The Blessings in the Broken Pieces

Leonard was sitting on the front porch swing of his house drinking a glass of iced tea when he saw a car coming down the long gravel driveway. As the car stopped in front of the house, two twin teenage girls jumped out and yelled, "Hey Papaw, we're going to the barn to see the horses. Before Leonard could say, "Okay. Be careful." they were already out of sight.

The driver of the car got out and slowly stretched their limbs. Before they could finish stretching, Leonard appeared right beside them and said, "Hey kiddo. It's always good to see you. I hope you're going to stay a little while."

Leonard's oldest child said, "Just a day or two Dad. I needed to get away from the city and my practice for a little while."

Leonard knew something was wrong, and he also knew it probably had something to do with his daughter's husband. "Do your brothers and I need to have a little talk with Frank? If he has mistreated you or the girls in any way, we would be glad to "explain" to him that no one messes with our family."

Marie had to laugh at her dad's offer, though she knew he was serious. She loved how protective he and her brothers were, and even though her dad was nearly 70 years old, he was still an alpha male in all things concerning his family.

Leonard laughed a little as Marie said, "Dad, isn't it enough that you put the fear of Leonard Hofstadter in Frank? He learned how to be a man and how to take care of his family from you. Frank never had a dad growing up that taught him what a real man is like and how he is supposed to act. You know Frank adores you, but also is a little scared of you."

"Okay, sweetheart, if you ever need me or your brothers, you just say the word and we will be there in a flash."

"I know Dad, and I love you all for that."

"Is Mom here?"

"She's inside on the phone. I think she's discussing some of her recent research."

"Are you ever jealous of all the attention Mom gets?"

"Are you kidding me? No, I love your mom and I'm always proud of her achievements, just like she is of mine. Her intelligence is one of the most attractive things about her."

As they stepped onto the porch, the front door opened and a dark-haired beauty stepped out, opened her arms wide and said, "Oh honey, it's so good to see you. Did my granddaughters come too?"
