A/N: Hello all. Welcome to the new story. This is my first Harry Potter story. I have a long one planned here. This will eventually become a Dramione story so fair warning. At this point I am going to give this a T rating but as the story progresses that may change. This story starts in year 2 but I have plans through and after year 7 but any romance will not begin until probably year 5 or 6 since I feel that trying to push romance on 12 year old characters is a bit weird. It has been a VERY long time since I have last read the books so this will be more based on the movies than the books, and also since the initial event I am putting this story on is a movie moment that is not in the books. Anyway I hope you enjoy! (Also the title may change at some point.)

P.S. I do not use a beta reader so if you notice any spelling/grammar mistakes just let me know.

I know this chapter is a bit short.

Draco Malfoy sat on the staircase inside Flourish & Blotts staring at the back of his hand where a small scratch showed against his pale skin. Another mark from his father.

They had just been at Borgin & Burkes so that Lucius could get rid of some illicit artifacts before the ministry could come poking around. Lucius had warned Draco not to touch anything, but, as usual, Draco got distracted and was rewarded with a rap from his father's wand-cane resulting in the scratch on his hand.

Draco had noted that Lucius had been acting a bit odd while bargaining with Borgin. There was a diary in the box of items that Lucius had brought that he was now reluctant to sell. Draco had never had the opportunity to observe it for any significant amount of time, but while assisting Lucius with the gathering of items to bring, Draco had touched the diary and felt a malicious aura come off the book. As Lucius snatched the diary from him, Draco caught sight of part of the name embossed on the leather cover: Riddle. Where have I heard that name before? He pushed it out of his mind as his father snapped at him to follow.

Lucius had other things to attend to and had dropped Draco at the book shop to get his new schoolbooks. As soon as Draco entered the shop, he noticed the large crowd that had gathered in the back half of the shop and went to sit on the stairs in the abandoned half of the shop to wait for the crowd to die down.

To occupy his time, Draco pulled a random book off the shelf beside him and began leafing through it. He stumbled upon a page describing the basilisk. Basilisks? Draco had overheard a conversation the night before between Lucius and his mother, Narcissa, where the creature had been mentioned. They had been discussing some sort of chamber or something at Hogwarts and something to do with the dark lord. He couldn't stay to hear more of the conversation as he had heard footsteps approaching, and he didn't want to be caught skulking outside his father's study.

"Harry Potter?!"

Draco's ears perked upon hearing the name. Of course he would be here. There was even more commotion happening in the shop now. He heard the click of a flash bulb and knew that a picture of the famous Harry Potter would be plastered on the front page of tomorrow's Daily Prophet.

Draco watched as a small group emerged from the crowd. He recognized them immediately. Wanting to read about the basilisk, he tore the page from the book and placed the book on a nearby stack. Draco descended the stairs and placed himself in the path of the Golden Trio. Snidely, he remarked, "Famous Harry Potter, can't even go to a bookshop without making the front page."

"Leave him alone."

Draco looked at the small red-haired girl who had spoken and smirked, "Look Potter. You got yourself a girlfriend." Before Potter could reply, Draco felt the unmistakable form of his father's cane hitting his shoulder. It made his blood run cold. Draco heard his father's cold voice, "Now, now Draco, play nicely."

Draco ignored the rest of the conversation between Lucius and Mr. Weasley who had appeared from the crowd. As he watched Lucius replace the Weasley girl's book in her cauldron, Draco noticed that a second book had been placed alongside her original book. He noticed the worn edges of the odd diary that Lucius had decided not to sell to Borgin earlier. He looked at Lucius curiously, but decided to say nothing as questioning his father would have been a mistake. He instead held his tongue and moved his way to the back of the shop to purchase his books now that the crowd had begun to dissipate.

After purchasing his books, Draco returned to the front of the shop to see his father waiting by the door. He looked up at Draco's approach, "Did you get everything you need?" "Yes, sir." He and Lucius made their way out of the shop and back to the manor in silence.
