A/N: Shoutout to the Surrera Sanctuary squad! You girls are awesome!
After Robert's announcement, things got weird really fast. Some people had come to congratulate them, and Andy had smiled politely. It was not a forced smile. She had told Jack the truth when she had said she did not regret marrying Robert. However, she was not ready for the secret to get out like that, exposing her to everyone. Now, Andy was sitting at the table, next to Vic. Sullivan brought her the plate full of salad and fruits they had prepared just before, then sat next to her, at the end of the table. They ate silently, an awkward silent surrounding them, creating a peculiar atmosphere since the rest of the barn was still being filled with chatter and laughs. Andy was staring down at her plate, not daring to look at her friends, or her husband.
"So…" Dean started. "When did that happen?"
"A couple weeks ago." Sullivan answered, glancing at Andy.
"Yeah, I…" Herrera said as she pushed the chair back. Robert turned fully towards her when he heard the chair scratching the floor and caught her movement from the corner of his eye.
"You good?" he asked, covering her hands on her lap with his own, looking straight into her eyes.
"Yeah, just need some air." She said as she got to her feet. "You stay here, I'll be right back." She added squeezing his shoulder and the hand he was still holding when she saw he was about to get up and follow her.
Robert was taken off guard, so he did not answer, and even if he had answered, it would not have mattered because she was already gone. He could only stare at her retreating back as she exited the barn. He really wanted to follow her, but knew it was not the time nor the place to have her mad at him, so if she wanted some time alone, he would let her have that. He turned back to the people at the table. They were still being weird, and it did not help him feel better, so he bent his head down, pushing around the salad in his plate.
"Remember that time when I told you to give her time and you didn't, chief?" Vic said casually, making him whip his head around to look at her.
"I…"
"That night baby Pru was born and Pruitt told her about his cancer. She ran into her bunk and you followed her, though I suggested that it would be wiser to give her some time." Vic explained.
"Oh yeah, right." Sullivan answered, not quite sure of where she was getting at.
"I should've guessed then. Should've connected the dots."
"Except we weren't together then." He pointed out.
"Well, thinking back about that night, I think it was pretty obvious that something was going on there." She stated.
"I love her, I have for a very long time, but we weren't together then." He repeated, using his no-nonsense captain's voice.
"Ok then…" she said, not trusting him one minute.
"So…How's married life?" Dean asked, trying to diffuse the tension.
Andy walked quickly as she made her way out of the barn. She tried to mute the sound of laughter and conversation as she went, and almost slammed the door separating the barn from the hall when she finally exited the room. Walking to the center of the hall, she took a deep breath, hands on her hips, looking first at the exit door, then at the corridor, and finally at the stair leading to the beanery. It took her all of a second to decide which way she wanted to go.
She slowly made her way to the captain's office. She softly rapped at the door, peering between the blinds. When she saw her friend look up, she opened the door and made her way into the office, making sure to close behind her.
"Hey." She said softly. "Are you ok?"
"Nope." Maya said with an exasperated sigh, eyes still sending daggers at the door.
"Ok…Want to talk about it?" Andy asked her, as she moved to sit on the chair across from Maya.
"Nope."
"Alright."
They sat together, each one of them lost in thoughts. They did not need to talk to know that the other was not fine. They could see it, feel it in the tension that filled the air around them. After a few minutes, Maya finally broke the silence.
"Why are you here, Andy?" She said, sighing a little. Not that she did not love her friend, but she really wanted to be alone.
"I…" Andy took a deep breath, looked her friend straight in the eyes and said, "I got married…To Sullivan…" By the end of her sentence, Andy wanted to disappear into a hole, she was scared of her best friend's reaction, but just like she had done about half an hour before, she kept staring at Maya, not backing down.
"What did you just say?" Maya asked surprised.
"I married Sullivan." Andy repeated slowly, with an unwavering look though she was terrified inside.
"What? When? I…" Bishop inhaled deeply. "I knew you were together, but that…" She was at a loss for words.
"I know it sounds crazy…" Herrera started.
"Are you happy?"
"What?" Andy frowned questioningly at her.
"Are you happy?" Maya repeated the question, punctuating each word.
"I…Yes." Andy said, looking down at her clasped hands in her lap, finally letting her fear take over.
"Ok then. That's what matters, Andy."
"Thanks." Andy waited a bit before continuing. "You want to talk about what has you sitting here, alone and crying?"
"Not really. I just need…" She paused, looking for the right word. "Time…I just need time to think."
"About?"
"Don't wanna talk about it." Maya said curtly.
Feeling that her friend was on the edge and ready to bite her head off, Andy decided to back down and drop the subject. She knew that she would open up when she was ready to. They were a lot alike on this matter. There was no point in forcing them to express their feelings and fears if they were not ready to. Consequently, she remained silent a few more minutes, enjoying the peace and quiet, though the atmosphere was still a little tensed. Then, she pushed herself out of the chair, extending a hand to Maya.
"Come on," she said simply.
"What?" Maya looked at the offered hand questioningly.
"Just humor me, please." Andy replied, looking at her with pleading eyes.
It took Maya one second before she grabbed her friend's hand. Together, they exited the office, making their way up the stairs. They never stopped walking until they reached their destination, still holding onto each other's hands. Since everyone was attending the Spaghetti Dinner in the barn, no one saw them as they made their way through the station. A few minutes later, they pushed the door open to the roof, letting it slam behind them. They let go of each other and walked around, breathing in the fresh air.
"Why did you bring us here?" Maya asked as they met on the edge of the rooftop, both had their eyes focused on the skyline.
"I needed air." Andy said quietly.
"I get it." Bishop said, figuring her friend was talking about her dad and the funeral. "Do you know if we gathered enough money for your dad's funeral?"
"Oh, yeah you missed that part. Robert told me, and everyone else, that Dixon approved my dad's Line of Duty funeral." She said with a half-smile.
"Really?" Maya said turning to look at her friend. "Andy, that's amazing!"
"Yes, he deserves it."
"So…Robert, uh?" Maya said after a minute of silence.
"That is his name." Andy pointed out.
"Yeah, but you do call him that."
"What do you want me to call him?" Andy said in an amused voice.
"I don't know, chief, hubby, honey bear…" Maya trailed off.
By the time she was done talking, both women were laughing, sitting down on the ground to find some balance. It took them five minutes to go back to normal. While laughing, they had leant against each other so that, now that they were all sobered up, Andy's head was resting on Maya's shoulder and they were holding hands. A way for them to support each other, like any best friends would do.
"So, you never actually said why you needed to come up here." Bishop broke the silence.
"I…I married my Battalion Chief." Andy answered, looking in the distance.
"You already told me…" Maya said quietly, frowning in confusion.
"Yes, well, he decided to tell everyone tonight."
"Oh…Hence the need for air." Maya concluded.
Just then, they heard the door open. They looked towards the noise and watched as Vic walked to them. She sat next to Andy, grabbing her other hand and putting her head on her shoulder.
"People are looking for you," She said, squeezing Andy's hand. Since she did not know if Maya knew about the wedding, it was a silent way to tell her that among those people was her overprotective husband.
"We needed to breathe." Maya answered.
"Good spot." Vic said. "We haven't been up here in so long."
"Yeah, I kinda miss us spending time together…You know, just us girls." Andy confessed.
"So true. We will have to do that soon." Vic said.
"Yeah, it could be like your bachelorette party." Maya added.
"Oh, so she told you." Vic said, moving her head to look at Bishop.
"I already figured they were together, I just learnt that they were actually married though." Maya explained.
"You knew?" Hughes exclaimed, staring at her.
"Yeah, there were a few signs, and well…You kind of figure it out when your chief breaks protocol to run into a burning building, right after he asks you if 'Herrera is out'." She explained.
"Right…" Vic said, laying her head back down on Andy's shoulder. "I'm mad at you though." She told Herrera, squeezing her hand. "You never told us you were even dating the guy."
"It…It was complicated."
"I know that." Vic answered in a sad tone. "I've been through this."
"Oh, Vic I'm sorry. I didn't mean…" Andy said, moving her head to rest it against Hughes's.
"It's ok." Vic interrupted her. "It's just…I know what it's like to fall in love with your chief. I know what it's like to go against the rules or try to obey the rules, while wanting to keep your jobs." She took a breath. "Is that what it was all about a few months ago? You know, when you were always either at each other's throat or avoiding eye contact?" she asked.
"Yeah, he was actually trying not to break the rules. Said it was because of our promotions, which obviously I didn't get thanks to my dad."
"What do you mean?" Maya asked, taken aback by what Andy had just revealed.
"We'll talk about that later." Andy dismissed the question, using a firm tone to make sure her friend understood that it was not something she was ready to talk about in that moment.
"Do you regret it?" Vic asked, immediately trying to change the subject.
"No, I don't." She answered right away. "Why do you keep asking that? Jack already told me to get an annulment, but I don't want that. I love him. I do. It was fast, it was bad timing because of my dad…Yeah, I know what it looks like. But I married him because I love him." By the time she was done, she had tears in her eyes and was breathing heavily.
"Ok, we get it. We didn't mean anything by that." Vic reassured her, rubbing her back. "I wish I did the same thing with Ripley. At least now, you just have to tell HR, and wish for the best."
"Dixon knows. We're keeping our jobs." Andy said.
"Oh, well then you did what you wanted and that's good. I really wish Luke and I had been that smart." Vic said in a teary voice.
"Oh Vic…" Maya said in a broken voice, moving to pull Andy and Vic into a big hug, while still sitting on the ground.
They were still hugging when the door opened. The person walked to them, smiling at the sight.
"Hey ladies, we've been looking everywhere for you! And by 'we' I mean, Dean, Jack, Myself, and Mr. Andy Herrera." Travis said with a smirk.
"Shut up Travis." All three girls said in one voice, laughing a little.
"I guess we should be moving," Maya said, ending the hug as she got to her feet.
"But you never…" Andy started as both she and Vic got up.
"Later." Bishop cut her off, throwing her a knowing look.
Andy nodded once to show that she understood. This was a talk for later. They started to make their way to the door when Andy spoke up.
"I'm sorry guys." She said in a soft voice.
They all turned to look questioningly at her.
"I didn't mean to keep all of this a secret. But we danced around each other for so long…We tried to not act on our feelings for so long…I mean, we've been in love with each for a long time now. I was ready, he wasn't, he was, I wasn't… And then I was finally ready, and we were finally on the same page and it was good…" She said with a dreamy smile illuminating her face. "And then, next thing I knew, we were getting married and well…My dad…" She explained, feeling a sudden need to prove to her friends that she was not regretting that.
"OK." Travis said. "So…You're in love with the chief, we got that earlier…Thanks for scarring my eyes by the way. I wasn't ready for that." He added shuddering to emphasize his point, though his real intention was to lighten the mood and reassure Andy.
"Aren't you the drama queen." Vic teased him, gently punching his shoulder.
"Come on girl, we're not mad at you…Not really. We still love you." Maya said, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.
"Yeah, we want a nice party, not what your husband just tried to sell us…" Vic continued.
"Right, that Spaghetti Dinner is not, and I mean not, a wedding reception!" Travis added, supporting Vic's point.
Andy felt a little better as they made their way down inside the station. She had been really terrified by her friends' reaction. She knew she had somehow disappointed them, but they were still her friends and she never wanted to hurt them. At least, now she knew that they would forgive her. They were talking casually, laughing lightly at something Travis had said when they arrived in the beanery.
"Here you are!" Dean exclaimed.
He had been talking with Jack and Sullivan when the little group entered the room. While he was standing at one end of the kitchen island, window in his back, Jack and Sullivan were facing him, one on each side of the island. So when Miller noticed their arrival, both men turned around to face the people who had just arrived.
"Andy!" Sullivan breathed out, walking towards her. Vic, Maya and Travis moved away from Andy and closer to the kitchen island. Though none of them wanted to witness that scene between their friend and their chief, they still stood next to the island, watching carefully as Sullivan stopped right in front of Andy. He reached up to touch her face but stopped himself just before their skin connected, going for her hand instead.
"You alright?" he asked, rubbing a finger along her knuckles.
"Yeah, I'm good," she said, looking up at him. Her heart broke a little and she felt a bit guilty, when she saw that his face was only expressing a mix of worry, sadness and love. "I just needed some fresh air." She smiled.
"OK…I'm sorry."
"What?" She asked in a hoarse voice.
"I...I didn't listen. Maybe I should've asked you before…" he trailed off, searching for the right words to use.
"Before putting me, us, in the limelight without telling me?" she supplied, a small smile tugging at the corner of her mouth.
"Yeah, I'm sorry about that…I just was so happy about Dixon, and you were looking at me and I just felt at home and I really wanted to be able to kiss you in public." He said
"Yeah, that we did not need to see though" Someone interrupted, making Sullivan turn his head around as Andy moved a little to look past him.
"Travis!" Vic said, slapping his arm.
"What? Not my fault they're talking here!" He said, motioning to where they were standing, in the middle of the beanery.
"Doesn't mean you can listen in on what we're saying…" Andy smiled.
Travis shrugged in answer, moving his hands to indicate that it was not his fault if they were talking there, in front of them. They were talking softly and quietly, but it was still loud enough for them to overhear.
"Well, I mean it anyway." Robert said, looking back at her. "I really am sorry."
"It's ok," Andy smiled, her eyes locking on his, conveying all the love she felt for him.
Whenever she looked into his eyes, Andy felt like the world around them was fading away, leaving them together in a bubble filled with love. She could get lost in his eyes, just bathing in the love he had for her. As she had once told Ryan, it was a feeling she had never felt before.
When he was looking at her, Robert could only focus on the love shining in her eyes, a love she only had for him. The love he felt for her was something he had never experienced before, not even with Claire, and he was very much in love with his late wife.
After what felt forever but really was a few seconds, Andy got on her tiptoes, wrapped her arms around his neck, and kissed him softly on the lips. It was a short sweet kiss, but he responded immediately, wrapping his arms around her waist. Somehow still aware of where they were, none of them deepened the kiss. In fact, the kiss was over almost as soon as it had started. However, Andy unwrapped her arms from around his neck as he turned to face the rest of the team, an arm still around Andy's waist, when they heard someone clear their throat, as someone else exclaimed.
"Is it how it's going to be now? Or are you just doing that cause it's just the seven of us here?" Dean said.
"Yeah, get a room." Travis exclaimed, smirking as Andy shyly hid in her husband's side, holding tightly onto him. Everyone laughed at that, and at the way the couple blushed.
Things were not great. Well, they were far from perfect. Andy knew she was still a mess, but Robert's impromptu decision to tell the world that they were married actually lifted a weight off her shoulder. At least, she did not have to worry about that secret anymore or about Dixon's reaction to his drug problem and their wedding. She looked up at her husband with a small smile. She got on her tiptoes, leaned closer to him, and whispered so that only he could hear, "You really are the safest place I have."
