It was another cloudy day in Seattle, which didn't make it any better than Meredith once again waking up to an argument. In the first week, she was a surgical intern, she had taken in two strays in the form of George and Izzie at the request of her sister. She didn't want roommates but Maggie had insisted that they needed somewhere to stay and that it would be good for her and Meredith to have other people living with them. "Maggie please, George doesn't even use that closest, I mean in the two weeks we've lived here he hasn't even unpacked his bad, and-and-" she was cut off by George who refused to swap rooms with her ever since day one. "AND I still haven't gotten a free minute to unpack with you constantly asking me to change rooms!" Before things escalated further Meredith got out of bed to calm them down. "What the hell is going on out here, our shift doesn't start for another two hours and you guys are already awake and giving out!" "Oh thank god you're here," Maggie said with a sigh of relief as she turned the other way and locked the bathroom door. "Mer there's like no space, I mean can we at least unpack your mom's crap if she's not going to be back anytime soon?" "I second that," George said with a tired look on his face. Meredith stared at the two of them before grabbing the coffee mug out of Izzy's hand and turned around to lock herself in her bedroom. "No!?" Izzie exclaimed, "Mer come on I've almost broken my foot half a dozen times because of those boxes!" Izzie shouted through the door. "I'm sleeping!" Meredith replied knowing that they'd eventually go away. Izzie started at George before taking his mug out of his hands and walking to her room shutting the door behind her "Hey!" he exclaimed, "that was the last of the coffee!".
At the hospital, Cristina had already arrived before her other colleagues and begged a hesitant Bailey to be allowed on the case of a woman with stage IV pancreatic cancer in hopes of being able to scrub in with . The woman, Cristina noted had been very observant of her and was able to read through Cristina's emotionless expression as she examined her before Dr. Burke had arrived. Eventually, the Chief and Dr. Burke walked into the room as he told Dr. Yang that the patient, nurse Liz Fowler was to be treated with the best care around. He eventually turned to Liz and expressed to her his hope of having Ellis Grey's daughter be on her case along with Dr. Yang. Liz turned to the Chief and laughed "After 5 years as her scrub nurse, I think I met Ellis a lot more than they met either of us." Richard looked at Liz confused for a moment before looking back at Burke and Yang, "update me on her status later." "Will do Chief," Dr. Burke said with a smile.
When the other interns arrived at the hospital Cristina made her way into the locker room as to not let on that she had started early. She met Meredith in the locker room and joking said: "How's McDreamy this morning?" Meredith had tried to resist Derek for the past few weeks but every time she did they always ended up in an elevator, alone.. and together. Meredith smirked at her "shut up, why are you so happy?", "Oh no reason, just happened to be in the right place at the right time... you know you should learn from me, maybe you won't end up in elevators as much," Cristina said sarcastically as Meredith sighed at her friend who had made her run-ins with Derek a long-running joke. On the other side of the lockers, Izzie was still trying to convince Maggie to clear up the boxes in the hallway. Maggie, however, ignored her as she put her buzzing phone into her locker "not today" she sighed seeing the name pop up on her phone. "Nice tatt, they give that to you in model school", Alex smirked. Izzie looked at him and rolled her eyes as Maggie thought he was talking about her before realizing who it was aimed at. "Not as nice as the 666 on your skull Karev", Izzie replied before slipping on her scrub top. then burst through to the intern's lockers and assigned them their cases for the day. "Older Grey, Karev, and O'Malley, you're with Shepherd in the pit, "Stevens and other Grey you're with me today." "Great" Maggie thought to herself as she knew Izzie would take this opportunity to harass her even further about Ellis's things.
At the nurse's station, Bailey handed the interns Mr. Humphreys chart and told them to examine him before surgery which usually meant the basics of checking his temperature and vitals and then waiting on the attending before explaining what would happen during the procedure. Walking down to the pit the attention of the interns was adverted to a man lying across the gurney with nails in his skull as Dr. Shepherd tended to him. "Nails.. seven nails", he stated as the man lay conscious on the bed. "I-I can't see!" he cried, "I-I can't see anything!". Meredith quickly ran to the patient's side and grabbed his arm in an attempt to calm him down "What's his name?" she said calmly trying not to alert him to the danger he would be in if he moved any of the nails in his skull. "Jorge Cruz, his wife is on her way" called a nurse. "Alright, Mr. Cruz, we need you to stay still while Dr. Shepherd completes your exam, can you tell me a little bit about your wife while he does that?" Derek gave a quick smile to Meredith. "Uhhh she's gonna kill me for starters". Derek soon turned to his interns and asked them what their main concern would be right now considering his condition, Meredith soon looked up from Jorge and stated "an infection." "Doctor we've just received a call that the CT machines are down, something to do with an update to the system." "Dammit," Derek said frustrated. He soon turned to the interns "what's our alternative?". Meredith who was trying to keep Mr. Cruz calm didn't have time to answer the question. Soon he had sent Alex and George down to dig up information on previous cases like Jorge while he took him for an alternative scan with Meredith.
As Izzie and Maggie were on their way to the patient's room, Izzie as Maggie had predicted kept complaining about the boxes and George's room being bigger than hers. To avoid the rest of the conversation she told Izzie that she had to go to the bathroom before seeing the patient and told Izzie to go ahead. On her way to the bathroom, she had turned a corner and bumped into what had felt like a brick wall before her pager went crashing to the floor and their charts flew to the side. "Hey, sorry, let me get that for you," both of them said as they reached down for each other's things before bumping heads and eventually standing up. As they both faced each other Maggie was met by a smile as she began rubbing her head. "Sorry for uh making a mess of your charts," she said as she handed them to him before being left speechless by his smile. To her in those few moments he emitted a god complex he was tanned and looked around 6"2 which was considered massive to her petite 5"3 frame. As his deep green eyes took over her attention she didn't even hear him mutter something before handing her back her pager and leaving her with a smile. Maggie had forgotten about her bathroom lie and headed straight for the patient's room. There she found Izzie standing outside looking stressed. Maggie walked up to her forgetting about the other doctor she had met and went to see if her roommate was alright. "Hey, is everything okay?" she asked Izzie with a reassuring smile. "I'm a model.. or I was" Izzie sighed and appeared more frustrated before looking at Maggie in the eyes. "He won't let me examine him because I was a model, alright!" she let out another frustrated sigh. "Listen Izzie, I'll take care of it.. who knows, maybe he just doesn't want a female doctor on his case?" Izzie looked at Maggie with her saddened eyes knowing that wasn't the case before smiling at her and letting her go in. She had worked her ass off throughout college and med school to be left debt free and this was how the world was going to repay her. She soon set off to find Dr. Bailey in hopes that she could be assigned to another case. As Maggie finished checking his vitals she heard the door open behind her as she was updating his chart. Soon the new person in the room began talking and Maggie had recognized it as the man from earlier. "Hi Mr. Humphry, my name is Dr. Ryker and I'll be performing your biopsy today." He said with a smile as Mr. Humphry turned his head the other way already feeling embarrassed about it. "I'll have the nurses prep you for the OR and we should have you out of there in next to no time." Dr. Ryker then looked at Maggie "Doctor, a word outside?" Maggie nodded and followed him outside of the patient's room closing the door quietly behind her. Dr. Ryker then turned to her with his arms crossed "As you can tell the patient is already very nervous and embarrassed about this procedure, so to avoid any other complications from him I would like it if you could assist the nurses when they bring him up for pre-op." "That was it!" Maggie said to herself as she internally shrieked. However, keeping a straight face she looked at him "of course doctor." Dr. Ryker smirked as he put out his hand to her "I'm afraid we never had a formal introduction earlier, my names Charlie, and if you can't tell already I'm a urology fellow." Maggie kept cool and reciprocated by putting out her hand "Maggie Grey if you can't already tell I'm an intern." Charlie chuckled "Well I hope your pagers alright , again I'm sorry for not seeing you." Maggie smiled back at him "What's a surgeon's pager without a few bumps?" Charlie smiled again at the intern who had kept him intrigued ever since they had both bumped heads and collected each other's things before leaving to check on his other patients.
As Meredith scrubbed in with Derek they received a call from George and Alex about the previous cases, Derek realizing they were no help took a deep breath and hoped the procedure would run as smooth as it possibly could. He looked at Meredith with a smile "Alright everyone, it's a beautiful day to save lives." Alex was waiting by the nurse's station knowing that the real surgery wouldn't begin until about 15 minutes and decided to pass his time by flicking through one of the magazines, what he had found led him to the photocopier with an evil spawn look on his face. The surgery ran smoothly with no bleeders but something about his accident kept ticking Meredith's brain, who was on a high from the successful surgery insisted they wait a day and allow him to heal a bit before getting an MRI.
Cristina, on the other hand, was left disappointed at the fact she missed out on the case with a nail gun and moped as she took Nurse Fallon for an MRI. On their way to the MRI, they were stopped by numerous members of staff all of whom asked Liz how she was doing and was looking after her properly. Cristina rolled her eyes as she pushed Liz towards the MRI and was not too pleased when she saw the results. She immediately left to find Dr. Burke to tell him that she would need treatment soon if they wanted to stop the progression of her cancer.
Unable to find in time before the procedure, Izzie waited outside the operating room and waited until she arrived. "What are you doing out here, wheres Grey!" she exclaimed. Izzie who was nervous at Dr. Bailey's tone had asked her could she be assigned another case as the patient didn't want her in the room. Bailey rolled her eyes in disbelief "Stevens walk behind me." As soon as they entered the room however Mr. Humphrey started to lose his cool and Maggie tried to calm him down as a confused Dr. Bailey and looked at Stevens who then exited the room. After obtaining the sample, Bailey left the room and handed it to Izzie who she told to run it down by the lab and collect the results then bring them to her. She then looked at Stevens who was already embarrassed at the fact that Mr. Humphrey had reacted in that way "Do you know him personally? Is that why he acted like a cat in a bag?" Bailey enquired. Izzie sighed "He noticed me from a Bethany whisper ad, it was shot last year but it hasn't come out until now." Bailey looked at her surprised, "so she was a model" she thought to herself. "Stevens, you're a doctor, you're one of his doctors, if that man cannot accept that then you need to in a professional manner lay the facts out to him." Izzie nodded as she headed towards the labs. Meanwhile, Meredith was waiting outside the OR for Maggie to finish up and she soon caught her coming out of the room laughing to . "Maggie!" she called as two heads turned. Maggie then turned to Dr. Ryker and said something to him before walking over to Meredith. "Taking a page out of my book I see?" Maggie looked shocked. "Relax I'm joking" she giggled. Maggie let out a sigh of relief, she would never take a page out of Meredith's book, would she? "What did you want to ask me?" Maggie said with a brief smile "How was your surgery by the way?". Meredith smiled at her younger sister who had always put people before herself. " He survived, but we can talk more about that later" she stated. "Ellis called, an old scrub nurse who somehow survived the devil's residency with her has been admitted and she wants us to meet the lady and send her regards." Maggie rolled her eyes " Typical Mom, always sending people to do the sympathy work." The sister's arrived at Liz's room just as a crowd of nurses was leaving. Liz immediately recognized Meredith and then Maggie who came in behind her. "Ellis Greys doppelgängers as I live and breathe." "You must've been our mother's scrub nurse, Nurse Fallon, right?" Maggie said as she extended her hand to greet her while Meredith stood back "Our mother sends her regards" Meredith said quietly. Maggie smiled "She would've come herself but unfortunately she's on the other side of the country doing what she does best." Liz smiled at Maggie and then at Meredith, "So I heard Ellis had a daughter after she left Seattle, but that's not you is it?" she asked Maggie with a confused look on her face as Meredith surveyed the woman. "Yeah, I was born thankfully before she started her fellowship," Maggie said with a laugh. Soon her pager began beeping and Maggie apologized before leaving and soon she turned her gaze to Meredith. "So your mother remarried?" Meredith stood at the door and gave a brief smile at Liz, "The woman could never cheat on surgery, Maggie was uh well you know it's kinda difficult to explain." Liz smiled at Meredith before she made up an excuse to leave. Although Liz knew Ellis, she also knew of Ellis and the Chief, as would anyone who spent hours with them in an OR.
The next day began and as Meredith was checking on the progress of Mr. Cruz who had made a complete recovery from his surgery, Izzie, George, and Maggie headed for the lockers. Once they had turned the corner they could see a commotion in the locker room and once they entered they could see Alex in the middle of it all. Plastered all over the locker room, was pictures of Izzie from numerous photoshoots. Maggie's face dropped knowing that Izzie was already struggling with a patient and felt sorry for the poor girl. But before she could offer her any help, Izzie had already gone face to face with Alex and had stripped down to her underwear roaring at him about how her life as a model didn't leave her as broke as him after med school before she ran into the bathroom. The room went silent as Maggie and George tried their best to remove as many pictures as they could while Alex stood there with a smirk. After awhile Izzie came out of the bathroom to find Maggie sitting there waiting. "Mr. Humphreys surgery is in an hour," she said silently. Izzie knew what she had to do if she was going to be taken seriously, and headed towards his room informing Maggie that she would see her in the OR.
Liz awoke to Richard checking on her vitals and asking a nurse to refill her IV bag. He smiled at the woman who was once able to scare any new intern by just a look, that was until of course, she met Ellis Grey who could scare any nurse and the two became close friends with Ellis choosing Liz as her scrub nurse for almost every surgery she had as a resident in Seattle Grace. Liz smiled back at Richard, "don't you have a hospital to run Chief?" Her irises were almost completely yellow and her voice had weakened a lot since the previous day. Richard smiled at her "You know someone can run a hospital and check on patients at the same time right?" Liz smiled and let out a small cough, "so when were you gonna tell me?" she asked rolling on to her back and staring up at the Chief. "Tell you what Liz?" he smiled yet again at the now frail woman. "That Ellis and you had a child," she said bluntly before letting out a cough. Richard grabbed the glass of water and a sponge from the tray at the end of her bed and began the slowly apply it to her lips in hopes that it would ease her coughing. He laughed "Merediths, not my daughter, you know that… she's a lot like Ellis though, I have a feeling she'll make a great surgeon one day like her mother with whatever specialty she chooses." Liz looked at him judgingly this time "I meant her other daughter, Maggie, she said her name was, Ellis had her before she started her fellowship at mass gen-" she let out another cough before continuing, "everyone knew how you two were, and that girl is not her ex-husbands I can tell you for certain". Liz closed her eyes, she was wrecked from the toll this cancer was taking on her body. Richard sat at the side of the bed frozen, before slowly getting up and putting the cup of water down. "The other Dr. Grey, it couldn't have been, he would've noticed it in her file, surely he would have." Weber soon found in the hallways, he had asked him to act as interim chief for the week of the interviews as he had to go to Los Angeles that week for an important conference in which he would be speaking at. "Preston?" he asked with a concerned look on his face, finished talking with the nurse and then looked up at the chief. "Yes Chief," he said with his arms crossed as he noticed the worried look in the Chiefs face. "When you were interviewing the interns, you never mentioned to me that there would be two of Ellis Greys' daughters working here." Preston shrugged " I didn't think it mattered, both had exceptional results and references, the younger of the two even got into Med school at the age of 18, Margaret I think her name is." The Chief looked at him one more time before walking away. It was impossible, Ellis would have told him, she wouldn't have left If she knew, the Ellis Grey he knew was not that much of a coward. As he made his way into his office he soon opened the filing cabinet and pulled out both Meredith and Maggie's files to compare them but seeing her photo was just enough. He sat down at his desk with the head in his hand and began to blame himself.
Meredith and Derek had decided to take their so-called miracle patient up for his MRI, after seeing how well he had progressed in the day neither had any fear of what was to come next until it did. While waiting for the results to appear Derek began to ask Meredith questions. "So what's your favorite drink apart from tequila?" he asked with a smile. Meredith rolled her eyes at him "So what's your favorite bed apart from a living room floor?" However before either of them could laugh, ' scans appeared on the screen and Meredith's gut feeling was right. With his wife by his side, he had decided that he wanted it out after hearing of the damage it might cause in the future even if he only has a few years left to live he still wanted to remember them.
Cristina was monitoring Liz closely as she noticed she was declining rapidly. "You still here?" she asked with a weakened tone, "Well you never told me you weren't going to get the Whipple," she said softly as she walked towards Liz's bed but before she could check her heart and breath sounds, Liz soon began to weaken almost entirely before her monitor began to make the dreaded flat-lining noise as she held Cristina's hand. Cristina then slammed on the button above her bed calling a code blue as the nurses flooded the room with the machinery. However, when the realized it was Liz who had signed a DNR previously, they all stood still. Cristina had shouted at them to bring the defibrillator over and she began chest compressions before the Chief and Dr. Burke ran in. Pulling Cristina away from Liz, he checked her for a heartbeat and eventually called it. The Chief had looked on as Preston held her hand tightly and wrote down the time of death in her chart before signing it off. He looked at the chief and put his hand on his shoulder before leaving the room to find Cristina. Richard stood in the room frozen and now looked at the woman who had rocked his world when she informed him just hours earlier that he fathered a child with Ellis Grey, a child he was yet to meet.
After finishing their surgery Maggie and Izzie scrubbed out with Dr. Bailey, "you know Stevens, next time that man gets a rejection he'll be thinking of you, but hopefully for different reasons" Dr. Bailey said with a smirk as she left the room. Izzie and Maggie laughed, "Hey, so are you coming to Joes after this?" Izzie said with a smile as she turned to Maggie. On a regular night off Maggie would have declined and opted to go home and sleep but after Izzie's day she couldn't say no to her "Yeah sure, I'll meet you over there." Izzie dried her hands and then left the room as walked in, "Good job today Grey." Maggie chuckled "Me? You did all the work, you let him keep his function." Dr. Ryker turned to her "I meant that you helped a colleague, that Dr. Karev is only a cowboy, give him a few months and he'll calm down." Maggie handed him the paper towels to dry off his hands. "But you know, I suppose I did save that guy from a future of ED medication didn't I?" Ryker said sarcastically, as Maggie left the room with a smile on her face.
At Joe's Meredith had ordered the group a round of drinks as they all sat down to joke about their day. In the bar, Alex sat alone nursing his beer as he watched the group envious of the friendship they all had. After a few more rounds Meredith looked at Maggie drunk and whispered: "look our boyfriends are playing together." Maggie rolled her eyes at Meredith as she saw Shepherd and Ryker playing a game of darts in the corner. She then turned her attention to George and Izzie who were both too drunk to keep their eyes open. She turned to the group and said she was going to the bathroom, at the bar she asked Joe to call them a cab and then walked towards the bathroom. All stalls were full and she couldn't hold it in anymore so she ran into the guy's bathroom which was thankfully empty but still gross. Before leaving she washed her hands quickly and left. However yet again she bumped into what felt like a wall but was . Instead of fumbling this time the two caught each other's eyes he let the thought that she came out of the guys' bathroom slip through his mind as he softly planted his lips on hers. The two not breaking their embrace walked slowly back into the bathroom she had come from and locked the door. Meanwhile, a drunk Meredith had made her way over to Derek and smiled at him as he was left alone now as was Meredith after she sent George and Izzie home in a cab. The two of them exited the bar without anyone noticing and made their way towards Meredith's house as she had left Maggie a message.
Back at the hospital, Burke had finally found Cristina staring into an OR gallery, he turned her and noticed the tears in her eyes. She like him had grown attached to Liz and knew that such an attachment to her would take a great toll on them if they didn't let her go. Burke looked at Cristina in the eyes and held her tightly as they both mourned the loss of Liz. Meanwhile, in his office, the Chief took another sip from his hip flask as he looked closely at the picture of Maggie and then adverted his eyes to the picture on his desk. It had only been taken last year, and in it, a teenage boy kneeled with his helmet reset on one of his knees with his smile taking over the entire picture. His smile the same as Maggies, in the picture. Suddenly his phone rang, it was his secretary on the other end, "Hi, Chief I have Ellis Grey on the other line as you requested, do you want me to patch her through?" Richard took another sip from his flask, "Go ahead."
