ELIZABETH´S CLEANING DAY
Ever since she insisted on keeping the lion cub, Elizabeth Walton was keen on keeping her promises on making sure the house, lion and her chores were all done and clean.
It was only a few days to Mother's day and Elizabeth sat with her siblings, dreaming on what to get her mother.
"We are getting Mama that vase she always wanted." Erin and Mary Ellen said as the kids sat around discussing their plans.
"I wrote Mama a song." Jason boasted proudly. "I bet she'll love it."
"John Boy and I are planning on getting some fabric for her." Ben said as he sat down after helping the oldest sibling to his chair.
"What are you planning on getting her, Jim Bob?" John Boy asked knowing his two youngest siblings were most likely stroking their pet lion, Teddy's, mane.
Teddy, the lion, yawned lazily causing the children to marvel at the soft roar that came along with it.
"I think I'll just write her a note and maybe go buy some candy from Ike's." Jim Bob said shrugging his shoulder. "What about you Elizabeth?"
The youngest of the Waltons didn't have an idea of what to do. She didn't have any money to buy anything for her mother. She also knew that giving her mother wildflowers as it was the same thing, she gave every year.
"I don't know." Elizabeth said softly smiling and letting out a chuckle when Teddy licked her fingers gently.
"It's time to clean up for dinner." Olivia called out through the screen door. "And make sure Teddy stays out of anything that might make the barn miserable to go in."
The children all nodded and set out to head inside while Elizabeth, alone, walked Teddy back into the barn. As she made sure he wasn't going to make a mess she smiled and hugged the lion gently. "I got it! I'll clean the house so that Mama doesn't have to do it!" The little girl clapped her hands as she beamed down at the lion. "I'll also make sure you're clean too so that sat Mama would love you just as much as all of us do."
The lion tilted his head unsure of what the young girl had said. But he gave her a quick lick to her cheek before curling on the hay and laying down.

Elizabeth woke up early on that Mother's Day before her grandmother. Being careful and leaving a note saying she was going to check on Teddy, the young girl walked outside and gently stirred the lion from his slumber. Elizabeth smiled as she gently tied a rope around his neck and led the animal to a small pond near her home where she was planning on bathing and even using one of Erin's old brushes, brushes the lion to make him clean and cute for her mother.
"Okay Teddy in the water." She said gently tugging on the rope towards the water, but the lion dug his claws inside the dirt and sat down refusing to move. "Come on Teddy. It's Mother's Day. The day where we celebrate out Mama. Don't you want to look nice for Mama?" Teddy yawned and Elizabeth grumbled as she squared her shoulders and stood in front of Teddy and began to pull on the rope. "Come...on...Teddy..." After the third hard pull, both lion and little girl landed in the water splashing the dirt causing mud to form.
The two began to splash non-stop the lion's paws barely missing the girl as Teddy paddled slippery towards the shore. Once the lion made it Elizabeth watched as Teddy began to roll in the dirt causing his orange fur to turn brown with mud before he began to run back towards the house. Elizabeth swam quickly hoping she remembered to close the main door to the house instead of leaving the shutter closed. When the young girl arrived she went pale as she saw the screen door hanging half-hardy on it's hinges and knew Teddy had gone inside.
The young girl paled when she stepped inside the door and saw the paw prints all over the floor. She found Teddy, thankfully not sleeping on any of the couches, or chairs but right in the middle of the floor. When Elizabeth walked in the lion quickly stood up and rushed outside knocking the young girl to the ground.
The loud commotion sent Olivia and John scurrying down the steps. When they saw their youngest scrubbing the floor while Teddy was tied to the tree just outside.
"Elizabeth what is going on here?" Olivia asked while John looked around and tried to make sense of what was going on.
"Mama, why are you up?" The young girl asked innocently.
"I heard crashing and out loud noises, then I heard nothing." Olivia answered seeing her husband slowly move to make some coffee.
"I'm sorry Mama." Elizabeth said tears starting to form in her eyes. "I was wanting to help clean the house, and make Teddy nice and clean...but I couldn't use the tub, because Teddy wasn't allowed inside the house but he wouldn't go into the pond. But then he rolled in the mud and came inside...I'm just cleaning up his mess...I'm sorry Mama."
Olivia let out a sigh and knelt beside her daughter. She gently enveloped her into a deep hug and kissed her cheek softly. "Oh Elizabeth," she cooed with a smile. "The fact you were trying is the best thing I could ever ask for." She smiled reassuringly towards her daughter and looked outside. She had just realized that Teddy had a large blue ribbon tied around his neck and, even though she still didn't trust the animal the gesture was cute. "And Teddy looks awfully cute today. Thank you."
"You're welcome Mama. Happy Mother's Day."
Olivia smiled and held her youngest daughter close. "Thank you Elizabeth."
