At his highest point, he was only ten or so feet in the air. Possibly lower.
And, of course, no one was expecting it to happen. Blaine had shown up to see the show Kurt had singlehandedly put together. He was having fun and doing what he loved, and Blaine loved to see that.
It was all going great, and Blaine couldn't be prouder of his fiancé. Kurt's singing was wonderful, and his flying skills in the harness were even more wonderful. The old people loved every second of it.
Until the rope snapped. Kurt was in midair, flipping and jumping and doing all kinds of tricks, until the cords that held him up broke without any kind of a warning, sending Kurt toppling down onto the hard wood stage.
Everyone was frozen in their seat for a second, waiting for a response from Kurt. Blaine tried to see, but the nursing home citizens were quickly being herded out of the room, so he didn't have room to walk.
He was finally able to make his way to the stage, but Blaine's legs felt like jelly. What if Kurt was really hurt and needed to go to the hospital? Blaine hadn't been able to see what angle he landed at, but what if he had broken a bone or hit his head?
Blaine finally heard Kurt's strangled cry for help before he actually saw him. A few of the nurses as well as Maggie were trying to help him, but Blaine managed to squeeze past them to get to his injured fiancé.
Kurt sobbed inconsolably, and Blaine figured he had to be terrified and shocked from the fall more than anything. His nose was bleeding, and his split lip seemed to be causing him the most concern.
Blaine immediately took his hand and sat next to Kurt's head, brushing his hair off of his forehead and trying to clean his face up a little.
"Blaine," Kurt choked in between hiccupping cries. "Ow…"
"It's okay," Blaine soothed. "You're okay, Kurt. Can you sit up? I'm right here, it's okay now."
Kurt tried to push himself up, but cried out when he put weight on his hand. Blaine helped him and let Kurt rest his head on his shoulder, trying to figure out his other injuries.
"Where else does it hurt?" Blaine asked, keeping his arms wrapped protectively around Kurt.
"My head hurts," Kurt moaned, breaking down again. Blaine tried to shush him, but his cries became louder and more desperate each time. He was to the point of hyperventilating, and Blaine knew he had to get him calmed down.
"Kurt, you have to breathe," Blaine said, squeezing his hand. "We can go get your head looked at, but you have to be able to breathe."
Kurt managed to take in a shaky breath and let it out slowly, and Blaine rubbed his back in slow circles as he watched Kurt slowly settle.
"My chest a-and my wrist…" he trailed off, struggling to speak with his busted lip. Blaine looked at his arm, and noticed the slight swelling in his left wrist. He had probably tried to break his fall that way, and Blaine wouldn't be surprised if he had some broken ribs.
"There's a small hospital just a few blocks away," one of the nurses offered. "They have an emergency room and can take a look at him."
Blaine knew Kurt was going to hate going to the ER, but they had no other option. Blaine thanked the woman and tried to get Kurt moving along.
"Kurt, can you stand?" Blaine asked. "I'll help you."
He slowly got Kurt to his feet, with his fiancé only crying out once. He leaned heavily against Blaine, who kept an arm around his waist. Kurt looked around the room, noticing the empty seats and deserted stage for the first time.
"I ruined the show," Kurt panicked, gripping the collar of Blaine's shirt and crying into it. "I messed it all up."
"Shhh, no you didn't," Blaine assured him. "You did so good, Kurt. Everyone loved it. Can you walk now? I won't let go of you."
Blaine led him out and towards the door, but Kurt's concussion was making him dizzy and nauseous. They had managed about twenty steps when Kurt broke away to get sick in the nearest trashcan. Blaine tried to help him when he started to cry again, but this time Kurt didn't stop.
Getting to the hospital took longer than it needed to, mostly because Kurt wouldn't cooperate when it was time to get in the cab, which led to another breakdown. Blaine insisted to Kurt that he wasn't able to walk three blocks, and it was only after that when Kurt managed to calm himself down a little and just let Blaine take care of him.
Naturally, everything about the emergency room terrified Kurt, especially after his assault just a month earlier. He was still in a considerable amount of pain, and therefore unable to think rationally. It wasn't until the nurse gave him some pain medicine that Kurt finally began to relax.
"I didn't know I had fallen till I hit the ground," Kurt rambled incoherently. The painkillers were making him sleepy and loose. "I thought I was dead for a minute."
Blaine smiled down at him, thankful Kurt wasn't hurting anymore and that he was far from dead.
"I think you'll be okay," Blaine assured him, holding his hand the entire time.
Kurt was worried he would have to spend the night in the hospital, but in all they only spent about three hours at the hospital from start to finish. Kurt left with a black wrist brace, three stitches in his lip, some prescription painkillers for his broken ribs and headaches, and orders to take it easy but not go to sleep until that night, due to his concussion.
Blaine had to help him all the way back to the loft, and he stayed with Kurt for the rest of the evening, attending to his every need and trying to make him comfortable, even when he was in pain.
He was just so thankful Kurt was going to be okay. After his attack and the harness scare, Blaine knew he was lucky he hadn't been seriously hurt yet. But, after everything Kurt had gone through in his young life so far, Blaine had no doubts that he could make it through anything.
Author's Notes:
I found this prompt yesterday morning and couldn't stop thinking about it all day, so thanks to the anon who left it! I love all of your prompts though, and am slowly working my way through the huge list I have!
In other news, I'm going out of town again! A week from tomorrow I'll be gone for two and a half weeks, only to get home just in time for school to start. I'm going to work on as many prompts as I can this week, but things like summer reading and back to school shopping are sort of getting in the way (I'll be a junior in high school, for the curious.)
So yes. I'm also working on a brand new story, as well! If I finish it this week I'll start to post as soon as I'm done. Jess has read the first two chapters and approves of it, so I think y'all will too! (It's a lot less confusing than my current story. I would scrap that one due to its lack of success, but I've already wasted my time writing it.)
But anyways, if you have any prompts get them in to me this week! I swear I'm going to keep up writing this school year and not fall off the face of the earth like I kind of did last year, so keep up the prompts and lovely reviews and I promise I am yours!
