CHAPTER 3
Kohaku continues to avoid Rin. He later found out that his father's company was in greater debt than he could have imagined. It appeared that his father had owed a great amount of money from the Taisho Bank. Kohaku had to come up with half the money to pay them or he would lose the company.
"How can father owe so much money to them?" Kohaku asked at a meeting.
"The company was in need of improvement so your father seeks the Taisho Bank for money." Said Naraku. Naraku was one of the executives for the company. "Two years ago, the stock went down and had never come back up." He said sadly.
Kohaku carried a deep frown on his face. He lets out a deep breath and turns to Naraku. "How much time do we have?"
"Three weeks."
"Not enough times for us to even pay a third of the money owed." He said in frustration. "All right, I will have to think about this. You all may go, except for Naraku." After everyone left, Kohaku turned to Naraku. "Is there a way we can ask them to give us more time?"
"I don't think there is." He said with disappointment. "They were nice enough to let us off this long." They are both silent as if trying to come up with an idea. "Maybe you can try talking to them." Kohaku raised his eyes. "I heard the owner of the Taisho Bank will be at the social gathering this weekend. You can try talking to him and see if they will give us more time to come up with the money."
"I wasn't planning on going." Kohaku said dryly, remembering he has to take Rin with him if he goes.
"You should go. This is important and it may be the only chance to save the company." Kohaku thought about it for a moment and knows that Naraku was right. He will do anything to save his family's company.
Rin was in her room doing her homework when Kohaku knocked on her door. It was late and Rin wonders who it could be. When she opened the door, she was surprised to see Kohaku standing there before her. He had an annoying look on his face.
"I need to talk to you." He said.
Rin frowned in confusion, but said, "I'll meet you downstairs." Kohaku turned and walked away without waiting for her or letting her finish.
Kohaku was waiting for her in the living room. Rin approached him and sat down in a chair next to him. "What do you want to talk about?" She said with a straight face.
He glared at her. "I want you to attend the social gathering with me this weekend." Rin raised her eyebrow in surprise.
"I assumed Miss Kanna can't make it?" She asked, being sarcastic.
He sent her a dark look. "I preferred to take her. But I don't have any choice." He said dryly. Rin was hurt at his remarks.
"Why don't you? After all, we are married in name only and you have been going out with her." She said bitterly. "What difference will this make?"
He stood up abruptly. "If I have a choice, I will never ask you." He said coldly. "You will go with me whether you like it or not. It is this weekend so be ready by seven." He said and stormed off. He did not give Rin any chance to argue.
Rin stood there in anger for a moment. Who does he think he is? She sighed angrily and went up to her room.
The weekend came quickly. Rin barely had time to pick out her dress. Kohaku pulled up his car at the front of the house and walked into the house.
"Tell Rin to get down here." He said to one of the servants. The servant quickly went up the stairs to get Rin.
Kohaku waited impatiently by the stairs for Rin. He had his back to the stairs when Rin came down. She stood a couple steps from him. "I am ready to go." She said from behind.
Kohaku swirled around to face her. His stomach dropped. He didn't expect her to be beautiful and desirable. His heart was racing. He struggled to regain his composure. "Er, let's go." He said, clearing his throat.
Rin walked toward the car with Kohaku close behind. He opened the door for her and got on the other side of the car. The drive to the party was a very silent one.
"I surely hope you won't give me the cold shoulder when we get to the party." He said breaking the silent.
"I didn't know I was giving you one." She said without looking at him. Kohaku's face flashed with anger.
"This is harder on me than you. So try to make us look like a happy married couple."
"Aren't we?" She turned to him with a smile, but turned away again rolling her eyes.
Kohaku fought to stay cool and not start any fight with her. He pulled up in front of the building and turned to her. "Remember what I said." He said and stepped out.
"Remember what I said. Remember what I said." She repeats making facial expressions. "Like hell I will." She said angrily and stepped out with a fake smile. She took Kohaku's arm and walked in together.
The party was crowded with people. She felt out of place. She did not know anyone there. Kohaku took her to their table and left her there alone. She didn't know what to do except sat there and stared at the table feeling embarrassed.
Later during the night, many people were introducing themselves to her and most of them were men. They asked her to dance with them but she declined each time. Kohaku was at the other side of the room watching her and did not like how much Rin was getting the attention. He made his way to her.
He leaned forward next to her ear and said, "Looks like you are the center of the attention, dear wife." He said it loud enough for everyone to hear.
"You have a very smart and beautiful wife there, Mr. Taijima." Said a young man sitting across from Rin.
He did not say anything and took a seat next to her.
Rin was very confused at Kohaku's sudden change of attitude. For the rest of the night Kohaku was by her side. After the party, they drove home silently. When they got home, Rin stepped out of the car and went straight to her room.
She slumped down on her bed. She had tried being nice to Kohaku but nothing she does could change the fact that he hated her. She wanted him to say something to her. At least a goodnight, but he completely ignored her during the drive back to their house.
Kohaku stopped in front of Rin's room unable to decide whether he should say thank you or not. He raised his hand to knock, but decided not to and walked to his room.
