Neal Burke huh" he said with a smirk. "Name suits him perfectly" he said
Little Neal was looking at the older Neal with curiosity.
"Neal, this is your dad's friend Neal" Peter said.
"How! And why?" El was trying to ask many questions that were forming in her head.
Neal looked at her "It's a long story. And… somehow it felt right for me to come back now" Neal explained.
