It was pushing two in the morning, and Blaine still sat in the waiting room, all alone and worried sick for his boyfriend, who had been rushed into surgery hours earlier after his fever spiked, and everyone assumed his appendix had burst.
The last three hours had been filled with worry, exhaustion, and anything but sleep. Blaine wanted to see Kurt so badly, but because of how sick he had become, only family was allowed back in his room for the time being. Even so, Blaine stuck around to wait for an update on him before he left. He wanted Kurt to know he was there.
It felt like hours before Carole finally emerged from the elevator and found him in the waiting room. Blaine immediately stood, anxious to hear about his boyfriend.
"Is he okay?" Blaine asked. "Did everything go alright?"
Carole put her hand on his shoulder to calm him. "He's doing just fine, honey. He's still sick, and will be for a few days, but he's doing better. They said that once they see how he's doing in the morning, you should be able to come back and see him."
Blaine nodded, breathing a sigh of relief that Kurt was okay. He had nothing else to worry about. Soon his boyfriend would be back at home and all better. It would all be okay.
"Thanks for keeping me updated," he told her, bending down to grab his jacket from his chair. It was May, but still got cool at night. "Um, would you mind to tell him I was here? And that I'll see him in the morning?"
"Sure, honey. Go home and get some rest. It's been a long night for everyone," Carole said. Blaine nodded, feeling exhaustion sink in for the first time. He didn't want to leave, but no matter what he did he still couldn't see Kurt until the morning. So, as much as he hated to, he left the hospital, even though he knew he probably wouldn't sleep much until he could see for himself that his boyfriend was okay.
Finn sat on the lumpy hospital couch as his parents watched over his brother, even though he was sound asleep. Finn would have liked to go home and sleep in his own bed, but he felt bad asking his mom to take him home when she was busy fussing over Kurt. So he decided to just suck it up and make it through the night.
His brother had become sick on their last night in New York City, and had quickly grown worse on their flight back to Ohio. So, as soon as they arrived, his mom insisted on taking Kurt to the emergency room. He turned out to have appendicitis, and was quickly taken into surgery. It had all happened so fast, so it was nice to have a chance to sit down and catch his breath.
Finn had been so worried for Kurt on the plane, but now that his parents were there and Finn knew he would be okay, he felt better. The only thing he seemed to be good at was making things worse, but thankfully Kurt didn't have to depend on him anymore.
It was four in the morning, and no one had slept. Well, Kurt was out like a light, but Finn couldn't get comfortable, and his parents weren't willing to leave Kurt's side, not even to rest.
A nurse came in a little bit later to check on him, and Kurt woke up with a start. He was about to start crying, but his dad quickly had him calmed down.
"You're okay, kiddo," he said, his voice hushed. "We're right here. What's the matter?"
Finn watched as the expression on his brother's face went from upset to confused. "W-where's Blaine?"
"He had to go home, honey," his mom told him. "He's going to come see you in the morning, though."
Kurt shifted uncomfortably, and let out a quiet cry when he hurt his tender right side. Finn bit his lip, hating to see him like that but not quite sure what to do without making things worse. So he just sat back and watched.
"Lie still, sweetheart," his mom told him. "Are you uncomfortable? We can help you get situated."
"I don't know," Kurt mumbled. He rubbed his eyes and tugged at the IV tube in his hand.
"Don't mess with it, bud," his dad said, pulling his hand away. "Do you want to go back to sleep?"
"I feel funny," Kurt answered. He gazed off, eyes unfocused as he stared at nothing. "Is Finn here?"
Finn sat up straight at the mention of his name, and his mom looked over at him expectantly as he approached Kurt.
"Hey, bro," he said. He sat on the edge of the thin mattress, and Kurt slowly looked over at him.
"Hi," Kurt said back, his voice barely above a whisper. "Dad, can I go back to sleep?"
Kurt's dad pulled the thin hospital blanket up over his arms, and Finn got up so he could sleep.
His brother was out again within several minutes, but as tired as Finn was, he wouldn't let himself sleep, too. Even though his parents were likely to be up with Kurt for the rest of the night, Finn just couldn't fall asleep and risk missing out on anything. He would feel guilty if he went to sleep and Kurt needed him, so he stayed up for the rest of the night, as hard as it was. Because that's what brothers were for.
