Six stared down at the little stick in her hands. She set in on the bathroom counter and grinned. She didn't say it out loud, since she wasn't sure whether Nine could hear her or not. Six wanted this to be a surprise… But how to tell him?
On May 10, Six was making breakfast as Nine came into the kitchen with a yawn. "Have fun on that retreat with your students," she said as she portioned the eggs onto two separate plates.
He groaned. "Why did I think that leaving at 5 am was a good idea? And on a Sunday?" he asked her as he sat down at their kitchen table. She handed him a cup of coffee, and he took a long sip.
"You thought it would force you to wake up earlier, plus you like torturing your students," she shot back with a grin. "Besides, it means we can have a few minutes together in the morning before I head out."
"Yeah, yeah, you got the fancy government job and I get to yell at a bunch of brats… Something about this seems unfair."
She grinned at him and put his plate in front of him. "Come on, eat something. You don't have a break until this afternoon."
They ate their breakfasts in a companionable silence, which they only occasionally broke to make small comments. This early in the morning, there really wasn't anything to discuss.
Finally, Nine glanced at the clock and stood up. "Time for me to go. Do you need help with anything before I head out?"
Six grinned and shook her head. "I've got it covered."
He leaned down to kiss her, but she pulled away slightly. "What?"
"Aren't you forgetting something?" she asked him with a faint smile.
For a moment, his face turned white with panic. After several seconds, though, he frowned at her. "What? It's not your birthday or our anniversary. I'm not sure what I'm missing here."
Six let out a laugh. "You're not going to wish me a happy Mother's Day?"
He frowned. "But you're not a mother, we don't…" he stared at her, and a grin suddenly spread across his face. "You're not… are you?"
Six nodded, and he wrapped his arm around her. "Yes, I found out a few weeks ago."
Suddenly she was up in the air, and they were spinning. Nine grinned at her, his features covered in a kind of joy she hadn't seen in years. "I love you," he said when he finally set her down. "I love you so much." He leaned down and pressed a hand to her still-flat stomach. "And I love you, junior."
"We are not calling him or her junior," Six protested around her own laugh. "And I love you too. Now, go you're going to be late."
He groaned. "You cannot make that kind of announcement and then expect me to leave for a long retreat with a bunch of hormonal teenagers, sweetheart."
She smirked at him. "We can celebrate later, when I get off work."
Nine gave her one last look before he sighed and headed out. Six busied herself with cleaning up the remains of their breakfast before changing out of her pajamas and enjoying a cup of tea on the sofa. It had been worth waiting so long to tell him, she thought. The panic on his face as he'd tried to remember what celebration he had forgotten would keep her amused for another few weeks, at least.
She was glad that he'd been as overjoyed as she was. For a moment, a scary moment when she'd found out she was pregnant, Six had been terrified that Nine wouldn't… wouldn't want it. That she'd probably leave, and find herself on Marina or Ella's couch.
But everything had worked out wonderfully, in the end.
Happy Mother's Day to all the mothers out there! My friend sent me a link to a youtube video with a compilation of pregnancy announcements, and that definitely inspired this oneshot. I hope you enjoyed!
