Title: The House of Blue
Summary: He knew something was distracting her, she wasn't her usually, in the game self and over a morning coffee he was about to find out why. Erin/Anthony friendship piece set after season 10 finale.
Disclaimer: Everything from Blue Bloods belongs to CBS and well not me lol I only own my muse (Alice love her!) and the ideas and any OCs that might pop up (which in name are only coincidence if they match anyone reading and not intentional!)
A/N: okay so I normally Danny/Maria pairing but I so love the Erin/Anthony friendship/partnership and that she said he was her family too and this idea just wouldn't leave me and I hope whoever reads it likes it a little. Thanks!
It wasn't exactly the news she had expected to hear when her father had asked all the siblings plus Sean, to gather at the house one night after work.
She sat at her desk, deep in thought as her mind replayed her father's words over and over….
'Okay…Joe fathered a son he never knew about…'
That was it. No lead up. No warning. No softening the blow. Just…the facts. Reagan style. They all knew it, she knew it well, she had learnt it from him but to hear the heavy emotion in her father's voice as he told them simply and to the point – that there was another member to their family hit them all like a ton of bricks.
Silence reigned supreme for a few seconds as each of them just stared at Frank in dumbfounded disbelief before Henry spoke up first, an exclamation of shock.
'Wow, I did not see that one coming,' Sean piped up.
'Nor I,' Frank agreed heavily.
'We don't know something about this…do you…know something about this?' Danny turned to Sean to ask.
'Yeah it started with my family ancestry project for school…' Sean was quick to explain.
'Detective Joe Hill of the Firearms Investigation unit.'
'The NYPD Firearms unit?' Jamie inquired.
'I just met the guy…he's my grandson. He carries himself…kinda like…Danny…' Frank stammered in shock.
'I'm just blown away…' Erin chimed in as the rest of the family bombarded Frank with questions and suggestions about inviting him to family dinner and what he's like and how much like Joe he's really like.
'I think we should meet him together.'
It was her suggestion and when she first uttered it, she figured that her father would invite Joe Hill and his mother to family dinner, since they were part of the family now and that would be that. However, her father had later told them that Joe Hill's mother was actually very angry that Frank wanted to integrate her son into the Reagan clan when she was trying to do what she could to get him removed. Or at least as much as she could.
The plan backfired, thanks in part to Sean and his persistence, and the fact that Joe wanted to meet his new, extended family. There was blue in his veins…Reagan blue and he wanted to get to know that and become a part of it.
The evening had gone smoothly but as she sits here now, Tuesday morning, she can't help but wonder how this will all play out in the long run. She was so distracted with the new family developments that she didn't hear Anthony enter the room; her eyes not even darting toward the file on her table.
"Good morning to you too."
"Yeah," she simple muttered but remained in her trance like condition.
"So we have the name of our perp."
"That's nice."
"Yeah it's Rob Lowe. He gave up acting and decided to take up a life of crime."
"That's nice," she echoed mechanically, not even noticing her favorite coffee now on her desk beside the file.
"What's with you?" Anthony pressed a bit harder, instantly snapping Erin from her mental stupor.
"What?"
"I said…we have the name of our perp. You okay?"
"Yes…I'm fine."
"It wouldn't take a very skilled detective to know when you're hiding something. Me knowing you and being skilled," Anthony paused with a chuckle, which made her offer him a small smile. "What's going on? Everything okay?"
Her brow gently creased as she leaned back in her chair and stared at the small curls of steam that danced around the edge of the coffee cup. "So we…"
"Yeah we…who's we?" Anthony countered which brought a small twist to her lips. "New man?"
"Joe had a son…"
"Joe as in…." Anthony started on shock as Erin slowly nodded.
"And we just met him on Friday."
"Oh boy."
"Exactly," she replied pointedly.
"Well that explains the distraction yesterday."
"Dad had told us that his mother had come forward and told him."
"Wow…that musta been a shock."
"Yeah it was. When dad first told us, I don't think it really sunk in. and then…he was out there that whole time. We missed so much. He missed so much."
"Joe huh. So…what's he like?"
"He's like…he's like Joe," she stated proudly. "Proud to be a cop; prouder still to be connected to a family of cops."
"Guess the house of blue has gotten bigger."
"Funny," Erin deadpanned. "He's about 24. So about Nikki's age. She was shocked and will use some vacation time to come out for the next long weekend and meet him."
"Sounds like it went well," Anthony stated with a smile.
"It was but now I worry."
"You, worry? Never," he teased as her lips pursed. "What are you worried about?"
"One more of us for dad to worry about," she uttered with a small huff as she finally took a sip of her coffee and then offered her Detective a small smile. "It's good, my favorite."
"I know. Family, remember?"
"Yes you are," Erin nodded and smiled as she recalled the words she had said to him the previous week, 'you're my family too.'
"We all liked him from the start. He just seemed…to fit. Talking shop, laughing and offering jokes and just…taking it all in. He just seemed to fit at the table and it was like…"
"Your brother was back."
"Yeah…just like that," she admitted with a firm nod. "Brought back bitter emotions but we all had made a pact to not dwell on it. Dad said that Joe knew about how J…his father died and never pressed for details. I'm sure he's read the file; why dwell on the past, right? Brings up too many painful 'what if' memories and we stopped playing that game long ago."
"So…is he going to be a permanent fixture at family dinners?"
"He's been offered the invitation and now…now it's up to him."
"How come I've never been invited to family dinners?" Anthony chuckled.
"They couldn't handle it," Erin retorted as looked down at the file. "Now…let's see who we're up against." She flipped open the file and tried to listen to what new details, their case at hand presented itself to them, but inside she couldn't help but think on her new nephew. Would he come to dinner again? What new details would they learn about his life? What changes would he bring to theirs? The house of blue was about to get bigger but inside she knew they were ready. Come what may they were Reagan's.
THE END.
A/N: I hope if you read this you liked it a little and please do review before you go and thanks so much! I am sooooo excited for season 11 and to see more about Joe and of course more Erin/Anthony friendship/partnership goodness.
