Clarke Griffin sat in the shade of a thriving sycamore tree, with her back against the trunk, her knees propped up by her feet and a sketch pad and charcoal pencil resting on her thighs. In front of her, a meadow filled with wildflowers, long grasses and too many insects to name, laid untouched by humans for a century in the glorious sunshine of late spring. She had travelled that bit further from camp to find somewhere undisturbed by the 100 because for several miles around the dropship, the land had been foraged and farmed. Paths had been trodden down on their regular routes, the stumps of trees used for firewood dotted the forest and it was difficult to find somewhere to be truly alone. But this meadow was undisturbed, and as yet undiscovered by the rest of the 100, which was why it was Clarke's chosen place to spend her allotted personal time when she had the chance to escape camp for an hour.
Unfortunately, she couldn't go there to sketch the beautiful landscape whenever she wanted; everyone had to work hard and earn their personal time to ensure that there was an adequate supply of food, water and firewood. She had a radio, scavenged from Mount Weather, on her possession so that she could be contacted if there was a medical emergency in her absence, or if one of the girls went into labour. Each time there was a birth, it was both an exciting and nerve-wracking time for Clarke. As she had almost finished her medical training prior to being locked up, she was the camp's doctor and thus it was her responsibility to ensure the safe delivery of newborns. Potential complications were always on her mind, but each birth brought them closer to their ultimate goal; the reason they were sent to the ground.
Chancellor Jaha had sent the 100 to Earth to determine whether radiation levels were low enough to allow the continuation of their species. Due to a high exposure of radiation on the Ark, scientists believed that the levels of residual radiation on their planet of origin were safe enough for habitation. However, they were unable to guarantee that reproduction would be viable as it was possible that pregnancies on Earth would result in a high number of mutations that would lead to the extinction of their species within a few generations. The 100 were expendable and a waste of limited resources so they were sent down with one objective: to prove that the birth defect rate on Earth would be equal to or lower than the current rate of 3% on the Ark. One hundred was determined to be suitable number of children to prove the rate on Earth and if the defect rate was acceptable, the Chancellor would launch Project Exodus to bring the people of the Ark down to Earth. A group of fifty males and fifty females from Juvenile Lockup were sent to Earth with Lincoln, an Ark Guard, to keep the peace. Unbeknownst to the Chancellor Jaha, stowaway Bellamy Blake, who posed as another Guard, joined them so that he could be with his sister. But if their aim wasn't challenging enough for a bunch of teenagers, life support on the Ark was on its last legs so they had limited time to be successful. If they weren't, or the defect rate was deemed too high, Chancellor Jaha would use the remaining resources to put a few dozen people in induced comas on the Ark to allow radiation levels to decrease further whilst minimising the utilisation of resources. But it would mean mass cullings of innocent civilians to give a privileged few a shot at survival.
It had been twelve months since the 100 had been sent down to the ground and there had been twenty-one healthy babies born with a further twenty-three girls who were expecting over the coming months. One of whom was Octavia Blake, who was almost full term and due to deliver any day now. Her brother, Bellamy, had initially frowned upon her relationship with Lincoln, or anyone for that matter because he was very protective of her, and had been since the day she was born. But he'd seen how fiercely independent her time in lockup had made her, how trustworthy Lincoln was, once he got to know him, and had since been impressed by his sister's ability to continue hunting and working hard throughout her pregnancy. Both he and Clarke had tried to convince her to slow down but the feisty teenager did what she wanted and wouldn't dare to be seen doing something someone else had told her to do.
Thanks to Clarke's mother, Abby, a drug that caused superovulation had been sent down on the dropship. When taken, Femetropin increased the possibility of multiple pregnancies which would reduce the amount of time needed to produce one-hundred babies. Clarke herself had taken the drug to encourage others to follow in her lead and had subsequently given birth to a healthy pair of twins, Mason and Ava, who had just reached three months old. They were back at the camp being looked after by their father, the stowaway who was never meant to leave the Ark. Initially, her and Bellamy had strategically agreed to procreate together to act as role models for the rest of the delinquents. Initially, their relationship had been purely physical for the sake of conception but as she progressed through her pregnancy and acknowledged that at times, she did need some support, they had become closer. It had taken some time for her to trust him after what he had done to get on the Ark, but the past year had taught her that they wouldn't have stood a chance at succeeding without him. Not only had he helped to keep control of the 100, but if it weren't for him, she wouldn't have two gorgeous babies that she adored and whom her parents – who remained on the Ark – couldn't wait to meet.
Sadly, being leaders of such a large group and parents to young children left very little time for themselves. And although it meant spending less time as a couple, they had recently taken to occasionally spending their designated personal time alone, rather than together. Sketching the meadow, using paper and charcoal that they'd salvaged from the bunker, allowed Clarke to relax and clear her mind from worrying about where their next meal was coming from, or how long it would be before the life support on the Ark failed completely, even if it was just for a little while. One year ago, she couldn't have possible imagined that she'd be where she was right now; looking across scenery she'd only ever seen pictures of on the Ark, feeling the gentle breeze on her face and the smell of blossoming honeysuckle and sweet pea flowers in the meadow. A familiar sensation of fullness building in her chest informed her that it wouldn't be long before she'd had to go back to camp to feed her little ones. A year ago, she had figured that she'd be in the Skybox until her 18th birthday when she would be floated, but instead she had been given the responsibility to ensure the survival of the human race. It was never going to be an easy challenge, and they still had so much more work to do but she and Bellamy were the assumed leaders of a functioning community. It was made of people who were once imprisoned on the Ark for their crimes but were now fully-fledged members of the group, most of the time anyway.
So much had happened in the past year; both the 100 and those who remained on the Ark had lost important loved ones since the dropship had brought them to the ground but it would all be worth it in the end. They were almost halfway to meeting their objective if current pregnancies were included in the numbers and so far, it appears that the defect rate would be lower than the Ark's. Clarke's generation were never meant to set foot on the Earth but it seemed that they would be the pioneers of the remaining population of humans in bringing them back to their home planet. She'd formed new relationships and grown as a person and as a mother and still had so much more to learn about herself. Clarke had no idea what the next twelve months had in store for her and she couldn't possibly imagine how many more things she'd have to reflect upon, one year from now. She could only hope that each day that passed was hopefully a day closer to being reunited with her friends and family on the Ark when they too, would take their final journey to the ground.
A/N: Hi guys! Thank you so much for reading :-). This is a little oneshot I decided to write along the same lines as a potentially pretty lengthy fanfiction story that I've been thinking of writing. Please let me know if there's interest in a longer version of this kind of storyline – any feedback is greatly appreciated! Stay safe x
