Chapter 18
This is going to be a fine mess
Talk about cliché. I had become one of those girls on Teen Mom, or 16 and Pregnant, except I wasn't sixteen. Okay, it didn't matter right now. I was god damn pregnant and I didn't think this pregnancy stick was going to change from the pink plus to a blue minus. All I could say was, 'great, now my life is a cliché all together,' but I, of course, knew I had bigger problems to solve at the moment. One, Sesshomaru, and two, Sesshomaru…wait I just said that…I meant stalker. But Sesshomaru…he was…um…moving on.
A few days back, I had discussed what I was going to do with Sesshomaru. Long story short, I decided on the easiest thing and asked Ayame to print four hundred copies of the picture Izayoi gave me and distribute it out at school. But now…I needed to change it. If this guy was going to be a father, or whatever, I needed to do something a little less embarrassing and something that wouldn't follow my child through his or her high school years.
Wait…let us pause for a moment here.
I touched my hand to my stomach, trying to feel the life growing inside of me. I couldn't believe it, but I was pregnant.
I scurried to Ayame's full body mirror in the corner of her room, stripping down naked, and looked at myself. I turned sideways, trying to see if there was a small bump on my stomach. It was flat as a stretched highway in a prairie, but I knew it would appear soon, meaning I wouldn't be able to hide it under baggy clothes for long.
"Crap," I muttered under my breath.
I grabbed my cell from the nightstand, and called Ayame. As it rang, I just kept looking at my stomach in the mirror, almost waiting for it to start moving or swell or something. I was literally watching grass grow.
"Come on, come on." How many times were phones supposed to ring? "Ayame, answer the phone."
"Hello?" she answered, mixed noises in the background.
"Finally you answer! Where are you?"
"I'm at the printer shop getting those four hundred picture copies you wanted because there's a piano stuck to your ass and you're apparently too sick to do it yourself. But I know you are just being lazy."
"Shit, Ayame, I was going to tell you not to make copies anymore. The plan is off. We need to think about something else to do." I paused, adding. "And I am not lazy!"
"What? So you are telling me that after I paid about a month's worth of books to prints some stupid pictures of Sesshomaru, you want to call it off? Nah ah girl, you are not bailing on me now. What happened to your revenge?"
I pulled away from the mirror, not able to look at myself anymore, and started to pace the room. "What happened was…okay look I can't tell you on the phone, but I just can't do it anymore."
"Rin, you had a plan. You were one hundred and ten percent committed. You knew what you were going to do and say and everything and now after all of that, even after everything Sesshomaru has done to you, you want to quit? That isn't you! That isn't my best friend!"
Geez, she was right. Was this unplanned pregnancy already messing with my head? Apparently so, but at least my hormones weren't heightened yet. Gosh, it gave me the chills just thinking about it…or maybe I was just cold. Yup, definitely just cold.
I pressed my lips together in frustration. Guess the hormones were heightened. "Can you just….okay finish whatever you are doing and get home."
She paused for a second, and then started to speak in her worried, anxious tone. "What? What's wrong? Is the house burning down? Is the stalker outside? Rin, why aren't you speaking?"
See what I mean?
"I'm fine, but I don't want to say anything on here because…"
"Because….WHAT?"
I looked around the room, and whispered, "The phone might be bugged."
Another pause, then a quick laugh. "Rin, you are being ridiculous and paranoid…I'll be home in ten minutes."
She hung up then, and I was left staring at it with a what-the-fuck face, yelling, "You're the paranoid one, Ayame!"
But perhaps we were both paranoid in our own way. With me and the stalker, now the baby, and Ayame being…Ayame…paranoia was a regular routine for us.
After getting changed with whatever was on the floor, I heard Ayame come through the front door. Her quick footsteps pattered upstairs, opening the bedroom door, her face in an expression of worry.
"Okay…I'm here. Now what is it?"
I grabbed the pregnancy stick and placed it in her hand. She immediately held it out at arm's length, making her face when she smelled or saw something really gross. It was the scrunched up nose look.
"Rin…why did you give me this?"
"Look at it?"
"Did you pee on this?"
She wasn't even listening to me. "Ayame! Look at it!"
And she did. Right after, her face changed again. Eyes widened. Mouth gapped. She looked like she was about to cry. "Rin…."
I nodded. "Yeah, I know."
"I knew you smelled different."
"Wait, what?"
She placed the stick in the trash beside her. "Your scent has changed. It had for about a week now. Actually now that you mention it, it changed the day you started getting sick."
"You…my scent has changed?"
"Is there an echo in here?"
I blinked, feeling my stomach drop. "Ayame, if you smelled the change, then Sesshomaru…." Did he know about the pregnancy?
"I doubt he would know anything by the way," Ayame said. "He is almost a clueless as a dog chasing his tail. Yes, he probably smelled the change, but he was probably too dumb to know what it meant."
"Then what about you? You said you smelled the change, why didn't you say something?"
"I thought you were wearing some kind of perfume!" She raised her hands in defence. "I didn't know anything."
"So you are also as clueless as a dog chasing his tail?"
"Wolf! Not dog! I am nothing like those mutts."
I rolled my eyes. "Whatever, Ayame. Did you get the pictures?"
"Yes, Miss Sassy, I did." She grabbed a brown envelope from out of her bag and gave them to me. "And you owe me big time! I had to stand behind an old man who kept farting every thirty seconds. On top of that—"
I waved her off. "Yeah, yeah, I'll get your books soon."
I pulled the pictures out of the envelope, looking at the multiple copies. Sesshomaru…he was really cute as a child, even if he dressed like a girl in a pink dress. I wondered if the child growing inside would be as cute.
"Why were you going to back out?" I heard her ask.
"What?" I did hear her the first time, I just said 'what' because of the moment and…okay never mind.
"Why were you going to back out? This was your idea in the first place…is it because of the pregnancy?"
I nodded, sitting on the bed. "I just didn't want this to follow my child into high school. They would be the laughing stock of the whole…country…maybe the world depending where Sesshomaru is and what he does."
"The closes thing that dog will be doing is probably becoming a mail boy at his daddy's company. Besides, you shouldn't let something like this bug you. It isn't like he'll be there for the baby. Sure he might have some time with it, but the child will be half demon, and knowing Sesshomaru…I don't know what he'll think about it."
I gave her a cold stare. "What do you mean? Are you saying Sesshomaru won't give a crap about his own blood?"
"We are talking about the same person, right? This is Sesshomaru Takahashi, the dog demon who despises humans with an obsessed passion. He's a bastard who takes and then leaves…Rin this guy isn't someone who shouldn't be a father."
I sighed sadly. "I don't want my child to grow up not knowing who their father is. My parents died when I was young. I can barely remember them. I just don't want my child to end up the same way. I want a happy family. I want them to have someone who cares for them. I want them to have a future."
She sat down beside me, rubbing my back. "And they will. Besides, I'll be there and will be the best auntie around. You won't be alone in this, Rin."
"But I can't hide this child forever. Sesshomaru will find out…and…what if he tries to take the baby away?"
"Rin, can I ask you something? Do you still love Sesshomaru?"
I looked at her with soft eyes, thinking deeply about my feelings for Sesshomaru. He had hurt me…multiple times. He humiliated me. He was a high level jerk. He was a very dangerous creature. And I was still in love with him. Fuck. I breathed deeply, closing my eyes, feeling the tears swell and fall.
"Oh Rin…." Ayame pulled me into a hug as I began to sob. Damn hormones.
"I'm such an idiot."
"No, you aren't an idiot. We'll get back at him."
"I think I what to do."
"What did you have in mind?"
I pulled away and smiled.
From then, I knew this was going to be one hell of a pregnancy.
xXx
"Are you sure of this, Rin?"
I nodded. "Yes."
"This can either end good or bad."
We were standing in the crowded hallways of the school. It was morning, a five minutes before the bell, and everyone was either chatting or making out. It was high school, come on!
"That ass needs to know what it's like," she commented. "As much as he doesn't deserve you again, he needs to be there for the whole shindig. I think you're doing a good thing."
"I just hope it doesn't end in a disaster."
"It won't…maybe. Do you have the envelope with the pictures?"
I nodded. "And I'm guessing you have them."
She held up the weapons of mass destruction. "Now we wait until the hallways clear and then we decorate this place in pink."
I nodded, looking around, trying to spot Sesshomaru. And guess what, I did. There he was standing at the lockers with Kagura right there talking and touching. A shot of jealousy went through body, and I looked away, facing Ayame.
"They're right there."
"Who?"
"Kagura and Sesshomaru."
I saw her look over my shoulder, and her eyes going wide. "Oh boy."
"What?" I looked over my shoulder too and saw the picture.
And here come the tears again.
"Well, that's a lovely thing to see in the morning. I really don't like it when people make out in the halls," Ayame commented. "Rin, don't look at them. Kagura probably pulled him onto her."
"Whatever," I wiped the tears away. "I don't care." Lies! All lies!
"Rin…."
"Hey Ayame!" Koga came up behind her and wrapped his big arm around her shoulder.
She smiled, giving Koga a quick kiss. "Hey, babe!" She looked back over to me. "We'll start after the bell rings. See you in a few!"
And there she went, walking off with Koga. Now I just felt awkward standing alone in the middle of the crowded hallways. God, it was like freshmen year all over again.
I didn't bother looking behind me as I walked to the bathroom, looking myself in the mirror and at my plain looking clothes too. "At least you should have a sense of style, Rin."
"Rin?"
I looked beside me to see Kagome standing there. I blinked and looked back to my own reflection, feeling a bit awkward seeing her considering she was dating…. "Hey," I smiled.
"Hey, I was going to look for you. How are you feeling?"
"Better," I nodded.
"Yeah, did the doctor find out what you got?"
No, I didn't go to the doctor. "Yeah, just the flu."
"Right…Um Rin…are we cool?"
"Of course," I said, smiling.
"Good, I was afraid it was going to be awkward since I'm dating Inuyasha."
I sighed. "Kagome, you are one of my best friends. I could never be mad at you or whatever." I heard the bell, telling me it was time. I gave her one more smile. "Better get going."
I heard a small 'bye' as I left, feeling the thick atmosphere dissipate when I entered the hallways. I loved Kagome, but her dating Inuyasha…and me and Sesshomaru being in the outs…it was strange talking to her. I didn't know why, but it was.
I met Ayame near her locker, and by the time we were ready, the hallways were cleared. Nobody was left.
"You ready?" She asked.
I nodded, nervously wondering what would happen after.
"Are you going to back out again?"
I shook my head. "No, let's do this."
She gave me half the stack and we started our pursuit, going opposite directions in the halls. I threw most of the stack down the halls, pining and taping over three dozen on walls, lockers, and doors. When we met up again, we looked at our work.
"This is going to be a fine mess," I commented.
xXx
When lunch rolled around, the mess started. Students filled the halls, picking up the pictures. There was laughing, gossiping, and even the odd crying. The plan had passed successfully, and now we had to wait until Sesshomaru appeared.
"There he is," Ayame said, pointing quickly to him taking a picture from one little freshman nerd and disintegrating it with his poison claws. "And he is not a happy puppy at all."
"He is so mad," I laughed shortly.
"Let's go to the cafeteria and watch more unfold there."
I followed her to the cafeteria where more people just kept giggling over the picture. This was priceless, but I did have that feeling people got after they did something horrible. No, not after eating Mexican food, I meant guilt. I really didn't know how big, people's reactions would've been and frankly, this was bigger than I thought.
I told Ayame I was going to get some water, and I watched her sit down beside Koga at the table. Seconds later, Sesshomaru entered the room. A huge blast of anger erupted, and everyone fell silent. His eyes were almost red, and I could even hear him growling from the cashier.
He stomped over to the table were Koga, Ayame, and a few of his other friends were sitting, and held the picture up, asking, "What the hell is this, wolf?"
Koga was the one who answered. "Whoa, dude, is that you?"
He sat down opposite of them. "It doesn't matter who it is, what matters is that your little girlfriend placed them all over the school."
"Don't you be accusing my girl about this, man."
The picture disintegrated in a green mist again. "I know it was her. Her and that blasted friend of hers. Do you both have a death wish?"
It was time to put a stop to this. I walked over and sat down right beside him. "Mind if I sit here?" I looked at Sesshomaru and saw his eyes were actually red. Wow, okay. "Nice childhood picture by the way. I told you pink was your colour."
"I knew it was both of you. So what is it? Trying to humiliate me? Well, it isn't going to work."
"Really, because I see from everyone around…humiliation has passed."
"What do you want, Rin?" he hissed low.
"I want retribution. I want you to know how it feels. And this picture is only half of it."
"What are you talking about?"
That was when I grabbed his left wrist and secured the silver bracelet around his wrist, the other already around mine. His eyes widened momentarily before narrowing them dangerously. And I only smirked, a smirk I would consider devilish in a way.
"Have you heard of history repeating, Takahashi? Because this is it."
Oh yeah, this was going to be a fine mess indeed.
A/N: Yeah, sorry for another short chapter. I tried to make it longer, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. Reviews are loved as always.
