In the Eyes of the Butterfly
Chapter 4
Elena's soft snores filled the room as Damon gently took the covers off his body and tiptoed out of the room. If he was to learn anything about this life, he had to begin from the source of it. He had to find out who he was in this life and fast before it was too late.
Making his way to the room he assumed was the other Damon's study, he grabbed a nearby picture off his desk and examined it. Wanting to get as much information from it as possible. What he wasn't expecting was what happened next.
Blinding pain split through him as he stumbled grabbing his head between his hands as flashes passed through his memory. No not his memories, but the other Damon's. He was still in this body somewhere and he had no clue what he must have been feeling at this moment, but for now what he wanted was to show him something. He was all for it if it helped him out back to his old life somehow.
"I don't understand, what are you trying to show me?"
Memories flashed before his eyes before the other Damon settled on one. One that intertwined with his own memory.
"Why are you showing me the day that me and Rebekah started our company?"
Something in the back of his mind told him to just wait as he gazed at the memory ready to relive it yet again.
"What are we doing here?" Rebekah asked looking around the empty building as Damon smiled from ear to ear.
"Well you are now standing in what is soon to be Salvatore and Mikaelson attorneys at law."
"No way! The loan went through!"
Nodding, his smile grew bigger as Rebekah squealed leaping in his arms as he lifted her up and kissed her pulling her close and holding her there until he couldn't stand it anymore and had to put her down. Never breaking their kiss. He hoped this never ended. This feeling of finally succeeding. He was so happy. And nothing could bring him down at this moment. Nothing at all.
Except it did. His company went under before it had a chance to begin. Or at least in his life it did. In the other Damon's life, it had thrived. But how did this have to do with how him and Elena met?
"Patience" a voice in his head said as the memories seemed to flashforward some years to a point of time he did not recognize.
"Where are we?"
"Just wait. You'll know the answer soon enough."
"Are you serious? You're not coming home yet again?" Rebekah asked hands on her hips.
Frustrated, Damon threw his reading glasses down on the desk and looked at her with narrowed eyes. He was tired of her bullshit and he really didn't have time to deal with her pessimistic attitude at the moment.
"Listen Rebekah I don't have time to talk about this. Can you please just go home?"
"Not until we talk about this."
"Talk about what? I'm working. This has to be done by tonight. What the fuck don't you get about that?"
"You know what fuck it. If you want to stay here all day and all night than fine go right ahead. Just remember the longer this shit goes on the higher the chance is that you won't have a wife to come home to. Keep that the fuck in mind while you're working well into the night tonight."
"Rebekah- "but before he could say anything, she was gone.
"What was the point of showing me that?" Damon asked annoyance feeling his every nerve.
"What's the point of showing you anything if you're going to be so impatient? You wanted to know how we met Elena and I'm showing you, but it won't make sense without the other stuff that's at play. Now shut up and be quiet for half a second. Damn."
"Sorry." Damon answered as his vision flashed and he saw himself in the office working hard as Rebekah opened the door to reveal none other than-
"Elena." He whispered as this version of Elena smiled at him coming towards his desk with her hand extended in a way of greeting.
"Damon, Ms. Gilbert is here to see you."
"It's a pleasure to meet you Mr. Salvatore."
"Nice to meet you Ms. Gilbert. It'd nice to have some help around here for a change."
"Well I'm glad I can lend my assistance."
"It's appreciated. Where should we start first?"
"Well I can start by organizing your files and setting up a few of your meetings for you."
"Sounds like a plan."
"Alright. Let's get started."
"Damon?" a voice asked sending him out of his vision and back to present day.
"Elena?" he asked turning around to see her waiting in the threshold.
"Dinner's ready." She said fidgeting with her hands as he crossed the space between them and grabbed her hands giving her a smile.
"I'll be down in a minute." He said with a smile as she left and he took one last look at the room before joining his new family for dinner.
