Chapter 17: Knowing One's Place

Celtic's ears twitched as he heard a couple of doctors chatting. He didn't feel like waking up, he was praying it all was a dream. He was still lying on his stomach. He opened one of his eyes as he heard the doctors walking out of the room. He let out a small sigh as he closed his eye, his guess that they thought that he was still asleep.

A rod slammed down onto Celtic's head. Celtic let out a cry and held his head sitting up. "What the hell!" Celtic cried out looking at who hit him. Dr. Brendon stood holding the small rod in his hand. "I can tell a sleeping patient from one faking it." He put his hand on Celtic's forehead checking his temperature.

The doctor walked over and grabbed some papers off the desk. He held them out to Celtic. "Take these to lab 078s" Brendon spoke as he looked at Celtic who seemed confused. "I thought I was supposed to be doing lab stuff.." Celtic spoke as he looked at the files.

Brendon looked at him. "You do what I say, simple. You drop them off and come back here. I'm sure you can do that better than the interns who want to waste my time as you have more at stake than they do." Celtic walked up to take the papers as he reached out for then the Doctor grabbed his arm and tied a small bell on it. "You can call that your hall pass from Doctor Brendon. If anyone should want to give you any trouble they'll recognize this as mine. Now hurry up before I call the Upper and your friend misses his next dose of medicine." he snapped.

Celtic nodded as he glanced at the small bell as it jingled. Walking down the hall his ears drooped as a few guards came up on him fearing what would happen but they did walked right passed him. He could hear them talking about him. He shook his head ignoring the comments about him being the Upper's pet dog now. It seems word travelled fast.

Celtic walked up to the lab and let out a small sigh. He opened the door looking around. His ears drooped as he saw the large white cat that was known as Brat. The beast was floating in a liquid. There were several devices hooked up to her. The computers were beeping and there were six scientists in the room. Most of them seemed to have their attention on the computers in front of them.

A scientist walked up and snatched the files from him. The scientist smirked at Celtic, studying the devil. "I guess we get a turn with the labrat." he chuckled as he pulled out a medical gun ready to start experimenting on him.

Celtic shook his head and held up his wrist as the small bell jingled. The scientist looked at the bell, he gave Celtic a glare. It seemed the doctor was getting his turn with the pet, though the doctor was just wasting a good lab rat by having him doing errand work. "Scram…" The scientist snapped at him.

Celtic took one last look at Brat and then walked out of the room. He flinched as the door shut. It seems that word does indeed travel fast around there as others were already wanting a shot at him. He walked down the hall studying the bell on his wrist trying to keep his mind off of Brat and Reki. He let out a yelp as he ran into Eikra. His ears drooped as she glared at him.

"Well, well if it isn't the lap dog." Eikra smirked as she looked him over. She grabbed his wrist with the bell on it. She pulled off the bell as she looked at it. "This is Doctor Brendon's though I'm surprised he would give it to you." She smirked at him as he tried to get the bell back. She grabbed his wrist. "You're nothing more than a harmless fly now."

Celtic glared at her as she held his wrist. His ears dropped as she pulled him closer. "Once I get my chance to run experiments on you, demon I'll enjoy hearing your screams of pain. You'll be sorry you insulted me." Eikra spoke into his ear. She started to walk off. She turned and tossed the bell to Celtic. "I wouldn't lose that." she chuckled at him.

Celtic caught the bell watching her walk off. He rolled his eyes at his perdictiment and walked back into the medical wing. He looked at Brendon who was sitting in his chair typing something on a small device. He glanced up at Celtic as he walked up to him.

"I tied that on so you wouldn't lose it, idiot." Brendon informed him as he took the bell. He looked up at Celtic who was looking away, studying Reki. Celtic didn't want to explain to him why the bell was off his wrist. He wasn't wanting to be a measly tattletail besides what would this doctor care. He probably just found it funny. The doctor pulled out his rod and smacked Celtic's hand with it. "Your focus is on me, not your friend."

Celtic rubbed his hand looking at the doctor. He looked at the small rod that Brendon was holding. It was clear that was his means of disciplining. Celtic nodded a little, realizing he was nothing more than a dog obeying orders to get a treat.

Brendon got to his feet. He walked over to a small case and held it out towards Celtic. "Take this to the Upper, of course, I shouldn't have to tell you to do whatever he requires of you. That is your position now; total obedience, following everyone's orders so to keep your friend alive and breathing. Room 013 is his office." He watched Celtic take the box. "I wouldn't stray too far off path from where you should be going. Though I'm sure you know that." he instructed as he walked over back to his chair. "Now get out of my sight."

Celtic nodded and headed out of the room. He looked at the case; he wondered what was in it. He glanced around opening up the case. It was vials that had small papers attached to each one. Celtic's ears drooped. He pulled out one of the vials looking at it.

"That's a prototype drug, which they are going to use on you, labrat." a voice spoke up next to him. Celtic ears drooped, he had been caught. His heart raced as he looked at the person who was next to him. Brendon stood looking at Celtic as he held his rod, tapping it on his hand.

Celtic put the vial up closing the case. He grimaced as Brendon tapped him on the side of the head with the rod. "I should really report you for your disobedience, but you did do your little errand run rather fast. And I know you're just learning. But realize there is no learning curve here. It's straight A's only. So you better get that into your mindset quickly for your friends sake." Brendon spun the rod in his hand thinking what he should do. "Go on. If I see you messing around again I promise your friend won't get the medicine he needs." he threatened.

Celtic nodded. He jogged down the hall. He thanked the fates that he didn't have to pay for his screw up. He stopped in front of 013's door and took a deep breath ready to face whatever he would have to face next. He opened up the door walking in. Celtic was shocked to see Reki's father sitting behind the desk in the office. Being in this office meant he was the big boss. He was in charge of everything on this station. No wonder word had spread so fast, everyone following their boss's orders.

It all was finally making sense, why he barely saw Oskal growing up on this station. He was incharge of it all. Why would he have time for his own kid. He felt sick to his stomach, he was sure that Reki's father was the one who had hurt him.

"Well, well it's good to see that you got the doctor's permission to leave." Oskal smirked at Celtic who was glaring disapprovingly at him. "Take a seat." He nodded to the chair in front of his desk. He studied closely as Celtic set the case on his desk and then sat down.

Oskal stood up walking up in front of his desk as he continued to study the devil trying to decide if he really had him under his thumb or if he was just putting on a show. "It seems that Reki gave me the best gift I could ever ask for. A loyal lap dog who will obey my every whim, though…" Oskal leaned against the desk as he reached over and grabbed a large dagger off it. It looked to be an ancient dagger from some dead civilization. He lightly ran his finger over it slicing his finger some, causing it to bleed, showing just how sharp it was.

"But I wonder just how loyal my dog really is." He looked at Celtic holding out the dagger to him. "Take it." he said knowing that he was risking a lot at that moment on the belief the devil cared for his son that much. He wasn't too afraid as he had guards right outside his office door and the best medical team waiting for this backfire. Celtic took the dagger as his ears drooped. He had a bad feeling about this. He looked at the dagger; it had another language engraved on the blade. The blade was a bit longer than most daggers. Celtic looked up at Oskal truly seeing himself driving it into the man's chest.

"That's a ritual dagger from the Quani-haru cult, something very rare and very valuable to get your hands on." Oskal informed the devil. "I want you to stab that through your arm." He looked at Celtic waiting for his response; wondering if this devil was fooling them or if his loyalty to Reki would indeed keep him loyal to him. But he needed to test Celtic's loyalties. And he personally wanted to be the one to witness just how far he could push Celtic before he wouldn't be loyal anymore and this was the first test.

Celtic looked at the dagger. He knew this was just a test, nothing more. He could handle that. He got a firm grip on the dagger and stabbed it into his forearm hitting only flesh, missing the bone so not to cause further pain and suffering. He looked up at Oskal not showing any sign of pain from it. He wasn't going to let this Upper get enjoyment out of the pain that he was pain that he was forced to administer to himself to please the Upper so his friend, this guy's son could get his medicine.

Oskal fiendishly smiled as he saw how quickly and efficiently he did it. It seemed that his new pet would cause pain to himself without question and not hold back. He was very pleased with this discovery. He had his total loyalty it seemed. Apparently, he cared for Reki more than he even realized. He harshly pulled the dagger out of Celtic's arm. Celtic let out not a sound as he did so. Oskal pushed a button on his desk letting the guards know they were no longer needed.

"Where should I send you?" Oskal asked as he circled around Celtic. He pondered what experiments he should have run on the devil. "You have a high pain tolerance, so let's see how high it really is and how much of it is just your stubbornness and pride." He stopped in front of the devil smirking. "Report to lab h89, I'm sure Eikra will be very happy to run her test on you." He smirked at Celtic.

Celtic looked at the ground as he held his arm that was bleeding. He looked up at Oskal glaring at him. He couldn't do anything to this bastard, just obey his commands. Once again a pawn being moved place to place; being sacrificed for the bigger plan. Celtic got to his feet heading to the door.

"Oh Orme." Oskal spoke as he sat down at his desk. "If you glare at me again, Reki won't be getting his medicine that he needs and I'll make sure you watch his dying breaths so you know it's your fault." he depicted."You will look at me with respect, fear or with the unspirited eyes of a lowly slave; either way will be acceptable."

Celtic walked out and shut the door behind him rolling his eyes in contempt. He looked at a woman who was standing there outside the office. She had long dark hair. She gave him the once over and then walked on into Oskal's office. Celtic slowly walked down the hall knowing he was going to have to endure any type of pain that Eikra could think of. And she was such a bitch so who knew what ghastly thing she planned on doing to him. Things were already reaching beyond his mental and emotional tolerance yet he had to hang in there for his friend and in hopes to figure out a plan to save Reki and Brat.

Pushing the door open he looked around the lab. It was a smaller lab compared to most of the others. Eikra was typing on a computer. Looking over her shoulder a grin covered her face. She got up to her feet. "I get the lab rat first." she cheerfully noted. She pointed to a chair. "Take a seat." She smirked as she scrutinized him walking up to the chair. His left arm had a deep wound and it was bleeding but it didn't seem to bother Celtic.

Celtic reaching the chair plopped down in it. He looked at the restraints that were connected to the chair. His gold eyes then looked up at Eikra as she walked up to him. His gold eyes trailed away knowing he could do nothing, they were holding all the cards. He noticed she was holding a device that looked like it would go over his arm.

Eikra set the device on his lap and grabbed his right arm. She strapped it down to the chairs arm. "I know if I told you to sit still you would, but you know how the body reacts to pain it might mess up the test if you fall out of the chair." Eikra grinned as she took the device and put it on his forearm. "This is going to test your pain tolerance. It's going to stab a variety of small and large needles into your arm. All of them will have different temperatures; it will start out just a simple prick till it turns into a pain that you won't be able to stand." Eikra chuckled as she grabbed his wounded arm and strapped it as well.

Celtic looked at the device on his arm. He shot a glare at her; he knew she was just waiting for him to scream out in pain. He wasn't going to give her that satisfaction. He was going to take all that he could till he would pass out. Out of all the things he failed at, taking pain was one thing he could do right.

Eikra walked over and grabbed a couple of small reading devices. She walked up and put them onto his temples. She walked over to her chair and sat down looking at him. She pushed a button on a computer. "Enjoy…" she taunted as she looked at the devil grinning.

Celtic closed his eyes as the first needle went into his arm. Every needle quickly sank into his arm but he kept quiet. Fifty needless had been rammed into his arm, but he never let out a peep. He looked at her; to his surprise she still had a grin on her face.

Eikra turned to the computer and typed on it. Her eyes moved to a monitor of his brain read out as another needle rammed into his arm. The pain sector of his brain went up some. She looked back at him; he was looking at the device. It was clear he was going to start feeling the pain. "Those first needles were setting a threshold, now it's going to start causing you real pain with the different temperatures applied."

Celtic spasmed as the needles started to come much faster and the pain ran through his body. It was clear that it was hitting nerves now. He closed his eyes as he was determined that he wasn't going to let himself scream out in pain. He wasn't going to give that bitch the pleasure of watching him suffer.

Oskal leaned back in his chair as he looked at his laptop. He was keeping an eye on where Celtic was going. He glanced up at the black haired woman. "So Bella what do you have to report?" he questioned her as she made her way up to his desk.

"The Truresa Project is ready for its first test." Bella announced proudly to him. "It seems that your son had everything that we needed to begin testing on a subject." Bella held out a device to the Upper.

Oskal looked at it and grinned. He started to scroll through the files on the device. "Once Eikra is done with the pain tolerance test I want you to test it on Orme. I want a full detailed write up of the progress you get with that test." he informed her as he looked back at the video feed on his laptop.

Bella nodded. "What are you going to be doing, since you're not going to be watching?" she asked the Upper. He glanced at her. "I'm going to watch some of the tests they are running on Brat. They are going to wake her up soon." He closed his laptop, "Orme should be done when you get there." He got up to his feet.

Looking to his desk at the small ring he picked it up. "Question" he spoke up looking to Bella "What type of person would ask a person who killed families; children, mothers and fathers to marry them?"

Bella looked at him confused, she then glanced to the ring he was holding. "Are you saying that she has a lover?" she asked in surprise. Oskal grinned, it seemed that there could be another player in all of this. Not only did they have Brat's crew who would be coming after her, but possibly a third party.

"The question is how far does love go? Does it truly have no bounds? Was the love before or after the incident? If I remember correctly from her memories… didn't seem like there was anything reported about a lover. So if it was after that.. This person… could well be a killer as well." Bella tutored as she headed to the door. She looked back at him. "Also need to call the doctor and tell him that your son is due for his shot since his life is so precious right now. Well at least, until the Truresa Project is up and working." She walked out of the room as he took out his cell phone.

Eikra pulled the device off of Celtic's arm. She glanced at his arm that was bleeding. Slowly, she took off the other devices she had on him. Pulling the strap off of his arm "I'm sure you're capable of cleaning up your arm yourself… Oh yeah, you won't be able to use it for awhile. There is a bit of nerve damage to it, though this also will test how fast your body heals."

Celtic got up as his arm hung lame to his side. He walked over to a medical kit picking it up. He glanced at her as she hooked the device up to a computer. He shook his head some. "Oh, Orme it seems they want you at the lab next door." Eikra informed him as she looked over the test results. Though the devil didn't show how much pain he was in, his brain readings showed clearly that he was in an extreme amount of pain. He held in his screams though she knew the pain wasn't as bad as the test said since he sealed up how he felt pain.

"What lab?" Celtic asked as he finished cleaning up the blood off of his arm. He started to wrap up his arm. He then looked at the arm he had stabbed. It didn't seem to be bothering him at all and had actually stopped bleeding on its own. He moved his arm to try to clean it up but it hurt far too much to move his other arm. Celtic decided he would just let his arm stay bloody for now. He avoided any eye contact with his tormentor. He wished to leave her presence as fast as he could. Anyhow he knew the faster he went through the rest of his torment the better chance he would have to see if Reki was ok and how Brat was doing.

Eikra glanced at him. "Lab on the right…" She smirked some as she got up and walked up to him as he headed to the door. She grabbed his arm and he let out a cry. She chuckled a bit. "Seems you couldn't keep hiding all of that pain after all. Next time, I'm going to have you unseal the seals that you placed on yourself so you could keep going and not pass out when you were on that police station causing all that ruckus. Now get out of here!"

Celtic left the room gently moving his other hand over his tattered arm. He looked at his arm. It hurt like hell but he could drown out the pain like he normally did with everything. He walked up to the lab door and opened it with his good arm.

The black haired woman that he had ran into earlier was there. There were a couple other scientists who were on computers. Bella looked at him and she walked up to him. She circled Celtic studying him, analyzing him, figuring out how she should perform this experiment.

Celtic watched the woman closely, his heart racing some. Something about this woman gave him chills and he knew that was a bad sign. He looked away from her as she stood in front of him. "Don't fight it." Celtic's ears twitched as she spoke to him. He winced as the woman shot something into his temple. He held his head from the shock. He let out a cry and fell to his knees holding his head.

The pain was much worse than the test on his arm, seemed to be much worse than anything he had experienced before. Something was pulling at his brain; at his very thoughts. It felt like it was picking and pulling his mind apart; not his brain but his mind. The feeling seemed to rush through his body and every part of his body seemed to be in immense shocking pain. He couldn't' even interrupt what this experiment was, just that the pain was overbearing, a pain that seemed to reach beyond the physical.

The scientist watched him fall to the ground screaming and writhing from the pain. Her eyes studied his reactions. She glanced at one of the other scientists who walked up to Celtic and set up a device in front of him. It would analyze his brain functions and how they were changing.

Bella walked over behind the other scientist looking at his screen. She studied the readings and glanced at Celtic who screamed out in pain. She looked back to the screen and pointed to the computer. "It looks like it's changing some of the synapse in his brain so hopefully it's going to work."

The few minutes of torture ended. Celtic was on his knees panting as sweat poured off of his face. He stared at the ground. He had never known such pain. And now everything seemed off. He couldn't quite pinpoint what was wrong. He looked up at Bella as she walked up in front of him. He wasn't sure what more of this was coming, he didn't even know what the hell she had done to him. He feared he'd break and rip into this tormentor as he seemed to be losing himself. His mind was in a fog, everything seemed so far away but he knew she was right there. He didn't like the feeling of it at all. It was as if he was just watching himself from far away, like he kept getting smaller and smaller, farther and farther away till soon he would be no more...

Bella knew that the only way to test to see if it worked was causing an emotional reaction to a command. "Go kill Reki, now." She spoke coldly as she watched Celtic closely. Celtic's eyes widen out of the shock of hearing such a command. His heart raced. "W-What? No! I will not!" he cried at her. He held his tattered arm as it tried to move some, without him doing it as if it had a mind of its own

"Kill Him!" she repeated. "NO! I am going through this crap to save him!" he yelled as he closed his eyes from the pain. He didn't understand it was as if he didn't have control over his arm; it kept wanting to do whatever it wanted. What was worse was the pain that was running through his arm on top of it. He needed his arm to remain still

"Test one failed.." Bella spoke and looked at a fellow scientist. I want the records and the readouts for the test on my desk as soon as possible." She walked up and grabbed Celtic's good arm. "Up now.." She didn't care how much pain he was in.

Celtic shuddered and he slowly got up. He looked at the woman. He trembled as she dragged him to the door. "Go to Reki's room get yourself cleaned up.. I want you back in here in two hours for the next test. I would get some rest if I were you." She ordered as she scrutinized him.

Celtic swiftly headed down the hall needing to get away from that place of torture. He stumbled. His motor skills seemed a bit off. His mind was clouded from whatever they did to him. The pain seemed to paralyse his body every step seemed to be so hard to make, every step a struggle. He used the wall to keep his balance as he walked unsteadily down the hall. He walked into Reki's room and leaned up against the wall. He slid down the wall and whimpered a little to his was to be his life now? He never knew such misery. He closed his eyes. He feared he didn't know how long he could go on like this. His friend's life was in the hands of the government as for himself he was nothing more than a lab rat. He felt as if he was being used by the gods again but in a much worse way this time.

Oskal walked into the lab. His eyes trailed to where the beast was in the glass tube. There was a metal collar around her neck as well as on her wrist. He walked up looking at the readouts of her vitals. He looked over to a nearby scientist. "Status of those 'pet' collars" he asked as he studied his pet in the jar.

The scientist looked at him as he held out some files. "We got the newest set that are said to work on higher class demons. It hits more of the nervous system to get more control over the creature." explained the scientist.

Oskal nodded as he pushed a button and the tube started to drain. He walked over and grabbed a ring off the table putting it on. It would allow him to have control over the beast in theory, if these devices worked.

The beast opened her eyes, it surveyed its surroundings and it's eyes moved to Oskal. She clawed at the glass trying to break through it. She growled as her fur started to stand up on her back as he approached the tube.

"I command you to sit.." his cold harsh voice demanded of the beast. He listened to the beast cries as it fought against the collar. He smirked as she eventually sat down. A huge grin covered his face. He was so happy that they were making quick progress. He walked up to the tube and pushed a button and the glass came down.

The beast started growling watching him. She was wanting to strike and rip him into pieces. "No attacking or biting.." The man spoke as he watched her reactions. He moved his hand up to her chin. She moved fast and bit hard onto his hand but let go as pain raged through her system. The beast let out a loud angry roar trying to fight the pain.

Oskal stepped back holding his hand as he looked at the damage. He looked at a nearby scientist. "I want another set of those pet collars on her." His eyes trailed to the beast that had her eyes peeled on him. He walked over to a computer and pushed a button. The tube around the beast closed leaving her trapped. "Lay down." he commanded as he looked at the beast and smirked. "You will stay lying down till I tell you otherwise." He grinned it seemed he almost had another pet that would obey his every whim. Soon there would be no question how loyal they both would be. Still he knew as of how they were now, there was a probability for… issues. He looked to his arm. It was only a small issue as of now.

He walked over to a table and sat down. He started to clean his wound. His attention went to Bella who walked in. "It seems your little pet doesn't like you too much." she commented as she walked up and sat down next to him. She took the bandages and started to wrap his wound.

Oskal smirked at her. "Oh, next time there will be loyalty, I don't care if she likes me or not. As long as she does everything I tell her." He winced some from the pain as she finished wrapping his hand. He glanced at Bella who was looking at the white beast. "How did the experiment go?"

Bella didn't look at him; she was more intrigued with the beast. "It seemed to mess up his motor skills but didn't affect his emotions at all. It seems I'll have to read over your son's notes and see what is missing. I might take a look at how those collars are made to see if I can use that at all."

Oskal nodded, "If you need my son tell me, I'll have him woken up without Orme knowing. " He got up to his feet. "I'll want all your readouts from that experiment on my desk." He glanced at Brat who was growling and keeping her eyes on her prey. It seemed Oskal would be her first kill if she ever did escape.

Smirking he walked out of the room. "Oskal, I have a request." Bella called out as she caught up with him. "I would like to try my experiment on that beast while she is in her human form. I'm thinking it would have more effect on her than Orme. Since he is a demon and she is more of a fragile species."

Oskal looked back at Bella running everything through his head. "Try it one more time on Orme and I'll look at those results and compare. If I think it is plausible then I will allow you to do so." He headed towards the medical wing to get some painkillers and check on the status on his son.
