This chapter is centred on Towa the new character introduced in an announcement about Inuyasha finally get a sequel. She's a Hanyou so I hope the Rin-haters will now FINALLY shut up.
On a quiet day, a loud cry thundered through Castle in the Sky suddenly
"Baba~!"
"Baba~! Where are you?! You promised you'd help me with Kanji today! Baba-sama!"
A beautiful, slender woman with pale skin, slanted golden eyes with slit pupils, and long silver hair done in two tails looked up from her flower arrangement. A soft sigh escaped her as she motioned for her servants to take away the vase and the flowers.
"BABA~~!" Echoed louder closer than ever as the pattering of feet reached her sensitive ears. Gracefully getting to her feet the woman walked to her door and opened it just as a thirteen-year-old girl came racing down the hall still shouting at the top of her lungs.
The woman pinched her nose and sighed again, before counting to three. Sure enough, the girl tackled her to a big bear hug. The hyperactive girl proceeded to squeeze the woman and excitedly babble on about learning calligraphy with her grandmother. The woman sighed again.
"Towa, you need to calm down, Calligraphy is a skill that requires patience and concentration"
"Baba! I'm so excited, I've never had the chance to write Kanji as art before back in the other world, kanji was part of everyday life and only a select few can write those big beautiful words on red paper or sell them, and oh Baba it always looked so elegant and oh Baba…" The woman suppressed another sigh as she watched her granddaughter dance and prance around her in excitement. Evidently those of the other world had no sense of decorum.
"Towa, this one recalls telling you that the proper term when addressing this one is "Baba-sama", not "Baba" it is highly improper for a young lady of your status to talk in such a common way"
"Yes, Baba-sama" But the woman knew in a matter of minutes Towa would go back to addressing her in a common way. No matter how hard she tried the girl would not learn how to act and talk according to her status.
"Come along Towa, we shall go to my study." The woman walked down the hall to a large room where there a fireplace burned and a low desk. On the desk, a large sheet of calligraphy paper was already spread and there were brushes ready.
"Now, Towa…" A pause "Towa a proper lady does not just sit down and cross her legs…kneel properly" Another pause "Young Lady do not slump your shoulders or hunch your back"
"But Baba, it hurts to kneel for so long and my back feels stiff keeping ramrod straight for hours."
"Young Lady this is just how things are done. Furthermore hunching your back is bad for your health, and makes you look weak" The girl got into a proper kneeling position and smoothing her kimono sat perfectly straight chin slightly raised looking like a proper young lady for about two seconds. It would have lasted long her long sleeves dragged through the ink as she dipped her brush.
"My dear, when you write calligraphy, you have to slightly roll your sleeve back, and hold your sleeve back with your non-writing hand" The woman's face turned scandalous as the girl pushed her sleeve back beyond her elbows and folded it many times so it stayed in place. Then as she grabbed her brush and stuck out her tongue in concentration trying to imitate her teacher's elegant brush strokes.
"Young Lady, we do not push our sleeves back so much!"
"What's wrong with this Baba, girls from the other world, and down in the villages do it all the time!"
"Towa, you are not like those village girls, you are a proper Lady of nobility, you must learn to have some decorum and sophistication. Pushing your sleeves all the way back is not appropriate for a young lady of your status"
Towa grumbled as she arranged her sleeves into the same style as her grandmother, feeling stupid and out of place. Her back ached from being so straight, her feet and knees ached from kneeling. And she was only halfway through the poem-phrase her grandmother had chosen for this session.
Towa liked spending time with her family getting to know them and making up for the time she missed, but she always felt so stifled. The girl sighed as she watched Ah-Un fly around in the garden before her. So free and happy. A roar sounded, leaves, and petals fluttered as the dragon fled the stable-boys trying to lead him away. He was not fond of being confined to a small dark space.
"That dragon," her grandmother grumbled quietly, greatly displeased by the ruckus he was causing and Towa laughed out loud. The stable-boys looked so silly, some flying after the dragon others running after him. Round and round they went. It was much better than sitting learning Calligraphy, getting etiquette and decorum lessons thrown in at the same time. Calligraphy used to be fun, she used to love watching the old folk gather at Higurashi Shrine a few times a month to write together. The Kanji was beautiful, the people men and women looked to be having a good time. Or maybe it's just because Grandpa Higurashi was a funny man that can keep people entertained?
Towa missed those times, no "Princess", or "Lady" training.
"Baba…"
"Young Lady, this one believes she has told you to address her as Baba-sama" came the automatic reply "And keep your strokes smooth choppy strokes are unseemly for a…"
"Lady of your position, I get it Baba-sama. But, I DO NOT CARE!" Towa stood up glaring at her grandmother.
"Sit down and calm yourself, Young Lady. Proper…"
"I don't care for all this properness you're preaching Baba, I haven't been a princess or lady for a long time. I wasn't raised like Setsuna was, a proper Warrior Princess. Baba, I'm Towa, I was raised by commoners surrounded by commoners." The girl started crying then but still somehow managed to continue standing and say what she wanted.
"Baba-sama, can't you accept Towa for who she is? Do you have to mold Towa to be someone she isn't? Towa can't..*Hiccup* can't ever be like Setsuna no matter how much I try! Towa is not as elegant and graceful as Setsuna is. Towa doesn't fight as well as she does. She's the perfect warrior and the perfect princess. She's stronger, faster, more beautiful. Towa isn't, but Towa wants to be as loved and respected just as much as she is. Baba-sama you say we are family, a family should accept and love each other unconditionally, right? Not only if Towa fits the picture of a perfect princess?"
The woman's golden eyes warmed a bit as she saw a shadow of the girl's mother in the girl before her. It will take a while, but someday the girl will become a strong woman of her own right.
The woman's crescent moon suddenly creased and a slight frown appeared, looking at the horrible writing opposite her. "Young Lady, you're calligraphy…"
"Baba, Towa is JUST TOWA! I never wanted to be a Lady, I just want to be me! You can accept that or bug off!" Towa stormed out of the study intending to take Ah-Un for a flight.
The woman smiled golden eyes twinkling, no, she didn't need to do anything…The girl had the spirit to become great on her own…Though a formal tutor for calligraphy would be needed…She has never seen such awful handwriting. What did the other world use as writing tools? Did they even write?
Sorry for not updating in forever. Hope this one went ok. I imagine Towa having some deep insecurities from being raised in the modern world by Sota. Anyways until otherwise stated, I'm considering her Rin's daughter, and I'm kinda excited about the new series.
