Sooo! New chapter up! This one's set a bit earlier, pre-canon actually. It's Kurama's first day at Meiou High School, and things are going to go wrong. I'm a bit iffy on the characterization because I wrote this with the intention of it being post-canon, but pre-canon suited the situation way better. Anyways, here are some more words to (hopefully) cheer you up a little during the pandemic!
On another note, thank you, Neon, for being my first reviewer! It means so much to me that people are actually enjoying the stuff I write. I honestly can't thank you enough.
Another thing (and I know this author's note is getting ridiculously long) is that I'm stumped for inspiration for chapter 5. I've got chapters 4 and 5+1 written, so I just need an idea for a funny situation where someone thinks Kurama is female. If you have any, please please please tell me. Writing prompts just aren't working and I want to finish this story, dammit!
Disclaimer: I don't own Yu Yu Hakusho.
Kurama was attending his first day of high school. Walking through the crowd of nervous students, he felt a twinge of apprehension shoot through his stomach. Confused, he stopped. Why was he nervous? He knew that the curriculum would pose no challenge to him, and even though he didn't have any particularly close friends attending this high school, he had never been very social. So why was his stomach fluttering?
As he was standing there, an unknown pair of arms suddenly wrapped themselves around him from behind. As he let out an "mmpff" in surprise, a female voice he didn't recognize practically shouted in his ear.
"Hey! I haven't seen you around yet! I mean, I know almost all the girls at this school, and quite a few of the boys too, but you're new! By the way, I love your hair. It's so pretty and smooth! What shampoo do you use? Is your hair really naturally red like that?"
"Umm," Kurama tried to butt in, but the crazy girl just bounced around in front of him and continued her rant.
"That's so cool! I wish my hair was a funky color like that, but it's just black. Anyways, what middle school did you go to? Do you know anyone here? You looked a little lonely so I'm guessing you don't. Oh, you must have had to leave all your friends when they went to different high schools! Did you have a boyfriend? Can you not see each other anymore? Is that why you're so sad?"
"Umm," Kurama tried again, but the girl just barreled on.
You definitely had a boyfriend. Actually, you look like you would have had guys fighting to be your boyfriend! Although that boy's uniform is a bit odd, why are you wearing it? Do you have something against skirts?"
"Excuse me," Kurama said, firmly moving the girl's hands away from his shoulders where they'd been planted. "As much as I appreciate the welcome, I feel like I might have to clarify that I am actually a boy."
The girl looked at him in shock for a second, clearly doing a double take, then turned bright red and looked at the ground shyly, twirling a strand of hair around one finger.
"Sorry about that," she said, suddenly shy. After a few seconds, she bowed jerkily, as if she had been working up the courage to do so.
"My name's Haruka Arisawa. You can call me Haruka, though."
"Shuichi Minamino," Kurama responded, bowing elegantly in return. "It's nice to meet you, Haruka-san."
At that, the poor girl flushed an even deeper shade of red, bowed again, and hurried off with an incoherent "see you around" and an odd expression on her face that looked to be half embarrassment, half delight. Kurama sighed. No matter how long he lived, he would likely never really understand women. At least, he supposed, people at this new school would hopefully soon learn that he was male. He could tell that, with his hair long, being mistaken for a girl would become an all too common occurrence.
So, I hope this is still good. Again, if you have an idea for chapter 5, please drop a review, I don't take PMs. Thank you for making it this far in the story. I hope you like it!
