Percy POV
As soon as I saw that the battle was over, I rushed to find Lady Hestia and let her know. She seemed pleased and quickly transported me back to my room in the big house. Instantly I left the room and set off trying to find Nico.
I hated watching the battle knowing that they were all out there, risking their lives to stop the titans and all I could do was watch. I'd looked over many people in the battle and seen far too many of them fall to the monsters, but my focus had mainly been on the son of Hades. By the end he had seemed to be ok but I knew that he had taken quite a beating out there and was likely to be in much worse shape than he was letting people know.
I darted around camp, desperately trying to find Nico. I looked everywhere, but my panic only grew as I began to run out of places to look and neared the infirmary. 'He'll be ok' I kept telling myself, but I knew I wouldn't believe it until I saw him.
A few people shouted to me as I ran past, seeing me for the first time, but I didn't stop to listen the only place left to look was the infirmary and I had to know that Nico was ok.
The sight when I entered the infirmary made me stop dead in my tracks. Every bed was taken, people were sat in chairs and some were even on blankets on the floor – so many people were injured. The room buzzed with noise as the medics shouted to each other and got healthy campers to bring them supplies. The whole room was covered in the metallic scent of blood. I couldn't take it, my head started to spin the only time I had ever been around so much blood was when Kronos...
"Percy?" a hand landed on my shoulder, drawing me back to the present. "Are you ok you look a little pale?" I tried to cover up my flinch as I turned to look at Jason. "Ye - yeah I'm fine." I lied "Where's Nico?" The son of Jupiter looked at me curiously, clearly not believing my lies, but despite this he gestured and led me towards the end of the room.
"Come on, I'm fine just let me leave there are more important people here than me." I heard him before I saw him. Nico was at the back of the room sat on a chair with a medic examining a nasty cut on his leg. "If you just shut up for a minute and stop whining, I can get this done and go and see to someone else." The daughter of Apollo scolded Nico. I had to stifle a laugh as I saw the pouty look on his face.
"Hey, Cod Lip" Jason called to Nico when we were close enough "you've got a visitor." With that my friend gave me one last look and went off to continue helping people. "Percy!" Nico beamed. "I didn't expect you to be back so soon."
"Yeah, well I needed to see how everyone was doing. This w-was my home too." I told him and I walked the rest of the distance and leaned against his chair. "Is." he corrected me with a stern look. I simply held my hands up in mock surrender and turned to look at the wound on his leg.
"What did you do?"
"It was right at the end; a hell hound was about to get one of the Demeter campers, so I pushed her out of the way while Danny from Ares took it down. It managed to get a good swipe on me though." Nico explained, hissing in pain as the medic poked at his leg. "This is going to need stitches," she informed him "it'll leave a scar for sure."
"Great, another one for my collection." Nico muttered sarcastically.
As she was about to leave, I said "Wait, can, can I try something first?" Confused, she gestured for me to go ahead. I knelt down on the floor by his leg and closed my eyes, concentrating. In the next few seconds I held my hand out and water began to condense, swirling around it. When I deemed that I had enough I opened my eyes and hovered my hand over the wound – directing the water into it. It took a while, longer than I would have liked but I kept going, I pictured the muscle and skin knitting back together and slowly it did.
"How did you do that?" The daughter of Apollo breathed. "I I've always been able to heal myself but in the last 10 years Kro," a took a deep breath "I was taught how to heal others." Hesitantly Nico set his foot on the floor and I helped him to his feet. After a few experimental steps he turned around beaming. "Percy, this is amazing! I can barely feel any pain!"
I smiled at him as he walked back to me. "I know it's a lot to ask," the medic started "but do you think you could help some other people?"
"Cindy, it clearly took a lot out of him he can't..." Nico started but I gestured for him to stop. "Nico, Nico is right, h-healing take a lot out of me. But if I can have a, a bucket of water I'll heal as many people as I can."
Within a minute I had been given a bucket and Nico and I were being taken around the infirmary for me to heal the people that the medics would struggle with the most. Each one of them was amazed and thanked me for helping them but it turned out I could only heal eight before Nico called time.
"Ok, that's enough. Percy you are about to pass out, I know you want to help people but don't hurt yourself." He told me in a stern voice. Tiredly I agreed with him and he gave the remaining water back before helping me out of the infirmary.
I'd like to say that he didn't have to help me that much, but I was dazed and leaning on him quite heavily as he led me away from the building. "Come on, this way." he said changing my direction away from the big house. "I know what you need." I was too out of it to pay much attention to where we were going but within a few minutes I felt water lap against my feet and some of my strength returned to me as Nico sat us on the beach.
"Thanks, Neeks." I breathed out as I laid down on the sand to stare at the sky. I could feel my strength returning to me thanks to the salt water, but I knew it would still take a while. "Any time Percy." Nico replied, from where he was sat by my head, keeping out of the water.
"Y-you worried me." I told him. "I hated only being able to watch while you all risked your lives, I felt so useless. And, and then to come back and you were in the infirmary."
"Hey, shush. You know what would have happened if you were here and look, I'm fine." he said shaking to show me he was ok. I laughed and propped myself up on my elbows. "Yeah, ok, I suppose. But I can't help thinking how useless I've been." I sighed. "You saved me, and I've done nothing to repay you."
"Perce, I don't expect anything." He looked me right in the eye. "And neither does anyone else, we came to rescue you because you're our friend. Nothing more. So, promise me you'll drop this." I looked into his eyes trying to find the lie in his words, but I couldn't, he seemed so sincere. "Ok, ok, I'll not bring it up again."
Finally happy with it Nico flopped back onto the sand and we laid there for a while, talking about the little things. Trying to avoid thinking that there had just been the first battle of a war and I was once again in the middle of it. I could hear other people on the beach, they were doing the same as us, but I didn't mind – they didn't bother me, I knew Nico wouldn't let anything happen.
Just as the sun was setting there was a cough from behind us. We both sat up and looked at the person. Leo. "Hey guys, there's a meeting up at the big house. You're needed Nico. Percy you are welcome to come too." the Latino boy announced. "But you don't have to." he hurriedly added on the end. "No, no. I want to." I told my former friend, standing up and offering Nico my hand to pull him up.
The three of us hurried to the big house, Leo and Nico talking while I listened. When we got there, we went into the war room and Nico grabbed me a spare chair and put it next to his own. I smiled at him as we settled in and waited for the last few people to arrive.
It was strange being in a meeting again. I remembered back when we were fighting the first titan war and we mainly spent out meetings with Clarisse yelling, the Stolls pulling pranks and most people not contributing. Back then we were young and naïve, camp had never seen war. But now the counsellors were all waiting, some discussing events and plans in hushed voices while others simply sat in silence. Waiting. The atmosphere was much more tense than it had ever been.
When everyone had filed in Chiron spoke. "Campers, I know today has been hard on all of you, but we have a few more things to discuss before you can go and unwind." He paused and looked around the room. "Can all new counsellors please stand up and introduce yourselves."
Four people stood and in turn they said their name and their cabin. "Haley, Demeter.", "Joseph, Morpheus.", "Damon, Ares." and "Callie, Hecate.". When they were done, a moment of silence passed as everyone remembered the fallen counsellors.
Chiron cleared his throat "Ok, Ethan can you give us the casualty report please?" Slowly the head of the Asclepius cabin stood. I could feel the tension in the air, I could almost taste it. "Well, um. We have a total of 106 dead." Ethan looked at the table as he spoke, his voice thick. "30 campers, 26 legionaries and 50 citizens combined from New Olympus and New Rome." He quickly sat, still looking at the wooden table.
The rest of the meeting passed in a blur, I was aware as they discussed the new watch system and the new camp timetable for training. All extra-curricular / non-vital activities had been cut, and weapons training had been doubled. The immortal campers were to oversee the training, meaning they would have very little free time.
We were also told that the funerals for the campers would be held tomorrow night.
With that we left, I went back to my room with Nico but our happy mood from earlier had gone and a somber one had replaced it. It was clear that the son of Hades was exhausted from the day and he left after only a few hours to go to bed, leaving me alone with my thoughts.
And one thing was very clear to me.
This war was my fault.
