Kurt hadn't previously known he was prone to seasickness. He wasn't fully aware until they were on the boat and already off, and it was too late to turn back.
The cruise had been Blaine's idea. The kids were old enough to enjoy a vacation, and with the freezing March weather in New York, the four of them realized they needed a getaway.
So that's what they did. And they wound up in Puerto Rico for spring break, at sea for a day before docking in Barbados. None of them had been on a cruise before, hence Kurt's obliviousness to his vulnerability to seasickness.
It started the first morning of the cruise. Kurt woke up feeling "off." But perhaps it was just because he had two small children jumping on him and Blaine to wake them up.
"Daddy!" Micah shrieked. "Maddie kicked me all night long."
"I'm hungry!" Madeline whined, grabbing Blaine's curls and forcing his eyes open. "Wake up, Papa! I want to go swimming."
Blaine picked up his daughter and sat up, holding her on his lap so she couldn't tug on his hair more.
"We can't go swimming in the ocean," he told her. "I know it looks pretty, but that has to wait until tomorrow. We can go in the pool today, though. Remember the big water slide?"
"I wanna do the slide!" Micah cried, flopping down on top of Kurt. He moaned, and the six-year-old rolled off of him energetically, and went to change out of his pajamas and into his swimsuit.
"Not yet," Blaine said to him. "We have to eat breakfast first. Put shorts on then we can change after we eat." Blaine stood up to get the kids ready for the day, but Kurt remained in bed, huddled under the unfamiliar covers, curling up on his side and hiding his face in his thin pillow.
"Babe, you coming?" Blaine asked, putting a hand on Kurt's back.
Kurt opened his eyes and tried to sit up, but was overcome by a wave of nausea. He didn't want to let it stop him, though. He refused to miss out on his family vacation by being sick.
"I'm up," he mumbled, yawning and getting up to change. He helped get the kids ready, and they finally made it up to breakfast.
Kurt was hoping that some fresh air and food would help his situation, but he only started to feel worse after eating.
"Daddy, I want to swim," Micah whined loudly, laying his head down on the breakfast table dramatically. He was definitely Kurt's child.
"Eat all of your eggs," Kurt told him, even though just the idea of eggs made his stomach twist and turn. He wanted to lie down and sleep it off for days. "When you finish then we'll take you to swim."
Micah happily ate the rest of his food, and Madeline crawled around on Kurt's lap, not-so-sneakily taking pieces of his fruit and reaching up for Blaine so she could play with his un-gelled hair some more.
"Come on," Blaine told his son. "Let's go get your swimsuit on, then we'll go on the water slide. You, me, and Maddie."
Kurt was thankful he wasn't included in that. He could barely manage the walk from the dining room to their cabin without falling over from his vertigo. That, combined with his relentless nausea and oncoming headache left him feeling miserable before their fun could even start. He had suffered from carsickness and motion sickness on airplanes, but never imagined he would fall victim to seasickness.
Blaine sent the kids to find their swimsuits and sandals, and Kurt slid into their bed, moaning into his pillow.
"I was afraid this would happen," Blaine sighed, rubbing his back. "I packed you plenty of medicine, just in case. Just take it easy this morning. I'll take them down to the water slide so you can have a few hours to rest. We'll come back and check on you before lunch."
"Thank you," Kurt murmured, accepting the handful of pills and bottle of water Blaine offered him. His husband kissed him on the cheek and quietly got their kids ready to go.
"Why isn't Daddy coming?" Kurt heard his son ask.
"Daddy doesn't feel good," Blaine explained. "He's going to take a nap, so be quiet until we get out into the hallway, okay?"
"Okay," they both agreed. Kurt was already dozing, but heard Blaine lead them out, and then it was silent.
He woke up to chaos, though. Kurt heard his daughter's crying and Blaine shushing her, and he sat up to see what had happened.
"I didn't mean for her to wake you up," Blaine apologized. "She got sunburned on her shoulders and said it hurt when I tried to lay her down. How do you feel?"
Kurt didn't feel like throwing up for the first time all day. So it was an improvement.
"I feel like I want to get off this stupid boat," Kurt mumbled. Blaine laughed and rubbed his back.
"Tomorrow morning," Blaine told him. "Tomorrow we'll dock and be in Barbados. I bet after you've been back on land for a day you'll be better. The kids are gonna lay down for a little bit and try to nap. They wore themselves out in the pool. Do you want to go up and eat some lunch? Or have me bring you something?"
Kurt shook his head. He knew if he ate anything it would only come right back up.
"I think I want to nap, too," he admitted. "You go have fun, though. Stop worrying about me. I'll take medicine and we can have a nice dinner this evening."
Blaine moved to lie down next to Kurt. "I'm not gonna leave you here and go out alone. I'm tired, too. We can all rest for a little while."
Kurt certainly couldn't complain about having his husband by his side. Even after dozing off and on all morning, he still felt exhausted and dizzy everytime he held his head up. So, he remained faithfully glued to his pillow and blanket, that is, until his eyes flew open, and he knew he only had seconds to make it to the tiny bathroom before he got sick.
He heard Blaine come in after him, and force him to swallow some pills and a glass of water.
"You're okay," Blaine said. "Come on, get back in bed. I'll order you something to eat. Do you want some crackers?"
"No," Kurt whined. He laid back down, but the covers no longer felt comforting and warm. Instead he felt nauseous, uncomfortable, and hot.
"Papa," Micah murmured, sitting up and rubbing the sleep from his eyes. "What happened? What's wrong with Daddy?"
"Daddy's okay," Blaine reassured his son. "He just feels sick. Kind of like how you felt sick on the airplane ride. Tomorrow we're getting off the boat, though, so he should be okay by then. He can do the water slide with you and play on the beach with you then."
Micah scrambled from his and Madeline's shared bed over to lay down with Kurt. Finally getting to spend some time with his kids helped Kurt feel a little better, even though the rest of the afternoon and evening was spent largely in the bathroom, and eventually the ship's infirmary, where Kurt got some real rest, uninterrupted by crying toddlers or hungry kindergartners.
And, in the morning, they docked in Barbados, and finally had a sick-free day on the beach. But, naturally, as soon as they set sail again for Grenada, the next stop on the itinerary, the horrible seasickness hit Kurt again. At least, though, he had a pretty amazing little family to get him through it.
Author's Notes:
This chapter is for my friend Jess, who is on a cruise right now! I am extremely jealous. Having never been on a cruise myself before, I did some research so I hope what I wrote is accurate enough! Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
In other news, I just got some great prompts in my Tumblr askbox. I'm working on a Blangst one right now! It may even turn into two or three parts, depending on how people like it! My busy weekend is finally over, and I should have much more time to write this week!
