Excerpt 003

Something in his gaze held her attention. She cocked her head to the side, her brows furrowing in concentration. She licked her lips, unsure of whether or not to say something. "Sesshomaru...?" She called, his name a soft whisper on her lips.

He turned fully to her. She saw the blood that painted his fingers and part of his clothing and armor. She saw the near-blank expression he gave her - as if he, himself, were trying to block painful memories from resurfacing. "What happened?" Almost immediately, she bit her lip. She shouldn't have questioned him. She should have just turned away and gone back to her comrades. Regret filled her being, but she pressed forward. She had gone this far already.

"Rin..." He said to her, and she glanced back and forth, between his hand and his face. And she was able to put two and two together. Tears, now glistening in her eyes, she dropped her open umbrella and allowed it to fall at her feet behind her. Her hands fell to her sides as her face began to contort into sadness. "A burial will be held come first light... I wish for you to put her spirit to rest."

With tears now cascading down her face, and her silent sobs making her body shake, she nodded in comprehension. She reached forward, placing both of her hands over his, and guided him toward the river she knew to be nearby.

He considered tearing his hand from her gentle grasp. Considered beheading her for her forward motions. Snapping her neck for the audacity and utter boldness she had to place a hand upon his person. Instead, he allowed himself to be guided through the darkened forest.

The umbrella was left in the open field to collect the rain the drizzled down as they disappeared beyond the brush.
