"Please can I try out my broom?"
The small voice exploded with excitement as he looked up at his dad. A grin stretched across his small face and his eyes glowed. Bright wrapping paper was still littering the floor of the Potter's living room.
James had already told his parents it was his 'best birthday ever' at least three times, even before his dad brought out his last present. The box was covered in red paper and was at least five feet long. When he opened it, he shrieked with joy. His mother's reaction was quite different.
"Harry James Potter," she had whispered. Harry had just grinned and shrugged. She watched as her son opened it up and begged to try it out. They had not discussed this.
She shook her head. As much as she loved flying, she couldn't understand why her husband thought it was a good idea for a five-year-old to have a broom.
"Yeah, let's go try it out," Harry answered. He knew Ginny wouldn't have let James have it if he had asked her, but he was confident she wouldn't take it away.
"He is at least going to wear a helmet, Harry," Ginny said anxiously.
"Alright," Harry agreed.
"And be careful," she added.
"I'll be fine, Mum," James said, rolling his eyes in the way only a five-year-old can. Harry laughed and led James out to their backyard.
The bright July sun promised another hot day, but the air was still fresh with the morning wind.
"All you have to do is lay your broom at your side and say 'Up!'," Harry explained. He summoned his own broom and demonstrated.
"Up!" James commanded. After three tries, the broom shot up to his hand. Harry spent the next few minutes demonstrating how to sit on the broom and push off the ground. It wasn't ten minutes before James was flying around. Though he was still close to the ground, he had remarkable control over his broom.
A sandy-haired three-year-old came running outside.
"Can I try?" he asks, looking up at his dad. Harry was reluctant but finally agreed to let the clumsy toddler join him on his broom.
Ginny looked out the window to see all of her boys in the air. James was speeding up, just to see how fast he could stop. Albus was sitting in front of Harry, flying in circles lazily. She gathered Lily up in her arms and grabbed a blanket. She spread the pale pink blanket out and laid the almost one-year-old down on it. She summoned her broom and took off on it to join them, but still never getting too far from Lily.
Ginny laughed as she saw the two brooms racing around the yard. Later most of the family would be over, and the party would begin.
The days flew by, and she knew it wouldn't be long until the three of them were all off to Hogwarts. She would have to treasure every moment she got.
Just like this one.
