Prologue

What once was beautiful is now long gone—my whole world, what meant everything to me, suddenly turned upside down.

Lifting the jet black umbrella that I hold onto with both of my hands, my clouded, cerulean eyes are met with another's that stare back at me with benevolence and nothing but. A man who I am most familiar with out of anyone here in a cemetery where mother and father have just been buried. Instead of those behind me who simply speak with those around them only to hear themselves speak, he approaches me, and among the voices that harmonize soundly with the pouring rain, only one calls out to me in the near distance.

"Kioko Harada..? It is, isn't it?"

Somehow I am able to find my voice after some time of not using it, "Keigo Atobe..?"

Someone I have known throughout my years of when I was a child stands next to me. He holds his glance as a gentle simper grows on his lips. Then, he answers, "Yes, it is. It's good to see you after so many years, although it's a shame we meet in person again but like this."

"Yes... Yes, it is," I answer in almost a whisper as I scan Keigo's mature features before finding his eyes once more.

"Our deepest condolences for your loss. I'm afraid I'm the only one in my family who could make it, but we heard about what happened. We're very sorry about your parents," Keigo respectfully speaks while looking for but a second to his butler who holds a large umbrella above both his and Keigo's head.

Lightning strikes and suddenly, a memory of the night my parents were murdered flashes before my eyes; After returning home in the afternoon from an outing with friends through a window from outside I watched my parents die in the hands of a man I have never seen before in my life holding a knife.

I tighten my grip around the rubber handle of my umbrella.

"I understand. There's no need to apologize. I'm sure we'll find the killer soon. I've happened to see him with my own eyes."

Hearing my words, I notice Keigo's eyes soften.

"If you were close enough to the killer that you've seen him then I'm relieved to see you alive and unharmed. It seems that luck was on your side."

What comes after lightning is the accompaniment of thunder and yet again another memory flashes before my eyes; After seeing the murderer drop the knife seeping with blood the murderer's face was clear as day to me the moment he looked up and saw mine.

"I am as well. And may luck continue to be."

"It will be. I know so."

Keigo takes a moment to look down at my parents' graves with a sorrowful look before finding my eyes once more.

"As the killer is still on the loose you may be in great danger here. For the time being, come live with me. In Japan."
