I stood next to Tsuna looking at the entrance to the south building of the school. Yamamoto walked in front of us to open the only door that looked usable since the main entrance and all the windows were blocked off by an extra layer of glass bolted in with metal framing. Stepping inside, the sight of the dark, damp building with holes in the ceiling and water flowing from them was enough to make me look in alarm at Yamamoto who was going to be fighting in these conditions.
"What is this?" Tsuna wondered aloud, echoing what was most likely everyone's thoughts.
The Cervello came out of nowhere, "This is Aquarion, the battlefield for the Rain battle. Water will be constantly pouring into the sealed area and begin filling the place from the first floor up."
So this place was more of a deathtrap than Ryohei's battle and maybe even Gokudera's battle. It was also a fight against time so that someone would win before drowning. I heard from Tsuna last night that the Cervello also did something similar with hurricane turbines that were scattered throughout the school and gave Bel and Gokudera a time limit of fifteen minutes. They were making this harder as each battle went passed
I heard the infamous laugh, "Ushishishi, sounds fun."
All heads turned towards the Varia members. Squalo stood in front, maliciously grinning as he flexed his sword hand proudly.
Bel jeered from Squalo's side, "I woke up with a ring. Fit for a prince isn't it?"
Gokudera muttered curses under his breath. I placed a hand on his shoulder and he tensed. "Relax, don't let him get to you," I said quietly. He nodded but the anger from his battle was still with him.
"Xanxus," Tsuna hissed.
"Yuki," Xanxus ignored him and I leveled my gaze at him. Tsuna opened his mouth to say something but Reborn landed on his shoulder before he could continue.
"Xanxus," I said, not breaking eye contact with the man.
"Snow, huh?" he smirked, looking me up and down as if checking my value as a fighter. "Why stay with scum like them? Come to the side that will win before you end up having to join anyways."
"What's he talking about?" Tsuna asked hurriedly.
If looks could kill, maybe mine could have, "I think we know who's going to win."
Xanxus wrinkled his face in disgust, "Losers are eliminated. Whether it's you guys or this scum." Squalo faced his superior in surprise. "I'll give you some time to think about it Yuki-chan." He added the honorific as if giving me some kind of respect will make me switch sides. I watched as Xanxus walked away, not bothering to watch the battle of his subordinates. What kind of leader doesn't support his people?
"Xanxus is serious," Reborn observed.
"What is he talking about?" Tsuna questioned me again, this time expecting an answer.
I didn't want to answer him knowing that my loyalty will lie with whoever wins these set of battles. Dino was my savior, speaking up out of nowhere, "Don't scare them too much, Reborn."
I winked at Dino who gave me a smile back. He told my brother, "Kyoya asked me about the ring battles yesterday. I think he's watching." Hibari's watching? And he said he wasn't on a team. I mused on his actions and his words to me earlier before the battle. Maybe he does care… in his own way. I struggled a little to figure out what 'his own way' would be.
"You mean he just heard about them?" Tsuna said in disbelief.
Reborn explained, "We have one ring while the Varia has three. This is an important match, our backs are against the wall." Everyone mulled over his words. I strung a couple cuss words in my head. This was not looking good and Xanxus knew that. That's why he said what he said to me.
Ryohei broke everyone's thoughts, "THEN HIBARI NEEDS TO JOIN THE HUDDLE. WHERE IS HE?" I stared in disbelief.
"He'd never do it," Gokudera said.
Yamamoto grinned, his relaxed demeanor still present, "Nope, not a chance."
Tsuna sweatdropped at the thought, "He'd totally beat us up."
Dino had the same expression as Tsuna, "I agree."
I laughed at the thought of Hibari joining us for a football huddle, "Maybe in another life."
Instead of Hibari, Basil joined the huddle. After a unanimous "fight" being yelled by all of us, Yamamoto went forward into the ring to begin his fight.
We had two rings with two more battles left to go. Yamamoto won yesterday's battle and today was the battle for the mist guardians. Whoever ours was. I made my way to where the Varia was staying. It was an upscale hotel outside of Namimori with a mauve exterior. Inside, the walls were embellished with gold designs and red accents. In the middle was a glass chandelier. I would have loved to stay and maybe have a cup of tea but I wasn't here for pleasure.
"Xanxus, Bel, Mammon, Levi," I said, acknowledging each person in the room. Bel gazed at me with mischievous eyes while Levi looked like he could stab me repeatedly right there and then.
"Come to join the winning side, eh?" Bel grinned wickedly.
"No," I took a seat next to the couch Bel was laying. His foot was wrapped up and elevated with a pillow. "Are you okay?" I asked him.
"Ushishi, come to check on the Prince, Yuki-chan?" he teased. Bel was one of the few Varia members I could stand to talk to when he wasn't being so egoistic. That wasn't always but it toned down sometimes that it was enough throughout the years for us to be able to talk to each other. I rolled my eyes at his antics.
"Guess I was wrong to be worried. You're okay. But I was hoping Luss would be here, too," I said, looking around for the girl-ish man.
"Lussuria is in the hospital," Bel answered.
"If you're not here to join, why are you here?" Xanxus's deep voice commanded.
I told him straight, "It doesn't matter if I join or not. Either way, I'm a guardian to whoever becomes boss." I wanted to shudder at the stare that Xanxus was giving me but my mind was too stubborn to let me embarrass myself like that in front of him, especially since I was the one to come here in the first place.
"Do you know who the mist guardian is?" Mammon's voice came from the ground on the other side of Bel.
I shook my head, "I'm as clueless as you are." I wasn't lying and Mammon seemed to trust me. Reborn hadn't told anyone who the mist guardian was. Tsuna was worried if the person was going to even show up.
"Doesn't seem very trustworthy," Bel snickered.
I snorted, "That's rich coming from you." The only trust these guys had with each other was trust enough to not kill each other during a mission and in the mansion. Just maim and fire.
"He's not going to win," Xanxus glared at me. I could easily guess he was talking about Tsuna. It was kind of disheartening. Xanxus has been training and fighting for so long that he had more experience over Tsuna when it came to combat. I just had to remind myself to believe in my brother.
"You don't know that," I said. For all I knew, Tsuna could have something on his sleeve. I didn't really know what Tsuna's training consisted of but Reborn mentioned that he had gloves similar to the ones Vongola Primo used. I could guess what they were going to do.
"As if the little pipsqueak could beat me," Xanxus said, flashing to me the sky ring around his neck. I had to fight the urge to glare back at Xanxus.
"Yeah, yeah, save it for later," I mumbled. "I just came to check on Bel and Luss but since they seem fine, I'll be taking my leave now."
I was almost out the door when a hand grabbed my wrist, "Yuki-chan, just join us on this side." Bel's eyes were always hidden, ever since I had met him. He wasn't begging me but he was trying to persuade me, even if it meant showing me his hidden somewhat-nice side. "Lussuria keeps complaining about there never being enough girls on the team."
I giggled at the thought of Lussuria pouting, but pushed Bel's hand away, "Sorry, Bel, I'm with my brother on this one. But stay safe, would you?"
We were all in the gymnasium, looking at my brother who was sound asleep.
I crouched down to him and poked him repeatedly in the cheek, "Tsuna." I dragged out his name. "Wake up." I pushed him slightly trying to get him to move but he was stiff as a board.
Gokudera was crouched across from me, just as worried as I was, "Tenth! I'm sorry I wasn't able to take care of you while you were hurt. Please be okay." He looked like he was near to tears.
Yamamoto smiled, "It's Tsuna. He'll be okay."
Gokudera faced Yamamoto irately, "You should be more worried about the Tenth, baka." Gokudera took out some dynamite.
I pulled Gokudera away, "Stop, Gokudera-kun, he's right. He'll be okay. If he just WAKES UP!" I yelled in Tsuna's face.
Tsuna's eyes opened slowly. He blinked a few times wondering where he was. If I had known yelling would wake him up I would have done it earlier instead of trying to be nice and poke him awake.
"Where are we?" Tsuna asked groggily. He lifted himself up with his hands.
Reborn answered, "We're at the site for the Mist battle."
Tsuna looked around, more alert this time. I was about to ask him if he was okay when Gokudera yelled before me, "Boss, are you okay?" He didn't answer him.
Tsuna found Yamamoto and asked, "Yamamoto, are you okay?" I smiled. He was always looking out for his friends and everyone else, no matter how mean they were to him. It was a quality I greatly admired from my brother but was not something that I completely had myself. I went up to my brother and gave him a hand. He accepted and I pulled him up from the ground.
Yamamoto assured Tsuna that he was okay but I gave my brother a look, "Are you okay? You slept for such a long time all of us were so concerned if you were going to wake up at all."
Tsuna meekly responded, "Sorry. I don't even remember why I fell asleep."
I narrowed my eyes, "What happened before you fell asleep?" I wondered if it was a concussion and maybe all of the training Tsuna had was finally taking a toll on him. I didn't know what else could cause it.
"I really don't remember anything," Tsuna repeated, rubbing his head softly. I frowned, and wondered if it had anything to do with the battles. Was it possible one of the Varia hurt Tsuna against the policies of the battles?
I listened as the others told Tsuna that the mist guardian wasn't coming. My frown deepened and looked at Mammon, who was ready across the gym. Xanxus sat regally on his throne while Levi, the Gola Moska and Bel stood behind him. I locked eyes with Bel, well Bel's bangs but I knew he was looking at me, and my jaw tightened. I could feel the smugness radiating off of them as we scrambled, wondering if our mist guardian would show up.
"He's here," Reborn looked at the door way behind us.
Out came a spiky-haired blonde with a permanent furrow in his brows and a boy with a white beanie and glasses. Both of them had to be near the same age as me. Tsuna screamed and Yamamoto and Gokudera tensed. I quickly went in front of everyone, getting into a defensive stance against the two.
"Calm down," Reborn said. I saw Gokudera reluctantly put away his bombs in the corner of my eye but I couldn't relax. Not when everyone else was on edge behind me. "They brought the mist guardian."
"You can't mean…" Gokudera started in disbelief.
"Rokudo Mukuro?!" Tsuna questioned Reborn. The guy who was with the Vindice? They were the ones that Tsuna defeated before I came to Japan. He was supposed to be my brother's mist guardian? I tried letting it sink in but I couldn't bring myself to believe that the person who tried to kill my brother was to be his guardian.
"Yuki, calm down," Reborn directly ordered me. I let my arms drop but not my guard. From behind the two boys came a girl who sported purple hair and an eyepatch. She was holding a trident and introduced herself as Chrome Dokuro.
Gokudera vehemently opposed trusting the girl. I was wary myself and scrutinized every move the girl made, as well as the two behind her. I waited to see what Tsuna thought. My brother sensed that she wasn't Mukuro and I let myself relax slightly. If Tsuna trusted her… then I guess I somewhat could, as well.
Chrome walked to my brother, thankful that he believed her and gave her a peck on the cheek. Tsuna's face burned. I don't think he's ever been kissed on the cheek before by someone other than mom. I had to admit, that was pretty funny and I laughed at Tsuna's red face.
Gokudera lunged towards Chrome, angry that a random girl he suspected to be Mukuro kissed his beloved boss. Luckily, Yamamoto was holding him back from doing damage to the girl who was supposed to fight tonight.
I elbowed my brother, jokingly, "I like her. How was your first kiss?" He shook his head and stuttered, not able to form coherent words.
I felt my phone vibrate in the back pocket of my shorts. It was the afternoon and I was doing my best to kill time. I was shifting in my bed through the night and my anxiety woke me up way before my alarm. I believed in Hibari's strength but Mukuro's words about a plan Xanxus had was on my mind. I wouldn't put it past Xanxus to come up with an evil plan, for lack of better words.
"Hello?" I answered into the phone.
"Yuki," My brother's voice called out to me and I stopped in place. He sounded concerned, "Where are you?"
"I'm walking around town trying to kill time before the battle."
"I'm taking a break from training really quick but I'm just a little worried," he hesitated.
I froze, "You, too?" I know that Yamamoto and Ryohei weren't as worried seeing as it was Hibari fighting tonight but I was relieved that I wasn't the only one distressed.
"You feel it?" He asked quickly.
"I don't really know what it is," I paused, trying to find the right words. "It just feels like there's something more going on. Not just that but dad's been gone, too."
"I don't know about dad being gone but could you watch out for the others? I know Gokudera will be a little temperamental but it would make me feel better knowing you're there, too," Tsuna said.
I smiled, "I'll be there. I trained with him so of course, I'm going to watch."
I could hear Tsuna smile back through the phone, "AH! Reborn! Okay, stay safe, I have to go." I heard a crash before Tsuna ended the call. The call curbed some of my anxiousness but made me even more uneasy at the same time knowing that Tsuna was just as worried as me.
The grass along the river went up to the bottom of my shins, tickling my legs as I walked past. It was a beautiful day, save for the flips and turns my stomach was making at the thought of tonight. I felt a presence behind me and turned around.
The black jacket and fringed black hair was unmistakable, "Hibari-san." I called out. He stood in place as I went towards him. He was an enigma. Someone who didn't let people close emotionally and beat people who did physically. He didn't seem to display any other emotion except annoyance and anger and I didn't know why I was going up to him. I thought about the possibility that I wanted a death-wish.
"Why are you crowding?" Hibari chided. Memories of the same words came to mind as I pictured the many fights we had throughout the week to train for today.
"I was just wondering if you were going to be okay tonight," I said shyly. I reprimanded myself for acting so timid in front of him even though we already sparred.
"Leave," He started walking again. I stared as his jacket flew behind him. I wondered if that was a signal that he was confident or if he was saving his energy to fight tonight. Either way, I didn't become a victim at the moment and I was okay with that.
A/N: I have successfully changed the other chapter to a first person POV which took a little but lemme tell you, writing this filler chapter was some hard shit. I really didn't want to go into details of the battle but the Cloud battle and Sky battle is pretty crazy stuff so probably those. I'm not the best writer, but really writing these has been a good break for me during quarantine and I don't know how many times I'm gonna say it.
Also I just wanted to say thank you to janinesherynasalalila for my first review! It means so much to me that you took the time to review :)
