Stoick was yet to choke out another word so taking advantage of the silence Hiccup continued, "Dad look, the big dragon who died out there was their queen. She controlled the other dragons and they had no choice but to do her bidding which was to raid us vikings for food. Now she's dead there'll be no more raids. Now that the dragons won't have to raid us we can make peace with them, even become friends with them if you just give them a chance.
Stoick, still at the 'attempting to process the fact that my only son is freinds with a dragon, a Nightfury no less and it's not trying to kill anyone' stage finally managed to splutter out a few more words. "What, how."
Then fully getting his voice back spoke in a deep serious voice, "Hiccup" he began. "do you really have to go and make everything so complicated, with all your opinions on peace and friends and dragons. As a chief this may be wishful thinking but sometimes I wish you could give me problems with easy clear cut solutions." he finished. "Or no problems at all actually." he added as an afterthought.
"Well as hopeful as you are there's no getting around the fact that the matter that now needs addressing is wether we can have peace and wether we find a new home for the dragons or even accept them into our village because they no longer have one of their own. Hiccup shot back, the image of defiance.
Stoick looked thoughtful. "As a chief I need to be flexible enough to adapt to changes, big and small. But I also need to accept those that will benifit the tribe no matter how strange or daunting they might seem." he said.
"Usually that isn't a problem but this time I dont know if it will benifit the tribe so I will allow them into the village in a trial basis only." he warned Hiccup, after carefully contemplating how to craft the future of his tribe.
To Hiccup this was more than he expected from his dragon hating father and he eagerly accepted this offer and so, over the next few weeks Berks village was radically transformed.
Now the dragons ate fish from the nightvision torches that used to get them killed, roosted on the houses that they once tried to burn and made peace with the humans they once where enemies with.
No one adapted to the new life better than Hiccup but the rest of the teens weren't far behind. After hearing the story about Hiccup taking down the nest queen in dragon back they wanted to become dragon riders with Astrid on a Deadly Nadder, Snotlout on a Monstrous Nightmare, Fishlegs on a Gronkle and the twins, Ruffnut and Tuffnut on a Hideous Zippleback.
The trial basis of the dragons staying was lifted in a matter of days and a permanent dragons nest was set up in the Viking village.
The peace between the dragons and the vikings of Berk had begun.
The End
