Back Then: High School
Chapter Four- The Longest Summer
When Dom called Letty and said 'let's go get some food' she did not think it was a date. Though, sitting across from him now, in a diner she had never been to before; it was looking and feeling a lot like a date.
"Why didn't you tell me this was a date?" she said, making him look up from the peeling menu in his hand. He shrugged.
She wore leggings, and her mom's oversized college sweatshirt. She had not even bothered to comb the curls from last night out of her hair and they lay crispy and unkept all over her head. She looked like she had just woken up.
"I could have at least-" she gestured to her appearance making Dom smirk.
Dom laughed. "That's exactly why I didn't. We would have psyched out ourselves with anticipation, besides, you're perfect just like that."
Letty felt the crimson creep into her cheeks and wished she wasn't so obvious in front of him. She just couldn't help it. Things were going too smoothly for her to not question if it were all real or not.
Had last night actually happened?
She picked up her own menu and said, "What do you think happened to our dates last night?"
Dom looked at her thoughtfully for a moment before they both burst into laughter.
Who knew? They had spent the rest of the night making out in Dom's car. When Letty had called and told Mia, she had yelled back how obvious that was the case.
"I think that makes us terrible people." she said.
After placing their order for mozzarella sticks and mac n' cheese bites, Letty realized how insane the whole thing was. She was on a date with Dom. The unattainable, the myth and the dream.
"What's going on in that crazy head of yours?" he asked, piercing her thoughts. She thought for a moment, scrunching her nose thoughtfully before she dipped under the table and climbed into his side of the booth. With his hand already on the backrest, she fit in perfectly.
"I was thinking, you weren't close enough." He smiled down at her and captured her lips in a searing kiss. Letty couldn't get enough of kissing Dom, it was way better than she ever thought it would be. He was so demanding and she was so willing to give. Every time she touched his lips there was a current that flowed through her body making her electric to touch. His right hand cupped her cheek, firm but gentle keeping her face right where he wanted.
They stayed like that until the waitress came, holding back a blush at seeing the two kissing.
She loved being able to touch him whenever she wanted, kiss when she felt like it and talk to him about anything.
They ate and talked all evening. Letty didn't want to leave when he suggested they head home.
It was late evening, around five when they the diner and mounted into Dom's charger. Letty didn't want to go home so she put her hand on his before he could ignite the engine.
"Why last night? And not the night before or the week before?" she said.
Dom sighed before saying, "I didn't plan it, I just couldn't wait any more. I know my timing isn't great but I really, really like you Letty."
Letty warmed at the very sound of it. She looked at him with longing, knowing she didn't need words to respond to him. She was unsure how long they stayed staring at each other like that.
When Dom finally started back to the road he said, "This summer, I'm going to see you everyday, we have so much time to make up for." The moment the words left his mouth Letty felt like the record had scratched. Not only scratched but had been taken off the record player and smashed into a million pieces. Shit.
"What's wrong," he questioned her alarmed face.
"I won't be here," she said, broken and melancholic, "Mom and I going away for the summer." She had completely forgotten.
"Where to? Maybe I can come and see you," he tried, his face was hard to read but his voice revealed all his disappointment.
"The D.R," she said.
That would be a tricky place to drive to. He slammed his fist against the staring wheel making Letty flinch.
"Letty by the time you get back, I might already have left for college.
She cried then, she didn't care how immature she'd seem. Just her fucking luck.
"I'll try and get out of it." she said, though she knew it would be in vain. Tickets had already been bought, no way she was going to get out of it.
Letty left the following Wednesday. Dom was a mess of regret and emotions. He felt like he had wasted so much time worrying about her reputation when now, it didn't seem worth it. All he wanted to do was be with her, and now, that was taken from him. They had no more time.
The first week without her wasn't too bad. They talked on the phone, even emailed up to five times a day. Week two, he wasn't as frequent with his communication. He had taken up a job at Harry's auto shop to earn some extra cash for college; in the evenings, he would work in his father's hardware. When he got home, tired to the bone at night, all he wanted to do was hear her voice but he often fell asleep within the first ten minutes.
Week three and four, Dom rarely heard from Letty, twice a week at for the most. He understood why, she was meeting and getting closer with her family in the D.R. Sight seeing and going on adventures could measure up to talking to him on the phone. She probably forgot about him the more of the country she saw.
The next two weeks, was radio silence.
He didn't see much of anybody, Mia was at cheer camp for the next two weeks, some of his friends had packed up and fled for another state altogether. Dom sighed, there was one silver lining. The street races.
Friday night he found himself surrounded by the night life he had come accustomed to. Hector, Santos and Leo were all racing that night though he opted to sit out and just spectate.
Leo and Santos were moments away from getting into a fist fight when he heard his name. He turned around for the biggest shock, Johnny Tran had just rolled up. Even more surprising was Loren Tran in the front seat, Dom had not seen his ex-girlfriend since Junior year.
"What's scum like you doing in a place like this?" Dom joked.
Johnny Tran got out of the car and pounded the fist Dom had extended.
"Should have known you'd be here."
Dom smirked. "Where else would I be?" Dom was speaking to Johnny but his eyes were on Loren getting out of the car.
Johnny ran off to greet some old friends leaving Loren and Dom at the car. Loren had gotten more beautiful overtime, she was different now though. Edgier, with a tattoo sleeve of a spider in a web, nose and eyebrow piercings. It just enhanced her look Dom thought.
"I gotta say, you were the last person I thought I'd see tonight." he said.
"I'm only back for a week, the rents are visiting some family. We figured we would come see what the races had going on. Glad we bounced up. It's been too long."
He recognized that flirty look in her eye. "I agree Lo, too long." He didn't see the harm in a little flirting.
The time had way had made her settle, she wasn't a vapid teenager anymore. She was sultry, dark and intriguing. Reminded him of Letty.
She rolled her eyes at his obvious ogling.
"So, I heard you're going to New Mexico State in the fall?"
"You were checking up on me?" he said.
A flash of embarrassment was gone as quickly as it showed up before she said, "No- I.."
Dom smirked. "Don't sweat, I think it's cute."
Loren followed her arms. "I'm not cute anymore."
Dom closed the space between them feeling a rush from the interaction. It had been a while and though he didn't plan on doing anything that would upset Letty, the prospect was fun.
Dom nodded. "Where are you going in the fall?"
She shrugged, "I don't know if college is for me. Right now, I'm doing an apprenticeship at a tattoo parlor."
"Your parents are okay with that?" If Dom remembered correctly, they were insanely strict.
"Not in the least but with Johnny going off to Yale, they're completely focused on him."
Sirens in the distance cut their reunion short and told him his fun was up for the night.
Amidst the chaos, Loren pulled out a sharpie from her boot and wrote her number on his forearm.
"Call me, we'll see if we can get up to some of our old tricks." Dom flashed her a half grin before the went their separate ways, fleeing from the sirens.
With two weeks left of summer, Letty had to worship the ground Mimi walked on in order for her to agree to head back to the states, cutting their vacation short by two weeks. She barely dropped her luggage before she raced over to the Toretto house. Mia was back from her cheer camp by then surely, and she hoped Dom would be home too.
He was, in the street, under his car. He rolled out when he heard her car approaching.
His face was priceless when she saw him. She all but jumped into his arms and he even got engine grease all over her as he held her tight.
"Why didn't you tell me you were coming?" he said into her ear.
"Surprise?" she sang before attacking her lips.
When Dom set her down, he finally got a good look at her. She looked like that usual Letty, still gorgeous and still feisty just with some sunburn.
"Mia around?" Letty said closing the space between her and the door.
"Yeah, go on, I'll be here."
She ran into the house and up to Mia's bedroom to greet her best friend. It was too long since the two of them huddled on a blanket and talked about everything under the sun. Mia screamed at the top of her lungs when she saw the Letty.
She had intended to go back to see Dom but the two got to talking about their summers and all the amazing things they had seen and done and winded up talking till well into the night, when Mia fell asleep on Letty.
Letty quietly let herself out of the bedroom and back outside where Dom was still working in his car, or pretending to at least.
"Real subtle," she said.
He grinned. "You have a big head if you think I was waiting on you." he said, leaning against his car.
She grinned and leaned against him, snaking her arms around his neck. She kissed him slow and deep, like they had all the time in the world.
"Can you ride?" he said.
Whenever he said it, it sounded like a marriage proposal to Letty.
She smiled and jumped into the passenger's seat. Mimi would just assume she was going to sleepover at Mia's. Which she was, just in Dom's room, if she were lucky enough.
They drove for a while, taking the long way to no destination. Letty's feet were on his dashboard and her arm hung out the window. Dom was just as comfortable with his seat pushed back and his hand on Letty's thigh. Ever so often she would take his large hand in hers and kiss the back of his hand.
She told him about the D.R. Her new cousins, her grandfather and the car he gifted her with, the waterfalls and all the amazing things she had seen. He was so happy she got that experience, she was so passionate for life now and he saw it. He couldn't keep her back from any experiences it. Which led him to another troubling thought.
When they drove back to the Toretto house, it was understood that Letty was spending the night. Dom had no expectations of making love to Letty. He wanted—needed to be careful with her—she wasn't some jump off, she was special. More than that, she was still so young. The last thing he ever wanted her to feel was pressured.
She trailed behind him up the stairs and while he thought she would go into Mia's bedroom to sleep, she walked in behind him into his own room.
They lied facing each other, both exhausted.
"I'm glad you're back," He held her hand as they slipped off into sleep together. The last thought Dom had before he drifted, he would have to be the bad guy once again and set Letty free.
Dom woke up pretty early, he had work at Harry's for nine. Letty was still fast asleep. She was probably jet lagged so he grabbed his necessities and got ready for work in the living room. His dad had left for the hardware already and was probably none the wiser Letty was in his bed. That was a huge blessing as he didn't have the energy to explain that nothing happened, except sleep. That would be a hard sell.
On his way to work he thought about all the ways he had to make these last two weeks the best for Letty.
He wanted to cram in a year of relationship into two weeks. He thought about her this morning, warm and sleepy against his skin, nestled into him perfectly. He wondered then, if he would ever feel that with someone else, anyone else.
Letty woke up, happy and silly as she scented Dom all around her. His sheets, his pillow even her own skin now smelled of him. She rolled and nestled in his bed basking for a moment longer.
Once she was done savoring the moment in his bed, she wrapped on Mia's door before entering.
Mia was on her bed, painting her toe nails a dark blue.
"There she is, finally risen after a night of all that passionate sex."
Letty plopped down on the bed next to her. "Ha ha, very funny."
Mia shrugged, seeming to be very pleased with herself.
"I thought you would never wake up." Mia said.
Letty picked up a water from Mia's nightstand chugged the whole thing in one gulp.
"Jet lag,"
Mia scoffed, "Is that what we're calling it?"
Letty hit her a throw pillow. "I'm serious. Nothing happened."
Mia looked at her, eye brows darting all over face. "You're being serious?"
Letty nodded, with a yawn. "We just slept."
"You would tell me if something happened, wouldn't you?"
Letty shrugged, maybe—maybe not.
"I'm starving, have anything to eat?" she said, she left the room and heard Mia's footsteps following her down the stairs.
"I can't wrap my head around it, I thought for sure you two were..."
Dom wouldn't do anything like that, she knew for sure. Though a part of her wanted him to but she wasn't sure how she would react to him if he did. She just wanted to confirm that he wanted her.
"Why the hell not then?" Mia said, scooping out spaghetti into a bowl for Letty.
"I'm not sure if I'm ready."
Mia scoffed. "I don't believe that. It's Dom, you've been in love with him since you met him."
Letty rolled her eyes, that was a bit of an exaggeration.
"You should. Mark your territory before all those sexy college girls get their hands on him."
Letty rolled her eyes at Mia but she was lying if she said she wasn't nervous about that.
Mia reheated spaghetti for Letty while Letty hoisted herself up unto the kitchen counter.
A minute rolled by in silence then Mia retrieved the food from the microwave.
"Have you guys talked about the elephant in the room?"
Letty twirled the noodles unto her fork, half listening to Mia, "What?"
"Like what's going to happen when he goes off to college, you know, in less than two weeks.
"What do you mean? We're gonna be together,"
Mia looked at her like she was crazy. "Wait, have you guys had that talk in the first place? Are you in an official exclusive relationship? Letty, you're not actually that naïve? Don't be that girl who's gonna spend all of junior and senior year pining for her college boyfriend and cries when he can't come down for the weekend to see her."
"You've clearly given this more thought than me," She out down the bowl of spaghetti, suddenly losing her appetite.
"I just got him Mia, how am I supposed to let him go now?"
Mia shrugged and patted her arm. "I know it blows but how are we going to have fun if your waiting on Dom?" Mia left her with that last question and went upstairs.
Letty went home after lunch, she showered and watched a few hours of television until dusk fell. She was heading upstairs to get ready for bed when Dom's horn blew outside.
"Grab your suit, let's go night swimming,"
Letty did as was told and changed into her bathing suit. She rushed downstairs to meet him in the car.
"How was work?" she asked, once in the car. She felt like she had to, that's what girlfriends did right? Assuming that's what she was to him.
"Work was work. This is my last week at Harrys." he said. He told her about all the interesting customers he had, all the dirty tricks Harry was up to and she ate it all up. She didn't care what he was talking about, just that he was using her as a sounding board. Something she could definitely get used to.
The beach was scarce but not empty, most people were leaving when they arrived.
Letty charged straight into the water, letting Dom catch up to her in the water. She waded into the water and dunked her whole head under. He swam over to her, his arms around her waist, her legs hooking around his waist.
"I can get used to this," she said as they bobbed up and down in the water.
They stayed like that in silence for a while just enjoying each other. "I could stay here forever," she mused aloud.
Dom hummed, kissing her lips over and over again. She felt her body tremble against his own. His hands worked their way around her body and gripped her ass soliciting a yelp.
"Who'd you lose your virginity to?" she asked, randomly. Dom choked awkwardly.
"Umm-"
She swam around him and hooked on his back as she waited for an answer.
"I really want to know."
Dom didn't know if he should answer that, he didn't want to upset her. But she was persistent and supposedly mature enough to understand.
"It was Loren," Dom said. He remembered her visits during the summer and battled with mentioning it to Letty but in that perfect moment, he wouldn't do anything to destroy it.
"Wow okay, how was it?"
He shrugged, "Fine, I guess. It wasn't meaningful or anything but it was fun. I was a freshman, a kid basically."
Letty smirked. "Have you thought about it? With me?"
Dom turned around to look at her now, serious and intense. "Letty its—"
"Too soon?" she said and he nodded.
"For the record, I own my body and I will decide when if it's too soon." She poked him in the chest. She was absolutely right, reminding him how mature she was for her age.
"It is too soon though," she agreed. It made him laugh. He was glad they were on the same page.
They spent another hour swimming and laughing. When they left the water, all shriveled up, Dom knew he could not get any happier than this. But he was going to try in the remaining time they had left.
They hung out everyday, sometimes with Mia and Vince but mostly alone. Every day was a different adventure and Dom was glad he got to make these memories before he left.
In true Dom fashion, he began packing the night before he was supposed to leave. Mia was downstairs packing some dishes for him to use while Letty laid on his bed with a tape gun, taping boxes he was already done with. She didn't say much and he didn't try to force anything out of her.
When the majority of his belongings were boxed and taped they both laid on his bed, Letty laying on his forearm, their noses practically touching.
"You won't forget about me, will you?" she said.
"How could I forget you?"
Letty smiled softly.
"I don't want you wait on me." he said.
"I thought you would say that. Been preparing for it since I got back," she said, "This time I might actually agree with you."
"Enjoy your last two years of high school. It goes by in a flash before you know it, you'll be the one packing for university."
"So," she said.
"So," he said.
"Are we gonna date other people?" she said.
There was a long pause and she felt his pulse racing before he finally said, "If you want,"
Letty didn't reply right away, she didn't know if he was telling her she could date so he would have the liberty to do so as well.
"I'm not going to do though. Not for a while at least." he said.
Letty sat up slightly, so she was hovering over him. She caressed his face and he closed his eyes. He wanted to tell her that her touch made everything in his life okay, made it worth it.
"You are the best thing about me, Letty Ortiz."
She kissed him, slow and lingering, trying to make it last. He tried to pour his feelings into her mouth. He didn't know where life would take either of them, this could very well be the last time he got to taste her.
"I don't think I'll spend the night. I don't think I can say goodbye to you tomorrow." she said.
"Let's not say goodbye then," he said.
"Later alligator?" she said.
He held on to her tighter. "In a while, crocodile."
Junior year was too busy for Letty to miss Dom. Between AP classes, college applications seminars and entrance essays prep she didn't have time for anything extra. It had been two months since he left for college but it felt like less to her. She just didn't have the time to pine over her almost love. She was currently in the guidance counselor's office while he helped her edit a possible entrance essay. She was relieved to finally be over with the process.
"Why don't you go to fourth period and pass by after school for my notes." he said.
Letty thanked him and quickly left the office. She texted Mia to meet her in girl's locker room. She had an excuse from class letter viable for the whole day and she was not going to waste it in fourth period.
The now, head cheerleader, bounced in with her burgundy and yellow ribbons. Letty was sitting on the bench with her face in her palm.
"Kill me now," Letty grimaced.
"Essay prep didn't go well then?" Mia said. She laid a comforting hand on Letty's back.
"Why didn't you tell me it was so much stress…"
"I did but I can't afford to have a breakdown this week with spirit week coming up," Mia said.
Letty's faced soured. The two had not seen much of each other outside of school. Letty wouldn't say they were growing apart because they were still both there for each other but their distinct interest kept them apart more than they like.
"I miss you," Mia said.
"When we get to university we'll be together again." Letty said. They had both applied to the same colleges but had their sights on Northern Arizona University.
"NAU, here we come," Mia chanted.
Letty cringed internally, she had secretly applied to New Mexico State just to have the option to meet Dom. She and Mia had talked about going to Arizona for a while, if she bailed now, it would be a betrayal to her best friend. Besides, it was all hypothetical, she had not gotten in yet. That would be something to worry about when she got her acceptance letters the following year.
"Wouldn't it be awesome if we rent a small apartment together, take on university together like we do everything else?"
"You're an idealist Toretto, first I need to past Chemistry."
"Study at mine. I'm not leaving you behind."
"Thanks girl. I really need it." They were silent for a bit when Letty said, "What do you think Dom is doing right this second?"
Dom was on his way back to his dorm from an eight am class. Never again in his life would he take an eight am class. He wore a hoodie, joggers, and adidas flip flops on his feet. He walked with Han and Gisele away, growing sleepier by the second.
"I am going to need a very big cup of coffee if I'm going to survive the two more classes for the day." Gisele said.
Han laughed, "Ha, that was my only class for the day. Straight to bed for me." Gisele pushed him playfully.
Dom was amused by the sight, he was waiting for the two of them hook up. It was getting painful to watch.
"I'm with Gisele, I have two papers to write and a class later this evening." Dom said, general electives would be his undoing.
"Later losers," Han broke off to head to his apartment.
Gisele lived a half an hour drive from campus so she would stay on campus for all her classes then go home. She fell into step next to Dom.
"That lucky bastard."
"He is, isn't he," Dom said as he watched Gisele's eyes follow Han as far as they could see.
"When are you going to put the poor boy out of his misery and take the guy out."
Gisele blushed. Looking down, he didn't know how this fierce girl got so shy talking about boys.
"Han?"
"Yeah, him."
Gisele shook her head as they reached the cafeteria.
"We're too good of friends Dominic, it's not worth it." she said. They sat at a table in the middle of the big room. Gisele took out her laptop and Dom did the same.
"Let me tell you something, I kinda was in the same position and I promise you, it is worth it."
She watched him from behind her laptop screen, she was thinking but not yet convinced.
"You have a lot of advice for someone who isn't in a relationship." she said.
Dom had to give her that. "I'm single because I thought that it wasn't worth it."
Gisele thought on his words. They fell silent then delved into their school work.
University was an entire shift for Dom, he was no longer king, wasn't even in the royal court. He was just trying to keep his head above water with assignments between his general electives and his core courses. A peasant. It sucked, when he did have free time, he spent it stressing about assignments and quizzes.
The best years everyone kept talking about…he didn't see it. Maybe that had everything to do with missing Letty.
