Friday evening, Five-0 Headquarters:
It was late Friday night when the team finally left headquarters. They had just finished the paperwork for a gruelling case and were absolutely exhausted. What had started as a double homicide and a missing child had turned into a state-wide hunt for an estranged uncle and the capture of a drug dealer responsible for the deaths of twelve young people, two of which were under the age of thirteen. The parents were murdered because they saw a deal go down and their child ran away from the scene. The only possible suspect was the brother of one of the victims, whom had a previous arrest for possession of drugs. However, it was later discovered that he was never in Hawaii and couldn't have possibly murdered his brother and his wife. In the end, everything turned out well and the child was found, safe and sound. And they put away another scumbag.
The case, however, had stirred up feelings for everyone, but particularly Danny, who could only think of his daughter. Any case involving children filled him with the desire to see his little monkey. To say Danny was excited about seeing Grace tomorrow was an understatement. He was, at this point, physically vibrating with joy at the prospect.
Danny was so caught up in his jubilation that he didn't hear Steve dismissing them and saying the paperwork could wait until Monday. He only moved when Chin physically clapped him on the shoulder as he left. Startling himself out of his thoughts, he waved farewell to the cousins as they left before turning towards his office to pack up for the night. As he turned out the light in his office, he glanced over at McGarrett's office, noting the light was still on inside and Steve was sitting at his desk.
Danny studied his friend, noting the furrowed brow he only got when something confused him. Danny was unsure as to whether he should interrupt him to say goodnight or leave him to his mystery assignment. Quickly making his decision, he walked over to his partner's office and knocked on the glass. Steve looked up instantly and motioned for Danny to come inside, closing his laptop as Danny entered.
"Hey man," Danny said. "You heading home soon too?"
Steve nodded. "Yeah. I just have a few things to finish off here and then I will be going home. Enjoy your weekend with Grace," he said, dismissing Danny.
Danny grinned at the mention of his daughter. "Oh, I plan to. So, see you on Monday?"
"Yeah, about that. I will be a little late on Monday. I have a meeting with the Governor at 0900 hours regarding the Wilkinson case."
Danny snorted. "Can't you tell the time like the rest of us who aren't army men?"
"It's the Navy, and it's an efficient way of telling time. It causes less confusion," Steve countered.
"Whatever, Rambo. have a good weekend," Danny said as he turned to leave.
"Yes, sir!" Steve said with a sarcastic salute.
Danny smiled to himself as he walked out of headquarters. He often liked to rile his partner up. It was so simple to do and Steve always took the bait. Danny got into the Camaro and started the engine before pulling out of the Palace parking lot.
Now that he thought about it, his partner looked tired. The dark circles under his eyes and his pale complexion were dead give aways. Danny hoped whatever his partner was doing in the office wouldn't take him too much longer. The man needed to switch off at some point and get some rest, otherwise he would run himself into the ground.
As he drove towards his home, his mind wandered to his lovely daughter, Grace, and their plans for a father-daughter boat trip that weekend. Perhaps he would invite Steve to come with them. Grace adored her Uncle Steve and Danny was sure that Grace wouldn't mind having Steve come with them.
Then his thoughts turned to his wayward brother, Matt. It had been over a week since he had heard from him. Danny just hoped that lack of communication meant that he was safe and sound and not in trouble somewhere. Danny knew that Grace missed her Uncle Matt. She was too young to understand the reason why he no longer came to visit her. Danny just hoped she would get the opportunity to see him again.
Sunday morning, McGarrett residence:
The sound of his phone ringing from the upstairs bedroom drew Steve's attention away from his project. Steve glanced back at the computer screen on the desk in his father's study before abandoning it to go upstairs to collect his phone. When he reached the phone, he smiled when he saw the caller ID.
"Hey, Danno. Do you miss me already?" Steve said by way of greeting.
"Good morning to you too, Steven. No, I don't miss you, but there is someone here who does. We were wondering if we could come over and use your beach, spend some time together away from the tourists, if you get my drift?" Danny asked.
"Sure. What happened to going out on the boat?"
"That sort of fell through. Literally. Turns out the boat we rented hadn't been used in years and the floor had worn down. As soon as any weight was put on it, it just collapsed. The owner was very apologetic, but now we are stuck without something to do. So Gracie thought we could come over to your place?"
"Of course. I would love to hang out with you guys. If you want, the guest room is made up so you guys can stay here as long as you want," Steve offered.
"Sounds great. So, see you in a bit?"
"Yeah, I'll be waiting," Steve said as he hung up.
Smiling to himself, Steve bounced back downstairs, feeling rejuvenated by the knowledge that his partner and his daughter were coming over soon. Danny was a great father and Steve could see the love in his eyes every time he thought about his little Gracie. Steve thought about his own father. Steve was sure John had loved him and his sister, but he definitely showed it in a very different way to Danny. Despite that, Steve still resents being sent away from his family at such a young age. He understands now that it was for his and his sister's protection, but he couldn't help but think there was another way.
Sighing, he gazed back into the study and the Champ toolbox underneath the desk. Realising he'd left the computer on, he want back into the study. He turned off the screen, leaving the program he was utilising running in the background. It would take a few hours before it produced any results anyway.
Steve jogged up the stairs to get ready for an afternoon at the beach. When he came back downstairs, he headed to the kitchen to prepare a fruit salad for Grace, minus the pineapple for Danny. Just as he was cutting up the mango, he heard a car pull up in his driveway.
Wiping his hands on a towel, he went to open the front door. As soon as he had opened the door, he heard a high-pitched squeal.
"Uncle Steve!" Grace Williams yelled as she ran full speed towards Steve.
Steve caught her and picked her up, tickling her behind the knees as he did. She giggled uncontrollably as she squirmed in her position under his arm.
"Steven, I beg of you, put my monkey down before she turns blue," Danny demanded, walking up behind his daughter, carrying everything a little girl could possible need at the beach.
Steve put Grace carefully down on the ground and she ran out the lanai doors towards the beach. Steve picked up the bowl of fruit and followed her outside. By the time he got there, she was already gathering the sand needed for making a sandcastle.
"Thanks for letting us come over, man. She was so excited," Danny said as he joined Steve outside on the lanai.
"No problem. Thanks for bringing her," Steve replied.
The two men sat in companionable silence, watching Grace build an increasingly taller and complicated sand castle.
"Uncle Steve?" Grace asked timidly ten minutes later.
"Yeah, Gracie?" Steve said, leaning forward in his chair to look her in the eyes.
"Can you help me build a moat for my sandcastle?" she asked.
Steve, after all, was well known for his awesome sandcastle crafting techniques and particularly his expertise on constructing moats. Danny was surprised the first time they had built a sandcastle together. He had honestly thought his tough-as-nails SEAL partner would balk at the idea of making a sandcastle. But it turned out that Steve's inner child was delighted. Ever since the first five-turreted castle was built, it had become a tradition whenever they were at the beach to build one more epic than the previous.
"Of course, Grace. How about I dig the moat and you get the water?" Steve said with a large grin on his face as he took Grace's hand and followed her over to where the castle was standing in all its sandy glory.
Grace nodded eagerly and ran off to het her bucket and start filling it with water at the edge of the beach. Danny sat on the lanai, watching as the two of them built the grand structure well past lunch time. Around two o'clock, Danny put a stop to the building extravaganza so they could eat lunch.
After they ate their fill of sandwiches and fruit, they watched a Disney movie of Grace's choice. The end of the movie found Danny and Grace curled up on the couch, fast asleep in each other's arms. Steve grinned and took out his phone, taking a photo of the moment. He would forward it to Danny later.
Steve stood up and went to the laundry cupboard and carefully extricated a blanket. Going back to the lounge room, he covered both Danny and Grace with the blanket before returning to his father's study to see if his program had yielded any useable results.
Unknown location:
"Based on the conversation, we believe they are at his partner's house."
"McGarrett, correct?"
"Yes. We believe they are staying the night."
"Looks like we have our window of opportunity. Let's move."
