Sasuke returned to the village early one morning. The village was decked out in pink.
"What's going on here?" He thought. As he started walking through the village back to his home. He noticed lots of vendors selling flowers, candy and jewelry. Finally, at one he noticed a sign reading "Happy Mother's Day." He finally understood.
Mother's Day is a day he hadn't celebrated since the Uchiha Massacre. He wasn't even sure what Fathers should do for the Mother of their children. All he knew is that Sakura would be happy that he was home for it.
"Dad?" A voice said behind him. Sasuke turned around to see his daughter, Sarada.
"Dad! You're home!" She said running to her father and giving him a hug. Sasuke smiled and leaned down to hug his daughter. "Mom is going to be so happy you came home today! You are... coming home, right?"
"Yes. I was just heading home." He answered warmly. Sarada smiled.
"This is going to blow my present out of the water."
"What did you get her?" Sasuke asked. Sarada dug in her bag.
"I found this old necklace in her things. So, I had it restored." She pulled out a small silver box and opened it to show her father. There was the Crest of the Uchiha clan on it.
"I gave this to Sakura the day we got married."
"I hope it's okay that I got it restored..." Sarada said.
"She'll love it." Sasuke said as they started walking. Sarada put the necklace back in her bag. "I don't know what I should get for her."
"Mom won't want you to get her anything. The best gift you could give her is being home and spending time with us today."
Sasuke knew Sarada was right. Sakura wasn't a materialistic woman; she never was even when they were younger. All she wanted then was for Sasuke to notice her. All she ever want now was Sasuke to come home to her every once in a while. At the same time, Sasuke wanted to do something to let her know he loves her and appreciates everything she does and everything she's done their entire relationship from the time they were put in Squad 7.
"Do I see an Uchiha in destress?"
"Uncle Kakashi!" Sarada said as Kakashi walked up to them.
"Hey Kakashi." Sasuke said.
"Sasuke, what a pleasant surprise. Sakura will be happy to see you. Tell me, what do you have planned for her?"
"That's the thing Kakashi..."
"You didn't even know, did you? Can't say I'm surprised. All the days start to run together when you're on missions. Well then I can give you some advice."
"I don't need any advice from those books..." Sasuke said.
"Books?" Sarada asked.
"This isn't from that. This is from my years of knowing you and your beautiful wife. She won't want anything more than for you to come home to her. But you still want to do something to show her your love. So, I suggest getting her a single red rose. The small simple gesture will mean more than any expensive gift ever could. And it'll be the icing on the cake. The cherry on top. The coup de gras of her day."
Sasuke nodded. For once Kakashi gave good advice that wasn't from Make-Out Paradise. Sarada and Sasuke set off towards their house and stopped on the way to pick out a perfect rose for Sakura at one of the vendors. Sasuke knew nothing about flowers and asked his daughter to help him pick out one Sakura would like. Sarada was good at picking out flowers and found a perfectly shaped vivid red colored rose with a long stem. Sasuke paid for it and they continued back to the house.
"Ok dad, I have an idea. When we get home, I'll walk inside and tell mom I have a surprise. I'll have her stand somewhere with her eyes closed. Then you come in and we surprise mom."
"Sure." Sasuke didn't normally go for dramatics but went along with her idea. When they arrived home Sarada did as she planned. Sasuke stood outside as his daughter went inside.
"Mom, I'm home!"
"Welcome home!" Sakura said. Sarada ran up to her mom and hugged her.
"I have a surprise for you!"
"You didn't have to do anything for me." Sakura said.
"Trust me. Stand right here and close your eyes." Sarada ordered her mom. Sakura stood in the hallway leading to the front door and closed her eyes. When she was in position Sarada mentioned for Sasuke to come inside through the window. Sasuke walked inside and stood in front of his wife holding out the rose.
"Okay mom. On the count of three. Open your eyes. One... two... three!"
Sakura opened her eyes to see her husband and daughter standing in front of her and the single red rose Sasuke was holding. Sakura was surprised and definitely didn't expect this. She smiled at her family.
"Happy Mother's Day! Dad's home!" Sarada beamed. Sakura could feel herself getting misty eyed.
"This is the best gift ever." Sakura said walking up to Sasuke and taking the rose.
"Thank you, Sasuke. It's beautiful." Sakura's cheeks turned a light shade of pink.
"You're welcome." Sasuke said.
"Mom, I have something for you too." Sarada pulled the small silver box back out and handed it to Sakura. Sakura took the box and opened it.
"Oh wow. It looks great."
"Dad told me he gave you that when you got married."
"He did. Did he tell you where it came from?" Sarada shook her head "no." "He found it in his mom's belongings one day. He decided to keep it and give it to whoever he married on their wedding day." Sakura told the story while fastening the necklace around her neck. "I always loved this necklace, but stopped wearing it when it started looking dingy and worn. Thank you, Sarada."
"It needed a lot of work. But they were happy to restore it."
"It looks better than I remember it ever looking." Sasuke said. Sarada smiled.
"I have to go get ready. I'll leave you two alone." She said.
"Ready?" Sasuke asked.
"I made reservations for the three of us for breakfast at mom's favorite restaurant."
"That had to take months of planning!" Sakura said. Sasuke was confused on why she made it for the three of them. He didn't even know he was going to be in town.
"Well yeah, but ever since dad started coming home more frequently whenever I make reservations, I make them for the three of us, just in case dad comes home on a day we have plans. So, I'm going to get ready." Sasuke smiled watching his daughter run off.
"I'm so glad you're home." Sakura said taking Sasuke's hand and walking into the living room. "Is it safe to assume this wasn't planned?"
"Yeah… I'm sorry, Sakura. I told Naruto I would be coming back tomorrow, but I decided to come back a day early to spend more time with you and Sarada." Sasuke said sliding off his cloak and sword and hanging them in the closet.
"Well, then this is the best present ever. My husband surprises me on Mother's Day without realizing it. Coming home a day early from a mission to spend time together as a family. This is the best thing a mother could ask for. I definitely have to do something special for you on Father's Day."
"I don't deserve it. I've been absent for much of my daughter's life."
"But you're here now and that's what matters. You're trying to be a good father and husband. Which you always have been."
"Today isn't about me. It should be all about you. You're the best mother and wife. Not many other women would stick with an absent husband. It shows what an amazing person you are. And that's why I love you." Sakura blushed.
"I love you, Sasuke. I always have and always will." Sakura said wrapping her arms around Sasuke's neck and pulling him down to her level and planting a kiss on his lips.
"Mom! Dad! Are you guys ready?" Sarada called. Sasuke pulled away from his wife.
"We're ready!" Sakura said from the living room. Sasuke and Sakura walked back to the front door and met their daughter.
The Uchiha family walked to Sakura's favorite restaurant and had a beautiful breakfast. They spent the rest of the day in town doing whatever Sakura felt like doing. They took a walk down by the river, went shopping and told stories about their days in Squad 7 and the missions they went on.
"Wait, you met Princess Gale?" Sarada asked as they were having a picnic dinner by the river. "I just watched one of her movies a few days ago. What was she like?"
"A pain in the neck," Sasuke said laying down and putting his head in Sakura's lap.
"She kept running away from the set because she didn't want to go back to the land of Snow."
"I haven't watched that one yet. Were you in the movie?"
"Naruto probably was. He was the one who kept finding her. We might be at some point, but it wasn't planned. We were attacked." Sasuke answered.
"I hope I can get a cool mission like that someday. That was a Genin ranked mission?"
"No, it ended up an S-ranked mission. It was originally an A-ranked. They wanted Kakashi on the mission, so he brought us."
The Uchiha family went on telling stories that wouldn't give away Sasuke or the Uchiha clan's past. Sakura couldn't think of a better way to spend Mother's Day. This truly was the best Mother's Day ever.
