"Kurt! You overslept!" Rachel howled, throwing Kurt's comforter off of him. Kurt moaned and reached blindly for it as he began to shiver. Rachel kept the loft freezing cold.
"Stop," he moaned as Rachel proceeded to shake him. His stomach already felt uneasy. He didn't want to be sick, not before class.
"If you want to ride with me then we need to leave in four minutes!" Rachel insisted. As much as Kurt wanted to stay home, he knew there was no way he would be able to get back to sleep after that. So, he got up and threw together an outfit, putting in no effort whatsoever.
He brushed his teeth quickly, and managed to do something with his hair. Kurt only had three classes that day, so he figured it would be okay if he didn't look perfect for one day.
"Come on, come on!" Rachel went on, nearly shoving him out the door. Kurt was really starting to regret getting out of bed.
They stopped at a Starbucks, but the coffee smell made Kurt feel worse. He shivered and sweated at the same time, and just didn't feel comfortable. He felt a dull headache coming on behind his eyes as well, which felt almost as bad as a migraine.
Rachel didn't seem to notice anything was up, so once they got to NYADA and parted ways, he figured he was in the clear. He hated whenever she tried to baby him to the point of insanity, so he never told her when anything was wrong anymore.
Kurt made it to his Drama II class with seconds to spare, and caught Adam shoot him an odd look. Kurt just shrugged his shoulders, though, still trying to catch his breath from nearly running up the staircase.
He fought to stay awake throughout the block period, and by the time they were free to go at 10:15, Kurt seriously debated just going home and sleeping until he felt a little better.
"Hey," Adam said, catching up to him in the commons area. "We have forty-five minutes until dance. Do you want to grab coffee or go study for drama?"
"That's okay," Kurt shrugged. "I'm just really tired. Rachel woke me up with four minutes to get ready."
"Is everything okay?" Adam asked, following Kurt downstairs.
Kurt lied and told Adam he was fine, even though he was getting worse and worse by the minute.
"Well, I'm gonna go to the library. If you change your mind, you know where it is. Don't forget the Adam's Apples have rehearsal at three!"
Kurt nearly dropped his book as he suddenly remembered. There was no way in the world he would survive one of Adam's grueling rehearsals. He honestly didn't even know what they were rehearsing for, since there weren't regular competitions like back in high school.
He trudged off to one of the sitting areas before heading to his dance class. He took it with Adam, and it was slightly tolerable since they weren't stuck with Cassandra July.
Today was all about conditioning, and Kurt struggled to keep up. He was normally considered one of the average dancers in the class, but he could barely keep his balance. His headache had gotten ten times worse, and the classroom felt burning hot, even though Kurt could feel the cool air on his skin.
He got a cramp in one of his legs, and was then behind everyone else. Kurt forced his eyes to stay open, even though his newfound headache pain brought along a wave of severe dizziness and nausea.
"Kurt?" the instructor called over to him. "Kurt, are you alright? Do you want to sit down and get some water?"
Kurt shook his head, even though he felt his knees quivering. He couldn't stop. The class was only an hour, and he told himself that he could make it.
Regardless, a five-minute break was called shortly after.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Adam pressed, helping Kurt sit down slowly.
"Yeah," Kurt huffed, breathing heavy to try to keep from getting sick. "Just a little out of shape."
Adam looked at Kurt skeptically, and helped him back up to his feet once it was time to start again.
Kurt hoped he would do a little better after a drink and short break, but he was only getting worse. He kept pushing through it, but eventually his backfired on him.
Kurt had been going in for a turn, but once he fell, he was down for the count. He closed his eyes, feeling the hard floor against the back of his head.
When he blinked awake again, nearly everyone was hovering over him.
"Back up," Adam ordered, sensing how overwhelmed Kurt was. He held Kurt's head in his lap and. "Kurt, you're not okay. How do you feel?"
"Cold," Kurt whined, shivering violently.
"He needs to get home," the dance instructor said, sounding concerned. "Are you his emergency contact?"
"No, actually," Adam informed her. "Rachel Berry is. I don't think she's in a class right now, but she's going to be worried about him."
Kurt winced. He didn't want her to worry about him. He would be fine, after a little rest. He figured he had just pushed himself too hard, jumping into college so quickly.
"Don't sit up," Adam told Kurt. "She went to get Rachel. Do you want to go home?"
"Yeah," Kurt murmured, shutting his eyes as he felt Adam smooth his sweaty hair back from his forehead.
Kurt smiled at the cool touch of his hands, and finally heard Rachel.
"Kurt? Oh my God, what happened? Are you okay?" she panicked, trying to see if he was hurt.
"I think he'll be fine," Adam spoke up for him. Kurt was thankful; he didn't feel like talking much. "He bumped his head a little, and he feels awfully warm."
The both of them helped Kurt sit up, and tried to walk him out to Adam's car. Kurt insisted they didn't help him- after all, he wasn't that sick.
He didn't object to Adam driving him home, or even Rachel sitting in the back with him and trying to talk to him.
Kurt put his pajamas back on as soon as he got home, and Rachel forced him into bed. Adam hung around for a little bit, and Kurt wished he didn't have to go back to NYADA. He wanted Adam to stay there all day with him, until he felt better again.
Rachel brought him some medicine and a glass of water, and Adam followed. He sat down on the bed as Rachel handed Kurt his pills.
"Kurt, why didn't you just say that you felt bad when I asked you? You scared me to death in that dance class," he said.
"Sorry," Kurt mumbled after swallowing the medicine, and he quickly covered his arms up with his comforter. "I just didn't want you to worry."
Adam frowned, and Kurt was afraid he had made him mad.
"He doesn't tell anyone when he feels bad," Rachel chimed in. "You have to figure it out for yourself, even though he knows how frustrating it is for the rest of us.
"I'm not good at being sick," Kurt confessed, looking down at the floor to avoid eye contact with Adam. The older boy smoothed his covers over him and helped him take a drink of his water when Kurt reached for it.
"I was just worried after you fell and hit your head," he explained. "You should have just told me, Kurt. I would have driven you home after our first class."
Kurt sighed. There was nothing either of them could do about it at that point. He just wanted to sleep.
"Kurt, you've barely talked to either of us all week. Look, we get that college is hard and you miss Blaine, whatever. But it doesn't do anyone any good for you to keep it bottled up. If you would have just told me this morning that you were sick we could have avoided all of this," Rachel said.
Kurt tried not to roll his eyes. He knew very well that he was shutting them out again, but how was he supposed to apologize.
"Okay, I'm sorry," he said, mostly to get Rachel to shut up. He turned onto his side and buried his face in his pillow, feeling his head throb miserably. Everything ached, and his body was overcome with exhaustion. If only he could fall asleep…
He heard Rachel get up and leave, but Adam stayed and rubbed his back. Kurt was grateful, because without him he would truly be all alone, and that was Kurt Hummel's one, true, fear.
Author's Notes:
Here have some Kadam to start your day off with! He wasn't on the show much, but Adam is still a fun character to write. I can just see him being completely oblivious to everything, and Rachel has to explain that Kurt doesn't tell anyone anything until it's too late and then cuddles ensue because he was so sweet to Kurt. Ugh I love it.
Only five days until Glee is back!
