Auntie Em's Appreciation

It was a few days after the Twister Incident and Dorothy coming back around. The house was mostly quiet, especially after the clean up of the place. Dorothy was out and about walking Toto. Henry, Hunk, Hickory and Zeke were outside taking care of the animals. And Auntie Em was sitting in a rocking chair on the front porch getting a little needle work done. She was in the process of making a new blanket, but she had the last few days on her mind. Em had been furious with how that horrid woman had come onto their property and demanded for Toto and making Dorothy greatly upset. Em had been very scared to death when the twister had came, but was even more scared when she and the boys had found Dorothy laying on the bed unconscious. Though Henry assured her that Dorothy would be alright, Em couldn't help but worry for her niece. When Dorothy came around, she had been so relieved and thanked God for it.

Speaking of Dorothy coming around, she heard the young woman entering the house. Dorothy called out, "Auntie Em!"

"On the other porch, Dorothy." Auntie Em said without looking up from her work. Soon she could hear her niece walking through the house. From the corner of her eye, she could see Dorothy with Toto in her arms. She opened the door and asked, "What are you doing?"

"Just working on a new blanket. Some of them got ripped during the twister and needed to either be replaced or fixed. I'm working on fixing one right now." Auntie Em said while glancing up before looking back down.

"Oh." Dorothy said as she set Toto down. A thought crossed Dorothy's mind and she remembered seeing Auntie Em's face when she had woken up from her amazing dream. Though her aunt had been relieved to see her awake and okay, she could tell that Em had been really worried about her. Pulling up another chair, Dorothy sat down and Toto jumped up into her lap. Dorothy then looked to Em and said, "Auntie Em."

"Hm?" She said, still not looking up from her work. Dorothy then said, "I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate you."

This made Em look up to her niece as Dorothy went on, "Uncle Henry told me how mad you were about how I had to give up Toto, and then there was you taking care of me. And I thank you so much for caring for me."

"Oh, Dorothy." Em said as she gently set her stuff down. She leaned forward and placed a hand on Dorothy's as she said, "I'll always care for you, Dorothy."

"What's this about caring for folks?" Uncle Henry said as he, Hunk, Hickory and Zeke came walking up. Auntie Em then asked, "You boys finish those chores?"

"Sure did, ma'am." Hunk nodded. Hickory then said, "We were just coming in for a breather and happened to hear you two a talkin'."

"So what's going on?" Zeke asks. Dorothy then said, "I was just telling Auntie Em how much I appreciate her."

"Hey, we all appreciate you, Em." Henry told her with a smile. Even the boys were all in agreement as Hickory said, "Yeah. You're like a mother to us."

"You take care of us when we come around. You give us something to eat even while we work." Zeke said. Hunk then said, "And you make sure that we're not too bad hurt."

"This farm would hardly be running without you." Henry said as he placed a hand on her shoulder. She looked to each of them with a smile as tears started to well up in her eyes. All five of them huddled around Auntie Em and said, "We love you, Em."

"I love ya'll too." Em said as she wrapped her arms around Henry and Dorothy.
