The Wicked Day

'In a land of myth and a time of magic, the destiny of a great kingdom rests on the shoulders of a young man. His name: Merlin,' Kilgharrah starts.

'I'm pretty sure that Kilgharrah has never said that to me,' Merlin said.

'Unless he lands in front of human travellers and tells stories of the mighty Emrys,' laughed Gwaine.

That day the square is a hive of activity. A caravan of colourful carts is pulled into the main square of Camelot's courtyard where it is unloaded by acrobats, dancers, jugglers, strong men, and jesters. An acrobat back flips into her partner's arms. Jugglers practice their routine, sending batons high into the air. Merlin and Arthur look down into the Main Square from Arthur's chambers. Merlin seems impressed, but Arthur does not.

'Looks like quite the party,' laughed Gwaine.

'And will probably bring an assassin or sorcerer,' Merlin said darkly. 'What all your feasts there seems to be someone trying to kill you!'

'Oh! Did you see that?' Merlin laughs.

'You're enjoying yourself considering that all you're going to be doing is pouring drinks,' snorted Arthur.

'I'll still be able to see the entertainment,' Merlin retorted. 'Which is more than most.'

Arthur joins Merlin at the window, 'it's a man throwing sticks in the air,' Arthur said dismissively turning away from the window.

Merlin closes the window, 'what's wrong?' Merlin asks Arthur, who is at his desk with parchment in his hands. Merlin's words cause Arthur to pull a face. 'It's your birthday. A huge feast is being held in your honour. You've got dancers, jugglers and acrobats to entertain you,' Merlin gestures out of the window as Arthur drops his parchment and the two walk to the bed. 'It must be a terrible burden,' Merlin lowers his voice.

'Perhaps I'm less easily impressed than you,' suggested Arthur.

'Of course you are I wasn't brought up with a feast for my birthday,' snorted Merlin.

'I'm really looking forward to it,' Merlin said.

'Because you have the mind of a child,' Arthur said as he heads out.

Merlin stops, 'and yet I'm still more intelligent than you,' Merlin mutters to himself.

Arthur doesn't look round as he calls out... 'I heard that.'

'You were meant to,' Merlin said with a grin.

Merlin grins and exits.

Two acrobats have set up a circular board, divided into brightly coloured segments. The Gleeman passes through the Banquet Hall, casting a critical eye over the preparations, checking everything is as it should be. He hears a sound and looks round to see objects flying out of a deep, dark trunk.

'You have misplaced something Geldred?' asked the Gleeman.

A head appears, peering out over the rim of the trunk, 'our special gift to the Prince. I cannot find it anywhere.'

'Somehow I don't think that your "gift" is going to be pleasant,' Merlin muttered.

Geldred starts to search again... 'Geldred...'

The Gleeman fixes him with a piercing stare. He pulls slim box from his tunic.

'I took the liberty of ensuring their safe passage myself,' The Gleeman opens the box to reveal three sharp throwing daggers.

Merlin groaned, 'I knew it.'

'It could just be part of the entertainment,' suggested Gwaine. 'I've seen lots of knife shows in the five kingdoms.'

'You do know Arthur?' asked Merlin.

'We must make sure this is a celebration the young Prince will never forget,' the Gleeman said.

'See,' Merlin said frustrated.

The Gleeman grasps one of the knives by the tip of the knife. He raises it glaring at the board and biting his lip in intense concentration. The gleeman then throws said knife through the air. It pierces the centre of the board with terrifying precision.

The wall's of Camelot appear in the middle of the day. In Uther's chambers Uther appears weak and withdrawn sitting in his chair a dark velvet blanket draped over his shoulders. Arthur is seated by his father's side shoulders drooped.

'Is he ever going to get better?' sighed Arthur heavily.

'The Court discussed the annual levy this morning. The council has suggested we raise it, but I feel the people are already overburdened-'Arthur tells his father.

Uther interrupts, 'we should not talk about matters of court today.'

Merlin snorted, 'Uther is more enthusiatic about your birthday than you are!'

Arthur is surprised by Uther's response causing him to stop what he was saying. Uther fixes Arthur with an emotional look that only serve to male Arthur increasingly concerned about his father's welfare.

'Father?' Arthur asks fixing Uther with a serious look.

Uther smiles softly, 'you think I would ever forget that today is the anniversary of your birth?' Uther questions.

Arthur looks both relieved and touched by his father's sentiment.

Uther leans forward, 'I take it there are plans for suitable celebrations this evening?' Uther although still looking down does look up at Arthur a little.

'Not that Arthur cares,' snorted Merlin.

'A feast,' Arthur said sounding surprised at the sudden display of interest that Uther was showing him, 'and, erm, some entertainment. I'll tell you all about it tomorrow.'

'Aren't you going to invite your father to your party?' questioned Hunith.

Arthur blinked, 'I doubt he'd be well enough.'

Gaius shook his head, 'an event like this celebrating the one think Uther has left in the world might revitalise the King. Just so long as he doesn't tire himself up.'

Emrys nodded gravely, 'that's what Gaius thought…' falling silent soon after a pensieve expression on his face.

'Nonsense. You think I would miss my son's anniversary?' Uther demands.

Arthur's surprised and touched at Uther's sudden display of emotion. Arthur gives a short, surprised, pleased laugh. Uther gives his son a small smile.

'He really gets better,' murmured Arthur.

The Banquet Hall is packed. Knights and courtiers are tucking into a feast. The Hall is filled with entertainment... Everyone's enjoying the show, wowed by the skills of the performers. Arthur takes in Uther smiling and catches his father's eye to which Uther raises his goblet and Arthur returns the gesture with a smile thrilled to see his father in such good spirits.

In the midst of the performers, stands The Gleeman. He bows at the end of the act. All eyes focus on The Gleeman as a hush descends over the whole Banquet Hall. The Gleeman looks out over the Hall.

'I require a volunteer...' the Gleeman calls.

Merlin groaned, 'Arthur for goodness sake don't volunteer.'

'Its expected of me,' Arthur said grimly, 'as it is my birthday.'

The Gleeman's steps forward and sets his eyes on Arthur. Arthur and Uther are drinking and smiling together. As the gleeman steps forward Arthur puts his goblet of wine down and swallows whilst his father continues to drink.

'Prince Arthur. What better or more fitting occasion for you to demonstrate your legendary bravery?' asked the Gleeman.

'Preferably not when your about to be assassinated,' muttered Merlin.

Arthur's caught out, put on the spot. Arthur looks around and then at his father.

'Do you accept the challenge?' the gleeman asks.

'Of course, he will,' muttered Merlin. 'The gleeman has tied the "challenge" with his legendary bravery. Arthur's pride will not allow him to do anything else.'

Arthur feels the eyes of the courtiers and knights awaiting his decision. Arthur looks around at his assembled people. Then Arthur looks at his father. Arthur claps his father on the shoulder and then stands.

'Of course,' Arthur said.

Gwen sighed, 'I wish you were wrong.'

'So do I,' Merlin said grimly.

'You really do know him well,' Hunith smiled softly.

'Far better than I know him,' Arthur said sadly. 'I thought I knew you.'

'So do I,' Merlin admitted with a bitter smile.

Arthur holds his arms out and has a nervous laugh. There's a round of applause as Arthur makes his way through the Hall whilst the gleeman stares darkly before turning around to the other performers. Merlin intercepts Arthur as Arthur is taking off his cloak.

'Is this safe...?' Merlin asked.

'Did you know?' asked Arthur asked.

Emrys shook his head, 'no but by this point I had protected you from so many assassination attempts that I had learnt to view strangers being interested with you with some distrust.'

'Even the entertainment at my own party,' Arthur raised an eyebrow.

'Well I was right,' Merlin said darkly. 'Or will be in any case.'

'It's knife throwing, Merlin. Of course it's not safe. I could hardly refuse his challenge,' Arthur said.

'Your pride,' sighed Gwen.

Uther watches on with an eager grin at the show. Arthur sees that the eyes of the entire room are upon them and takes off his cloak and jacket, giving them to Merlin, making an excuse to cover the true nature of their exchange. Arthur takes the coat and jacket returning to his place.

Arthur heads over to the circular board where The Gleeman waits for him. Arthur smiles at the crowd, reassuring. Arthur places himself against the board. The Gleeman and Geldred strap Arthur's ankles and wrists to the restraints on the board. Arthur shoots a slightly nervous glance at The Gleeman.

'Do not fear, my Lord. I never miss my target,' the Gleeman said.

'Somehow that doesn't reassure me,' Arthur said darkly.

'It shouldn't considering you're the target,' Merlin muttered.

'Good. Glad to hear it,' Arthur said.

The Gleeman pulls out an apple and turns to Arthur, 'may I?'

'What?' Arrthur asked.

Arthur is not given a chance object to the Gleeman's question of permission. Or for that matter give his permission. The Gleeman places the apple in Arthur's mouth taking Arthur's silence for permission.

'How dare he?' Arthur said furiously. 'Who does he think I am? I am the crown prince of Camelot! He can't just stuff me like a boar!'

'Arthur, he wants to kill you. I doubt that he cares overly about humiliating you,' Merlin pointed out grimly.

The Gleeman nods to Geldred. Geldred gives the wheel a push and it starts to spin. The court makes "ooh" sounds at Arthur's predicament. Arthur spins on the board. It makes him feel dizzy, and a little nauseous.

Another dwarf presents the case of knives to The Gleeman. The Gleeman holds the blade up for the crowd to see. Without even stopping to take aim, The Gleeman suddenly turns and throws the knife at Arthur.

'ARTHUR!' cried out Gwen and Merlin at the same time.

It thuds into the board, centimeters from Arthur's face. A huge gasp goes up, followed by a round of applause. As he spins, Arthur eyes the knife warily. Uther is very impressed. Gwen lets out a breath and does a facepalm.

The Gleeman takes the next knife from the case. The tension builds, and suddenly The Gleeman throws the knife. It flies through the air and thuds into the board on the other side of Arthur's head to another round of applause.

The Gleeman takes the final knife from the case. Gwen closes her eyes and turns her head away for a moment in relief. Uther applauds gleefully. The Gleeman waves the final knife at Uther. Uther nods permission for him to throw it.

Gwen bites her nails and looks nervously toward Arthur praying for the "entertainment" to be over. Arthur's eyes go wide as The Gleeman prepares to throw the final knife. Tension builds as he takes aim.

Merlin looks on poised, ready to intervene magically should it be needed. Time slows down as The Gleeman throws the knife. It spins through the air in slow motion. The sound of the blade slice into something not wood and the crowd gasps and holds its breath for a moment.

'ARTHUR!' cired out Merlin and Gwen.

The wheel slows to a stop and we see the knife stuck straight into the apple. The hall erupts in applause. Arthur opens his eyes. Gwen breathes a huge sigh of relief and joins the applause. Arthur sighs in relief as well.

'Thank the gods,' murmured Gwen.

'Its not over yet,' Merlin said grimly. 'He'll try again.'

The Gleeman takes a bow and a circus man helps Arthur down from the Wheel of Death. Arthur tosses the apple and catches it. Arthur then shrugs back into his jacket with Merlin's help who had come back up to his friend and master.

'See, Merlin? Nothing to worry about,' Arthur said.

'Nothing except you had knives thrown at you by someone intending to kill you,' Merlin pointed out.

'Yes, but you didn't know that,' Arthur retorted.

Arthur takes a bite of the apple. Merlin chuckles in relief as Arthur saunters off eating the apple that had a dagger through it only seconds ago. The Gleeman meanwhile is having a quiet word with Geldred.

'In a few hours, the sedative on the apple will begin to take effect,' the gleeman says.

'I told you it wasn't over,' Merlin said darkly. 'Its never over!'

'The Prince will be defenceless,' the gleeman said.

'No he's not,' Merlin said sharply.

'Then we will strike,' the gleeman said.

'Why didn't they just kill me when he was on the Wheel of Death and made it look like an accident?' asked Arthur.

'Likely, the feared that they would have been executed by Uther even if it had been an accident,' Gaius said. 'They must have wanted to do it somewhere with no witnesses or evidence.'

The Gleeman and Geldred turn slightly to watch Arthur taking a drink of wine from his goblet in front of his table. He his still chewing the mouthful of drugged apple to loud cheers from the gathered courtiers. Arthur celebrates with his knights.

The door to Arthur's chambers flies open. Arthur staggers in closely followed by Merlin. The sedative is obviously starting to take effect. Arthur is already very drowsy and unsteady on his feet.

'Slow acting sedative,' Gaius said grimly.

'Magical?'asked Arthur.

'Maybe, maybe not,' Gaius said. 'I would have to inspect the sedative before I could say for sure. The symptons do not alone give enough information to say for sure.'

'You're telling me you weren't even a little bit scared?' asked Merlin.

''Course he was,' snorted Gwaine.

'Not that he'd ever admit it,' Merlin muttered.

'Of course I wasn't. I am a warrior. You learn to control your fear. To channel it...'

Arthur's sentence trails off. Arthur then runs into a column and staggers back. Merlin is forced to catch his master and stops him from falling over. Athur rights himself and continues walking as though nothing happened.

'Weren't you at all concerned that I was walking into columns?' demanded Arthur.

'I thought you had a bit too much wine,' Emrys replied.

'Wouldn't be the first time you ended like that after a party,' muttered Merlin.

'You looked scared...' Merlin muttered.

'I was not scared,' snapped Arthur.

'How do you know?' asked Merlin. 'It hasn't happened yet!'

'Merlin,' growled Arthur.

'Someone's feeling grouchy,' grinned Merlin.

'My future self is about to be assassinated,' snapped Arthur.

'I wouldn't let that happen,' Merlin said stubbornly. 'Its my destiny to protect you!'

Arthur starts to undress, 'it's good to see my father enjoying himself.' A worrying thought occurs to the prince, 'he looked a little quiet towards the end, though. Perhaps I should go and see him.'

'Arthur, your not wearing any trousers,' Merlin said darkly. 'And can barely stand up.'

'Are you sure that's a good idea? You can barely stand up,' Merlin pointed out.

'Are you saying I'm drunk?' asked Arthur.

'Drugged, not drunk,' Merlin said grimly.

'You didn't know that,' Arthur pointed out.

'I thought you were drunk,' Emrys admitted.

'No, I'm just saying I don't think you should be wandering around the palace,' Merlin said diplomatically.

'Its best not to challenge you when your drunk,' Emrys said calmly.

'And why is that?' asked Arthur.

'You're not wearing any trousers,' Merlin said.

'You don't change much, do you Merlin,' Gwaine said amused.

Arthur looks down and sees that he is indeed not wearing trousers and looking back at Merlin, 'good point,' Arthur says and hitches up his trousers on his way out the door.

In the Phoenix Corridor Arthur lets out an enormous yawn. The prince is clearly struggling to keep his eyes open as he passes the two guards outside the doors to Uther's chambers. The Gleeman watches Arthur disappear round the corner as Arthur heads inside.

Merlin groaned, 'oh no.'

Uther sits in his chair, sleeping peacefully. Arthur takes the goblet from his hand and puts it on the table. He sinks into a chair. He fights the tiredness he feels sweeping over him, but it's a losing battle.

Outside in the phoenix corridor the Gleeman steps over the two guards that he just took out and draws one of their swords before heading inside to where Arthur and the King are sleeping.

Arthur is drifting into sleep, struggling to focus on Uther. His head lolls. Behind Arthur, we see The Gleeman slip into the room. Arthur's oblivious... The Gleeman creeps toward Arthur, sword drawn. Arthur catches a glimpse of The Gleeman in the wine pitcher. Arthur draws his sword and parries the blow as The Gleeman strikes. Arthur spills out of the chair and staggers backwards. He's sleepy and disorientated, tries to call out, but his voice is weak...

'Guards...! Guards!' Arthur cries out.

The Gleeman attacks. Arthur barely manages to fight off the attack. His sword is knocked out of his hand and thrown across the room. Arthur collapses to his knees. The Gleeman stands over Arthur.

'Goodbye, Arthur Pendragon,' the Gleeman says.

The Gleeman raises his sword, ready to strike. Arthur is powerless, fears this is the end. But as The Gleeman strikes, the blow is blocked by a sword. Arthur and The Gleeman sees Uther standing there, Arthur's sword in his hand.

'Father,' breathed Arthur feeling a smile grow on his face.

'It will take more than a coward like you to kill my son,' Uther declared.

'Of course, Uther would be enough there for you,' Hunith smiled kindly.

The Gleeman strikes. Uther blocks the blow. They trade a series of ferocious blows. But The Gleeman is skilled and Uther rusty. Uther is beaten back, and only narrowly avoids being killed. Arthur tries to get to his feet to go to Uther's aid, but he's too drowsy, collapses back on the floor. Uther attacks, and again The Gleeman easily deflects the blows. He's cruelly toying with Uther, taunting him.

'He just toying with him,' growled Arthur angrily.

'Have you anything to say to your son before I kill him?' taunted the gleeman.

Uther looks at Arthur, kneeling, helpless. Uther's paternal instincts kick in. He attacks with a new ferocity, taking The Gleeman by surprise. Uther rains blow after blow down on The Gleeman, forcing him back. The Gleeman's sword is knocked from his hand. Uther prepares to deliver a fatal blow. The Gleeman suddenly draws a knife, lunges at Uther. Uther thrusts his sword. Arthur looks on, hugely relieved. But Uther doesn't respond. He looks weak and confused. His legs buckle.

'Father!' cried Arthur. 'Please tell me he doesn't die!'

Emry looks down but does not say anything causing Arthur's hope to crumble.

'Father?' Arthur whispers.

Arthur realises something is very wrong. Arthur catches Uther as he sinks to the floor by the bed. Arthur's horrified to see blood staining Uther's robes. Both Arthur and Uther have to fight to stay conscious.

'No... Guards!... I'll go get help...' Arthur mumbles goes to stand.

'Stay with me,' Uther begs.

'I'm here, Father,' whispers Arthur. 'Guards! Someone! We need help!' Arthur shouts.

'Someone had to have heard,' Arthur said desperately.

'You really need better guards,' Merlin muttered.

'And how many times have you taken advantage of that?' demanded Arthur.

'Precisely why I know that the guards really need to be better trained,' Merlin said. 'Or replaced.'

'What with sorcerers and sorcery?' demanded Arthur.

'That's not a wholy bad idea,' Merlin said. 'There's wards for one which could be used to keep unwanted guests out at least. Add in a half-decent sorcerer who would be better at recogising and responding to threats. Never mind have some immunity to some spells and potions.'

'It is my time,' Uther whispered weakly.

'No it's not,' Arthur shouted. 'It can't be,' Arthur said continuing to watch the TV seeminly unable to tear his eyes away from the unfolding disaster.

'No... You can't die,' Arthur told his father as if that would make any difference.

'I know you will make me proud,' Uther continued in a whisper, 'as you always have. You will be a great King,' Uther said eyelids fluttering as he struggled to keep his eyes open.

'You will,' agreed Merlin confidentaly.

'I'm not ready,' Arthur shook his head in desperate denials.

'Yes you are,' Merlin said sharply.

'You- you've been ready for some time, Arthur,' looks proudly at his son.

'He's right, you know,' Merlin said quietly. 'I've known that for a long time even if you can't yet see it.

Arthur shook his head desperately, 'no. I need you.'

'I know I've not been a...a good father. I put my duty to Camelot first. I'm sorry,' whispered Uther.

Arthur shook his head in denial, 'don't say that.'

Uther grips Arthur's hand with all his remaining strength, 'but know this one thing. I always loved you,' Uther's eyes slowly close as he loses consciousness.

Arthur sat up suddenly wishing that Uther had said some of the things he was saying in his last moments before. Instead of making Arthur feel that he was never good enough. That Uther always loved Morgana than he did Arthur. Yet in his final momdents he confessed his true feelings.

'He always did love you,' Gaius said kindly as though reading Arthur's emotions. 'Your father has never been able to properly express his emotions since your mother died.'

'No... Father... Father!' Arthur's begs horrifed but barely able to focus. 'No.'

The next morning sun rises over Camelot ignorant or uncaring of the tragedy that took place just hours ago. A bird flies across the sky.

In Uther's chambers Gaius is tending to Uther. Arthur and Gwen watch as the physician tends to ailing king who is unconscious, very weak and close to death. Arthur fixes Gaius with a desperate look as they walk away from the king.

'Gaius. Can you treat him?' Arthur asks quietly.

'The blade has touched his heart. He's bleeding inside,' Gaius informs the prince in a whisper.

'There must be something,' Arthur shakes his head in desperation. 'There must be something you can do. Please, Gaius.'

'If he's alive there must be something you can do,' Arthur said urgently.

'Sometimes there's nothing that can be done but make the patient comfortable,' Gaius said sadly.

'What about magic?' asked Arthur hesitantly.

Emrys sighed heavily, 'magic does not hold all the answers.'

'But is there magic that could heal him?' demanded Arthur angrily of the three magic users or was that two.

'Don't look at me,' Merlin said. 'I've never been great at Healing magic.'

'There is magic that could save him,' Emrys finally admitted.

'However, finding a magic user willing to save Uther Pendragon who is powerful and skilled enough to do so is the hard part,' Gaius said gravely.

Gaius shakes his head, 'it is just a matter of time, I'm afraid. I'm sorry, Arthur.'

Arthur slumps in his seat revealing his pain, grief and fear at what had happened despite knowing that this was in the future. Knowing that Uther was still alive and well when they got back. because Arthur still loved Uther despite all that had happened.

'Arthur,' Gwen said gently. 'We know now. We can prepare and stop the Gleeson from ever coming to Camelot. We can stop this from ever happening.'

Arthur nodded, 'yes, of course.'

Arthur staring at his father as Merlin stands watching his friend and employer. Arthur can't accept that no matter what Gaius may say. Arthur stares at Uther, struggling to accept that his father is going to die.

In the council chambers Sir Leon and Agravaine are reporting to Arthur. Arthur who has his arms crossed across his chest just stares blankly, traumatised and grief struck by the news his father is going to die.

'We traced the assassin to the town of Wenham. It's in Odin's land. It seems he hired him to kill you to avenge the death of his son,' Agravaine inform his nephew.

Arthur nods minutely but barely responds to his uncle as he takes this in.

'We believe he had an accomplice among the performers, but he has fled the city. We have doubled the guard, should there be another attempt on your life,' Leon tells him.

Again, Arthur barely responds uncaring of what happens to him. Agravaine takes in Arthur's despondent mood. Agravaine takes a step forward and places a comforting hand on Arthur's shoulder.

'Everyone's thoughts are with you, Arthur. But, er, if there's anything I can do,' Agravaine says consolingly.

'Sure it is,' Arthur said bitterly. 'Not like you weren't celebrating father's death!'

'Your support means a great deal to me. Thank you,' Arthur said honestly.

Agravine smiles slightly and bows respectfully to the young prince. Then Agravaine and Sir Leon head out, passing Merlin as he enters the council chambers. Arthur immediately responds to Merlin's arrival.

'What news of my father?' Arthur asks.

'There is no change,' Merlin says gently.

Arthur looks around angrily and snaps, 'well, why isn't Gaius doing something, then?'

'There's nothing that can be done,' Merlin said softly.

'Because there is nothing he can do,' Merlin says treading softly.

'How did you deal with it?' asked Arthur quietly. 'Grieving for your father and not even able to express it.'

'Because I had to,' Merlin said. 'Doing anything less would mean my head.'

Arthur makes a gesture of apology towards Merlin. Arthur knows that what Merlin says is true and that is what pains him.

That night Agravaine rides through the forest.

Agravaine bursts through the door into Morgana's hut taking Morgana by surprise. Morgana instinctively spins, drawing a dagger and stands poised, ready to plunge it into Agravaine. Morgana recognises her ally and lowers the dagger.

Merlin sighed sadly, 'oh Morgana. She's got worse.'

'The sacrifice of Morgause did not help her issues at all,' Emrys said gravely.

'No they wouldn't have,' agreed Gaius.

'Now, is that any way to greet an old friend...?' asked Agravaine a sly smile appearing on his face.

Morgana lowers the dagger, 'I wasn't expecting you today.'

'He just had to report on my father's …' Arthur couldn't complete his bitter sentence.

'I had to see you. I bring good news. Better than we could have hoped for,' Agravaine said.

'Better!' Arthur said angrily.

'What is it?' asked Morgana curiously moving closer to her co-conspirator.

'Uther has been mortally wounded. He's on his deathbed. Gaius says he only has days to live,' Agravaine says gleefully.

'Bastard,' Merlin muttered. 'I don't like Uther but I will never take joy in another's death – friend or foe.'

Morgana smiles, 'I hope the image of my face haunts him.'

'Has done since you betrayed him,' Arthur said painfully.

A sudden thought occurred to Morgana, 'how is Arthur?'

'Devastated. Poor boy can't think straight,' Agravaine said.

Morgana smiles at this news, 'then we must strike while he' s vulnerable.'

'She used to be so compassionate,' Merlin murmured regretfully.

'It's not your fault,' Arthur said. 'Yes what you did was abhorrent. Yes what father has done is wrong. But neither of you made her kill innocents.'

Morgana turns, but Agravaine grabs her arm, 'when Uther dies, the Kingdom will be weak. Morgana looks pointedly down at her arm in his grabs and Agravaine lets go, 'we must choose our moments carefully. Who knows what opportunities the coming weeks will hold,' Agravaine says sharing a smile with Morgana.

Arthur holds a vigil beside Uther's bed. He just stands there, staring at Uther intensely. Gwen crosses over to the bed. She places the tray down on the end of the bed and changes the dressing on Uther's wound through the following.

'I appreciate your kindness, everything you're doing for him,' Arthur said.

'Not for him,' Gwen admitted. 'Never for him. I do it for you.'

'I do it for you,' Gwen said.

'Look Gwen sounds like herself,' Gwaine said.

'Of course I do,' Gwen rolled her eyes.

Arthur's touched which tips him over the edge. He looks away from Gwen. She is pained to see his hurt and goes to the man she loves.

'Oh, Arthur,' Arthur sighs.

'I can't watch him die...There's still so much I want to say to him... He cannot die,' Arthur says running a hand through his hair.

'Death comes to us all,' Emrys said half wistfully and half bitterly. 'It is the one thing that unites us all.'

'Except you,' Gwen said softly.

'Except me,' agreed Emrys.

'That must have been hard,' Arthur said.

'Yes,' Emrys agreed.

'How did you cope?'asked Merlin quietly.

'With my young students,' smiled Emrys. 'Only the brightness of youth can counteract the harshness of time.'

'Err, right,' Arthur said noncomprehending.

Arthur exits his father's chambers leaving Gwen deeply concerned for him staring after the man she loved.

The townspeople hold a candle-lit vigil in the Main Square. Meanwhile in Arthur's chambers Merlin stands at the window, staring down at them. Merlin turns suddenly on appearing the sound of the door. Arthur enters his chambers crosses over stand beside Merlin and looks out of the window.

'He's not dead yet,' Arthur said sharply.

'Doesn't mean that the people won't grieve knowing that he will be soon,' Merlin said quietly.

'What's going on?' Arthur demanded.

'It's a vigil for your Father. The people wish to share their grief,' Merlin said quietly.

Arthur frowns, unsettled, 'why are they behaving like he's already dead when there's still life in his body?'

'They're preparing themselves for the worst,' Merlin says watching the King sadly.

Arthur steels himself, 'they can give up hope, but I won't.'

Merlin nods, 'I know. It's hard to accept, and I wish it wasn't so.'

'Do you?' demanded Arthur. 'I know you hate him!'

'Yes,' agreed Merlin quietly. 'But I also know how much losing him would cause you to suffer! And I never want you to suffer so no I do not wish Uther dead nor will I celebrate when he does die because of you!'

'There really is nothing that can be done,' Merlin says.

Arthur looks thoughtful, then, 'there is a way to heal my father.'

'How?' asked Merlin quietly.

'With magic,' Arthur says fixing Merlin with a poignant look.

Merlin's stunned as he takes this in.

'Why is it only in times of desperation do you Pendragons turn to magic?' asked Merlin with a sigh.

In Gaius' chambers Merlin and Merlin has just informed Gaius of Arthur's plan. Gaius looks concerned.

'Arthur's planning on using magic?' Gaius asks in quiet shock.

'He's desperate,' Gwen said softly taking Arthur's hand in hers.

'He's desperate. He knows it's his only hope of healing Uther,' Merlin explains.

Gaius fixes Merlin with a look, 'Merlin, please tell me you're not going to do this.'

'You do know Merlin don't you,' Gwaine said shaking his head.

'Merlin would do anything to help anyone,' Gwen agreed.

'Even saving the life of the one who would see you dead?' asked Arthur sharply.

'Yes,' Merlin said. 'You are my best friend and the only chance anyone has is if you accept magic.'

'I'd be lying if I said 'no',' Merlin admitted.

Gaius unsurpised shakes his head, 'you can't risk exposing yourself like this.'

'Yes Merlin don't expose yourslef,' snickered Gwaine.

Merlin rolled his eyes, 'shut up Gwaine.'

'It's too dangerous,' Gaius warns his ward urgently.

'Arthur didn't recognise me last time when I was eighty years old. There's no reason why he should this time,' Merlin said.

'Honestly Merlin,' snorted Arthur. 'If you don't watch it the old man guise is going to be the only thing people remember.'

Emrys burst out laughing at this comment.

'Need I remind you the last time you used an ageing spell, you nearly had yourself burnt at the stake,' Gaius reminded his ward.

'It's worth the risk,' Merlin said resolutely.

'Do you think Uther is going to thank you for healing him with magic? He's more likely to have you hanged, Gaius said looking more and more alarmed.

'He's right you know,' Arthur sighed sadly.

'I know,' Merlin said sharply. 'I know Uther will never change his mind but that does not mean I will just let my best friend's father die!'

'Uther will never change his attitude towards magic,' Merlin said unknowingly echoing his past self. 'I know that. But if Arthur allows it to be used to heal his father, his attitude will be changed forever. He will see that magic can be a force for good.'

'You of all people should know that the use of powerful magic is fraught with danger,' Gaius says looking slightly more sympathetic.

'But there's a chance it will work,' Arthur said.

'A chance,' agreed Gaius reluctantly.

'If it works, I won't have to hide any more,' Merlin said voice deep with emotion.

'That's all I ever wanted,' Merlin said quietly. 'To be accepted for me.'

'I know,' Arthur said quietly.

'And if it doesn't?' Gaius demanded causing a silence.

'Then it could you could die and seal my hatred against magic forever,' Arthur said.

'But if you found out later that I had the power to save your father and didn't even try you would never forgive me,' Merlin said.

'No I wouldn't,' agreed Arthur sighing.

'Sometimes there are no good options,' Emry said, 'but you still have to choose.'

'I can't stand by and watch you do this Merlin,' Gaius said shaking his head.

'I don't think you have any choice in the matter,' Arthur snorted. 'When Merlin gets something into his head nothing can stop him.'

'He's always been like that,' sighed Hunith. 'Add his gifts into the package I'm surprised there was a tree left standing in Ealdor with him around.'

'OI!' Merlin said angrily.

'Well, don't try and stop me, because...you can't,' Merlin said fixing Gaius with a poignant look.

'You're playing a dangerous game, Merlin,' Gaius warns.

'Have been since I entered Camelot,' Merlin said gravely. 'Since I was born really.'

'I've been playing a dangerous game since the first time I set foot in Camelot. Maybe this is my chance to change that,' Merlin suggested.

Merlin enters Arthur's chambers where he sees the young Prince Regent is standing waiting impatiently. Arthur looks up as he hears Merlin approach.

'Well?' Arthurs demands striding over to Merlin 'What did Gaius say? Did he have any information?'

'He didn't know much. But he has heard of a sorcerer. An old man. He lives in the Forest of Glaestig. Gaius thinks he may be able to help you,' Merlin informs Arthur.

'Will he lead me to him?' asked Arthur.

'I certainly will not!' Gaius said. 'I may not want the King dead but I will not help hang Merlin!'

'No, he's told me all that he knows. We will have to find him ourselves,' Merlin says.

'In other words Gaius wants no part in this,' Merlin muttered.

'I certainly do not,' agreed Gaius.

'If you were me, it was your father, would you use magic to save his life?' asks Athur quietly.

'Yes,' Merlin said sharply.

Merlin gives Arthur a sharp look, 'yes, I would. I would do whatever it took.

Arthur's persuaded, 'prepare the horses. Gather supplies. We ride at first light.'

Merlin goes to the door and leaves Arthur alone to contemplate his decision staring after his friend.

In Agravaine's chambers Agravaine is reading a letter when the door opens and Arthur enters.

'Your going to tell him,' groaned Merlin groaned.

'Arthur is still ignorant of Agravaine's intentions,' Emrys pointed out.

'But I will eventually figure it out?' Arthur asked to which he received no reply.

'Arthur,' Agravaine says standing up. 'What news of your father's health?'

'No improvement, I'm afraid,' Arthur said and then hesitates, unsure how to express what he needs to say.

Agravaine detects Arthur's hesitation, 'something's on your mind.'

'Of course it is,' snorted Merlin.

'I didn't want to go behind your back,' Arthur said moving closer to his Uncle. 'I have decided to use magic to heal my father.'

'That will not be well received,' Merlin said.

'I figured that out for myself,' Arthur said bitterly.

Agravaine's shocked,'I would strongly advise against such a course of action.'

'Of course you would,' muttered Merlin muttered mutinously.

'There is no other way,' Arthur said calmly.

Agravaine nears his newphew, 'magic caused your mother's death, Arthur,' Arthur says harshly.

'That bastard,' hissed Merlin. 'Using your mother – his sister – to manipulate you!'

'If you respect her memory, you cannot do this,' Agravaine said pleadinlgy.

'Ygraine would not wish for Uther's death,' Gaius said softly.

Arthur's moved by the argument, 'would you see my father die?'

'Of course he would,' Merlin said bitterly.

'Perhaps it is his time,' Agravaine said careful not to reveal his true loyalties.

'Look, I know we've both suffered because of magic, but I can't stand by and let my father die,' Arthur said refusing to accept Agravaine's words. 'My mind's made up.'

Merlin and Arthur ride up to a hut off the path to the same charcoal maker's hut Merlin and Lancelot stayed in after Merlin was healed. Arthur and Merlin dismount from their horses. Arthur eyes the hut curiously.]

'Are you sure this is the right place? It looks like a charcoal maker's hut,' Arthur says tying up his horse.

'Well I had to use somewhere unconnected to me to meet you in,' Emrys said defensively.

'The old man can hardly make a living practising magic,' Merlin pointed out.

'He has a point,' Leon admitted.

'I think that a lot of sorcerers are in the charcoal business,' Merlin gestures with his hands towards the hut.

Gwen giggled, 'really Merlin.'

'Just be glad that my father did not hear that,' Arthur said gravely.

Arthur doesn't look entirely convinced by this as he walks up to the front door. Merlin looks round, wondering how he's going to work the deception. Arthur realises Merlin hasn't followed him.

'Are you joining me?' Arthur asks looking back at Merlin.

'I can hardly be in two places at the same time can I,' Merlin said.

Emrys laughed, 'we already are.'

'Merlin looked around as if looking for an excuse, 'We don't want to overwhelm him. He probably doesn't get many visitors.'

Arthur shook his head, 'you really are a terrible liar. How I did not see it.'

'I may be a terrible liar but at least I'm not an idiot,' Merlin said brightly.

'Merlin,' growled Arthur.

'You said it yourself,' Merlin continued grinning teasingly. 'I'm a terrible liar yet you saw nothing. You just saw what you expected to see,' Merlin sighed sadly.

'I'll stay out here and watch the horses,' Merlin said in a very audible whisper.

'And naturally I'm going to think that you were too afraid of the sorcerer to come in,' sighed Arthur.

'I have never met anyone who is so scared so often. Scream like a big girl if there's any trouble,' Arthur says turning around in disgust.

'Don't worry. You'll hear me,' Merlin mutters as Arthur knocks on the door.

Arthur opens the door of the charcol makers hut and and peers in.

'Hello?' Arthur calls cautiously looking round the hut realising there's no one there.

'No one's there,' Gwaine said unhelpfully.

'We can see that,' Arthur rolled his eyes.

Meanwhile Merlin's hurrying into the trees when Arthur re-emerges from the hut.

'There's no one here,' Arthus said angrily. 'Are you sure this is the right place?' Arthur asked exiting and approaching Arthur.

'Oh I think I am,' Merlin said amused.

'I'm absolutely certain of it,' Merlin stressed. 'I'm sure he'll be back soon.'

'Well, how d'you know when he'll be back?' asked a nonplussed Arthur.

'Because he is the sorcerer,' Gwaine smirked.

'Warlock,' Merlin corrected.

'He's a doddery old man,' Merlin said wearing a smile. 'He can't have gone far. If you want his help, you'll have to just wait for him inside.'

Arthur suddenly takes in that Merlin was heading off into the trees, 'where are you sneaking off to?'

Merlin's looks surprised to be put on the spot and thinks on his feet, 'I have to pee.'

Gwaine snickered, 'that's the lie you go with.'

'Hey!' Merlin defended himself. 'It's a perfectly plausible lie.'

Arthur loooks disturbed by the revelation.

'And Arthur is too disturbed at the idea of me peeing to question it,' Merlin grinned. 'I have no idea why it is a perfectly normal bodily function. Trust me I have seen far worse in my years of service to you and Gaius than pee!'

'So unless you want to come and watch me,' Merlin gestures to the woods to a horrified looking Arthur, 'you should wait for him inside,' Merlin said emphasising his point with his hands.

'Why would I want to watch you?' Arthur asks slowly.

'I bloody well hope you wouldn't,' Merlin replied.

Merlin exasperatedly gestures towards the hut, 'there's the hut. I have to...' Merlin bounces around looking desperate. 'Make yourself at home,' Merlin gestures.

Arthur eyes Merlin rightfully suspiscous of his friend's behaviour. Then the Prince Regent turns and heads back inside the hut. Merlin hurries behind a tree, then focuses as he starts to incant the transformation spell.

'Miht dagena, bepecce me. Adeaglie pisne gast min freondum ond min feondum!' Merlin finishes as his eyes glow.

Arthur pokes around at a few dusty old bottles and pots on the table. In doing so, he knocks over a bottle, which in turn knocks a pot off the table. It falls to the floor and smashes. Arthur grimaces and he quickly kicks the pieces of broken pottery under the table to conceal them. Arthur tenses as the door opens.

Arthur looks stunned, 'you.'

'Me,' grinned Merlin.

Old Merlin looks back at Arthur, 'so we meet again, Arthur Pendragon.'

Arthur instinctively reaches for the hilt of his sword causing Old Merlin reacts to react to the move.

'You have come to kill me?' Merlin says in a nasally voice.

Arthur eyes Old Merlin warily, uncertain how to proceed, 'No. That wasn't my intention.'

Old Merlin walks forward and hears a crunch as he steps on some broken pot. Merlin looks down at it causing Arthur to grimace.

'Arthur's been discovered as the pot breaking vandal he is,' snickered Merlin.

'I broke a pot,' Arthur is forced to admit.

'Obviously,' Merlin drawled.

'You always were a clumsy fool,' Merlin says handing Arthur a broom.

'Oh I get to make Arthur clean,' Merlin said gleefully.

'How long have you wanted to do that?' Arthur demanded haughtily.

'Since the moment I met you,' Merlin said casually.

'Excuse me?' Arthur demanded.

'And now we're going to be treated to the crown prince of camelot cannot be seen doing servant's work speech,' Merlin said in a very carrying whisper.

'Merlin,' sighed Hunith. 'Be polite.'

Merlin looks gleeful at forcing his master to brush the floors, 'so if you haven't come all this way to kill me, why have you come here?' asks Merlin as Arthur begins sweeping the floors. 'I take it you didn't come all this way just to smash my favourite pot?' Merlin demanded angrily.

'Your favourite pot?' demanded Arthur. 'You don't even live there!'

'I had to get in the moment,' Merlin said brightly.

Arthur places the brush against a wall, 'if I'd known who you were, I would not have come at all,' Arthur says begins to walk away.

'I thought you may have come to ask me to use magic to heal your father?' Merlin asked helpfully.

Arthur stops at the words taken aback, 'How did you know?'

'The whole kingdom knew by then,' Emrys pointed out.

'I am sure that I thought you had no contact with anyone so had no idea who would have told you that,' Arthur said.

'And you thought that "Dragoon" was involved in the plot to kill your father,' Emrys said calmly.

'I know more than you could possibly comprehend,' Merlin said smirking and tapping a finger against his nose.

'Well, given your hatred for my father and everything he stands for, I've clearly had a wasted journey,' Arthur says.

Merlin hurries around from behind the table, 'do not suppose that you know my mind.'

'Will you help me?' Arthur asks fixing the sorcerer with a desperate look.

'Always,' Merlin said meaninfully.

'Merlin narrows his eyes at the young Prince, 'you are asking me to save the life of a man that would have me executed,' Merlin said grabbing a hanging tool from above.

'I know what I am asking of you,' Arthur says nearing the apparently old sorcer, 'and you have no reason to help me. But... You're my father's only hope. I'll give you anything you ask for. Land, gold - name your price.'

'I don't do what I do for any price,' sneered Merlin.

'I do not want your gold!' the warlock shouts angrily. 'All I have ever wanted is that people like me can live in peace. That those who practice magic are accepted, rather than hunted. That is all I ask.'

Arthur's unsure he can meet the demand.

'That is the price. Your father's life,' Merlin says.

Arthur is unsure but decides, 'I give you my solemn word. When I am King, things will be different,' Arthur says softly causing Merlin to smile. 'You won't have to live in fear.'

'So I will free magic?' asked Arthur.

Emrys hesitated, 'That is for you to decide. The future is changing. What happened now will never happen!'

'Then I will help you,' the old man said appearing touched barely able to contain his joy.

Merlin as Dragoon positively beams as he goes up to Arthur who looks alarmed at the sorcerer's closesness to him. Merlin shakes Arthur's hand causing Arthur to make a nervous sounding laugh.

'There's no time to waste. We must ride for Camelot immediately,' Arthur says clapping the old man lightly on his arm.

Merlin looks alarmed, 'now?'

'When else?' demanded Arthur gruffly. 'My father does not have long!'

'Have you forgotten that I'm pants at Healing spells,' Merlin reminded Arthur. 'I need time to learn. And I don't need you to question why Merlin has just disappeared!'

'My father weakens by the hour,' Arthur said turning back to the old man.

'But I have...' Merlin trails off trying to finx an excuse, 'no horse.'

'The one you came on not good enough anymore?' asked Arthur.

'You can use Merlin's,' Arthur gestures outside. 'He'll just have to walk back,' Arthur said going to turn again.

'Arthur,' laughs Gwen. 'That is really not going to help you or your father.'

'Well I hardly knew they were the same person,' Arthur muttered.

Merlin makes a sound of outrage, 'you would make your servant walk back to Camelot? I have a good mind not to help you,' Merlin said shaking a finger at him.

'I don't care whose horse you use,' Arthur said holding his arms out. 'We have to get to Camelot before it's too late.'

'First, I must gather some rare herbs,' Merlin says gesturing with his hand so that the rope he is holding slashes into the air. 'They are an essential part of the cure. I will come to Camelot at nightfall. If you want my help, that is how it needs to be,' Merlin says still thinking on his feet.

'That's a better excuse Merlin,' Gwen said shaking her head.

'I really need to teach you how to lie,' Gwaine said shaking his head. 'How you've survived this long as a sorcerer in camelot when you can't lie for pennies is anyone's guess.'

Arthur conceeds as he feels that he can't push the sorcerer any further, 'I will meet you at the lower gate outside the town... Give me your word you'll be there.'

'You have my word,' Merlin says softly.

Arthur smiles in relief at these words and turns. Merlin then pauses as he attempts to figure out how to handle the transformation back into his youthful self without being caught.

'Now just wait here one moment,' Merlin said banging a wrinkled fist down onto the table.

Arthur looks confused, 'why?'

'So that Merlin can transform back into himself without raising any questions,' Percival said helpfully.

'Yes, I realise that now,' Arthur said.

'Questions. So many questions. For once in your life, would you just do what your told?' Merlin demands as he strides out the front door.

'Because that's your job,' Arthur said.

Arthur feels chastised, 'all right.'

'Really that worked,' Merlin said surprised. 'If I knew that I'd have tried long ago.'

'It doesn't work when you look young,' Percival said.

'Then I'd have drunk aging potion first,' Merlin said simply.

Old Merlin emerges from the hut and hurries into the trees.

Arthur sniffs at a cup, puts it down and almost drops it.

'Would you cease breaking things,' Merlin said exasperated.

'I didn't break it that time,' Arthur defended himself.

'You almost did,' grinned Merlin.

Old Merlin hides behind the same tree as before and takes out a vial of liquid. Arthur soon grows impatient of waiting. He emerges from the hut and looks round. There's no sign of Merlin or the old sorcerer.

'Merlin?' Arthur calls looking around for his servant.

Only silence greets his call. Then there is a crack of twigs. Arthur grows uneasy and reaches for the hilt of his sword as he scans the trees. Merlin emerges from behind the tree, once again his youthful self but Arthur's suspicious.

'How you did not get caught I'll never know,' Gaius said.

'I'm not sure I want to think about how close he came to be getting caught,' sighed Hunith.

'What were you doing?' Arthur asks.

Merlin tilts his head thinking, 'peeing.'

Gaius snorted, 'no healthy young man should pee that long.'

Arthur looks disturbed again, 'you mean to say you were peeing all the time I was in there?'

Merlin nods grinning, 'I really had to go.'

'There is definitely something very wrong with you,' Arthur says.

'A lot of things,' Arthur agreed with his future self.

Arthur and Merlin ride back to Camelot.

Merlin enters the physician chambers at a run. Gaius is relieved to see him where he stands at the work bench.

'Merlin. I was worried. I thought something had happened,' Gaius said.

Merlin starts to search the shelves, taking various books down, 'well, apart from Arthur thinking there's something very wrong with my bladder, everything went to plan.'

'I really wish you wouldn't use those criptic statements all the time,' Gaius said. 'They only serve to worry me more.'

'Sorry?' Merlin asked.

Emrys laughed, 'oh I'm well known for my enigmatic statements. Drives my students mad.'

Gaius looks on with concern, 'I take it that this means you're going through with it?'

'Was there ever any doubt?' asked Leon.

'If I can heal Uther, Arthur has given me his word that when he is King, magic will no longer be outlawed,' Merlin said coming down the stairs. 'This could change everything.'

'Yes it will,' Leon said gravely.

'And what if something goes wrong? What of Arthur's attitude to magic then?' demanded Gaius.

'I'll blame magic for the death of my father and never allow magic in Camelot,' sighed Arthur.

Merlin stops and looks at Gaius, 'I live with the risk of being exposed every day. If I don't take this opportunity, maybe I'll spend the rest of my life having to hide who I really am. Everyone's always telling me I have this great destiny. Maybe this is it. I have to try.'

Gaius can't bring himself to argue as he stares after Merlin. Merlin gathers up the books and heads into his room. Gaius looks thoughtful as he stares after him.

Agravaine rides through the forest blue cloak billowing behind him. Agravaines is obviously planning to deliver the news of Arthur's plan to Morgana. Agravaine closes the door behind him as Morgana waits for what he has to say.

'Arthur has gone to consult with a sorcerer. He intends to use magic to heal Uther,' Agravaine says.

'Then we must see to it that he fails,' Morgana says a determined expression on her face.

'Doesn't she realise that this will just harm our kind more!' Merlin said angrily.

Emrys sighed, 'at this point Morgana has become too twisted by anger and hatred to listen to reason. She hates Uther too much to let him live and cannot deferentiate between the two of you.'

Agravaine takes his gloves off as pendant with a celtic symbol is lowered over a small fire. Morgana and Agravaine sits next to it. Morgana is holding the tiny silver charm as Agravaine watches on curiously. Morgana casts the charm into the fire.

'Seolforpræd apringe winstra, apringe wip ealle gode cræfte,' Morgana incants grinning.

Merlin hissed suddenly, 'oh no. Arthur I'm so sorry.'

'What is it?' demanded Arthur. 'What does it do?'

'It will cause my healing magic to kill Uther should he be wearing the pendant,' Merlin said grimly.

Arthur paled, 'which he will be. Agravaine will make sure of that.'

'Yes he will,' agreed Merlin.

Suddenly, the flames flare, the firelight dances in her eyes. Agravaine looks on, in awe. Morgana takes a pair of tongs and pulls the charm from the raging fire. She turns to Agravaine and drops the charm into his hand. He instinctively reaches out and catches it, before realizing the danger of what he has just done and reacts with surprise.

'It's cold,' Agravaine says surprised.

'Lucky for you,' Arthur muttered bitterly.

'I have bound it to the left hand path,' Morgana says giving Agravaine a piercing look who looks at the charm, impressed.

'The left hand path?' asks Merlin frowning.

'Some magical doctrines from the far east equate the left hand path with black magic,' explained Emrys. 'It means that any Light magic will become the opposite and equal. Thus, the magic use to heal the bleeding will increase the bleeding tenfold killing him. I've had a lot of time to figure it out,' Emrys said as all eyes turned to him.

'You must place the charm around Uther's neck,' Morgana says seriously.

'What will it do to him?' asks Agravaine gazing down at the pendant.

'The force of any healing magic will be reversed,' Morgana said sounding very satisfied, 'and magnified tenfold. By trying to cure his father, Arthur will seal his fate.'

'I'm sorry,' Merlin said quietly.

Arthur shook his head, 'its not your fault. You could have had no idea what was going to happen and had you done nothing my father would have died anyway.'

Agravaine looks grave as he takes this in, 'Arthur will never forgive himself. He'll be destroyed.'

'So he does care,' murmured Merlin.

'Not enough to protect my father!' Arthur spat angrily.

'He hates Uther for what happened to your mother and uncle,' Emrys agreed readily, 'but you are her son. Sadly his hatred for your father outweighed the love for your mother.'

'And a broken Prince will make a terrible King,' Morgana says causing Agravaine to smile.

In Merlin's room Merlin looks through several books at once but fails to find what he's looking for. Merlin looks frustrated.

'I promised Arthur I could heal Uther and I can't even find the right spell,' Merlin says desperately.

'That's because you're reading the wrong books. Here,' Gaius holds out a small leather tome, which Merlin takes.

'Thank you Gaius,' Merlin said quietly.

'I may not always approve of what you do but I will always help you,' Gaius said softly.

'Gwillem of Cambria was as mad as a coot, but there has never been a better healer,' Gaius says tapping the book.

Merlin smiles, 'Gaius. Thank you,' Merlin says and rushes out.

In the King's chambers Gwen finishes tending to Uther. She turns to carry the tray down to get cleaned. Then she gasps when she turns to find standing there.

'Agravaine has never once visited Uther,' frowned Gwen.

'It was cold today. Perhaps it's a good idea to start a fire,' suggested Agravaine blandly.

'Of course,' Gwen says still sounding short of breath.

Gwen leaves with the medicine tray. Agravaine waits until Gwen she leaves. He then takes out the tiny silver charm, then quickly and carefully places the charm around Uther's neck. He ensures it is carefully tucked out of sight in Uther's robes.

Agravaine leans down and whispers in Uther's ears, 'finally, you will get all that you deserve, old friend.'

'Were they ever friends?' asked Arthur.

'Once,' Gaius said softly.

Agravaine looks down at Uther for a poignant beat, then heads out leaving Uther to sleep.

In the physician's chambers both Merlin and Gaius reads the healing spell again.

'You must only four drops. Any more could be dangerous,' Gaius says handing Merlin the book.

Merlin takes the book, 'let's hope I can remember the spell.'

'That would be a good start,' Arthur said dryly.

'You must trust your abilities, Merlin,' Gaius said.

'I do just not in healing,' Merlin said.

'Merlin!?' Arthur is heard shouting a few corridors away.

Gaius and Merlin startle and exchange a worried look.

'You have to get rid of him,' Merlin whispers lowly.

'Merlin!?' Arthur shouts again.

The door to the physician chambers opens and Arthur enters looking around for Merlin. Gaius picks up the healing book, pretending to be in the middle of reading.

'Arthur,' Gaius greets.

'Gaius, have you seen my useless toad of a servant?' Arthur asks.

'Not so much of the useless,' Merlin said insulted. 'You wouldn't last a day without me!'

'So you've said,' Arthur rolled his eyes. 'Repeatedly.'

'Yet it still has not sunk in,' Merlin grinned.

Gaius wore a blank look, 'I'm afraid not.'

'You know I do know you cover for Merlin,' Arthur said.

'Well, where on earth is he?' Arthur demanded.

'Don't say it,' growled Merlin.

'Have you tried the tavern?' Gaius says after being put on the spot.

'You just had to say it,' groaned Merlin.

Arthur's enraged, 'the tavern. Of course. I'm going to make him wish he was never born.'

Arthur heads out and closes the door revealing Merlin holding some herbs. He fixes Gaius with a look of outrage.

'Why did you tell him I was in the tavern?' Merlin asks without raising his voice.

'It was the first thing that popped into my head,' Gaius said.

'Should I start worrying that you seem to have an obsession with the tavern?' quipped Merlin.

'Well, next time, go for the second, or the third thing that pops into your head. Just anywhere but the tavern,' Merlin says gesturing with his hands and opening the door a crack and checks the corridor, then looks back at Gaius.

'Good luck, Merlin,' Gaius says giving his ward a poignant look as Merlin heads out.

Arthur waits impatiently by the lower gate as guards walk in the opposite direction as their liege lord. Merlin once again disguised as an old man sneaks around behing him. He hears a sound and turns round to see Old Merlin emerging from the darkness.

'Why did you not just make yourself known?' asked Arthur.

'I couldn't make it obvious I came from inside the walls of Camelot,' Merlin explained simply.

'I'd started to think you weren't coming,' Arthur says turning around to greet the sorcerer.

'I gave you my word. And here I am,' the elderly Merlin says standing rigidly.

'Good. We must hurry,' Arthur heads off, away from the palace, taking Old Merlin by surprise.

'I am led to believe that the King's Palace is that way?' Merlin gestures towards the palace.

Arthur holds a gloved hand out, 'I can hardly be seen walking through the main gate with a known sorcerer.'

'That would be hard to explain,' Gwen admitted.

'Try impossible,' snorted Arthur.

'What would happen if they did catch you?' asked Gwen quietly.

Arthur sighed, 'whist they could not have me executed. If it got out to the people or the council they would lose all faith in me especially if they believed I was either enchanted or on the side of those who attacked me. It might even cause an uprising.'

'It defintely would,' Emrys said gravely, 'with Morgana and Agravaine whispering into people's ears.'

'So you are already going back on your word. You promised that I would no longer have to live in fear,' Merlin said affronted.

'You're forgetting that you're yet to heal my father. When you have, I'll give you all that I promised,' Arthur said with a hand gesture.

The old form of Merlin takes all of this in giving Arthur a suspiscous look. Arthur continues gesturing in the way he had been walking. Then Merlin then nods in acceptance and they head off down the streets.

Arthur hurries through the dark, damp passage. He turns to see Old Merlin lagging behind and reacts with frustration. Arthur waits for Old Merlin to catch up. When he arrives, Old Merlin is out of breath.

'Is this really as fast as you can walk?' Arthur asks quickly overtaking the aged Merlin.

'Being old is painful and tiring,' muttered Merlin.

'Try really being old,' Gaius rolled his eyes.

'When you are as old as I, we will see how fast you can walk,' Merlin said taking a chance to lean on a pile of sandbags. 'I need to rest a moment.'

'There's no time,' Arthur said urgently rushing to the old man's side.

'Then perhaps you should carry me?' Merlin said crotchily.

'I was actually joking,' Emrys said.

'Fine. If it means we get there quicker, I will carry you,' Arthur turns. 'Come on.'

Arthur positions himself infront of theold Merlin and bends down slightly which allows Merlin to hop onto his back. Arthur heads off. Old Merlin kicks him with his heals, as you would a horse. Arthur stops, outraged.

'Did you just kick me?' demanded Arthur.

'You said we were in a hurry,' Emrys said casually.

'Did you just kick me?' Arthur demands.

'Now who's wasting time? Ya!'Old Merlin kicks Arthur again enjoying himself.

'You are enjoying yourself way too much,' Arthur muttered.

'Faster. Faster,' the old Merlin continues to command his Prince.

In the Gryffin Corridor of the King's Palace Arthur approaches the guards outside Uther's chambers now on his feet. Merlin in his old sorcerer form is nowhere to be seen.

'You're dismissed,' Arthur instructs.

The guards hesitate, surprised by the order, 'but, Sire. We were instructed not to leave our post.'

'I'm your Regent you have to do as I say,' Arthur said angrily.

'And I said you are dismissed,' Arthur repeated.

'Yes, my Lord,' the guard bows.

Then the guard's head off. Arthur waits until they've disappeared round the corner, then clears his throat. Old Merlin hobbles out of the shadows. Arthur ushers Old Merlin into Uther's chambers, then follows him inside.

Uther lies in bed, barely breathing. Arthur grows increasingly anxious as he watches Old Merlin placing four drops of hogswart on Uther's lips. Old Merlin takes a branch of sage and holds it over Uther. Old Merlin psyches himself up and his eyes start to glow. It is at this sight does Arthur crack.

'Wait!' Arthur stops Merlin

Merlin stands down, 'is something wrong?'

'My father has taught me never to trust magic, and now I am using it to save him,' Arthur said.

'Your own life has been saved using magic more times than you can possibly imagine,' Merlin said softly.

'What on earth are you talking about?' Arthur demands.

'I merely mean to say that magic is all around you. It is woven into the very fabric of the world,' Merlin said soft and lovingly.

Arthur's unsettled, 'how can I be sure it's the right thing to do?'

'I know you have suffered because of magic, as many have,' the old man says sadly.

'As many magical have suffered at your father's hands,' Merlin says softly. 'Just as the blade is not evil nor is magic it is but the will of you the user which determines whether it is evil or not.'

'But not all magic, and not all sorcerers are the same. I wish only to show you that magic can be used for good. I hope one day you'll see me in a different light,' Merlin says softly.

'Its all I've ever wanted,' murmured Merlin.

Arthur's moved by the argument. Arthur and Old Merlin trade stares for a poignant beat, then Arthur nods and steps back. Old Merlin turns to Uther, psyches himself up then holds up the sage branch. Old Merlin's eyes glow. The sage branch begins to smoke. Old Merlin wafts the incense over Uther.

'Efencume ætgædre, eala gastas cræftige: gestricie pis lic forod,' Merlin enchants with growing intensity.

Old Merlin completes the spell and his eyes glow. There is silence as the tension rises. Arthur looks at Uther, desperately hoping to see some signs of life. For a moment, it looks like the spell has failed. Old Merlin grows anxious. Suddenly, Uther's eyes snap open and Arthur's thrilled.

'Morgana's pendant didn't work,' Merlin said in relieved surprise.

'Father... Father?' Arthur and Uther clinch hands.

Uther manages a weak smile, 'Arthur.'

Arthur laughs in relief. Old Merlin allows himself a smile, overcome with relief. But as Uther looks up at Arthur, his expression suddenly contorts in pain. His breath starts to fail. Arthur reacts, alarmed.

'What's happening!?' Arthur asks looking around for the sorcerer.

Merlin's equally alarmed, 'I don't know.'

'Do something!' Arthur commands.

Uther draws one last pain filled breath then goes still. Arthur looks distraught as he has no idea what is happening. The old Merlin feels for a pulse but there isn't one which causes Merlin reel back as he realises he's failed.

'Father,' Arthur cried out.

'Oh Arthur,' Gwen said compassionately taking her love's hand.

'I'm so sorry,' Merlin said softly.

'Don't be,' Arthur said. 'Its not your fault. Its Morgana and it has not happened yet. Now it never will!'

'He's dead,' Merlin says voice wobbling.

'I could not understand how,' Emrys said. 'I had felt the spell work and then he was suddenly dead. Worse I knew that I had hardened your heart against magic forever. I feared that there would be another purge – this time at your hands.'

Arthur struggles to accept this, 'no... He can't be…' Arthur said shaking Uther desperately. 'Father... Father!?...' Arthur shouts forcefully.

'Oh Arthur,' sighed Merlin. 'Nothing will save him now. I'm sorry,' the warlock repeated.

'It. Is. Not. Your. Fault.' Arthur said tightly.

Arthur realises the futility of his actions. He gives up, stares at Uther, his mind swimming. He suddenly turns on Old Merlin, more hurt and angry than we have ever seen him. All Old Merlin can do is look on, horrified.

'What have you done?' Arthur whispers.

'It wasn't his fault,' Gwen said softly.

'It was understandable that Arthur would think that,' Emrys said sighing. 'Its what it looked like. It would have been better had I not tried to help.'

'This was not supposed to happen,' Merlin said shaking his head.

Arthur still looks horrified, 'you gave me your word. You- you have killed him... You killed him!'

'No,' Merlin says quietly.

Arthur draws his sword and advances on Old Merlin, 'you'll die for what you've done!'

'And so my worst fear is confirmed,' sighs Emrys. 'You killing me.'

Merlin's eyes flash as he thrusts his hand out, 'hleap on bæc!'

Arthur flies backwards and falls to the floor, momentarily stunned. Merlin stares at his fallen friend saddened by what has transpired here as he is forced to flees Arthur takes a moment to come to his senses.

'Running would only confirm my guilt in Arthur's mind,' sighed Merlin.

In the Gryffin corridor Merlin ducks behind a column, in shock from what just happened. He hears guards approaching, takes out a little bottle of potion and downs it.

Back in Uther's chambers Gaius closes Uther's eyes. Merlin hurries in. He sees Gaius standing over the bed, and Arthur and Gwen looking on, traumatised. Merlin struggles to accept what he's seeing.

'I'm sorry, Arthur... The King is dead,' Gaius says heavily.

Arthur is still unable to accept this, tears streaming down his face. Merlin looks on, horrified at both the news and Arthur revealing his grief. Gaius covers Uther's face with the sheet.

That night Gaius enters his darkened chambers with Merlin following behind him.

'The spell was working,' Merlin said not moving from the door. 'I'm sure of it. I did everything right. I don't know what happened.

'I think I do,' Gaius says opening his hand to reveal the small silver charm. 'I found it round Uther's neck. It's been enchanted and such an enchantment would reverse the effects of your healing spell. Uther didn't stand a chance.'

'Why didn't you tell me?' demanded Arthur.

'It would be a witch hunt to find the traitor,' Emrys said simply. 'And we could not accuse Agravaine with no evidence so it would be no good and magic would still be responsible for Uther's death.'

Merlin suddenly suspects who is responsible, 'Morgana.'

'I believe so,' Gaius agreed closing his hand around the pendant.

In Morgana's hunt Agravaine is curled up in bed. Agravaine enters to find Morgana curled up in bed. Morgana speaks before Agravaine can deliver his exciting news.

'Uther's dead, isn't he?' Morgana asks in a weak voice.

'What's up with her?' asked Merlin.

'Yes I thought she'd be glad,' Arthur said bitterly.

'I have no idea,' admitted Emrys. 'I have never seen this.'

Agravaine confused, 'How did you know?'

'She's a seer,' Merlin rolled his eyes. 'She must have sensed it.'

Morgana sits up, 'I felt it. I felt his pain.'

'Does she regret it?' asked Arthur hardly daring to hope.

'Not enough,' Emrys said gravely.

'I thought Uther's death would be cause for celebration?' Agravaine asks surprised at Morgana's muted reaction.

'Arthur will replace him. There'll be no celebration until I take my place upon the throne,' Morgana says softly.

'That might be sooner than you think,' Agravaine says.

'Not if I have anything to do with it,' Merlin said darkly.

'Arthur is young, untested. He will look to his trusted uncle for counsel,' Agravaine said looking very satisfied. 'And I will ensure that he fails.'

In Arthur's chambers Arthur sits in a chair, staring into space, struggling to process his emotions. Merlin enters and stands at the door for a moment. Before Merlin closes the door and enters the room.

'I am so sorry,' Merlin said.

'It is not your fault,' Arhur repeated. 'I trusted the wrong person.'

Arthur absorbs the sympathy. Merlin struggles to express what he's feeling.

'I... I should've... I wish that there was something I could have done,' Merlin stammers.

'Merlin. No one but me is to blame for this,' Arthur says heavily.

'It is not your fault, sire,' Leon sighed. 'The only ones responsible are Morgana and Agravaine's fault,'

'You are not to blame. This isn't your fault,' Merlin said guilt still heavy on his concious.

'It's not yours either,' Gwaine said sharply.

'I'm entirely to blame. My father spent twenty years fighting magic. To think I knew better. I was so arrogant. That arrogance has cost my father his life,' Arthur said griefstricken.

'He was dying, Arthur,' Merlin said softly. 'Had you done nothing he would still have died.'

'You were only doing what you thought was right. I'm sure that that old sorcerer meant no harm. Perhaps the spell went wrong. Uther was dying. Maybe nothing could have saved him,' Merlin said softly.

'We'll never know. All I know for sure is that I've lost both my parents to magic. It is pure evil. I'll never lose sight of that again,' Uther declared.

'It broke my heart to hear that,' Emrys murmured.

'And I lost my father to the blade,' Merlin said sharply. 'Does not mean that it gives me the right to condemn all those who possess a sword or the knowledge to use one.'

Merlin stands silent at the young King's words as his chest heaves. Someone knocks on the door. Arthur sits for a moment looking like he'd rather ignore the caller gets up resolutely and leaves. Merlin is left with tears in his eyes as his hopes are dashed.

Arthur enters the mighty room where Uther is lying in state. There is a raised dais in the centre of the space. Uther lies on it, surrounded by candles. Arthur begins the long, lonely walk to Uther's side. Merlin and Gaius close the doors. Arthur reaches the dais.

'How many knew of the sorcerer?' asked Merlin.

'At first not many,' Emrys admitted, 'but whispers got out.;

In the Ante chamber Merlin sits on a ledge posture rigid. Gaius sits down next to Merlin.

'We must leave him to mourn,' Gaius says taking in Merlin's shell shocked expression. 'Merlin?'

'This is all my fault. I killed him,' Merlin practically breathed out.

'It was not your fault,' Arthur repeated angrily.

Gaius turns so he's facing Merlin, 'you did not kill Uther. Morgana did,' Gaius said gently causing Merlin to turn sharply to Gaius.

'Also my fault,' sighed Merlin.

'Maybe,' agreed Arthur, 'but Morgana was pretty far down that path without your help. You just gave her the final push. And you had no choice. I hate what you did but it was either Morgana or the rest of the innocents who would suffer and die at Morgause's hands!'

'Uther's spirit died when she broke his heart,' Gaius says.

Arthur sighed, 'you know he's right.'

'We must look to the future. Uther's death will allow Arthur's progression to the throne. We must hope it brings peace and stability to the land,' Gaius says softly.

'Not with Morgana around,' Arthur said grimly.

'Nor with Arthur still closed minded to magic which would give Morgana a host of potential recruits,' agreed Gwen said softly.

Merlin shook his head, 'magic will still be outlawed.'

Gaius nods sadly.

'I've turned Arthur against it forever,' Merlin took a deep breath. 'He'll never know who I really am.'

'That time will come. I'm sure of it. Arthur will be under even more pressure now that he's King. He will need you more than ever,' Gaius says undoubting.

'Even if he'll never admit it,' Gwen said fondly.

'There's nothing more to be done. Let's go and have some supper,' Gaius suggests.

Merlin thinks for a second, 'I think I'll wait here.'

Gaius takes this in touched by Merlin's devotion. Gaius stands up and heads off in the direction that the guards are standing. Merlin is left to wait with a heavy heart as tears sparkle in his eyes.

Meanwhile in the throne room Arthur kisses Uther's forehead. Tears streak down Arthur's face.]

Merlin sits on the floor against the stone railing. He stares at the wall opposite the doors. Arthur opens the doors and sunlight streams in through the windows but Merlin refuses to look at his King.

'Merlin?' Arthur asks a grief-thick voice.

Merlin turns his head and sees Arthur standing over him. Arthur has dried his eyes. He is calm and composed, almost serene. They trade stares, Arthur looks at the light flooding in through the window - in a contemplative mood.

'It is a new day,' Arthur says calm.

Merlin takes this in, then stands.

'You been here all night?' Arthur asks voice still calm.

'I didn't want you to feel that you were alone,' Merlin said simply.

'You're a loyal friend, Merlin,' Arthur says touched and closes the throne room doors. Arthur takes a breath, 'you must be hungry?'

'Starving,' Merlin admits.

'Me too,' Arthur smiles. 'Come on. You can make us some breakfast,' Arthur says as he and Merlin walk up the spiral staircase.

'That's not by job,' Merlin defended.

The sun shines over Camelot. The start of a beautiful day. The read and gold flag of Camelot flutters in the air. A metal statue of a knight on a horse stands proudly. Guards take their positions, villagers head up the palace steps, pages blow their trumptes.

The Throne Room is packed with courtiers who bow as Arthur walks toward the throne. An air of excitement and anticipation fills the room. We take in the presence of Merlin, Gaius, Gwen, Agravaine, Percival, Sir Leon, Gwaine and Elyan... Arthur kneels. Geoffrey of Monmouth stands next to him with the crown in his hands.

'Will you solemnly promise and swear to govern the Peoples of Camelot according to their respective laws and customs?' asks Geoffrey.

'Is that really what the inauguration vows are?' asked Merlin surpised.

'Yes,' Arthur said simply.

'Then how do those vows allow Uther to ban magic under the pain of death when the vows themselves say that you are to govern us according to our customs?' asked Merlin.

'I never saw it that way,' Arthur said simply.

'I solemnly swear so to do,' Arthur said face seriously.

'Will you to your power cause Law and Justice, in Mercy, to be executed in all your judgments?' Geoffrey questioned.

'I will,' Arthur said voice deeps.

Geoffrey raises the crown, 'then by the sacred laws vested in me, I pronounce you Arthur, King of Camelot!'

Geoffrey of Monmouth places a crown upon Arthur's head. Arthur stands and looks out over the courtiers.

'Long live the King!' Agaravaine shouts first.

Everyone joins in the chant, 'long live the King! Long live the King! Long live the King! Long live the King! Long live the King! Long live the king! Long live the King!'

'Long live the King!' Merlin and the rest of the viewers shouts.
