"ooh! what a cute bento, senju-san!"

tobirama thought his coworker was mistaken, but, lo and behold, it was indeed about his bento. once he got the lid away, his sight was greeted by sucha tantalizing display of bento he only saw on tv. there were octopus-shaped sausages, the rice was shaped into a smiling bear head, fresh veggies and egg rolls.

cold sweat ran down his back.

tobirama never got a bento like this before. izuna and he were busy with their work, so whoever was on bento duty usually just cooked rice, egg, or frozen katsu. carving animal faces? nah. never.

as everyone else on their shared lunch table took pics of their bento, he thought of important dates he might have missed, but this was may, their birthdays were past, their siblings' brthdays still few months ahead, their anniversary was yet to come-ah, izuna was never big about anniversary anyway.

nevertheless, he couldn't shake off that something was clearly wrong with this bento.

he shook his head. no way. he's being paranoid. it's his wife's bento-

his first bite into the egg roll nearly sent him to tears. like he just swallowed a torch's flame. this is way spicier than he could handle.

"senju-san seems enjoying his bento so much..."

tobirama forced a smile, wiped his tears, and took a large ball of rice to quell his flaming tongue.

wrong move-the rice was even spicier. the sausage-spicy. the veggies-not spicy but salty like it's been drenched in saltwater for years!

everything in the box looked so innocent!

he steeled his resolve. he would eat everything. wasting food is a no-no in his dictionary.

thankfully, as he got used to the taste he managed to finish the entire bento. he did his routine as usual afterwards, working, going home, patting the cats who hung out in their neighborhood...

"how's lunch?" izuna asked once he's home, grading her students' papers in their living room, beaming so brightly.

"...good," he hummed before dropping to his knees and slammed his forehead onto the floor. "forgive me, please."

"mm? for what?"

"i forgot to take you to the cat cafe that was about to close last saturday," he said, realizing this mistake when he greeted those cats. he was using their car, and it rained hard so she couldn't go alone. "i know you'd been looking forward to your last visit..."

"hmm, i don't know, it seems you can handle my bento well, so... round two?"

he glanced up. "please don't."

"only if you promise to take me to their new cafe." izuna gave him a glass of milk.

it's warm in his grasp. "okay." after a sip, he asked, "but how did you make everything so spicy?"

izuna grinned. "family recipe, of course!"
