A/N: Hey guys! Just a heads up for the set up of chapter 2, this story is set in an AU where Percy doesn't know of his identity yet. Leave your thoughts below & enjoy reading!
PERCY'S POV
"So tell me again why I have to care about some billboard with gigantic eyes and why Daisy stays with Tom even though he's a huge dick?"
Annabeth rolled her eyes at my question while I laid my chin on top of the desk. She had tutored me for the past hour yet the only thing I learned was how entertaining twirling a pencil could be.
"C'mon seaweed brain, focus. The billboard of Dr. Eckleburg is obviously a symbolism of watchful eyes and judgment of society. Tom is a huge dick but Daisy stays with him because it's all that she knows."
I leaned back into my chair and pushed my Gatsby book as far away as possible. Gods, this was torturous. Not the part about studying with Annabeth but the whole book analysis part.
"So what are you scribbling?" I peeked at the sketchbook she had open along with her laptop. Besides answering my questions every once in a while and assigning me practice questions, she had been sketching designs based on images on her laptop.
"Oh, this? It's nothing, I just like to sketch my own drawings of buildings and monuments I like."
She put down her pencil and tucked a few strands of her hair behind her ear like she did whenever she got nervous.
Her sketches were amazing. They captured the fine details and edges of the Parthenon. A 3-D drawing of the monument seemed to bring it to life. Other familiar buildings seemed to pale in comparison.
"This is awesome Annabeth. You'd seriously be an amazing architect. I'd totally hire you to build my future house," I told her.
She gave a small laugh that made me smile back in return.
"Yeah sure, whatever you say. Well, I think we're done for today. We stayed after school long enough, let's head outside."
I nodded in agreement. Leaving school sounded good right about now. I grabbed my backpack and headed down to the first floor with Annabeth. We walked down in comfortable silence until she suddenly froze. The hairs on my arm stood up. I couldn't tell you what was wrong. But something felt very wrong.
"Percy, go hide right now and stay down."
I'm not going to lie to you. I wasn't just borderline confused. I was death's day confused. Before I could ask her something intelligent like why, she grabbed her cap from her bag and a sharp tool. Woah, she was lucky she never got caught with that thing. I squinted to see it was a sheathed bronze knife.
"Annabeth, what is goi-"
And then she was gone. Disappeared. What in the world was happening? Before I could manage to go to a corner and I don't know, listen to her… something appeared in front of me that froze me in my place. A monster that seemed to jump out of Greek myth book. Gods, I was really starting to think I should've paid more attention in my classes. Well, whatever it was, it had the body of a serpent but attached to it were ram-like horns.
"I am Cerastessss, give me the boy," it hissed.
I watched in amazement as Annabeth suddenly materialized and stabbed her knife into the neck of the monster. It hissed in anger. I'm guessing the knife had missed a crucial part or only skinned the skin of the serpent. In its anger, he roared in outrage and shook Annabeth's body off.
"Percy! Use the sword," Mr. Brunner, my Greek myth teacher yelled.
He emerged from what seemed like thin air and tossed me a pen. Now call me crazy but this was no sword.
"Click it now! It's made of celestial bronze, it can kill it."
Suddenly it made sense. I'd always sensed something off with Mr. Brunner. I did as he said and suddenly a sword appeared in my hands.
"Woah, woah, woah."
The sword fit perfectly in my hand and felt balanced despite it being the first time I had held it.
I looked to where Annabeth was. Her cap had fallen away and lay several feet away from her. She was gripping on to the knife but it seemed minuscule compared to the monster that was dangerously close to her.
"HEY UGLY!" I shouted.
I succeeded in distracting its attention but I had no idea how to defend myself properly. The monster was seething, approaching me fast.
"Persssseus Jackson, the master summons you."
He slithered and pointed his horns towards me. I sidestepped him but he managed to change direction fast despite having no limbs. I attempted to jab him but he only shoved me aside into the wall. I landed with an "oof" and my body definitely felt like it had cracked a few bones but I quickly got up before I became dinner.
This time I grabbed my sword tighter in my hands and feigned jabbing straight, taking a quick step to the left after. As he shifted his direction fast, I turned my sword and stabbed him straight underneath his horns. He wailed in pain before disappearing into ashes.
Adrenaline pumped through my veins. What the hell had just happened. Annabeth walked towards me, a strange look in her eye while thought to himself.
"Percy, how did you do that?" Annabeth said.
I shook my head. "How about first you guys explain to me what in god's name just happened?"
A/N: Uh-oh looks like the seaweed brain here is curious. It's a good thing Annabeth Chase always has answers to his questions... right? I want to do a chapter in Annabeth's POV soon but I have a lot of fun writing Percy. Until next time! R&R!
