Chapter Four
When I got to the D.E.O Alex was standing by the stretcher where James was laying. "Why isn't he at the hospital?" I ask as I walk closer. James turns his head and looks at me. I touch his shoulder and give him a small smile. "Are you okay?"
"Just a flesh wound," he comments with a sly smile.
"Who did this?" I ask looking at the screens of the D.E.O where Brainy is currently searching Catco surveillance. "Why would someone do this? You haven't gone out as Guardian in a long time," I comments searching the screens hoping to catch something that the others may not have seen.
Why is this always happening in our lives? Why when one of us is happy something has to come along a through a wrench into everything? I know that my life is supposed to be messy, I knew that the second I put this cape on, but I've notice more and more it happens to everyone. When Alex was happy with Maggie, Alex got kidnapped and almost died. Granted they're happy again now, but that is something that could have ended way differently. When Lena and I got together, she got poisoned and almost died. Again everything worked out and we're happy and stronger now…well at least I hope we are. I'm crossing my fingers hoping that she isn't just playing along to be okay with me being Supergirl, and that she isn't hiding her true feelings.
Either way, every time our lives are looking up, something always seems to come along and crash us right back to reality. Is this always how this is going to be? How long did it take for Clark to finally be happy with Lois, without the world almost ending? "We don't have any leads yet, as far as I can see nothing was caught on camera." Brainy says as he turns around and looks at me. "We have nothing."
"James, did you see anything?" I ask looking back at him as he starts to sit up, a bandage already in place on his shoulder.
"No, I was leaving Catco, and it was dark," he says shaking his head. "But," pausing for a second he looks around at everyone. "There was no one else around. The person that did this was either a terrible shot or…"
"You were just a distraction." I say finishing his sentence. "You were meant to distraction the polices attention from the real target. But who was the target?"
"I was." I turn around quickly to see Lena walking down the stairs towards us.
"What are you doing here?" I ask walking towards her. "Is everything okay?"
"I received this at my office this morning," she hands the letter to Alex while taking my hand in hers and gently squeezing it.
Alex begins to reads aloud. "Dear Ms. Luthor, this letter will not find you well, we know everything about you and we plan to us that to our advantage until you give is what we want." Alex looks up at Lena whose face is set and unchanging. "You have something called Harun-El, which gives people superhuman power. We want it."
"There isn't any left," Lena quickly states. "I destroyed it after I discovered the consequences." She's referring to how the longer the Harun-El is the individual's body they slowly begin to die.
Alex continues. "If we are not given what we request by eight o'clock tonight we'll make another example of another one of your friends. And next time, we won't miss." Alex looks at James and then back at Lena. "There's an address at the bottom, Brainy can you run this?" She asks handing him the paper.
"Of course Director."
"Lena," Alex looks back at her, head slightly down.
"I know," she comments. "We don't give into terrorists."
"We'll do everything we can in order to find out who is threatening you and bring them to justice," I saw squeezing her hand trying to prove my point and give her some of my positive energy. "Until then, Lena, I'd really like it if you stayed here at the D.E.O."
"You know I can't do that Kara," Alex leaves us alone. "I have a company to run and Luthor's aren't known for running scared." I shake my head and attempt to walk away but she grabs my arms and turns me back around. "Listen, I have personal security and regular security at L Corp and I have the "need Supergirl" watch," she says with air quotes. "I will not hesitate to call you if I need you," she leans in and kisses me as I pout. "I have to get back," she comments.
Turning on her heel she makes her way back out of the D.E.O the way she came. I turn around quickly looking Brainy dead in the eye. "Find out who wrote that letter," I pause turning to Alex. "I have to get to Catco, with James down someone needs to be there to hold down the fort." With that being said I take off towards Catco. I could defiantly use some time away from the thought of someone trying to kill my girlfriend.
Arriving at Catco Mia is standing in front of my desk with a cup of coffee, I would ask how she knew I was coming in but I'm sure Brainy has something to do with it. I smile at her as I accept the cup of coffee and sit behind my desk. "What's the headlines?" I ask as I bring my computer to life. The last time James got shot he made it a point to promote me to his second in command in case anything like that ever happened again; Catco would be in the hands of someone Cat Grant trusted. Even though Lena now owns the company, her attention is always on L Corp so James and I run Catco, keeping her in the loop of all the daily happenings. Even though Lena bought the company for me, she's made it clear that if Catco is causing her to lose money she won't hesitate to sell.
Mia is listing all the headlines; I zone her out slightly, thinking about Lena and everything that is happening right now. I'm sure no one would blame me. "Wait," I put my hand up and stop her from talking when something she says catches my ear. "What was that last one again?"
"Lillian Luthor's escape and the possible assistant from Lex Luthor," she comments as she looks down at her paper.
"Lex is dead," I comment simply. "Lena killed him."
She shrugs slightly. "Some believe that Lex isn't dead, there has been powering be turned on at three old Luthor corp locations, ones Lex used to use when he was trying to bring down superman." She looks at me, "I've been looking into it since Lillian Luthor escaped prison."
"Lex tried to kill his mother too, why would he try to break her out now?" I ask looking at the information that Mia handed me. I look closer at the map that she has printed out. "How outdated is this?" I ask.
"One day," she comments looking at me wondering what I am seeing. "What is I Kara?"
"One of the locations that powered up, I know it." I say handing her back the papers and getting up from my desk. "I need to get to the D.E.O. and talk to Alex." I walk around my desk with Mia following me. "Go home, pack a bag…we're taking a trip," I comment flipping my phone out of my pocket and dialing the only number that matters.
"Hey! Kara, I was just thinking about you," Lena's voice back be heard from the other end of the phone. "I was thinking that maybe we could…"
I cut her off before she has a time to finish. "Lena, I need to talk to you, it's important." She stops and tells me to continue. "I need you to stay with Alex and Maggie tonight," I say quickly. "I have to go out of town, we have a lead on your mother and where she might be since she's broken out of prison," I make it clear. "I shouldn't be there for more than a day."
"I'm not staying with Alex and Maggie. I'm a big girl Kara, I can take care of myself." She makes it clear.
"Lena this isn't a discussion," I say sternly. "I won't be here to protect you Lena; I need to know that you're safe. We don't know who these people are and we don't know when they'll strike next."
I can almost hear her hold her breath. "Kara," she says my name in a way that sends a shiver right down my back. "You are not in control of me. You're not supposed to tell me what I can and cannot do. Remember, we're a team, this is not a dictatorship." She pauses. "I am not staying with Alex and Maggie and I don't want to find out that a D.E.O agent is parked outside our apartment either. I can take care of myself, I was doing it long before you and I were dating, hell I've been doing it long before Supergirl was even Supergirl."
"Lena, please…"
"No Kara, if you do not respect me and my wishes in regards to this, let's just say when you get home," she pauses. "We'll be talking." With that she hangs up on me, I pull the phone away from my ear, looking at it shocked.
"Where are we going?" Mia asks.
I forgot she was even standing next to me. I shake my head and remember what was happening before I called Lena. "Smallville," I comment looking at her. "Where Superman and Lex first met. I noticed on the map you handed me that it is one of the sites where the power has been turned back on." I press the down button on the elevator. "Something tells me if Lex is still alive, he'll be back where it all started."
