It was a balmy Spring day in New York City. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping in Central Park and everyone was out and about. Unfortunately, everyone also included the not so nice.
"ALRIGHT EVERYBODY DOWN ON THE GROUND!"
The frightened citizens at the First National Bank of Manhattan immediately did as was told as two masked robbers stood by the front door and held them up at gun point. A third robber stood near a security guard with his gun pointed at him so he wouldn't make any sudden moves. Meanwhile the second robber stepped away from the door and began yelling at the people on the floor.
"EMPTY ALL OF YOUR POCKETS AND DON'T TRY ANYTHING FUNNY!"
They did as was told while first robber approached the counter and yelled for a teller to open the registers. The second robber came over and moved the rest to the floor. Once the registers were all opened did he begin filling the bags while the first robber moved that other teller away from the counter.
"COME ON JIMMY HURRY UP!" The third robber yelled getting annoyed at standing there near the security guard.
Suddenly out of nowhere sirens were being heard and flashing blue and red lights came into view. Someone had tripped the alarm!
"JIX IT, IT'S THE COPS!" The first robber yelled grabbing the bag and motioning for his posse. "Let's beat it!"
They raced out of a side door and into a van that immediately sped off as the NYPD pulled up. Unfortunately, before anyone could get a good look at the license plates the van was out of sight.
"Everyone okay!?" An officer yelled as he ran into the bank.
"Yes, no one was hurt." A teller said as he tried to catch his breath from being so scared. Though he was also curious, he knew that the robbers had watched their every move, so how on earth someone could have set off the alarm?
The answer to his question was right now speeding off in a high powered windup toy like car following the robbers in their tracks.
*************
In the Van
"HA we sprung that bank good! There must be at least a thousand smackers in here!"
"A thousand!? That's it!?"
"I said at least! You know I am no good at counting!"
Suddenly…
CATHUNK!
"What was that!?"
"What was what!?
"CATHUNK CATHUNK!"
"THAT!"
The van then jerked violently as the sound of air bursting pierced their ears. Then the van began to swerve.
"DANG IT WE GOT A FLAT!"
Another burst of air….
"Make that flats!"
By now the robbers were in a desolate area outside of the city, so the van was pulled over to a stop and the four of them (#4 being the driver of the getaway van) jumped out grabbing the bags and heading for the hills. But not before checking to see the cause of the tire flats. They were shocked to see a multitude of sharp nails pierced through the rear tires.
"What did we run over a nail truck!?"
"Never mind, let's beat it!"
And off they ran.
************
Meanwhile in the little toy car….
"Bonza Loca that was some good shootin Gadget love!" A stout mustached mouse said.
"Hehe…well I have been working on my aim Monterey." Another mouse, a blonde in a purple jumpsuit replied as she put down a high powered nail gun.
"It's paying off." A chipmunk in a red Hawaiian shirt complimented.
"Thanks Dale…what are you up to Chip?" The mouse named Gadget asked turning to the other chipmunk. This one was wearing a fedora and an aviator jacket.
"Monitoring their trail." He said looking down at the tracking device he was holding. "This GPS monitor you made will help lead us and the police to their hideout."
He then grabbed a large piece of paper and a short sharpened down pencil and began writing. When he was done he motioned for the little blue fly that was perched on Monterey's head.
"Zipper, take this to the police and drop it off at the Sergeants desk, we'll keep an eye on the robbers. The tracking device shows that they stopped about a mile from here!"
The little fly nodded and off he flew to the police station while the little gang of mice and chipmunks headed in the direction of the robber's hideout.
"AW FOR THE LOVE OF…THAT'S THE FOURTH BANK HEIST THIS MONTH IN OUR JURISDICTION!" A semi-bald stout man shouted. "The commissioner is going to have my behind!"
"Aw come on chief, we are trying here!" A thin, buck toothed officer whose hat covered his eyes said. "These guys just seem to always be one step ahead of us!"
"I know that Muldoon!" The chief yelled. "The question is how do we get ahead of them?" He plopped down wearily at his desk and sighed.
"What about you Kirby?" He asked a dark skinned mustached officer. "You got any take on this.
Kirby shook his head
"I've got nothing. They are definitely smart; they leave no trace of anything at the crime scene." He said.
Just then there was a knock at the door.
"Yeah yeah come in." The chief said.
The door opened and in walked a young female officer. She was dressed in her policeman's uniform right from her policeman's hat atop her brown hair and black leather boots. In her right hand she held a leash that was attached to the collar of a young German shepherd dog. The officers immediately grinned.
"Well if it isn't Maggie Drake!" Kirby yelled as he stood up to greet her. "My goodness, look at you…all grown up!"
The woman smiled as she took his hand.
"No way!" Muldoon exclaimed. "Little itty bitty Maggie!? Last time we saw you were still in high school."
Maggie grinned.
"Well college, the academy, and being a rookie at the 34th does keep a person busy. It's been quite a while you guys! Uncle Drake was still on the force last time I saw you all!"
"What are you doing here anyway!" Muldoon asked. "And with your faithful partner no less."
He reached down to pet the dog's head.
"I called her." The chief said. "I asked that Maggie be transferred to our unit. She's our newest K9 cop."
Maggie smiled happily.
"And I gladly accepted." She said as she looked down at her dog. "Though Socrates and I could never take the place of Uncle Drake and Plato."
Kirby and Muldoon smiled. They were glad to have their old friend and the precinct's best detective's niece on board with them. They had heard Maggie had graduated the police academy and K9 training with high marks both in and out of the field.
"You came just in time too!" The chief said. "We have a serial robbery that needs solving."
The chief and the two other officers began briefing her on the situation. Maggie studied the files closely while Socrates lay at her feet. Suddenly his sharp ears picked up a buzzing sound and he began to squirm facing the direction of the noise.
Maggie looked to see her dog beginning to whine and noticed a piece of paper flying in through the window and right onto the chief's desk. It then landed and everyone saw a small blue fly unrolling it and then trying to catch his breath.
"EW A BUG!" The Chief yelled. "GET IT OUT OF HERE!"
He grabbed a rolled up newspaper and he and the two other officers started chasing the worn fly around his office. Maggie meanwhile looked down at the paper that unrolled on the desk.
"CHIEF HOLD IT!"
The chief and the officers stopped in their tracks while the fly headed to the desk.
"It's a note!" Maggie yelled as she picked it up and read.
"Police: head to Humboldt Street, north of the city." She said. "Robbers there."
She turned to the little fly that was hiding behind the chief's pencil holder.
"How did you…?"
But before she could finish, the insect flew quickly out the window.
"Humboldt Street!" Muldoon yelled. "That's ten minutes from here! Let's get going, come on Kirby!"
"On it, you too Mags, you're riding with us!" Kirby said as they raced out the door.
Maggie shrugged her shoulders and then with Socrates in tow raced down to the parking garage to grab a squad car with Kirby and Muldoon.
