Chapter 27: Being a Mother
"Rin, hi!" Kagome greets as she opens the door to her house.
"Hi Kagome! And hi princess!" Rin says as she coos at her goddaughter. Inume lets out a growl from her place on her mother's shoulder.
"She says hi," Kagome tells her with a giggle. "Come in, come in," she says as she steps back, allowing her friend into her home. Rin gives her a small smile before walking inside.
"Where is everyone?"
"I just put Kat down for his afternoon nap, Inuyasha's at work, and my mom went out to get groceries and pick up dinner, Kat wanted pizza."
"Sounds like fun," Rin states as they walk towards the living room. They both take a seat on the couch. "How are you doing?"
"Pretty good, today's one of my good days. I started talking to a counselor and we started working through some things, so that helps me. Izayoi and my mom are huge blessings; Izayoi helps with the kids in the morning and my mom helps me manage everything at night. Sango and Ayame stop by from time to time with their kids and we all have a huge playdate. Toga said that when I feel ready, I can start working from home or come back to the office. Everyone's been really supportive of me and I appreciate it," Kagome tells her. "Oh! Yash booked our spa trip for next Saturday."
"That's good," Rin tells her with a small smile. "And that sounds perfect. I need a day of relaxation."
"We can talk in a few. I was about to put this little girl to sleep," Kagome says as she takes Inume off her shoulder. "She just got her feeding and burping. She's a happy baby now," she coos as she looks down at her daughter. Inume stares up at her in confusion. Kagome giggles and nips her nose before leaning back. Inume lets out a small growl before yawning. Her mother gives her a kiss on the head before she starts to rock her. "It's going to take her a good minute to go to sleep," Kagome states with a chuckle as she looks up at her friend. "When Inuyasha hold-what's wrong?" She asks as she sees the small tears forming in Rin's eyes.
"It's nothing," she says with a sad chuckle as she starts to wipe the tears that had managed to fall down her check.
"You're not crying over nothing. What's wrong?" Kagome asks as she turns to face her. "When you called, you did sound a little anxious."
Rin sniffs as she tears start to run down her cheeks. "I'm just overacting. It's just that I can see the love you have for Inume. It's really beautiful."
Kagome nods as she continues to stare at her friend. She stares at her for a minute before her eyes widen and a huge smile forms on her face. "Omg! You're pregnant."
Rin burst out in tears and a sob at Kagome's statement.
"Oh Rin! It's okay. Bringing a child into this world is an amazing experience," Kagome says as she scoots over and wraps one of her arms around Rin. "Although there's going to be some pain and aches, nothing measures up to when you hold your baby in your arms for the first time and-"
"Stop it!" Rin shouts causing Kagome to jump in surprise and Inume to let out a cry. "Oh no! I'm sorry."
"Shhh, Inume. Shhh," Kagome coos as she rocks her daughter. "Can you grab her rocker; it's in the corner."
"Yeah, totally," Rin states as she quickly stands up and rushes towards the corner of the room that contains a baby rocker, blocks, and other children toys. Tears blur her vision as she stumbles onto the floor. She covers her eyes and mouth as she tries to stop the tears.
"Rin, what's-" Kagome starts to say but pauses as she sees the condition her friend is in. She quickly looks down at her daughter who had stopped crying but was still awake. 'Sorry little girl. Your nap time is going to be delayed for a few minutes.' She gives her daughter a kiss on the head before standing up and walking towards her friend. She carefully positions her daughter into her baby rocker before turning towards her friend. She gets down on the floor and wraps her arms around her. Rin automatically wraps her arms around her and cries into her chest.
"It's okay Rin," she mumbles as she runs her fingers through her hair. After crying for five minutes, Rin managed to stop. Kagome starts to rub her back as Rin sniffs; she pulls back and starts to wipe the tears off her cheeks and eyes.
"I bet I look a mess," Rin says with a teary chuckle as she leans off of Kagome's body.
"Never beautifier," Kagome jokingly says as she moves some of Rin's hair out of her face. Rin giggles as she continues to wipe and pat her face.
"So, are you going to tell me what's the problem? Does it have to do with you and Sesshomaru?" She asks as she tilts her face.
"No, well kinda," Rin softly says as she wraps her arms around her. "He's not the problem. I am."
Kagome raises a brow as she continues to stare at her. "What do you mean by that? What happened?"
Rin sighs as she glances at Inume before looking at Kagome. "A couple of weeks ago, I was feeling sick and was behind on my period; I thought I was pregnant."
Kagome nods her head in response. She was curious to what had made Rin so upset.
"So, I went to my doctor and she told me that I wasn't pregnant. I probably missed my period due to the stress of work and planning my wedding," she explains before letting out a sigh. "But when she ran some tests, she noticed something."
"What did she notice?" Kagome softly asks.
Rin sucks in a deep breath before explaining what happened. "She said I wasn't realizing eggs into my uterus because one of my fallopian tubes is blocked."
Kagome grasps as Rin let's out a teary chuckle. "I didn't know what that meant or how that affected me."
"Rin."
"It's a very rare condition you know?" Rin says as she looks at Kagome with angry and sad eyes. "To be born with a blocked fallopian tube. But guess who achieved the impossible, me!" She exclaims as tears run down her face. "Thank you to my unknown parents for ruining my life, once again."
"Rin, it's not-"
"My chances of Sesshomaru and I having kids are low and that's not even factoring in my age or previous medical history."
"Rin looks at me," Kagome says softly as she grasps her hands. Rin looks at her with wide and teary eyes. Kagome gives her a sad smile as she looks at her. "Everything's going to be okay."
"But-"
"Did you tell Sesshomaru any of this?"
Rin shakes her head no as she wipes the tears from her eyes.
"Okay," Kagome whispers to herself. She glances at her daughter who had her eyes closed. 'Inume will be up in a few minutes though. She likes to sleep in her own crib.'
"Rin take a deep breath with me. In, out, in, out." Rin nods her head as she does as she's told.
"Feel better?" Kagome asks with a tilt of the head. Rin nods as she looks at her friend. "Now, did the doctor say that there was a zero percent chance that you can get pregnant or that you're infertile."
"No, but-"
"But you still have a chance Rin; a chance to give birth to your own child in-"
"But what if I can't?" She interrupts. "What if I can't have a baby and give Sesshomaru the family and life he deserves?"
"Rin, you can be a mother regardless if you give birth, have someone do it for you, or adopt."
"But-"
"Rin, a mother isn't just someone who gives birth; giving birth plays a big part but it's not the only factor for being a mother. A mother is someone who takes care, nurture, and loves a child. A mother is someone who loves a child, regardless of their mistakes or faults. A mother is someone who wakes up at 2 in the morning to comfort their crying child or kiss their pretend boo boos," she says with a giggle causing Rin to chuckle as well. "Not everyone is fit to be a mother and not everyone wants to be a mother. Being a mother is a tiring job but it's worth it to see your child smile and see what they grow up to be. Rin, I know you can do all that, I know you can nurture and care for a child, even if it's not yours. You have a big heart Rin, a heart that is willing to accept and love anyone."
"Thank you, Kagome," Rin says as she sniffs.
"Any time," Kagome states as she pulls her into a hug. "It's easy to tell people the truth."
Rin giggles as she hugs Kagome back. They pull apart and Kagome stands up to grab someone tissues off the coffee table. She hands Rin a few tissues before taking her seat back on the floor. "Are you feeling better?"
"Yes. Thank you," Rin says as she blows her nose.
"Now, I want you to tell Sesshomaru what's going on and I want you guys to have a deep conversation about your future."
"But what if-" Rin starts to say with wide and tearful eyes.
"Sesshomaru won't leave you," Kagome automatically says. "He loves you too much to do that, to hurt you."
Rin relaxes a little at her statement. "I hope so."
"He won't," Kagome confidently says. "So, after you guys decide what you want to do, I want you to focus on this wedding!" She exclaims. "Your wedding is in five months and I need to know how much weight to lose in order to fit into my dress and how much alcohol it'll take to seduce Inuyasha. But judging by how handsy he's been, I don't think it'll take that much." They two women laugh at Kagome's joke, however, their laughter is stopped when they hear a cry coming from the baby monitor on the couch.
"Mama. Mama. Mama."
"That's Kat," Kagome says as she stands up. She grabs the baby monitor off the couch and turns it off as Katsuo starts to cry again. "I'll be right back," she says before walking out the living room.
Rin watches the young mother walk out the room before turning towards her goddaughter. Inume lets out a yawn as she stares back at her aunt with sleepy eyes; she had woken up when she heard her mother get up and leave the room.
"I bet you think I'm a mess too, huh?" She coos as she grabs Inume. Inume twitches her nose as she stares up at her. Rin stands up and begins to sway from side to side as she rocks Inume. "Aunt Rin isn't crazy. She was just having a hard time and overthinking things," she confesses. "I was hoping to give you a playmate soon, but it looks like that won't be happening at all, well at least, anytime soon."
She lets out a defeated sigh before a small smile forms on her face. "But, until that time comes, I'm going to spoil you and your brother. I'm going to work on my parenting skills on you guys, whether you like it or not," she half-heartedly says with a giggle. She looks down and sees that Inume has already fallen asleep. "Hn. Looks like I can do this parenting thing."
"Is she asleep?" Kagome asks as she walks into the living room with her son on her hip and his arms wrapped around her neck. His head is leaning against the area between her shoulder and neck.
"She sure is," Rin whispers back. "Katsuo?"
"Yeah, he was just looking for his mama. But I'm going to put him back to bed. Want to help with her?" Rin nods her head yes in response.
Kagome gives her a smile before walking out the living room and motioning Rin to follow her.
"For right now, we have the kids sleeping in the same room. Well only for their naps, Inume sleeps in another crib in our room at night," Kagome explains as they enter the kids' orange and green decorated nursery. Rin nods as Kagome walks to the right side of the room to put her son back into his crib while she walks towards the other side of the room to place the sleeping Inume into her own crib.
"Does she sleep on her stomach? I know Sesshy likes to do that because sleeping on his back sometimes irritates his tail."
"Yes, she does," Kagome tells her with a giggle. "The doctors recommended that we have her sleep on her stomach for naps but on her back at night to see which way she prefers."
Rin lets out a chuckle as she carefully maneuvers Inume and lays her on her stomach. She makes sure she looks comfortable before grabbing a blanket and bringing it up to lay in the middle of her back. She smooths out her soft silver hair and smiles as a brief smile forms on Inume's face.
"How's everything over here?" Kagome asks as she walks towards her daughter's crib. She smiles as she sees her daughter. Kagome bends down and kisses her small forehead before leaning back up to stare at her.
"Look at you," Kagome softly says as she bumps Rin's hip. "You peacefully put a newborn to sleep. Not many people can say that."
"Yeah," Rin absently says before turning to face the smiling Kagome. Kagome giggles as she wraps her arms around Rin's shoulder.
"You're going to be a great mother Rin. I know it," Rin stares at her for a minute but smiles as well.
"Thank you, I needed that," she responds before turning her head to look at the sleeping newborn.
"Anytime, Rin. Anytime."

Responses to reviewers from Chapter 26:
Missyouneek818: Thanks for the idea of Kagome and Inuyasha having a couple's getaway… We might see that in the upcoming chapters. And true. Kagome wants to wait on having kids; she just wants to enjoy the kids she has now. A lemon may be coming soon as well. I am staying safe, been inside for almost 2 months now. Lol. Thank you for the review and I hope you enjoyed this chapter.
WildHeart44: Lol! Thanks for correcting my errors in order to enjoy the story. I thought the fall was scary but also added some comic relief since Inume was confused about the whole matter. Thanks for the review. I hope you enjoyed this chapter.
Susu-Anon: Thanks for your review. The moms are here to save the day! Lol.
