I probably should have put this in the prologue, but whatever. Chapter updates will be sporadic, and these first few from Barretta's POV are going to be short due to the absolute agony she's in. This is going to be kind of a case fic, not really in between any specific episode, but somewhere in late Season 8. So Dean's come back from Purgatory with Benny, and Sam has met Benny, and Cas has come back. Sam is still harbouring some ill feelings toward monsters right now and I'm assuming Dean came across monsters in Purgatory who didn't want anything to do with him and he can see that with Barretta. So if the boy's personalities seemed switched a little that's why. They've also just gotten a hold of the bunker, so they have a set place to live.

Disclaimer: I don't own SPN. I only own my OCs.

Barretta came to with ungodly amounts of pain lancing through her back and wing. Two make voices broke through the haze of pain and she could hear footsteps circling around her head. Large hands gently gripped her head and fingers pressed into her pulse point, eliciting an agonized whimper when her head shifted. Immediately the hands stilled and a voice emitted from above her, obviously calling out to his partner, the words lost to her through her pain. A hand started running through her hair and a soothing voice washed over her. She blearily opened her eyes through her agony and her vision swam in the early light of dawn, a face coming into focus above hers.

The emerald green eyes were the first features she noticed. Emerald, as she designated him in her thoughts, had a strong jaw bone, a beautiful facial structure and short dirty blond hair streaked with dirt and sweat. Barretta met his eyes again and found them to be kind. A sound came from behind her and she flinched, her teeth clenching and her lips curling up as she keened quietly. Emerald's eyes flicked up behind her, but he didn't react adversely to either her or the person behind her. Instead, he ran a calming hand through her hair again, talking lowly, the tone not unlike what one would use to calm a spooked animal. Though, she supposed in a moment of clarity, she was essentially that at the moment.

"Sam," Emerald addressed his partner and she flinched at the no nonsense tone. "Go see if you can find something we can use to get that boulder off of the wing."

Footsteps came around her head and "Sam" finally came into her line of sight. He was an absolute giant, standing at what looked to be at least 6'4. He had softer features and longer hair than Emerald, but the look in his eyes was definitely harder. Sam left in the same direction that the creature had come from (she absently wondered what had happened to it) and came back a short time later with a couple of crowbars. Emerald gently put her head down, eliciting another bolt of pain, and too the crowbar offered to him from Sam.

She whimpered quietly as Emerald left and he quietly apologized, seeing her pain. Sam's voice cut through the air a second later,

"She's not a dog, Dean."

Dean grumbled slightly but looked at her, trying to give her silent support. Barretta had just enough time to think, oh, so that's his name, before they moved the boulder and the pain increased tenfold. Spots danced in her vision and she blacked out again, not hearing Dean curse and call for her to stay awake.
