Chapter One
Loving someone, trusting them with you heart and hoping to God they don't break it, they say that's the hardest thing to do. As I lay here next to the person I love the most, even more than Mon-el, I have to agree with the people who has said that. She's not stupid, Lena, she knows I'm hiding something from her. I mean how often can I leave the warmth of our bed in the middle of night to save someone, of course she doesn't know that's why I'm leaving, which means she's thinking something even worse. I would never betray her like that obviously but without knowing all the facts what else is she supposed to think?
I've thought about it a thousand times, telling Lena about my secret. About sitting her down and just letting everything out, but then I remember about when she told me that if she ever found out someone was lying to her again, she'd never be able to trust them again. I could never live in a world where Lena doesn't love me, where when she looks at me her eyes light up and her smile goes ear from ear. I know that if she finds out I've been lying that look of love will turn to a look of hate, and that's not something I can see, it'd destroy me.
"Hey," her sleepy voices pulls me from my thoughts and I look over at her and let a weak smile cross my lips. "How long have you been up?"
I'm assuming she can see the worry in my eyes and can tell I haven't been sleeping for a long time. Which is the truth, I've been up from almost two hours, but I didn't want to leave the warmth of our bed or the comfort of her presences next to me. "Not long," I lie as I lean over and kiss her softly. "I couldn't bring myself to leave your side."
She smiles and pushes me away as she moves the blankets off her body. "Don't sweet talk me," she says in a joking tone. "Because I will make you late for work."
"Well you are the boss," I comments getting out of bed after and moving to the other side of the back and wrapping my arms around her from behind. She turns in my arms so she's face to face with me and presses her soft lips to mine. I smile against her lips as I take in the complete taste that is Lena Luthor, the taste only I know.
"Funny," she comments as she pulls away slightly to look at me. "I don't know how I got so lucky." I press my lips to hers again pulling her body as tightly to me as possible. God, I love this woman, what am I so afraid of, why can't I come clean about being Supergirl. "What's wrong?" she says looking at me with concern in her eyes.
"Nothing," I say shaking my head and looking down at the floor. "I'm just so happy…you make me so happy." I say looking back up at her. "I don't know what I would do if I ever lost you," I say suddenly before I'm able to stop myself. I'm not ready, not here, not like this.
"Kara," she cups my face with her hand. I don't understand how she's never figured out herself that I'm Supergirl, she sees me every night and every morning without my glasses on and she still hasn't put two and two together. "You will never loose me; I couldn't imagine a single day without you by my side." I smile into her palm and gently place a kiss on her hand. "Now," she says in a lighter tone and she pulls away from me. "Better get ready for work; I hear your boss doesn't tolerate tardiness." She winks as she closes the bathroom door behind her, I listen and I can hear the shower turn on.
This is my life, Lena and I. We've been together for a little over four months now and successfully living together for one. I opted out of my rent and moved into Lena's place. At first I was afraid that she would discover my secret, considering I don't sleep with glasses on. Thankfully Jon has helped me a couple times by pretending to be Supergirl while I was home with Lena. But I still know that I am risking it and sooner rather than later I need to tell Lena my secret. Just as I'm about to sneak into the shower with her my cell phone rings, climbing over the bed I grab it and notice Alex's name on the caller ID. "Alex, what's up?" I roll over onto my back as I press my phone to my ear.
"Kara, you're needed at the DEO, ASAP, something's happened," she says in a hurried tone.
"I'll be right there," I quickly close my phone and jump out of the bed. Listening carefully I can still hear the shower running, in Supergirl fashion I change quickly and open the bathroom door pretending to button my shirt. Putting some toothpaste on my toothbrush I start brushing my teeth, taking a second to peek up at the mirror to see Lena looking at me. "Alex called, she said she needs some sister time, apparently her and Maggie had a fight," I rinse out my mouth as placing my toothpaste back in its holder, while turning around to look at her.
"That's a shame," she says pulling the shower door open revealing her naked, wet body. "I was hoping to be able to feed you some breakfast," she comments as she climbs out of the shower, reaching for the towel and wrapping her around her body.
She walks out of the bathroom as my widened eyes stare at her. Before I can give it a second thought I speed over to her and wrap my arms around her again, turning her around, and gently pushing her onto the bed. At first she's shocked by the speed but then my lips are on hers halting any questions she may have about how I got to her so quickly. "You drive me crazy Ms. Luthor," I say pulling away from her and getting back into a standing position. "You…me…dinner tonight, wear something nice," I say adjusting my top while I look at her. There isn't anything I wouldn't do for this woman, and tonight, tonight I'm going to make sure that she knows me better than anyone ever has.
"I can't wait," she says biting her bottom lip as she looks me up and down. "Make sure to give Alex my best," she smiles and she walks over to me and gives me a gentle kiss on my cheek. I smile and then turn and walk out of the bedroom, and then out of the house. She needs to know the truth about me, that's the only way we're going to take it to the next level.
I arrive at the D.E.O within seconds of leaving Lena's and Alex is standing in front of the wall of screens talking to Jon and Whinn. As I look at the screens it appears that they're monitoring Lena's mother, as I approaching them I try to remember when Lena's mother got out of prison. Alex turns around with a worried look on her face as I approaching. Whinn turns and walks around the table in the other direction, Jon is approaching with Alex.
"What's going on?" I ask indicating the direction Whinn went, even though I already know why he walked away when I got here. Things haven't been the same between Whinn and I since Lena and I started seeding one another. I've always known that Whinn has had a thing for me, and once I thought maybe we could try it, but then Lena came into my life and I never looked back. "And when did Lena's mother get released from prison?"
"She escaped," Alex says looking back at the screen and then back to me. "We don't know when and we don't know how because she's been flying under the radar…"
"Unit now," I finish for her walking past both them and towards the screens. "What makes now so special, what's she planning?"
"That's what we're trying to figure out," Jon says.
"Look Kara," I turn my attention to Alex, a concerned look on her face. "I know you and Lena haven't gotten close…"
"Close?" I say turning completely to look at Alex crossing my arms over my chest. "She's my girlfriend, Alex. We live together," I comment shaking my hand. "I would say 'close' is an understatement."
"How well do you really know Lena," she says with concern in her voice.
"You want to know if Lena's been in contact with her mother," I say before she can say any more. None of them trust Lena, I can't say I blame them, they don't know her and they're only going based of the Luthor name. "I think I would know if Lena was talking to her mother," I saw with a little laugh. Wouldn't I know? We live together after all.
"Would you," James says from behind me. "The Luthor's are excellent at hiding their secrets. Lex hid is hatred from Clark for years; they were even best friends once upon a time."
"Lena and I don't have a secrets," as soon as the words leave my mouth I know what's next.
Alex places her hands on my shoulders. "Except you do. And Lena is a smart woman and she knows when people are lying to her. Do you really think she's completely clueless to you being Supergirl?" Alex pauses and lets go of me. "You live with her Kara, she sees you without your glass…"
"Even if Lena knew I was Supergirl, which she doesn't, she wouldn't betray me by hiding her mother from me. Especially after everything her mother has done to me." I say sternly walking away from them and heading towards the balcony. "Find out what Lena's mother is up to, once you do let me know." I take a deep breath and turn towards the blue skies. "I'll talk to Lena."
L Corp. As I hover outside L Corp I can see Lena sitting at her desk typing away. It's in moments like these that I have come to appreciate the beauty in Lena, her dedication to her work. She cares so much about what she does and how she has the chance to help people. She always has the greater good at mind and that's one of the reasons why I don't understand why no one trusts her. She called the cops on her own mother; she's helped the D.E.O more than once. I start to move forward when I notice Lena's assistant walk through the door and behind her...
Lena's mother.
I move back, surprised, and what's even more surprising is that Lena doesn't seem surprised to see her mother at all. She welcomes her with open arms and a hug. What? I don't even know what to think, how could Lena do this to me, how could she not tell me about this? I focus my hearing on Lena's office, since Lena and I started dating I stopped ease dropping on Lena's conversations, I trusted her to be open and honest with me, but I need to know what is being said.
"Mother," Lena says in greeting and her mother enters the office behind Lena's assistant. "I can't say I'm surprised to see you out of prison," Lena bows her head. "Who did you have to pay off this time?"
I take in a sign of relief, Lena didn't know about her mother's escape, she hasn't been lying to me and hiding her mother behind my back. I left a soft smile cross my lips as focus my hearing back on the office.
"Oh Lena dear," she says sitting in one of the chairs across of Lena's desk. "I didn't have to pay off anyone; after all I am innocent of all charges that were brought against me."
Lena laughs. "I was there when you tried to kill Supergirl. I testified against you. You're far from innocent."
"Innocent until proven guilty Lena. Your testimony was not enough to put me away, since other people came to my defense against your accusations." She smiles as she looks at Lena. "You should have known better Lena; after all you are a Luthor."
"And what a disappointment I must be to you," Lena pauses and looks away from her mother. "What did you come here for?"
I know Lena and I know she is fighting the tears that are threatening to come forward. Lena may play like she's hard on the outside, but Lena has always wanted the love of her mother. Always wanted to make her proud even though she knows that there is no way that she will ever be able to live up to Lex's image in her mother's eyes.
"Can't a mother just come visit her daughter?"
"Not in this family," Lena responds back sharply.
"Cadmus labs," Lena's mother states simply ignoring her daughters tone.
"Cadmus Labs is no more," Lena comments folding her arms over her chest. " I dismantled it after you went to prison for trying to kill a person."
"Supergirl is not a person, Lena my dear." She shakes her head. "She's not even human."
"She's more human than you will ever be."
"Cadmus Labs will rise again with our without your help," she says standing up. "I was hoping that we would be able to set aside our differences and be able to work together, like a family." She pulls her jacket closed and readjusts her purse. "Lex always loved you Lena, he always believed in you. And yet you turn your back on him and his legacy by teaming up with Supergirl. He would be so disappointed."
With that final jab at Lena her mother exist her office, leaving Lena alone. I need to go talk to her. I need to go see her, to comfort her. But I can't go as Supergirl because last time I confronted Lena about her mother as Supergirl I almost lost her. I will never make that mistake again. I fly down into an alley where I quickly change into regular clothes.
"Good Morning Kara," Lena's secretary greets me as I walk past her. Months ago Lena made a point to ensure I was able to enter at any time. Before she even knew me she welcomed me into her life with an open door policy.
"Good Morning Stacey," I smile at the young girl as I walk past her and into Lena's office. Lena looks up as I enter and an instant smile crosses her lips as she pushes away from her desk and walks over to me, arms wrapping around my neck. Instinctively my arms wrap around her waist and I bring my lips to hers. "Hi." I say looking into her eyes with a smile on my face.
"Hey," she comments smirking as she leans back looking into my eyes. "To what do I owe this pleasure?" she says pulling away and moving back to the other side of the desk. I look around her office, at everything except her. How do I bring up her mother being out of prison without causing some kind of argument? "Spill her Kara," she says folding her hands on her desk and looking at me. "You know I can always tell when you're hiding something."
I smirk as I sit in the chair across from Lena. The last time I was this nervous around Lena was when I first let her. I close my eyes remembering that moment. "And what about you Ms. Danvers, I didn't seen your name on the byline."
"Oh I'm not a reporter," I can't take my eyes off of her. The way the red lipstick complements in her white skin and black hair. And when she smiles, those dimples, Ms. Luthor is going to be the end of Kara Danvers.
"Could have fooled me." I open my eyes again to see her looking at me. Oh how far we've come, Lena and I. From strangers, to friends, to lovers. Who would have thought that a Super could fall for a Luthor? Clark wasn't too happy about it at first but he's slowly been coming around to our side, he's starting to see the good in her. Hopefully one day he'll fully accept her and us. "I'm here about your mother."
Her eyes darken, if only for a second, but still they darken at the mention of her mother's name. "There have been reports that she's been released from prison," I comment in a reporter tone hopefully able to ease the slight tension that has fallen between us. I hate that her mother, or any mention of her family, as this effect on us. "Considering our relationship…" I trail off.
"James has asked you to cover the story," she nods getting up from her desk and looking out her window. "I didn't know she was released from prison until this afternoon when she dropped by to see me, surprising considering I helped put her away." She turns back to me, arms folded over her chest. She's not happy, at all. "I don't know what angel James thought he would get by sending you here to ask me about her, but I don't have anything to give you, there is no story here." She turns back to her window. "I think it's time you leave Kara," she comments.
"Lena," I say standing up and moving towards the window. "I didn't mean to upset you." I say wrapping my arms around her from behind. "I told James this was a mistake, he was just looking for a story, there's no reason to blame him." She shrugs away from me, I try to hide the pain in my eyes and in my voice. "Lena…"
"Kara," she pauses. "I think you should go."
"Lena…"
"Go."
I turn and walk around the desk to grab my bag. I move to the door and then turn to look at Lena one more time. "I don't understand why you let your mother cause this rift between us like this." I comment before turning and leaving. I focus my hearing on Lena's office and hear her call secretary. "Stacey, no more visitors today," she pauses. "Not even Kara."
I leave L Corp and head back to the D.E.O., maybe now isn't the best time to tell Lena my secret. Not if something as small as me asking about her mother causes this kind of reaction.
