Part Three

She was running late. Not just by a mere five or ten minutes, a good half an hour and it was entirely her own doing. Over running staff meetings and paperwork could not be blamed for this one especially seeing as she had arrived home early in preparation for the evening ahead. Anticipation was coursing through her veins and her frustration and anxiety at being faced by a bath full of cold water and nothing to wear had taken its toll, and so, in an attempt to salvage a peaceful five minutes, she had poured herself a generous glass of wine and promptly fallen asleep. Only as she stirred groggily did she notice that the contents of the glass had pooled into her lap thus ruining her favourite blouse.

Was it an omen? Should she take it as a sign for the night ahead? She shuddered and set the glass on the table in front of her, her heart surging with an impending sense of doom. It was only then that she noticed the small package that she had placed on top of the novel that she has been reading at a rate of one page a term. Her lips curved into a smile and she shifted slightly to reach it with her fingertips, the fuchsia tissue paper crinkling underneath her touch. Her smile widened at the choice of wrapping before dancing into a beam as a beautiful soft pink leather bound journal slipped from between the un-sellotaped layers and dropped onto the cushion beside her. Wanting to save the paper as a reminder, she creased it carefully and slotted it inside the cover of the book.

Chuckling softly, she noticed that he had inscribed the first page with a message for her, his messy handwriting spilling across the page.

Rach…

I couldn't help noticing that your current diary/notebook thing is falling apart at the seams. Also Miss Mason, I do not think a pink polka dot covered one is particularly professional for a head mistress, do you? So when I saw this one I thought of you and had to buy it.

I do that a lot Rachel. Think of you that is, but it would seem that that is as far as I get before uncertainty and insecurity (or is it cowardice?) kick in and gladly relieve me of my senses which seems to be happening rather a lot of late. If you're reading this it means that I've finally found my nerve and invited you for the meal which I have been planning in my mind since March!

Anyway, I hope you like the present and I'll see you later.

Her fingers traced his words before she closed the book and held it to her chest, tears welling in her eyes but the broadest of smiles playing on her lips.
