The Ultimate Detective and The Ultimate Hope Gaiden: Kyoko Naegi's First Mother's Day
*Knock, Knock*
"Coming!" Makoto called as he hurried to the door of their apartment, his eyes brightening as Hana appeared in the entryway.
"Hi Mom! Happy Mother's Day!" Makoto greeted happily as she walked inside, her son warmly embracing her as her husband watched from behind with a smile before walking inside.
"Hi, Dad!" Makoto greeted as he let go of his mother only to repeat the embrace with his father.
"Hey, son! How's fatherhood been treating you?"
Chuckling, Makoto let go of his father before addressing his parents "It's a…challenge, for sure. Kiki keeps us both up, but it's worth it for both of us. Thanks for suggesting this Mother-Daughter day again."
Smiling, Hana replied "Hey, it's Kyoko's first Mother's Day as a mother; I figured giving a little help while having the apartment be boy-free would be a good Mother's Day gift for her."
As Makoto nodded gratefully, Shingi asked "Hey, where is Kyoko anyway?"
"Right here, Dad."
Everyone turned around to see a slightly fatigued Kyoko, still dressed in her lavender nightgown as she smiled wearily at her husband and in-laws, a nearly two-month old Kiki suckling on her exposed breast.
As Kiki cooed happily, Kyoko greeted "Hi Dad, Hi Mom. Thanks for coming."
Nodding, Hana smiled at her daughter-in-law and assured her "No worries; this is your first Mother's Day as a mother."
A teasing grin on his face, Makoto interrupted "You should have seen her when we woke up this morning; she was so awestruck that she could finally celebrate as a Mom that…OW!"
A frown on her face, Kyoko silenced her husband by pulling on the skin of his cheek and reminding him "Don't you and Dad have somewhere to be? It's Mother's Day, so don't go and embarrass me, sweetie."
"A'right, a'right, jus' leggo o mah cheek!"
Smirking victoriously, Kyoko let go of her husband, causing the man to yelp in pain before massaging his sore cheek.
Turnign her attention to her granddaughter, Hana asked "Anyway…how is Kiki?"
Looking down at her infant daughter, Kyoko smiled and replied "She's doing alright…she looks tired, though. I think it might be time for your nap soon, young lady."
Kiki let go of her mother's teat, yawning as her eyelids started to droop, causing Makoto to comment "That's probably my cue to say good-bye." Smiling, Makoto walked over and stroked his daughter's hair, cooing "Have a good day with Mommy and Baa-chan, Kiki. Daddy loves you."
Kiki yawned before her eyes finally closed, leaving Makoto to smile and hug his wife before repeating the gesture with his mother.
"Bye, honey. Bye, Mom. We'll be back before too long; you three have fun, okay?"
The two Naegi women nodded before being hugged by Shingi, who then followed his son out of the apartment, closing the door behind them.
Turning and seeing Kyoko hold in a yawn of her own, Hana suggested "Why don't you take a nap, darling? You look exhausted, and I can hold Kiki for a couple of hours while you rest."
Kyoko bit her lip; while the thought of rest did sound nice, her separation anxiety as a mother was still very much in full force.
"Are you certain? What if…"
Smiling warmly at her daughter-in-law, Hana replied "Kyoko, I've raised two babies of my own, one of them being your husband. I remember where the diapers and milk are from our first visit to see Kiki, so I'll be fine if she does get fussy. Trust me; I can tell you from experience that as a new mother, you need all the chances for rest you can get."
Reluctantly nodding, Kyoko looked down at her sleeping daughter and whispered "Mama's going to go take a nap now, Kiki. You're gonna stay with Baa-chan, so behave for her, alright? Mama loves you, Kiki."
Kyoko leaned down to kiss her daughter's hair before reluctantly handing her to Hana, who expertly cradled her in her arms. Seeing all was well, Kyoko wearily turned around and dragged herself to her and Makoto's room, closing the door behind her. Hana then walked over to the couch, gently plopping down and staring lovingly at her sleeping granddaughter.

Kyoko and Hana giggled, sitting on her bed while Kiki napped in her crib. Once a refreshed and alert Kyoko had come out of her room, in an actual shirt and skirt, she saw that Kiki was still asleep in her grandmother's arms. Seeing an opportunity, Kyoko suggested that they put Kiki down in her crib and look over Makoto's baby pictures together. A nostalgic smile on her face, Hana easily agreed, and the two were now flipping through Makoto's old baby album.
"Oh, I remember this!" Hana pointed to one, explaining "That was my first Mother's Day after Makoto was born."
Kyoko followed Hana's finger, smiling lovingly at the photo of a much younger Hana Naegi snuggling a sleeping Makoto, the little baby blowing a bubble of saliva.
Continuing to flip through the album, Kyoko's eyes settled on a photo, pointing to it and asking "Is this…?"
Smiling, Hana confirmed "Yeah; this was next year's Mother's Day, just a couple weeks before Makoto became a big brother."
Both Naegi women stared at the photo of a toddling Makoto kissing the heavily pregnant Hana's belly, trying to feel his baby sister as he closed his eyes and smiled.
Smiling warmly at the pictures of her adorable husband in his baby years, Kyoko turned to her mother-in-law and asked "Are there any more Mother's Day photos in this album?"
Nodding, Hana began "There are, but I managed to save something I think you'll enjoy even more." Seeing that her daughter-in-law's interest was now piqued, Hana withdrew a smartphone and a pair of earbuds from her pocket, explaining "I still have a family video that Shingi recorded when Makoto was four and Komaru was almost three. We can plug these earbuds in and watch it so we don't disturb Kiki."
Immediately tempted by the prospect of seeing an actual video of her husband as a child, Kyoko nodded excitedly. Hana proceeded to plug the jack in, handing Kyoko the right earbud while she inserted the left in her own ear. She then opened the videos app on her smartphone and scrolled through her library before finally tapping on one, the video expanding until it took up the entire screen before playing.

Mother's Day 2001
"Happy Mother's Day, Mommy!" Makoto and Komaru called out as they stumbled into the kitchen, in front of their mother.
Smiling, Hana turned around and crouched, lowering herself to her children's eye level before replying "Thank you!" Spotting a multicolored piece of paper in Makoto's hand, Hana sked "And what do you have there, Makoto? Is that for me?"
Beaming, Makoto nodded, holding it out and declaring "We made it for you, Mommy! We…UWAH!"
Makoto faceplanted onto the floor, his little sister sitting on his back as she chastised him "No, I made it for Mommy. I just said that you could be the one to give it to her!"
Grunting, Makoto moaned "Komaru, get off of me!"
Shaking her head, Komaru teased "Not until you confess that I was the one who made it, Onii-chan."
"No! We made it for Mommy together! It was…"
"You handing me the glue and signing your name doesn't count. Now, confess!"
"NO!"
"YES!"
"NO!"
"YES!"
Giggling at her children's antics, Hana opened the card and read to herself Happy Mother's Day to the best Mommy ever! Love, Komaru and Makoto!
Hana closed the card, happy tears falling from her face as she looked down at her still bickering children, finally crawling over to them to break them up.

Present Day
*Creak*
Hana and Kyoko's gaze averted from the video to see Makoto and Shingi looking at them curiously through the crack in the door.
Smiling at her husband and father-in-law, Kyoko asked "You boys are back already?"
Nodding, Makoto explained "It's been a couple of hours, so we thought we'd come by for a quick bite and see if you girls needed anything."
Nodding in concurrence, Shingi affirmed "Yeah…hey, what are you two watching…oh, wow! Now that's a memory!"
Makoto leaned forward, immediately blushing in embarrassment as he hissed "Mom! The baby pictures weren't enough? You had to bring the home videos too?"
Turning to smile at her son, Hana dismissed him "Oh Makoto, don't get your boxers in a twist. Before long, you'll be making some of these with Kiki! Besides, it's a good Mother's Day present for your wife, don't you think?"
"But..but I…" Makoto sighed in resignation and moaned "Oh, I give up. I'm gonna make some lunch."
The others barely registered the sound of the door closing, their attention too focused on the video playing on Hana's smartphone.

"Bye, everyone! Thanks for coming!" A now recovered Makoto called out as his parents left, closing the door behind them.
He then walked back into the bedroom, seeing his wife replaying the video that Hana had emailed her on her phone.
"You know, you really shouldn't feel so embarrassed about it, sweetie." Kyoko paused the video, looking up at her husband as she continued "It's cute, and I didn't get to know you until we were late teenagers, so it's nice to see and hear what you looked like as a kid." Looking over to the sleeping Kiki, Kyoko admitted "And it also gives me a model for how to be a good mom to our daughter."
Smiling sheepishly, Makoto sat next to her on the bed and admitted with a sigh …Yeah, I know…it's just…automatic, you know? I can't help but feel embarrassed when I see you looking at my baby pictures and family videos, even though I know better…"
Smiling sympathetically, Kyoko leaned her head on Makoto's shoulder and forgave him "It's oaky…I guess it's just part of who you are…the love of my life, and the father to our daughter…"
Smiling warmly, Makoto stroked her hair with his left hand, making Kyoko purr as he returned "And I couldn't have chosen a better woman to marry, nor a better mother to Kiki…which reminds me…" Makoto reached into his pocket with his right hand, withdrawing a singular glass tube with a preserved rose that made the glass glow with a slightly pink tint.
"Happy Mother's Day, honey!"
Gasping, Kyoko snatched it from his hands and cooed "Ohh, a Rose in Vitro! You got this for me?"
Nodding, Makoto replied "Of course…I remember how much they meant to you, and Dad and I happened to walk by a flower shop while we were out, so I thought you might like it!"
Kyoko's head slid down, slumping as she snuggled against his chest, cooing "Thank you, Makoto. It's perfect…just like you!"
Makoto smiled warmly, continuing to stoke his wife's hair. He was just about to lean down and kiss her head when Kiki's cries interrupted the moment. Before Kyoko could even think to stand up, Makoto had already risen, walking to the crib and reaching in to cradle his daughter.
Turning around, Makoto smiled and offered "Why don't you get some rest? It's Mother's Day after all, so I'll take care of Kiki while you enjoy yourself."
Seeing his wife nod gratefully and lie down on the bed, Makoto bounced Kiki in his arms, cooing "There there, Kiki. Daddy's here…Daddy…WHOA! You need a new diaper! Come on, Kiki."
As Makoto closed the door behind them, Kyoko shed her blouse and crawled under the blankets, taking a nap of her own while reflecting on how happy she was to celebrate Mother's Day as a mom in her own right.
Makoto…thanks for making me a mother! Kiki…thanks for being my daughter!
