A DOLLAR FOR MARY-ELLEN (Set on season 1)

When she was thirteen years old Mary Ellen decided to give her mother something productive for Mother's Day. Something that she knew very well her mother would know how to take care of. This way, a few weeks before the date, Mary Ellen started to find small things around the house to sell and every time she was successful in her selling campaign, she hid her next find under her mattress.

"What are you hidin', Mary Ellen?" Grandma would ask sometimes.

"It's a surprise, Grandma!"

Days came and went. When Mother's Day came, Mary Ellen was ready with the gift. The other children gave their mother what they could, from poetry, to music, a card, and a simple flower. Everything made Olivia smile and Mary Ellen decided to give her gift last, to cause a bigger impact.

When everyone finished, Olivia asked what her oldest daughter had behind her back, and Mary Ellen handed her nothing more and nothing less than a dollar bill.

The room fell silent for a minute, as Olivia looked in confusion at the bill. "Where did you get this, Mary Ellen?"

"I sold a few useless things we had in our house... don't worry, Daddy knew what I was doing and I wanted to give something special, Mama and with this dollar bill, you can keep it for an emergency or buy a two dollar bill and be rich!"

Inside Olivia wanted to laugh of her daughter's way of thinking, but she needed to put the serious frown up face on first. "And where did you learn such economic development?"

"Reading." Mary Ellen replied honestly and in response, the mother shot her oldest son a hard look.

"I swear Mama, I didn't let her close to my books!" John Boy said quickly, throwing his hands up in the air.

"Well, I'm glad you decided to study hard, it's a very… productive gift, my darling." Olivia said, and gave her eldest daughter a hug.

If there's something everyone knew about Mary Ellen Walton, it was that she had an eye for business and knew exactly how to make money from the smallest thing. Not doubt that all the expensive gifts Olivia received throughout her life were most certainly from Mary Ellen.
