So... why not write a Wings of Fire fanfiction? I'm loving the series so far; I've finished Darkness of Dragons and am waiting to get my hands on the Lost Continent ^^
This story is set after Darkness of Dragons but before Pantala is discovered - basically, Pantala does not exist. Just to give you an idea of the setting.
All right, read on! Enough of my useless babbling.
Starflight and Fatespeaker watched the egg closely, the three full moons shining bright above them. Clay, Glory, Tsunami, and Sunny had gathered behind them to watch as well, and Moonwatcher stood to the side, in the probable event that the little dragonet did have the same powers as her. She had hatched under two moons, but this egg was hatching under three. She had no clue what kind of powers it would have.
"Can you read anything yet?" Fatespeaker asked.
Moon shook her head. "I think I'll only hear it when it hatches," she answered.
All seven of them turned towards the egg sharply when they heard a loud crack. Starflight turned to Fatespeaker."What's happening?"
"It's hatching," she breathed, eyes trained on the now silver-colored egg. Small fissures continued to appear along the eggshell as it shook, and all the dragons in the cave held their breath in anticipation.
All of a sudden, the eggshell fell apart, and in the middle of the mess sat a tiny black dragonet with large green eyes, blinking up at her with her head tilted. "Awrk?"
"Oh!" Fatespeaker laughed happily. "I told you it would be a she!" Starflight nodded, smiling, and held out his talons. The little dragonet stared for a moment before clambering into them and curling up.
"What does she look like?" he asked quietly, eyes closed.
"Like you," she answered simply. "Except she has huge silver scales on either side of her eyes like Moon, and smaller ones around her eyes, and then more running along her back. They're like runic patterns, almost."
"That's what we'll call her," he decided, holding his dragonet close to him. He couldn't see her, but he felt her heartbeat all the same, and in this moment she was most precious to him, more than anything else in the entire world. "Rune."
"Awrk?"
"Oh," Moon giggled. "This is weird, but also cool. It's like telepathy, because we can essentially read each other's minds." She approached the family of three and crouched down, staring into the dragonet's eyes. "Hi, Rune."
Rune made a sound that resembled a giggle, and lay down on her back. Moon was hearing her, but it was just a mix of jumbled thoughts and broken sentences.
She was most worried about Rune. Moon herself had hatched under two full moons, but the dragonet had hatched under three. What would that do to her? Was there another power she would have? Moon remembered her days at school and the agony she had gone through, the countless headaches she had endured - it had felt like her brain was flooding. And she knew she would do everything she could to help Rune through it. Growing up, no one had taught Moon how to deal with hearing everyone else, but she could certainly teach the little one.
Don't worry, Rune. Nothing will ever happen to you. I promise.
